2014 was a rough one – so bad the city had to make an emergency purchase of an additional 700 tons of salt to the tune of $142,600 to ensure its street services department wouldn’t run out by the end of February. Quote of note: “We haven’t had a lot of complaints, haven’t had a lot of accidents. I think people, because they see on the news that everybody is in the same boat, they’ve come to the conclusion that that’s what we’re dealing with.” Street Services Director Mike Wakefield

Business booming What happened: Wheaton had a busy year in business, including the opening of a pair of hip newcomers – Mile Long Records in October and Dry City Brew Works in November. Both were welcomed as departures from the many restaurants and home decor stores in the downtown area and by most accounts have been popular additions. Other downtown additions

in 2014 were: Prairie Path Books in March, Kilwin’s Chocolates & Fudge and Joan’s Place in April, Moore Toys & Gadgets in May, P.S. Flowers and Interiors in August and Art & Glass Studio in September. Quote of note: “I was shocked and so excited ... biggest ongoing projects of the Wheaton City Council over the last year-plus has been modernizing the city’s liquor code. Convenience stores can now sell alcohol from 7 a.m. to 10 p.m., so long as the store is at least 2,000 square feet and devotes 2 percent or less or its square footage to alcohol sales. That change led to a heated debate on an issuance to the 7-Eleven at 326 W. Liberty Drive. In August, the city amended its code, so restriction of the city’s 100-foot prohibition for businesses near a school or church would not apply if alcohol sales weren’t the principal profit source. leadership after former superintendent Brian Harris left for Barrington Community Unit School District 220 in May. By the end of July, the district announced Harris’s replacement would be Jeff Schuler, then superintendent of Kaneland Community Unit School District 302. Schuler has since set aggressive goals for the District 200 Board of Education in the face of an ever-tightening budget, after the Engage 200 public input process. Quote of note: “You clearly have your compass pointed in the right direction ... I’m looking forward to seeing where you take us.” District 200 board member Rosemary Swanson said to Schuler

the students.” Vice President Vroman said his skills as a lawyer have helped him guide the board to find middle ground and consider multiple perspectives, and that he has enthusiasm for the job and the district. He stressed continuation of what the district learned through its Engage 200 community engagement process as vital for the coming years. Crabtree, who is the Wheaton Warrenville PTA Council president, served on the facilitating team for Engage 200 and taught at Whittier Elementary for 11 years. She said a spot on the board is the next step in her district leadership, and hopes the dis-

trict will continue building the relationships it forged in Engage 200. “I have a relationship within the entire district, with the parent community, within the schools, with administration,” Crabtree said. Tonn is a retired engineer and businessman, and a special education aide at Wheaton Warrenville South. He became interested in education after retiring and thought he could bring his unique professional background as an asset to the board. “Some friends say I’m kind of crazy to run for the school board right now – it’s an ex-

tremely challenging time,” he said. “There are a lot of important issues out there, and I think finances are going to be probably more important than ever before.” The failure of the Jefferson referendum in 2013 seemed to be a surprise for the district, he said, and it needs to rebuild trust with the community. Zapf could not be reached for comment. Opting not to join the two incumbents in the race is longtime board member Rosemary Swanson, who said the decision not to run was both out of a desire for a more relaxed and flexible schedule and to keep the board fresh. “I am very pleased with our new superintendent, Dr. Schuler; our senior leadership staff is excellent and stable; our teachers are caring professionals of the highest quality; and we have a high-functioning board,” she said. “This seemed like the right time to step back in order for new leadership to come forward.”

WHEATON – Cantigny Park has announced the winners of its annual Cantigny in Focus photo contest, according to a park news release. Scott Seifrid of St. Charles won first place for his photo of a ruby-throated hummingbird feeding in Cantigny’s gardens. Second went to Wheaton resident Sharon Koehler for a picture of a pair of participants at a breast cancer walk at the park. Beth Wyse of Warrenville took third with a shot of a colorful autumn display outside the Cantigny Visitors Center. The photos were chosen from 40 finalists selected a year ago and displayed throughout the park. Each finalist got an annual membership, and the three winners received a Cantigny gift card. On Feb. 5, 2015, the top 40 images from 2014’s Cantigny in Focus contest will go on display.

