County calling for additional effort to combat deadly drug issue plaguing communities By NATHAN LURZ nlurz@shawmedia.com After a slew of heroin overdose deaths in the first half of 2013, DuPage County agencies and politicians scrambled to come up with new programs and resources to combat the crisis. Now, nearly two years later, the county has what officials tout as a nation-leading heroin response program – but progress on a pair of key programs has been mixed. DuPage County Coroner Richard Jorgensen led a heroin update presentation at the DuPage County Board meeting May 12 and largely sung the praises of the county’s efforts, calling it “the best of government.” However, Jorgensen also warned the “crisis is not over” – especially in light of a projected 27 heroin deaths by the end of 2015. Jorgensen said the county’s Narcan program, which has armed more than 2,000 police officers throughout the county with a drug that reverses the effects of opioid overdose, has been successful. Since its inception at the beginning of 2014, the drug had been successfully used 51 times. The drug has been administered to the same person twice in only one case, he said. The effort has also been the inspiration of several bills, including allowing school nurses to use the drug and letting police across the state carry it. However, the county is still seeing a significant number heroin overdose deaths, though far fewer than the 46 in 2013 and down from 33 in 2014. DuPage Public Defender Jeff York,

Those moments are often fleeting. They want help today, they’re still ready tomorrow, but by Friday they’re using again.” County Board member Gary Grasso commended the county’s efforts, but said the numbers showed there was still work to do and that Narcan was not the solution. “You have a tremendous response to Narcan I think in part because the usage is not diminishing, and I think those slides might indicate an argument that it’s continuing to go up,” he said. “We’re still in that period of education. ... and, arguably, spreading.” The county has stressed prevention and education as the true ways to turn around the use and overuse of heroin in the county. But that effort has been slow going as well. In July 2014, the county approved $67,000 in funding for a heroin education program, hoping to install curriculum based on the science behind addiction and social-emotional learning in 12 schools across the county this school year. So far, county partner Robert Crown Center for Health Education has only been able to help teach at four middle schools and four high schools. Robert Crown CEO R.J. McMahon admitted the center was “a little overconfident” in thinking participation in the program would be “a slam dunk” for schools once the county got involved and the public became more aware of the problem. He believed the reluctance has come from communities and districts not believing they had a problem and a stigma that educating kids would actually lead them to wanting to experiment with the drug. “By engaging with the county and having the support from the county, we truly felt that the primary and preventive education education that we have … really allows the schools to have the backing of the community because it’s a community issue,” he said. County Board member Grant Eckhoff, who is chairman of the county’s Judicial and Public Safety Committee, urged his fellow board members to reach out to their local superintendents and principals to get them on board before next year, when all schools around the county will be eligible to join the program. “And if they say ‘no,’ they should be answering to the parents as to why they said ‘no,’” he said.

Wheaton mom refreshes classic game By NATHAN LURZ nlurz@shawmedia.com Rock, paper, scissors is the ubiquitous method of childhood decision-making. A Wheaton mom is hoping her Kickstarter campaign will help her add a new twist to the old classic. Kathy Craig said she came up with RPS Revolution after she noticed the games that accompanied the collectible figures her children loved to collect often had rules too confusing for an elementary age child – or their parent – to understand. “At the elementary age … they loved playing and talking with friends about it – even more so if you could play a game with it,” she said. “But a lot of
the time there was no game or it was confusing … and it was frustrating for kids.” Over the course of a few years, she decided to create some new ones to spice up the fist- and finger-throwing game. Craig said she contacted veteran toy designer Rod Hoffman last fall to begin work on several sets, called trios, each consisting of a “rock,” a “paper” and a “scissors” figure. The goal was to give young kids small toys to play with as well as an accessible game for them and parents that could be played quickly or used to create a story, she said. Together, they came up with a series of themed trios, including a “medieval kingdom” and “outer space” trio, with plans for many more based

around holidays and other kid-friendly subjects. The rules are the same as rock, paper scissors, with a bit more flair. In the medieval kingdom set, the knight beats the dragon with his trusty sword, the dragon scares the princess with its fiery breath and the princess wins the heart of the knight. Craig said her dream was still tenuous. She launched a fundraising campaign on the crowdsourcing website Kickstarter to help raise money to create the first run of her first trios. She has until noon June 7 to raise her $37,000 goal or she loses all of the donated funds, then she has to go back to the drawing board. “I’m just a regular mom, so I needed to gather a group of people around

