Wheaton council ponders $10.4M floodwater project for south side By NATHAN LURZ WHEATON – Although it came months later than expected, the Wheaton City Council recently received a major flooding survey that could be a key piece of the eventual stormwater puzzle in the city. During Monday’s city council meeting, consultant Christopher B. Burke Engineering and city staff presented the Briarcliffe Lakes System Flood Study. Looking at historic flooding information, building drawings, field investigations and other information, the two organizations mapped out the flood zone risks of the area from Butterfield road up to the Williston Basin in the 500 block of Kipling Court. Erik Gil, project manager at Burke, said the goal of the survey was to show which areas in that section of the city were more susceptible to extreme flooding – such as the April 2013 event – and provide alternatives for the council to consider. The area includes a pair of lakes near the border of Wheaton and Glen Ellyn near the College of DuPage, which are the primary cause of the flooding in the area, according to the study.
Service Directory: 630-427-6238 Recruitment & General Classified: 877-264-2527
In all, 43 homes typically flood during a 100-year storm, or a rainfall that only has a 1 percent chance of happening each year. All largely effected homes centered around Briarcliffe Boulevard and Brentwood Lane and surrounding side streets. Gil proposed several alternatives, including converting the nearby Briar Patch Park into a water retention basin, restoring a berm near the College of DuPage and buyouts. However, he believed the best combination of effectiveness and price was construction of a new 3 ½-by-10 foot culvert from Brentwood and Cheshire Lanes south to the Windsor Channel into the Forest Preserve District of DuPage County’s Rice Lake. “[It] is a viable option to decrease flooding in the area,” city stormwater engineer Joe Tebrugge said. “It’s actually one of the few areas in town where we actually have an option to take water somewhere else.”

The project would decrease the water levels in some areas by as much as 5.5 feet and eliminate overland flooding in 42 homes in case of the 100-year critical event, the study said. In order to do so, the city would have to conduct a formal study to determine any negative effects downstream, receive proper permitting through the county and get permission from the forest preserve. Gil said he estimated the channel would easily absorb the 0.3-foot increase in the flood water elevation. But all that would come with an estimated $10.4 million price tag. “The hurdle is always funding them,” Tebrugge said. He explained the city had two avenues for outside funding – the Department of Housing and Urban Development’s National Disaster Resilience Competition and the Federal Emergency Management Agency’s Hazard Mitigation Grant Program. The former is a competitive grant that can award up to $1 billion for resiliency strategies that still have needs after the April 2013 floods. The program is administered through DuPage County and 50 percent of all funding must be used in low- to moderate-income areas, which covers the area in question. The latter is an annual program administered by FEMA that uses an analysis software to determine whether it is a cost-effective program. Tebrugge said after the meeting that, while the city’s plan came more than two years after the April 2013 floods, he believed the city would still have the potential to receive funding through the two programs. Although the city likely wouldn’t make many moves before it had the chance to survey its remaining 17 flood-prone areas during the next two years, he said he believed taking the time to do a full study was worthwhile in the long run. “Completing a flood control program takes a long time,” he said. “A lot of cities had already been doing them for years when the floods happened ... Being fair is important. You can set precedents that you can’t afford. So even if you miss out on the possibility of funding, it is better that you go through the development.”

WHEATON – Throughout Wheaton, there are constant reminders of the city’s long and storied history – the old courthouse, homes and storefronts; parks named after local heroes; and a historic college. The city’s annual Preservation Week, which began this week, aims to bring that history to the minds of residents and is part of the American Library Association’s national event of the same name. “I think it is important to remind people about the history of Wheaton,” said Nancy Flannery, chairwoman of the city’s historic commission, which coordinates the event. “It’s a very interesting community with a rich history.” Central to the celebration are the “Pride in Preservation” signs displayed around the city. The purple reminders stand in the front lawns of various sites designated as Wheaton Historic Landmarks and locations listed on the Wheaton Register of Historic Places. Flannery said the signs call attention to the history surrounding residents and hopes they will inspire more homeowners to investigate their own houses’ backstories – particularly May 23 at a home history research event at the Wheaton Public Library. The city has already hosted the May meeting of the Chicago Suburban Preservation Alliance and a May 13 lecture