WHEATON – Five candidates filed to run for the Community Unit School District 200 Board of Education during the past week. Incumbents Jim Vroman and Jim Gambaiani will face off against Gary Tonn, Chris Crabtree and Judith Zapf in April, 2015 for two open seats. Both Vroman and Gambaiani said they decided to run again to continue the progress they made in the past four years. Gambaiani said issues in the district’s future include the Affordable Care Act, possible pension and school funding reform bills, unfunded state mandates and the district’s debt service. “There are many daunting financial challenges that lie ahead for District 200,” he said. “I believe in my record of fiscal responsibility balanced against providing the best education possible for

NEWS BRIEF

Christ on Christmas

by Joe Costello

Being a retailer is an amazing thing this time of year. One of the things that amazes me the most is how few people say “Merry Christmas” when they leave or enter our store. It’s always “Happy Holidays”, which is not a bad thing in and of itself, but here is our take. “Christmas” What is it? The celebration of the birth of “The Christ”. Jesus was born so that man may live. Who celebrates it? About 90% of Americans in some form. When do they celebrate it - all agree December 25th. How do we celebrate it? Many ways, not the least of which is exchanging gifts to the tune of about 200 billion dollars. So what’s my point? Should we call Columbus day, “founders day”, should we call Martin Luther King day, “civil rights day”, that would be a disgrace to both of these great men. Yet, the greatest man of all, God in the flesh, has had His name largely pulled from mainstream America on the day we honor him. This in and of itself is travesty enough. But what is really worse is the rest of the holiday has not changed. Millions are willing to ‘cash in on it’, but millions (most meaning no harm) have pulled His name from the occasion and replaced it with “winter” and “happy”. Not at Costello’s. MERRY CHRISTMAS! And to our Jewish friends, Happy Hanukkah. Lastly, to every soldier who is serving right now to give me the freedom to worship God, run my business in a free enterprise zone, and raise my family in freedom… THANK YOU, MERRY CHRISTMAS AND GOD KEEP YOU!

WHEATON – Say what you will about the power of presents, but for most, the holidays are all about spending time with loved ones. That’s something the DuPage Convalescent Center takes seriously, as evidenced by the annual resident and family holiday party it hosted Sunday. The event has been a fixture for decades, said assistant administrator Shauna Berman, and is the talk of the residents for weeks before and after. “It’s kind of an expanded family celebration,” she said. “The residents, their roommates, their families, the staff and their families too ... these are the events [where] we all come together.” This year, the center hosted eight parties across the building, each with live music and “probably more [food] than anyone should have around,” Berman said. Each floor had a dedicated Santa Claus who visited every resident including those unable to leave their rooms. The center also holds a yearly adopt-a-resident pro-

gram alongside the event. Each resident comes up with a list of items they want for Christmas, and the center often starts fielding calls from gift-givers in September and has to make a wait-list, Berman said. Both the communal party and gifts are generally much-needed by residents, as about 80 percent of the 360 are on some form of public aid, Berman said. Many don’t have families, or have families

too far away to visit. Having a party before Christmas Day ensures as many residents as possible will be present to celebrate. “When we go into the holiday season, a lot of us still miss our real homes,” said fouryear resident John McCall. “We have the opportunity not only to have our families here, but we get to meet the other families. ... Everyone walks away with a smile.” McCall said he and his family spent a previous holiday party with his last roommate, whose family lived in another state. His daughter even brought his roommate a gift. “He wasn’t expecting anything,” McCall said. “It was really rewarding for him and for us to see his expression. A lot of our people here do that, they adopt their roommates.” Resident Edward “Skip” Meyer said he always tries to reach out to his fellow residents during the holiday party, and credited the festive spirit to the staff and volunteers. “All of the staff here is exceptional,” he said. “The way that everybody comes together here during the entire Christmas season to help out [is special].”