By C.R. Walker Unlike team sports like basketball and lacrosse, golf is an individual, slowpaced game. You tee off and it could be several minutes before you take your next shot. That’s a lot of downtime and certainly even the best of players can lose their mental edge due to interruptions in play. A private coach can help you with your swing and also teach you more about how to choose clubs and attack a hole, but what about the mental aspect of golf? How do you block out the many distractions that are part of spending several hours on the links? Your cell phone ringing, work concerns, birds chirping, other players talking, loud golf carts whizzing around the course and others yelling, “Fore!” all need to be blocked out so you can perform at an optimum level.
It sounds easy to block those things out, but how many times have you looked back on a round and blamed a bad shot on distractions? Chances are petty good that it’s happened often. If you’re willing to spend time polishing your game at the driving range and the practice green, you’re still doing yourself a disservice by not maximizing your potential by improving your mental health. At BrainShape in Hinsdale, you can give yourself the edge over your playing partners through sports performance training. They offer Interactive Metronome (IM) therapy which rewires your internal brain clock by increasing, regenerating and strengthening the neural pathways in your brain. It will help you improve your balance, endurance, focus, timing, coordination and ability to focus at all times, which will ultimately improve your golf game. Now’s the time to maximize your performance at Brain Shape, 201 E. Ogden Ave., Suite, 106. Plenty of great months of golf lie ahead. Don’t you want to be at your best? Wiesbrook students develop app
By NATHAN LURZ nlurz@shawmedia.com WHEATON – The Community Unit School District 200 Board of Education recently made some big purchases to continue updating its technology. The board unanimously approved several items totalling nearly $500,000 in new devices and internet upgrades at a meeting May 13, as part of its master facilities plan outlined earlier this spring. The big-ticket item was a $271,366.54 upgrade in new wireless access points at Wheaton Warrenville South and Wheaton North high schools. The plan more than doubles the number of devices that can connect to wireless internet in instructional areas in the two schools by ensuring each classroom has an access point and upping the capacity from 30 to 60 devices per point. “Previously, they zigzagged across the buildings, so two classrooms might share one access point,” Superintendent Jeff Schuler said.

After four months of work, the group met with Wiesbrook Principal Brian Turyna on May 13 to discuss opening the app to the public by putting it in the iTunes store, selling advertisement space and seeking marketing opportunities.

Shop local in Wheaton By now we have all heard the various national and regional campaigns touting the importance of shopping local. There is a “feel good” component to this call to action, but the resulting ripple effect of shopping local resonates beyond the personal. Here are a few compelling reasons for shopping locally in Wheaton: 1. Stimulating the local economy: The dollars you spend in your community, especially in independently or locally owned businesses, have three times the impact on your community as dollars spent outside the area. By shopping locally, you simultaneously create and maintain jobs, fund more city services through sales tax, provide the financial investment needed to fund neighborhood improvements and promote community development. Locally owned businesses also employ a wide variety of supporting services. They hire local architects, contractors, sign-makers, accountants, insurance brokers, computer consultants and attorneys.
2. Creating and maintaining jobs and wages: Local businesses create more jobs and job opportunities for those just entering the workforce. For the majority of us, our very first job was with a locally owned business – remember waiting on customers at Graham’s Chocolate and Ice Cream, selling penny candy at The Little Popcorn Shop, stocking shelves at Carlson’s True Value Hardware or bussing tables at Gino’s East?
3. Local businesses give back locally:

Locally owned businesses build strong neighborhoods by sustaining communities, linking neighbors and by contributing to local causes and charities. How many times has your PTA called upon the local businesses for a donation of gift certificates and raffle prizes? Who do you see sponsoring the Little Leagues? 4. It promotes a sense of community: If you want to get to know your neighbors, meet at the local coffee shop, sidewalk café or the Prairie Path bookstore. Many locally owned businesses are like family; get to know Erich, Tyler and Beth at River City Roasters – they just recently got back from a trip to South Africa where they met with coffee farmers. Supportive housing Railway oil tanker concerns ends homelessness OUR VIEW
Cleveland stopped smiling in 1987. He was working a steady job and had been there for five years when one day he came home to the worst news a parent can receive. Cleveland’s 1-year-old son had been beaten to death by his babysitter. “I still feel the chill down COMMUNITY my spine every time I think VOICE about it,” Cleveland said. Carol Unable to cope, he stopped caring about his life. Simler “I became angry and mad at the world. I turned to alcohol and drugs, which caused me to lose everything: my home, my family, and I ended up in prison. I could not handle the pain and walked around homeless for many years.” Cleveland said the turning point in his life was DuPagePads. In addition to basic needs like food and shelter, DuPagePads connected him with a case manager who helped him find counseling to deal with his addictions and inner anger while obtaining the needed medication to stay in a stable mental state. Cleveland is now clean; no drugs or alcohol. He was reunited with his children and said the best day of his life was the day he opened the door to his DuPagePads Supportive Housing apartment. “I did not believe this could be my life again.” Last year, DuPagePads Supportive Housing program served 115 individuals, including 34 children. As a result of continued supportive services, 88 percent of those individuals have had a place to call home for a year or longer. Homelessness often causes illnesses and makes existing mental and physical illnesses worse. Supportive Housing apartments, such as Cleveland’s, improve physical and mental health. This in turn reduces the need for expensive inpatient mental health care and hospitalization. Now that Cleveland is in housing and his health has stabilized, he is no longer using emergency rooms or the criminal justice system, which are expensive for taxpayers. More affordable than housing in state hospitals, prisons or nursing homes, Supportive Housing is an investment in our community. With the proposed state budget cuts, funding for this program is in jeopardy. To learn about this issue, visit dupagepads.org. As Cleveland can attest, Supportive Housing ends homelessness. “DuPagePads cared about me. They wanted me to get better, for myself and for my other children. My case managers made me want to be a better person.” “Housing is such a blessing. I feel good about providing a home for my children to visit. One of the biggest changes that people notice about me is that I now smile – life is good now. I want to thank DuPagePads for saving my life.”