City to celebrate its history with Preservation Week
Big things in store for Town Square Wheaton By NATHAN LURZ nlurz@shawmedia.com WHEATON – One of the city’s biggest retail spots now has a new owner and will soon be getting a face-lift. Tucker Development and Hutensky Capital Partners have purchased Town Square Wheaton, a 200,000-square-foot shopping, dining and office space on the south side of Wheaton, for $57.25 million. Rich Tucker, CEO of Tucker Development, said the opportunity to get into an established and built-in market was one they couldn’t pass up. “We have been aware of the property for a number of years, ever since it was built, and we always liked the real estate and the location,” he said. “And we knew there wouldn’t be a quality development like this that came around often.” The two companies have targeted about $1 million in physical improvements, including signage, façade work and other items, Tucker said. He said the property currently has about 85 percent occupancy, with 160,000 square feet of retail space and shops including Banana Republic,
Yankee Candle, Gap and Victoria’s Secret. Tucker said he hoped to fill the remaining spaces with dining options. It also includes two professional buildings housing several medical care facilities. Tucker also said he envisioned expanding the location’s annual programming, which now includes a variety of events such as the Christmastime Frosty Fest and a Halloween costume party. “There are great demographics around there,” he said. “There’s a customer base that’s already there that we think can be improved upon by creating more opportunities.” Kerry O’Brien, executive director of the Wheaton Chamber of Commerce, said she was excited to see the new management. She said continuing to have a strong shopping center off of Naperville Road and Blanchard Circle was a good complement to the city’s downtown. “Some people sometimes see that as competing shopping centers, but they both enhance each other making Wheaton a retail destination,” she Bill Ackerman - backerman@shawmedia.com said. Town Square Wheaton shopping complex is under new ownership.

6 City, schools, nonprofit warn of potential funding cut consequences By NATHAN LURZ nlurz@shawmedia.com WHEATON – Big money problems in Springfield may mean tough financial times for local municipal governments and agencies, including those in Wheaton. With a $6.2 billion shortfall, the Illinois General Assembly is facing the need for extreme cutbacks, drastic tax increases or a combination of the two. Just last week, the Illinois Supreme Court struck down a possible pension fix passed in 2013, putting the state back on the hook for $100 billion in backlogged bills. To address the shortfall, Gov. Bruce Rauner announced a budget in February with $4.18 billion in spending cuts, including cutting the amount of state income tax returned to municipal governments in half and millions in reduced spending for many grant and human service programs. Though legislators are still negotiating before the May 31 budget deadline, Wheaton City Manager Don Rose said the income tax cut would take away about $2.6 million from the city annually – about 7 percent of its general fund revenues.
“I think many municipalities may have a bit of a chip on their shoulder, because for the most part we have done an excellent job of managing finances,” he said. “To see this revenue source looked at as a revenue source for the state ... all that would do is make things difficult at a local level.” Rose said more than 60 percent of the city’s expenses are in its workforce, which was already slashed during the recession and includes the police and fire departments. The only other major expenditure source that could be shed to make up for such a big loss in revenue would be its capital fund, Rose said, a near-sighted fix because as infrastructure deteriorates it becomes more expensive to repair. Trying to make up for the reductions by using property taxes alone could mean upwards of a 12 percent hike, Rose said, something he believed the council and property owners were reluctant to pursue. “This all forces stuff down to the local level and makes us figure out whether we want to raise taxes or diminish services even further than they have been the last several years,” he said.
The city and Community Unit School District 200 also share the potential financial burden of pensions. Proposed solutions to the crisis have involved passing down some of the costs to individual municipalities and districts. That could be a sudden, drastic expenditure for a pair of tight budgets striving to stay balanced, Rose said. One of the few things Rauner’s budget increased was general state aid education spending, and District 200 Superintendent Jeff Schuler said the biggest threat to the district was an old foe. In 2014, districts across the state rallied against Senate Bill 16, which was designed to rewrite the formula for state education funding and disproportionately hit wealthy suburban communities. After public outcry, the bill died at the end of the session. New sister bill Senate Bill 1 has a similar impact, with District 200 set to lose about $9.9 million across the next four years. Schuler said state cutbacks in mandated spending items such as transportation and special education would have the most prominent impact because there is no flexibility in their
funding levels or methods. He said he was confident the public would again support the district if big cuts came their way. “I think certainly a lot of the community in the DuPage area engaged, and engaged in a very public way, and I do think that made a difference,” he said. “They were an active part in shaping what happened.” Kim Perez, executive director of the People’s Resource Center, which is based in Wheaton, said she hoped the public would come to the defense of nonprofits as well. About 10 percent of the center’s revenues come from government sources, Perez said, but state cuts would directly affect its rental assistance and computer training class programs. Just as equally concerning, as cutbacks hit other nonprofits that rely more on the funds, those in need will have to depend more on the food pantry, clothing and other emergency services the center provides, she said. “The folks most affected are those who need it the most,” she said. “Those needs don’t go away … It’s not about the survival of an individual nonprofit, it’s about getting those needs met. That’s what will make our state stronger.”