its various special events in 2014. The big earners this year were established favorites Taste of Wheaton with $33,950.18 and the Wheaton Brew Fest, which brought in $19,090.42. New events Fun Run in Color and Light the Torch Night Run finished in the black, each earning more than $10,000. The Lions Club Reindeer Run, Wine & Cultural Arts Festival, Go Fly A Kite event and the Smooth Jazz Fest all came in even or profitable. Three events – Fourth of July activities, Music Mondays and Shakespeare in the Park – actually lost the district money. The worst offender was the weekly music showcase, which came in with a

$2,493 net loss. “Events like the Taste of Wheaton, the Brew Fest and the Fun Run in Color – those types of events are set out to make a profit,” Wilhelmi said. “That said, [with] some events like Music Mondays and Shakespeare in the Park we’re hoping that it’s going to be sustainable and cover expenses ... but those are events we like

to offer to the community as a part of our Park District mission.” Wilhelmi said she didn’t anticipate the district cutting any of its existing events next year, but said committees would begin to meet in the first quarter of 2015 to begin planning. “There were a lot of wins in 2014,” she said.

WHEATON – The Wheaton Park District is reporting a positive financial outlook for both the upcoming year and in 2014’s special events. During the Dec. 10 Board of Commissioners meeting, the board voted to pass its balanced $30 million budget for next year, as well as an additional $9 million capital budget. “The financial department of the Wheaton Park District continues to be very strong,” said Rita Trainor, finance director for the district. Trainor said the small increase in this year’s $16.9 million levy was because of scheduled debt service. She

chalked up the balance and stability to the district’s longterm planning and budgeting approach. “We take a longer focus and our fund balance targets other than in our zoo fund we are meeting or exceeding all of those targets,” she said. “Which indicates that we are in fact managing things prudently and are in a good financial position.” The board also received the first formal report on the performance of its special events throughout 2014. Margie Wilhelmi, the district’s director of marketing, said the events were helped out by a warm summer and several popular new events. In total, the district made an estimated $80,546 from

Chamber looking to ‘go deeper in 2015’ As my year serving as president of the Wheaton Chamber of Commerce comes to an end and I transition to the pasture of past presidents, I do so with fond memories of 2014. The chamber started 2014 with a fresh strategic plan developed at a board retreat at IIT late in 2013. The plan included an objective to develop stronger, more strategic relationships COMMUNITY with our community partners. VOICE The ball started rolling Rick with a round of early morning Erickson “egg’lectic” breakfast meetings where we refined the objective, built a relationship matrix and established a board member lead for each relationship. Then we started to make the calls. Initially, there was healthy nervousness, a little “fear of the unknown.” Do you remember the high school kid (or were you that kid?) who was afraid to ask his dream girl out for a date, only to find out years later that she would have said yes? Well, we’re discovering that our strategic partners are saying yes. We just need to make the call. The receptiveness of Wheaton leaders to forge strategic relationships – whether from city government, the school system, community organizations or businesses – is strong and is an asset not every city can claim. Example: I had the pleasure of leading what turned out to be a wonderful experience called “Reflections Framed – A Celebration of Military Service, Past and Present” – a Veterans Day fundraiser for the Midwest Shelter for Homeless Veterans. My first step was to call community leaders to seek their support. I was a little nervous – I was “that kid.” Fortunately, and not surprisingly, everyone said yes. As the project moved along, various folks, including our friends in the press, asked, “Is the chamber leading this? Is the Park District leading this? Who’s leading this?” I enjoyed replying, “We all are!” Leaders such as Mayor Mike Gresk, Paula Barrington (DWA), Kerry O’Brien (WCC), Betsy Adamowski (WPL), Pam Kostecki (MSHV), Paul Herbert (First Division Museum at Cantigny) and many others rallied effortlessly around this community cause and win. So are we done? No. There are relationships to discover, relationships to strengthen, phone calls to make. But the chamber’s intention is to “go deeper in 2015” under the leadership of 2015 board president Dale Showalter, executive director Kerry O’Brien and a motivated Board of Directors. So when the phone rings, please say yes. Happy holidays, everyone.