need to be taken seriously
We spend a lot of time worrying about preventing things that might never happen. We buy homeowners’ insurance and install smoke detectors in case a fire ever breaks out. We grab an umbrella on the way out the door in case it rains. We arrange for our first responders to have training in all sorts of emergency situations, in case anyone in our community should ever experience such a calamity. The thing is, we never really know how likely any of these things are. Most of us know someone who has dealt with a house fire, but most people don’t have their house burn down. There was rain in the forecast for this past Sunday, but barely a drop was seen. Some first responders get special training in case of a train derailment of an oil shipment, but that almost never – Well, that last one isn’t quite as true as it used to be. While train derailments are still quite rare, the number of oil shipments on our railways has skyrocketed – and there have been some unsettling derailments of those shipments in North America. In 2008, there were 9,500 railway oil shipments recorded in the U.S.; by 2013, that number had risen to 435,000, according to a Congressional report. That massive spike has been accompanied this year by derailments in West Virginia and Ontario and one in March in Galena, Ill. Fortunately, there have been no deaths in these incidents, but the same can’t be said for the village of Lac-Mégantic, Quebec, in Canada, which suffered 47 deaths after a derailment and explosion in 2013. Many of these oil tankers are rumbling through Chicago’s suburbs on a daily basis, including on Metra’s BNSF, Union Pacific West and Heritage Corridor lines. Riverside Police Chief Tom Weitzel, who’s eager to bring more attention to this issue, has heard reports that there are about 40 shipments going through his village on a weekly basis. As Weitzel points out, most of the communities in western Cook and DuPage counties were built around their rail lines, with vibrant David Good, managing editor dgood@shawmedia.com 630-427-6270
commercial districts nestled right up to the tracks. If an incident like what happened in Quebec were to occur here, the toll could be catastrophic. Weitzel has worked to bring attention not only to this risk but to the lack of training available for local police officers, who would likely be the first to respond to the scene of any such accident. He’s sent letters to Gov. Bruce Rauner and to Anthony Foxx, secretary of the U.S. Department of Transportation, pointing out the difficulties local agencies have in getting information on when exactly such tankers are passing through and in getting training for officers. Such training already exists, Weitzel said, and there are programs in place to allow firefighters to make use of it. But he said the cost, distance and lengthy waiting list make it impractical for him to send any officers right now. Thus far, Weitzel has received no response from his letters. He’s had informal discussions with other state and federal officials and received nothing more than vague promises, or protestations that he’s overstating the issue, that the train cars that pass through our area aren’t going fast enough to derail or real-time information on the tankers can’t be shared for fear of terrorists intercepting and then misusing the information. It’s easy to dismiss Weitzel’s concerns. But it seems like every disaster of the past 20 years has had some sort of warning ignored, whether it was 9/11, Hurricane Katrina, the Deepwater Horizon oil spill ... the list goes on. Are the odds of an oil tanker derailment and explosion in our area high? Probably not. But knowing there’s a lot more oil flowing through our towns on a regular basis, it sure would be comforting to know someone is taking these concerns seriously. We’d like to see state and especially federal officials take more steps to ease everyone’s minds that everything possible is being done to prevent another Lac-Mégantic incident.

Animal shelters are not zoos
Health clubs’ unfair practices
To the person who said to stop shooing people away from shelter animals, we are not shooing people away who are ready to adopt an animal, a family pet. We don’t want the people who are coming for something to do because they clog up the shelter like a zoo. We want the people that are 100-percent ready to adopt; anybody else can see the animals on our website. And in regards to the rescues that do not have a brick-andmortar building, those people have the most limited time to spend adopting an animal out because they do not have a physical shelter. Their animals are at vet offices or foster homes. So, until you are 100-percent ready to adopt and see an animal, don’t fill out an application.
Someone needs to fix health clubs’ cancellation policies. No matter how much of a notice you give, you still wind up paying for the extra month. You pay an enrollment fee, you pay a monthly fee, you sign up right away and can start working out, but even when I brought my health club a doctor’s note saying that I had to stop my workout regimen, I was charged an extra month ... That’s just wrong.

Shame on College of DuPage’s vice chairwoman, Deanne Mazzochi. Her argument at a recent meeting was utterly embarrassing to anyone that lives in College of DuPage’s district. Not recognizing Kim Savage and Nancy Svoboda was very political and just beat those two women down after they already lost the election. We should be thankful for their service, volunteer hours and their endless dedication to the school.

• D-200 Continued from page 6 Rodney Mack, executive director of technology for the district, said the district is eligible to receive about $100,000 in refunds for the infrastructure work from the federal government through its E-rate program, which helps schools and libraries obtain affordable telecommunications access, according to the Federal Communications Commission website. Both Schuler and Mack said the upgrades would allow for a higher percentage of students to have an individual device, or even 1:1 coverage. Existing high school access point devices will be moved to the district’s elementary schools, Schuler said. The board also approved the lease of 550 laptops for staff at the elementary schools and at the Jefferson Early Childhood Center. The goal of the laptops is to replace the schools’ desktop computers, which are at the end of their threeyear lease cycle. To allow for the replacement, the $150,054 purchase also includes 360 desktop docking stations. Schuler said the flexibility of laptops would not only offer the same functionality as the desktops, but would allow teachers to take them home after hours to work – eliminating a future device buy for teachers and freeing up more dollars for student devices. “This is kind of a two-for-one,” he said. “Not only is this a good decision but it is a smart use of resources.” Mack said the district wanted to buy more laptops and docking stations than the district’s 330 elementary classrooms to provide them for other elementary staff and to have back-ups. “There are plenty of offices and administrators who would benefit from having a docking station, and as we move through that, to have some as some break – it’s a lower cost option,” he said. The board also approved the $47,635.50 purchase of 50 new smart flat-panel televisions. The new displays will be used in the 43 remaining district classrooms without any projection systems, and serve as back-ups to replace older LCD projection devices. Mack said the televisions have embedded Web browsers that make them as functional as what is in most classrooms, but have a longer life than current maintenance-heavy bulb projectors – lasting up to eight to 10 years with minimal ongoing costs, according to board documents. Board member Jim Mathieson abstained from the vote, citing a conflict of interest.