POLICE REPORTS
Q & A with the Hearing Doctor Vertigo & Balance Q: What exactly is BPPV? A: here are diferent types of balance disorders. Some sufer with Meniere’s disease, others with vestibular neuritis and others with BPPV (Benign paroxysmal positional vertigo), which is one of the most common Dr. Terri Lightbody balance disorders in (630) 580-5777 older adults. BPPV is characterized by a strong sense of vertigo or a spinning sensation with head movements. he vestibular system or organ of balance is very complex and exists within the temporal bone on either side of the head. he membranous labyrinth within the vestibular system consists of three luid illed tubes (semi circular canals) and two swollen chambers, the utricle and saccule. here is a small dense area of nerve ibers called the macule located in each of the saccule and utricle. Each macule is covered by a membrane that is like jelly and then covered by a blanket of otoconia. he otoconia are tiny crystals of calcium carbonate. hese crystals
transmit information to the brain stem and cerebellum about body movement and orientation. In BPPV, the otoconia has become displaced due to age, injury or infection. It can shit to diferent areas of the membranous labyrinth. his displacement of the otoconia causes mixed signals to the brain which in turn caused dizziness or vertigo. Because dizziness can be related to a number of both benign and serious conditions, a complete medical history and hearing evaluation is important. Treatment for dizziness is varied led by the cause and type of the balance disorder. he goal of treatment should be to decrease or eliminate dizziness which in turn can increase safety, function, and mobility. Some treatment options include physical therapy to reposition the displaced otoconia, medication, occupational therapy, and at times surgery. he ability to move about safely is important as we age. It is a quality of life factor. If you are experiencing balance problems, consult with your Doctor of Audiology.

WHEATON – As the weather warms, visitors to Wheaton’s downtown will have another way to take the edge off the summer heat with a new Italian ice cart opening later this month. Sunset Slush, an east coast cart chain that opened up a Glen Ellyn locale last summer, is introducing a similar cart to dispense the slushy stuff near 120 E. Liberty Drive on the south side of the Wheaton train tracks. Eric Anderson, who owns both local carts and is a longtime Glen Ellyn resident, said he decided to get into the flavored ice business after he and his family took several trips to North Carolina and enjoyed the cart’s product. “My family fell in love with Italian ice down there, and there was nothing like it in the Glen Ellyn area,” he said.
“It’s such a vibrant, active downtown. When we came in there we perceived so much foot traffic ... the city was so helpful and receptive to our idea. It feels good coming to Wheaton.”

He said the move to Wheaton was a natural fit. “It’s such a vibrant, active downtown,” he said. “When we came in there we perceived so much foot traffic ... the city was so helpful and receptive to our idea. It feels good coming to Wheaton.” He believes his product, featuring a rotation of up to nine flavors, will continue to be popular and eventually expand to every day of the week in
Wheaton, as in Glen Ellyn. To help achieve that, he hopes he can connect to the community, as he did in Glen Ellyn. Janet Dumas, who heads the Wheaton Public Library’s children services department, confirmed Anderson will be donating coupons as reading incentive prizes for the library’s summer reading club. Jennifer Eldersveld, a Glen Ellyn resident and patron of Anderson’s cart, said Anderson donated hundreds of cups of Italian ice to the Wheaton Christian Grammar School’s Fall Festival Night fundraiser. Eldersveld, a member of the school’s parent organization, said the cups were a hit with kids and parents alike. “I was impressed with both Eric and his wife and their ability to work with the community and wanting to be involved,” she said. “It was nice to see – he’s a down-to-earth nice guy who is easy to work with.”