SOUND OFF

Sound Off reflects opinions, not facts I’d like to remind readers of the Sound Off column that, as the guidelines clearly state the comments “should not be taken as fact.” Several recent comments about the Glen Ellyn Park District, which all appear to be from the same person, are misleading at best and, in some cases, simply not true. For the record, a routine exit poll survey is being conducted, based on support from a majority of the board, and will cost about 10 cents per resident; it is not a “pool survey.” The proposed turf at Newton Park represents the best price negotiated by a purchasing cooperative commonly used by public agencies, and is far from “the most expensive turf option.” It has yet to be decided which features will be included. I would encourage all readers to contact the Park District, or visit their website, for accurate information.

Freedom of speech must be upheld I’m going to start my own protest right here, and it’s against people in the western suburbs making ignorant comments about the rights of other people. Can you imagine what kind of riots there would if people could not pass judgment on people from other ethnic and social economic backgrounds? It would make Ferguson look like Disneyland.

I certainly agree with last week’s article “Officer was doing his job.” The media needs to stop building this up and antagonizing people. They are somewhat responsible for all the Lombard leaf sweep protests. The officer was doing is a good idea Batavia has a leaf pick up his job. program that I wish Lombard would copy. MiMi combines proprietary Freddie Mac data with current local market data to assess where each single-family housing market is relative to its own long-term stable range by looking at home purchase applications, payment-to-income ratios (changes in home purchasing power based on house prices, mortgage rates and household income), proportion of on-time mortgage payments in each market, and the local employment picture. The four indicators are combined to create a composite MiMi value for each market. Monthly, MiMi uses this data to show, at a glance, where each market stands relative to its own stable range of housing activity. MiMi also indicates how each market is trending, whether it is moving closer to, or further away from, its stable range. A market can fall outside its stable range by being too weak to generate enough demand for a well-balanced housing market or by overheating to an unsustainable level of activity. For more detail on MiMi see the FAQs. MiMi is released at 10 a.m. EDT monthly. The most current version can be found at FreddieMac.com/mimi.

Tourney run starts Tigers’ turnaround By MATT LE CREN msleditorial@shawmedia.com NAPERVILLE – With only one returning starter, Wheaton Warrenville South’s girls basketball team figured to struggle early this season. The Tigers did just that, starting 0-7. All but two of those losses were close, including two in overtime, giving the team hope for a turnaround. That turnaround has arrived. South won four of five games before Saturday’s 42-31 loss against Providence in its final game at the Benet-Naperville North Tournament. “I’m very pleased,” South head coach Rob Kroehnke said. “We took steps, especially defensively. We’re starting to understand positioning. We’re starting to understand the effort that it takes to play great defense.” The Tigers (4-9), who advanced to the championship bracket at Benet and finished the tourney with a 3-2 record, including a 52-38 upset of Naperville North (8-5) on Friday, played great defense against favored Providence (9-4) and held a 23-20 halftime lead. But they mustered only four baskets in the second half and lost despite giving up just five points in the fourth quarter. “Unfortunately the second half we got caught where we couldn’t score,” Kroehnke said. “It was little things here and there, and unfortunately you can’t help the other team out when you shoot bad and turn it over. We’ve got to clean that up, but we’ve definitely made big improvements since the beginning of the year and we’ll continue to make them.” Senior forward Olivia Linebarger, who recently committed to NYU, led the Tigers with 15 points, 10 rebounds and five assists. Erin Madigan added 10 points, but the rest of the team combined for just six points. “I think [the tournament showing] is obviously a positive because this is where we

This tournament shows us that we can compete, so I think when it’s all said and done we can really pull it together.” Linebarger, the only Tiger with previous starting experi-

The squad opens up with Peoria Richwoods and the winner advances to play either North Lawndale or Bloomington.

The western suburbs have sent its fair share of football players to big-time programs, and another group of college coaches are tapping the area to bolster their programs. Wheaton Warrenville South begins holiday tournament action

ATHLETE OF THE WEEK JENNA BRAMBORA

By SCOTT SCHMID sschmid@shawmedia.com

Glenbard South Senior | Girls basketball Why Brambora was selected: Brambora led all scorers with 16 points in the Raiders 57-45 win against conference rival Riverside-Brookfield. Glenbard South guard Jenna Brambora is a major part of an experienced Raiders core as the senior is in her fourth season on the varsity. On Dec. 18, she played a key role in the team staying undefeated in the Metro Suburban Conference, scoring 11 of her 16 points in the fourth quarter in a 57-45 victory against Riverside-Brookfield. Brambora, the Wheaton Bank & Trust Athlete of the Week, spoke with Wheaton Suburban Life sports reporter Scott Schmid about the win and Glenbard South’s fast start to the season.