Huerta Magic Earns Red Stars Comeback Draw at Houston Chicago, Illinois – The Chicago Red Stars stayed undefeated in their fifth NWSL regular season game on Friday, fighting back from two goals down against hosts Houston Dash, courtesy of a second consecutive brace by reigning NWSL Player of the Week Sofia Huerta. The rookie bagged both of her tallies in the second half, including the first immediately after Houston had doubled its lead courtesy of a Kealia Ohai strike. Rachel Axon had scored the day’s opening goal for the Dash on an opening-half penalty kick. The hosts created the first promising opportunity in the 10th minute, Jen LaPonte hitting a long ball into the penalty area and Brittany Bock beating netminder Michele Dalton to the ball, only to see her headed redirect float just over the frame. The Dash had another quality look 14 minutes later, as Chicago’s New Zealand international Abby Erceg headed the ball out to Tiffany McCarty at the edge of the box and the 24-year-old fired through traffic to force a solid stop from Dalton. Houston did find the net just before the half-hour mark. Red Stars defender Arin Gilliland’s desperation tackle brought Ohai to the ground inside the area and Rachael Axon opened the scoring by side-footing a textbook penalty kick inside the right post. Huerta first knocked on the Dash door in the 41st minute of the match, as she received the ball at the top of the box and cut across a defender to her left before rifling a left-footed blast toward goal that was parried wide by diving opposition goalkeeper Bianca Henninger. Chicago increased the urgency after the break and created two close looks in quick succession. In the 56th minute, Alyssa Mautz crossed the ball in from the right and a wide-open Rachel Quon pushed the ball wide for an agonizing miss from the doorstep. Mautz sent in another dangerous cross from the same flank moments later, and Vanessa DiBernardo redirected it to Hoy at the far post, followed by a toe poke under pressure that
sent the ball sailing over the bar from close range. Instead of seeing the scores leveled, the fans at Houston’s BBVA Compass Stadium celebrated the Dash’s second tally on an excellent counter attack just before the hour mark. Having won possession inside their own penalty area, the hosts played the ball out to Melissa Henderson near the center circle, and the 25-year-old sprinted into the opposition half before releasing a streaking Ohai. The second-year attacker did well to confidently slot her finish underneath the onrushing Dalton to double her side’s lead. The Red Stars promptly responded to the additional setback. Hoy’s delicate 60th-minute touch put Hoy through on the right side of the box and the first-year forward found the net with a wellplaced shot toward the far post. The visitors continued to put pressure on the Dash following the goal, and Mautz nearly added the icing on her strong individual performance with a 68th-minute equalizer, the Houston defense scrambling to clear the Missouri native’s redirect of Danielle Colaprico’s corner kick from the left off the line. Chicago’s relentlessness finally paid off in the 81st minute, Gilliland sending a ball into the penalty area that substitute Cara Walls laid off to Huerta, who displayed some outstanding footwork in cutting to her left and blasting a low shot past the outstretched arm of metminder Henninger. It would be the final noteworthy moment of the match, as the visitors remained at the top of the NWSL table with a hard-earned point on the road. The Chicago Red Stars look to earn their fourth win in six regular season games when they travel to take on defending champions FC Kansas City on Saturday, May 23. The club’s next home match is on June 20 against Washington Spirit. totaled more than $41,000 each. Moore said he brought the matter to the board’s attention once it was clear the mailings were part of a series and should be considered as such financially. This led to the board’s cancellation of the last two of the six. The cost for the first two mailings was covered because the school did not print a third 2015 issue of its informational magazine, Impact, Moore said, instead opting to increase the size of an earlier edition. To pay for mailers after the first two, Breuder approved a money transfer from the college’s contingency fund, which is designed to be used in case of emergency or unforeseen expenditures, according to board Vice Chairwoman Deanne Mazzochi. The mailings prompted state Sen. Michael Connelly, R-Lisle, to propose a bill prohibiting local government bodies from sending out “promotional” materials before an election. The bill is being considered by the House of Representatives, according to the Illinois General Assembly website. In addition to the timing of the mail-
ers, trustees took issue with the lack of board and public knowledge of the fund transfer. College Treasurer and Senior Vice President of Administration Thomas Glaser said it was school policy that the board only approve transfers of money on a quarterly basis. College attorney Tim Elliot said an administrative guideline gave the administration permission to transfer money before the board actually approved the expenditure. Trustee Charles Bernstein asked staff to look into publishing money transfers online in real time to increase transparency. Chairwoman Kathy Hamilton said the practice was a hole in school policy and expressed intent to address the issue during the board’s May 21 meeting. “It is not clear the way the policies are written now,” she said. ‘”It’s actually not micromanaging, it’s proper oversight. These kinds of things, we can reach into procedure and correct. We don’t want to be in procedure every day, but when we have something like this it’s very serious.”
By NATHAN LURZ nlurz@shawmedia.com In recent months, College of DuPage administrators and faculty have stressed the controversies surrounding the school have not affected its academics. Now, its accreditation is under review because of the turmoil. The college received a letter May 5 from the Higher Learning Commission, which is the school’s accreditation agency, stating the College of DuPage had been placed under review. “Commission policy on Special
Monitoring ... allows the Commission President to approve the scheduling of special monitoring for an institution when it is undergoing ‘serious legal, financial, or ethical investigations,’” Commission President Barbara Gellman-Danley stated in the letter. She cited several items and media reports in the letter to school President Robert Breuder, who has been placed on paid leave. Included are “federal civil and criminal investigations related to institutional finances, ethics violations and changes to assigned credit hours for courses offered through the
Suburban Law Enforcement Academy.” Commission officials will visit with the college’s trustees and president – likely interim Joe Collins – and determine whether it is in compliance with several Criteria for Accreditation and Core Components. The review is scheduled June 29 to 30, according to a news release from the college. “While I am confident that the College fully meets the HLC criteria for accreditation, I understand the need for the HLC to conduct an advisory visit,” Collins said in a statement. “We will cooperate completely with the visiting team to ensure they have an accurate
view of who we are and what we do.” Faculty Association President Glenn Hansen said in a statement the association was concerned about the visit, but confident in the school’s core mission of teaching and learning. Board Chairwoman Kathy Hamilton said during a special meeting May 14 the board was “equal of any task that the advisory commission will put in front of us.” “With transparency, intelligence and energy, we will address any of their concerns successfully and we will work with them to solve any issues that they might have,” she said.