Keep accountability and transparency As state government scurries to fill a projected $8 billion deficit in the 2016 fiscal year budget, it would seem to make sense to accept successful compromises and proven solutions already in place and instead focus on issues that truly have a significant impact on the state’s finances. One successful compromise and proven solution that now is in its fifth year of operation is the website www.publicnoticeillinois.com. PNI is a centralized, aggregated website for all public notices from the state of Illinois, units of local government and the Illinois court system. It’s a free-access website that is updated daily. For more than 200 VIEWS years, newspapers have been Dennis paid to print public notices Derossett – or legal notices as they are often referred to – and to serve as the critically important, independent, third party between units of local government and taxpayers, and have functioned as the official notification system of our court system. PNI was created by state law in 2011 and was approved unanimously by both chambers of the Illinois General Assembly. It requires newspapers to upload all notices to PNI after the notices appear in print. All of this is done at no additional cost to government. No taxpayer money goes toward supporting or managing the public notice website. With each new session of the Illinois General Assembly, local government lobbyists – whose paychecks are funded largely by your tax dollars – repeatedly push bills to eliminate public notices or remove them from newspapers and PNI in favor of their own individual websites. These bills rarely make it out of committee because, frankly, state lawmakers understand that forcing citizens to attempt to locate notices across thousands of websites doesn’t make sense. Local government groups are now using behind-the-scenes tactics to remove public notices from print and from PNI and, instead, have the notices placed on their individual websites. But, this time they have a new twist: They are claiming that having to be accountable and transparent through the current public notice process is an “unfunded mandate,” and they want to do away with it. The simple fact is that, for them, this issue is not about money; it’s about reducing transparency and accountability to the taxpayers. Local government officials should focus on the big-impact issues, allow the proven public notice solution in our state to keep on working and not spend so much time and taxpayer dollars on how to be less accountable and less transparent.

OUR VIEW
Consolidation efforts a great step forward In the aftermath of the Illinois Supreme Court’s expected decision to strike down the 2013 pension reform law, the state now finds itself in an even bigger fiscal hole than the one it already faced. There’s no telling how our officials will proceed. Whether the governor and Legislature opt for raising taxes, reducing services or putting off the problem, or some combination of those options, there’s clearly going to be less money around to do the important things that government needs to do. Lt. Gov. Evelyn Sanguinetti’s task force, which looks at consolidation and unfunded mandates, now is more relevant than when it was created. The state and DuPage County can’t afford to tolerate the waste that comes from duplicated services and the overhead created by duplicated bureaucracies. Chances are, everyone’s heard this by now, but it needs to be repeated anyway: Illinois has far more units of government than any other state in the U.S., with almost 7,000. No other state even has 5,000. That’s right – we could eliminate 2,000 governmental entities in Illinois (almost 30 percent of the state’s total) and still lead the nation. Sanguinetti, a former Wheaton City Council member well versed in the mishmash of agencies that lord over DuPage County, stopped by West Chicago recently to talk about her task force’s effort. “This is not the first study of its kind when it comes to units of government,” she told a gathering of the League of Women Voters of Wheaton. “Prior administrations have conducted these studies, and then nothing happens with them.”
Suburban Life Media Editorial Board Laura Burke, Dave Lemery, Matt Hendrickson, Anna Schier, Alex Soulier, Mary Beth Versaci
But the push for consolidation in DuPage already has begun, and there’s cause for optimism that it might have some teeth this time. County Board Chairman Dan Cronin has talked about dissolving the DuPage Fair and Exposition Authority, which exists solely to receive and then dole out funds to the DuPage Fair Association for the annual DuPage County Fair. In 2014, the County Board dissolved the redundant Fairview Fire Protection District and reportedly was looking to do the same to the North Westmont Fire Protection District and the Salt Creek and Highland Hills sanitary districts. And now, state Sen. Chris Nybo, R-Elmhurst, and Democratic DuPage County Board member Liz Chaplan are teaming up to ask Sanguinetti’s task force to consider eliminating the DuPage Election Commission. In most other counties in Illinois, elections are run by the county clerk’s office. “We’ve merely asked at this point that the government task force look at that issue and determine whether there is a cost savings there that can enhance accountability and other efficiencies in terms of personnel,” Nybo said. Those are the kinds of questions we need to be asking all across the county and the state. There are going to be hard financial decisions happening in Springfield that are going to painful. There’s no way around it. Consolidation has the potential to create meaningful savings in a relatively painless fashion. It won’t solve the budget crisis all by itself, but it’s certainly a responsible place to start attacking the problem.