Schmid: Knowing that winning conference is always a goal, how big was that win over R-B? Brambora: It was definitely a really big win. R-B always gives us good competition and we’ve had a rivalry for the past couple years. That was a big game for us.

Schmid: What have been the keys to the team’s fast start (9-1 over the first 10 games)? This Athlete of the Week is brought to you by

Brambora: I think we are doing a really good job of playing as a team. We are sharing the basketball and giving everyone opportunities to score and really cracking down on defense. We are a team with a lot of speed and hustle and heart. Schmid: How much of an advantage is it to have so much experience on your team? Brambora: It’s really important. It gives us an edge. We all know what we are doing and we don’t crack as easily under pressure. And if we get down, we are resilient and able to come back. We know how important the little things are.

Schmid: In what ways have you changed from being a freshman on the varsity to now? Brambora: I think I’ve become more confident and more of a leader on the court. I really looked up to all of the older girls on the team and now it’s my responsibility to be a leader for the younger kids.

WHEATON – In his previous nine-year stint as the Wheaton Warrenville South boys basketball head coach, Mike Healy became quite familiar with the Jack Tosh Holiday Tournament. Haley, who also is the WWS athletic director, returned to the boys basketball sidelines this winter. His Tigers will begin play Friday at the newlook tourney run by York High School, a field that has since expanded to 32 teams. “You know what, you hear that it’s a coaches tournament, that there are a lot of great coaches in it,” Healy said. “And I believe that. I have a lot of respect for the guys in there. It is five games and it’s a grind. I love it, you play good competition no matter what.” WWS will start off play with a matchup against Providence at noon Friday. The winner advances to take on either McHenry or St. Patrick in the second round. The Tigers enter with a four-game losing streak after dropping a 54-39 decision to Naperville North on Dec. 19. The opening four minutes proved to be the difference as the home team trailed 14-0 at the outset. At one point, WWS sliced the deficit to five but could not get any closer. Austin Polezoes had nine points and Josh Ruggles and Jeran Simpson each had seven. “We aren’t good enough to come out and get down 140,” Healy said. “I thought we scrapped, it didn’t snowball to the point where it was over. We still felt we were in the game in the third quarter and

We are a little better than we’ve played the last couple weeks. It is easy for me to say that, we have to figure out how to get them to show that on the floor.”

Wheaton North The Falcons also are at the Jack Tosh Holiday Tournament and open up with Waubonsie Valley at 9 a.m. Friday. The winner advances to see either Conant or DePaul Prep in the second round. Wheaton North fell in DVC play for the first time this winter Dec. 19, dropping a 47-43 decision to Naperville Central. Nick Jordan had 15 points.

West Chicago The Wildcats kicked off the DeKalb holiday tournament Monday with a 49-43 win against Belvidere. Mike Bibbs led all scorers with 23 points and Tai Bibbs contributed 10. The four-day event wraps up Friday and Saturday.

St. Francis The Spartans are once again at the Glenbard West Holiday Classic and notched a 42-32 win against Northridge Prep on Monday. Jason Sullivan scored 17 points and Gabe Johnson tallied 14. The squad took on Willowbrook on Tuesday and will then play the host Hilltoppers on Friday. St. Francis was coming off a 48-25 win over Montini on Dec. 19. Nick Cooney had 11 points and Sullivan finished with 10.

Wheaton Academy The Warriors will participate in the East Aurora holiday tournament Friday through Tuesday. Wheaton Academy first plays Chicago Noble DRWT College Prep and then faces Lincoln-Way Central and East Aurora in pool play. Wheaton Academy knocked off IC Catholic 70-56 on Dec. 19 as Christian Smith scored 29 points. R.W. Rienow and Bryce Sandburg also checked into double figures with 10 points apiece.