After a victory in April, the former Clean Slate candidates turned new College of DuPage trustees hope to address a series of mailers sent in the weeks before and after the April 7 election. The Board of Trustees, led by its new majority reform coalition, grilled a pair of college administrators during a special meeting May 14 about four postcard mailings of 377,000 each sent out beginning in mid-March by order of President Robert Breuder. Vice President of Marketing and Communications Joe Moore said it was unusual to send such mailers across the entire district during election season. “I would not want to presume to read Dr. Breuder’s mind. The discussion at the time was that there was a lot of negativity in the air regarding the college and this was meant to balance some of that,” he said. That negativity includes possible misuse of funds, a $763,000 buyout for Breuder approved in January and other
issues that have led to county and federal subpoenas and a state audit. Breuder was put on paid leave last month. In early March, Moore said Breuder asked the communications department to send out a postcard across the district on “why COD is the fastest-growing community college.” Later the same week, Breuder requested two more mailers, Moore said, on the college’s fiscal fitness and its recent community outreach and survey. By the end of the month, he asked for a total of six mailings, covering the school’s academic reputation, student testimonials and various auxiliary programs. Moore acknowledged the mailers’ messaging was “not normally postcards we’d send out.” The first four were distributed March 18, April 1 – six days before the election – April 14 and April 20. None of the postcards were approved by the board, as all individually fell under $25,000, not including postage, which does not require a vote, Moore said. Including all costs, the mailings