SOUND OFF
This is regarding the message that shelters are not used. People need to view the animals because adoption is a serious responsibility. You can’t just look online. Stop shooing people away from the shelters. Adoption is a serious responsibility and you don’t want them going to the wrong people, so allow them to view the animals.
Bullying begins at home I have been a witness of bullying from friends’ children, nieces, nephews and now as young as my grandchildren’s ages. This type of attack sets the stage for a child’s life. They experience low self-esteem and no self-worth. As a result, this type of behavioral attack can lead to suicide because of all the despair the person is feeling. My newest discovery is seeing this firsthand from children’s parents. They bully other parents by forming followers other than leader-type parents’ to attack other parents. Then, from their parents actions, the kids do as they see. The parents around here need to focus on their own lives and stop trying to ruin other parents’ and children’s lives. That means stop the attacks through both verbal confrontations and social media outlets.
If you don’t like it, consider moving from Downers Grove Last week, folks complained about spending by the Downer’s Grove Park District and about the homeless in the library. Have you ever seen how busy the Park District fields are? While I don’t enjoy the homeless hanging around the library, under what legal authority can you exclude them from a public facility? The previous week, someone was crabbing about the Downers Grove Fire Department. Is it possible the same person was moaning earlier about the ill-fated plan to build a new police station and village hall? Sounds like you think everything is a mess. Maybe you should consider moving – everyone would be happier.

Hidden gem in Lemont What an incredible story that was shared in the May 8 edition of the [Lemont] Suburban Life. Local and nearby businesses helped to support the new program that has been introduced to the students. The article failed to mention, Lemont has a “hidden gem” right in the heart of its downtown. Lemont’s quarry trails are at the hub of an incredible interlinking trail system connecting and soonto-be [connecting] Argonne, Heritage, Centennial [and] Cal Sag trails. The state and local municipalities are in the midst of a major trail expansion that seems to be nearly complete. This program helps to introduce and bring more awareness to what Lemont has to offer from a[n] outdoor recreation and tourism destination.
Hire from within the community The village of Lemont workers are so busy that they are passing their work onto another firm at another expense to the homeowners for sprinkler verification. I suppose thinking up new taxation does take time. Why didn’t you hire someone in Lemont to do the work?
Glad BEDS Shelter gets approved So happy the homeless shelter was approved for La Grange. I will be happy to volunteer my time, and so will my children, to those in need. This town needs to realize we are very privileged. We need not be ugly and shun those who need help. Let’s extend a hand and make the world a better place – starting here.

I am interested in changing the shape of my teeth. What would be some of my options? Charise M. Petrelli DDS
Several different options are available to change the shape of teeth, make teeth look longer, close spaces between teeth or repair chipped or cracked teeth. Among the options are bonding, crowns, veneers, and recontouring. • Dental bonding is a procedure in which a tooth-colored resin material (a durable plastic material) is applied to the tooth surface and hardened with a special light, which ultimately “bonds” the material to the tooth. • Dental crowns are tooth-shaped “caps” that are placed over teeth. The crowns, when cemented into place, fully encase the entire visible portion of a tooth that lies at and above the gum line. • Veneers (also sometimes called porcelain veneers or dental porcelain laminates) are wafer-thin, custom-made shells of tooth-colored materials that are designed to cover the front surface of teeth. These shells are bonded to the front of the teeth. • Recontouring or reshaping of the teeth (also called odontoplasty, enameloplasty, stripping, or slenderizing) is a procedure in which small amounts of tooth enamel are removed to change a tooth’s length, shape or surface. Each of these options differ with regard to cost, durability, “chair time” 577 Pennsylvania Avenue Suite 100, Glen Ellyn, IL 60137 necessary to complete the procedure, stain resistant qualities, and best (630) 942-0727 cosmetic approach to resolving a speciic problem. Q:
What are some allergy tips to help control symptoms?
The body can react to almost anything and a symptom reaction could start as late as 30 days after contact with your antigen. We might touch eat or breath a particular item and histamine is released causing symptoms. Antihistamines are one of the 1st lines of defense as it blocks the histamine. Today there are many choices of antihistamines Bob Listecki, Pharmacist and the more popular are the 24 hour versions that do not cause drowsiness. For seasonal allergies try to start the antihistamines a few weeks before the season starts. Spring tree and grass and Fall pollens cause the biggest problems. Another activity is to stop consuming wheat and dairy products as a 2 week trial. These 2 foods are considered the most allergic foods and eliminating them reduces the total load an Integrative Health Center on the body and no reaction occurs. Consuming 486 Roosevelt Rd.• Glen Ellyn local honey is another trick to help desensitize for the seasonal pollen allergies. 630-469-5200

Suburban Life celebrates women By F. AMANDA TUGADE atugade@shawmedia.com In an effort to continue a new tradition, Suburban Life Magazine hosted its second annual Women of Distinction Awards event May 7 at Seven Bridges Golf Club in Woodridge. The event, which stems from a tradition started by Shaw Media and McHenry County Magazine in 2012, recognizes 12 women of the western suburbs for their dedication to building and bringing together their communities. The awards ceremony welcomed 190 guests, including last year’s winners and the 2015 honorees’ closest friends, family and colleagues. “We have a remarkable group of women,” Suburban Life Media General Manager Laura Burke said. While Shaw Media has spent the past few years honoring women for their contributions, the event continues to inspire others to work toward their cause, Burke said. The recipients, who were selected by an outside committee, were given a moment to reflect on the occasion, share pieces of advice and thank those who have helped complete their mission.

GAME REPORT RED STARS VS. BOSTON BREAKERS SAT. MAY 9
RED STARS: 3
BREAKERS: 0

Huerta Shines for Red Stars in 3-0 Win over Boston Chicago, Illinois – Saturday’s meeting between the Chicago Red Stars and the Boston Breakers was a game of firsts. Hosts Chicago earned a convincing 3-0 victory behind standout performances by several rookies and newcomers, Sofia Huerta leading the charge with two goals and an assist. Former Wisconsin star Cara Walls also had her first tally at the pro level and Kentucky product Arin Gilliland recorded her first career assist. Goalkeeper Michele Dalton earned a shutout in her first ever NWSL match. The Red Stars came close to grabbing the lead less than six minutes in, Vanessa DiBernardo releasing Huerta and the 22-year-oldfinding her match in Breakers netminder Jami Kranich, who rushed off her line for an outstanding save. Mere moments later, Huerta was at the center of another attack, as she sprinted up the left flank and produced a wicked centering cross that was inches too tall and skipped off the forehead of Alyssa Mautz on the goal-line. Shot-stopper Dalton guarded the net for Chicago in the place of World-Cup-bound Canadian star Karina LeBlanc. The26-year-old came up with her first noteworthy block in the 16th minute, Kristie Mewis releasing a thunderbolt from the top of the box that Dalton did well to parry wide. The home side quickly reclaimed control of the play, Huerta sending in a cross from the right and Jen Hoy’s fight seeing the ball pop out near-perfectly to Rachel Quon, whose effort at the doorstep was denied by a last-ditch sliding tackle. The visiting Breakers subsequently had a chance to punish their opponents for the missed opportunities, as wide open forward Stephanie McCaffrey wished she had opted for more power on a wide-open attempt from close range, Dalton comfortable making the save. The Red Stars came agonizingly close to opening the scoring on the immediate counter. Hoy picked out Huerta in the box and the Idaho native’s clever right-footed toe poke whistled just wide of the far post. A minute later, midfielder DiBernardo had the next close look for the hosts, her powerful attempt from about 17 yards forcing a quality stop from goalkeeper Kranich.
Chicago produced yet another excellent chanceless than two minutes into the second period, as the active Mautz nearly scored on her return from an ankle injury when her attempt from the right side of the penalty area was guided over the frame by Kranich. The home side finally did get on the board in the 56th minute, DiBernardo’s well-timed through-ball releasing Huertain on goal and the young striker showing impressive composure in rounding Kranichand slotting into the open net for her first NWSL tally. Red Stars fans thought their team had another goal shortly after the hour mark. A nice combination play on the right saw former Breakers defender Taryn Hemmings take over from Mautz and crossing a dangerous ball into the area that ended up at the feet of Hoy, who had a chance to score with the goalkeeper beaten but instead fired wide of the left post. In the 70th minute, Chicago rookie and substitute Walls put on a clinic in finishing, as she blasted past her marker on a single touch off the feed from Huerta and fired a pin-point accurate ball over Kranich to double her side’s advantage. First-year pro Huerta continued to cause havoc for the Boston backline, nearly scoring out of nowhere in the 82ndminute. Facing away from the goal at a difficult angle, the day’s most dangerous player managed to turn and release a stinging drive on target