Compiled annually, the report compares changes in job costs with Realtors’ perceptions of what those jobs bring to a home’s price at resale and found that while costs rose consistently, values only increased half as often. The projects that brought the biggest bang for their buck included entry door replacement, stone veneer, garage door replacement and sliding door replacement. For a major kitchen remodel costing between $25,000 and $100,000, the magazine found the national average was 67.8 percent of the cost recouped.

Due to strong refinance activity through the first four months of the year, the forecast for 2015 mortgage originations has been revised up to $1,350 billion. Due to low mortgage rates and strong refinance volume, the forecast for the refinance share of originations in 2015 has been boosted to 43 percent. Quote Attributed to Len Kiefer, Deputy Chief Economist, Freddie Mac. “While the comparison of the 2013 Taper Talk to the recent jump in rates over the past few weeks is striking in their timing and movement, not all economic conditions are the same. The labor market has added 5 million additional jobs, the unemployment rate is significantly lower and housing markets are generally in much better condition than two years ago. For the remainder of this year, we’re likely to continue to see these mortgage rate swings as market participants try to anticipate Fed timing around rising short term interest rates. Unfortunately, perspective homebuyers may experience bouts of affordability shock in many housing markets. So far it’s been low mortgage rates that have helped to keep homebuyer affordability strong in the face of rising house prices, while income growth remains stagnant.” Freddie Mac was established by Congress in 1970 to provide liquidity, stability and affordability to the nation’s residential mortgage markets. Freddie Mac supports communities across the nation by providing mortgage capital to lenders. Today Freddie Mac is making home possible for one in four home borrowers and is one of the largest sources of financing for multifamily housing. Hands down of course, the chicken is the hero of the meal. Never frozen, the meat is marinated for 24 hours and cooked to order. According to the restaurant’s website, the recipe dates back to two female farm owners who sold chickens to the original spot when it was just a gas station with a lunch counter around the 1940s. Dell Rhea took over the Chicken Basket in 1963, and what endures is the carefully crafted, breaded and deep-fried meal – a crunchy, tender, lip-smacking and succulent sensation. The baked mac and cheese is a hearty complementary dish to the main course. Tiny elbow macaroni are smothered in what the eatery describes as a “Colorado River of Cheese Sauce,” topped with shredded cheeses and baked until golden brown. The restaurant menu extends to sandwiches, ribs, salad bar, soups and seafood, plus prime rib, roast turkey and other specials on various days of the week.

The only mistake my parents and I made that Sunday afternoon was not saving room for dessert. And for those who know me and my mother best, the only way to our hearts is a classic root beer float. Dell Rhea’s, which also proposes a Route 66 Dreamsicle Float and a slice of apple, key lime or cherry pie, keeps in mind that the best way to truly start and end a meal is with the company you keep, savoring the time you spend together.