that forced a reaction save from ‘keeper Kranich. Moments later, Huerta bagged her second goal, finishing at the far post on a Gilliland cross from the left that saw the rookie defender record her first ever NWSL assist. It would be the final noteworthy action of the game, as the hosts held on for the shutout and a crucial three points that puts them at the top of the NWSL standings. The Chicago Red Stars look to earn their fourth win in five NWSL fixtures when they travel to take on Houston Dash on Friday, May 15. The club’s next home match is on June 20 against Washington Spirit. Tigers soccer stays tough through injuries By MATT LE CREN editorial@mysuburbanlife.com WHEATON – Wheaton Warrenville South’s girls soccer team might just lead the area in one unenviable statistic. The Tigers have suffered more than their fair share of injuries this spring. Ten of the 18 players on the roster, including five starters, have been out for extended periods and the team has played only three games with its usual starting lineup. “I’ve never seen anything like it,” South coach Guy Callipari said. “Nobody is complaining of not enough playing time. I think it’s the first time I’ve actually had the kids go, ‘Can I come off?’ “We have a lot of kids who, God bless them, are playing through pain and they shouldn’t have to, but we are just not that deep. We only rostered 18 and our JV team is in the same situation.” Somehow, the Tigers (9-7-1) have put together a winning record. They assured themselves of at least a .500 regular season Saturday by holding visiting Batavia (12-3-4) to a 0-0 tie at Red Grange Field as goalkeeper Nell Rosenthal made eight saves to record her seventh shutout. “We’ve just been trying to rest up during the week and we try to push through,” South senior midfielder Tori Adomshick said. “We’ve been getting some help from the JV team, which has been nice
to give some of our players a rest, but we’ve just been pushing through and trying to do the best with what we have and that’s all we can do.” Adomshick is one of the few starters who have remained injury free and she has teamed with senior Alexis Jakuszewski, a UIC recruit, and junior Anna Fank to form a healthy attack. Fank has scored 11 goals, while Jakuszewski has 10 and Adomshick eight. That gives the Tigers hope heading into the playoffs. South is seeded sixth at the Schaumburg sectional and is in the Wheaton North regional. A win against West Chicago to start the playoffs could bring a showdown against crosstown rival Wheaton North in the championship game. The No. 2 seed Falcons (112-3) edged the Tigers 2-1 April 7 in a game the Tigers felt they were controlling until North’s Lexi Pelafas scored on a penalty kick with 29 seconds left. “We were definitely very excited when we heard it was Wheaton North because we definitely want to play them again, but at first we just need to focus on our first game and make sure we get past that before we focus on that,” Adomshick said. “But that’s definitely motivation for us going into the first game. I think we definitely have the talent to do well in the playoffs.”

vs. No. 16 Hyde Park/No. 17 King
Outlook: The Spartans faced some early heartbreak this spring as they lost senior standouts Taylor VanThournout and Corky Hart to torn ACLs in games two and three, respectively, of the season. Despite having just one senior [Regan Kasprak] in the starting lineup, St. Francis still managed to go 7-3 through their first 10 matches. “Those two had been such good leaders,” St. Francis coach Jim Winslow said of VanThournout and Hart. “So we’ve had to retool. But it’s a good group and they are talented. In fact, I thought we’d be pretty good but I didn’t know we’d be as talented as we are.” The team received the No. 3 seed in the Class 2A sectional they host and open against Kenwood. The Spartans most likely would see host De La Salle in the regional final. “De La Salle is OK,” Winslow said. “They usually have three, four, five kids who are pretty good players. Last year they had two that were very nice players. And we have to play at their place.”

Outlook: After finishing the
season strong a year ago, the Falcons picked up where they left off from the opening whistle this spring. Outlook: After playing Batavia to a 0-0 tie May 9, the Tigers had posted an overall record of 9-7-1 through 17 matches. WWS received the No. 6 seed in the Schaumburg sectional and will begin the playoffs against No. 9 seed West Chicago. A win could set a regional final matchup with No. 2 seed Wheaton North. The Tigers fell 2-1 against the Falcons in a DuPage Valley Conference match April 7.

High school girls soccer teams started the season with hopes of making it to the state finals. With the playoffs starting next week, here’s what the postseason has in store for West Chicago, Wheaton North, Wheaton Warrenville South and other area soccer teams:

Outlook: The Warriors have put together an outstanding 2015 campaign and improved to 16-3 on the spring with a 4-0 win against St. Thomas More on May 9. The squad was also a perfect 6-0 in their first go-round in the Metro Suburban Conference, outscoring the opposition by a 24-1 margin. As a result, Wheaton Academy was awarded the No. 1 seed in the Class 2A St. Francis sectional. Rounding out the top four seeds in the sectional are Nazareth, St. Francis and Riverside Brookfield.
of both the PepsiCo Showdown and Naperville Invite tourneys was a major accomplishment, and our win against Naperville North [on May 7] was the biggest regular-season win in program history, giving us another highlight to a fantastic year to date.” As a result of that success, the squad was rewarded with the No. 2 seed in the Schaumburg sectional. Hosting a regional, the Falcons play Schaumburg in the opener and would see Wheaton Warrenville South or West Chicago in the regional final. “Our state tourney draw, in one of the top two sectionals in the state, presents some clear challenges,” McEvilly said. “Schaumburg, although young, has a program that knows how to win and will be very well coached for the opening match. If we are fortunate enough to advance we will face stiff competition in either West Chicago or WWS to win the regional.” Senior Lexi Pelafas leads the team with 15 goals and four assists while Hannah Atkinson has totaled four goals and two assists. In goal, Zoe Welsh has allowed 10 goals in 16 contests.
Outlook: A young team with two seniors on the roster, West Chicago has hit some bumps in the road this spring. The Wildcats started out well, winning five of their first nine matches, but have gone 1-6-2 since then, which includes a 3-0 loss against Downers Grove North on May 9. They hope to turn things around in time for the postseason.

Wheaton co-op gymnasts PREP ROUNDUP Enright leads Tigers track to hope to score fourth title DuPage Valley Conference title By BILL STONE
Wheaton Warrenville South sectional
editorial@mysuburbanlife.com WHEATON – Wheaton co-op senior Adam DeCrane has been an alternate for the boys gymnastics state team meet in past seasons. He finally should get to compete Friday at Hinsdale Central. “It’ll be nerve-wracking, crazy nerve-wracking, but it’ll be a good experience,” DeCrane said. “I’m excited, very excited.” DeCrane is not alone. With four returnees from its 2014 state championship lineup, Wheaton co-op returns to the eight-team state field with the chance to become the second team to win four consecutive titles. Wheaton co-op captured the Wheaton Warrenville South sectional May 6 with a season-high 153.15 points – the highest score among the state’s five sectionals. Senior Ben Szot won all-around [career-high 53.85], pommel horse (9.0), parallel bars (9.05) and high bar (8.75). Junior Lucas Cooperman, second in all-around (51.30), DeCrane, seniors Cory Drummond and Alec Modransky, sophomore Austin Tate and freshman Aiden Moran also qualified for Saturday’s individual state meet. “I think our athletes believe that they can achieve at a high level,” Wheaton co-op coach Greg Gebhardt said. “If we want to compete [at state], we have to continue to get better and continue to hit.” Szot, Cooperman, Modransky and Tate return from the 2014 state lineup. Graduates David MacDonald and Ethan Sansone finished first and sec-

Last season’s No. 3 all-arounder, Szot posted the highest sectional scores in all-around, horse and parallel bars and second highest on high bar. Szot also was second on still rings (9.0) and parallel bars (8.7) and shared second on floor with Cooperman (9.2). “I put in a lot of extra work on high bar, which I think really helped. I hit everything on floor and I just felt like I had a really good day,” Szot said. Cooperman only competed on floor and high bar last season. Cooperman also tied for third on vault (9.1), was fourth on high bar (8.05) and shared fourth on horse with Modransky (8.05). DeCrane was second on vault (9.15), and Drummond was fourth on parallel bars (8.5). “We’ve had some people step up that I never thought would the way that they did. I’m very impressed,” Cooperman said. At state, Wheaton will be challenged by Stevenson [152.30 sectional score], Willowbrook (148.40) and Glenbard West (148.05). “It’s going to be close, going to be really close no matter what happens, but we’ve got a shot,” DeCrane said.