WILLOWBROOK – Dell Rhea’s Chicken Basket is tucked among small, one-story buildings and a few chain hotels on a dusty, winding road that once reigned as Route 66. Today, the towering neon marquee of the Willowbrook establishment enjoys a quieter perch. Inside tells a different story. Clusters of relatives and favorite friends are gathered around small tables draped in red-andwhite-checkered tablecloths. A darker shade of patterned red curtains flanks the windows. Ceramic chickens, framed newspaper articles and photographs fill in the spaces of sporadically placed shelves and countertops. A small fireplace stands flat against the wall on the far end of the dining room. The room feels familiar. It feels like home. And there’s no denying that the 66-plus-yearold restaurant has greeted passersby throughout the decades, treated them like family and wished them well on the way to their destinations. As for the Chicken Basket, it arrived in the Route 66 Hall of Fame. As my parents and I took our seats and scanned the menu, we adopted the rhythm of the nostalgic room, swapping smiles and stories. Importantly, we prepped ourselves for the beginning of our comfort food adventure. We began our meal with appetizers we consider classic – fried chicken liver and gizzards. The tasty starters were served with sweet-and-spicy barbecue sauce. What’s noteworthy about them is their flaky coating, especially the chicken gizzards. Both were crispy, moist and lightly seasoned – neither bogged down by a dry outer crust nor drowning in oil. Our appetizers were followed shortly by two of Dell Rhea’s specialties – its famous fried chicken in a basket and baked mac and cheese. The basket comes with four, finger-licking pieces of chicken (leg, wing, breast and thigh), shoestring french fries, homemade coleslaw and baked biscuits. I don’t even know

State final team scores
editorial@mysuburbanlife.com HINSDALE – Wheaton co-op senior Ben Szot lost out on the chance to compete in all six events at the 2014 boys gymnastics team state meet. On May 15, he performed in all six events and nearly won the state allaround championship in the state meet at Hinsdale Central. “I put a lot of effort and a lot of work in the gym,” Szot said. Szot and his teammates turned a supposed rebuilding season into a fifth straight top-three state trophy. Wheaton co-op was second to Stevenson after winning the previous three state titles. Szot was second in the all-around (52.55) to Niles West junior Nomondalai Wheaton co-op gymnast Ben Szot com- Jamiyankhuu (52.70). Szot and junior petes on rings May 16 in the individual Lucas Cooperman added seven top-five finals at the state meet. Szot finished sec- individual all-state medals Saturday. “We exceeded all of our goals and ond in the all-around and made four event expectations,” Szot said. “I hit all of finals, placing third on rings.

This year we had a talented team as well, but they really had to work for it.” Wheaton co-op nearly became the

second team to win four straight titles but came up just short of surging Stevenson. “Stevenson deserved it. They earned it,” Cooperman said. “They worked hard and beat us, but we did a great job, too, and we should be proud of that.” Szot was third on still rings (9.05), just 0.05 behind the co-champions, third on parallel bars (8.95), fourth on horse (9.0) and eighth on vault (8.85). Cooperman was second on parallel bars (9.0) and fourth on floor (9.2). He was 13th in all-around (49.45). Seniors Adam DeCrane, Joey Drummond and Alec Modransky, sophomore Austin Tate and freshman Aiden Moran also were individual qualifiers. In 2014, Szot lost his team state spot on high bar to Cooperman after a challenge at practice. They concluded Saturday’s meet by sharing the fourth-place medal in that event with scores of 8.25. “I thought that was a perfect ending to how hard (Cooperman) and I work in the gym,” Szot said.

The Tigers advanced to the Wheaton North regional final with a 5-1 win against West Chicago on May 19. Anna Fank scored four goals while Alexis Jakuszewski also found the back of the net for the WWS, which improved to 11-7-2 on the season.
Tigers send 10 entries to state; North’s Noyes waits for berth By BILL STONE editorial@mysuburbanlife.com CAROL STREAM – Wheaton Warrenville South seniors Heidi Yamane and Hannah Kats often bring out the best in each other as throwers. On Thursday, they shared advancing to the Class 3A girls track and field state meet for the first time. “This is something that I’ve wanted since freshman year,” Kats said. “Going there alone is tough as it is, but now that we have each other, it’s going to be a lot better for support.” The Tigers did not win any events at the Glenbard North sectional yet earned 10 state berths with top-two finishes or state-qualifying standards at the sectional and was second to Prospect (95 to 85 points) in the team standings. Qualifying were Yamane (discus
and shot put); seniors Heidi Nassos (pole vault, triple jump) and Alex Enright (high jump, 300-meter hurdles); Kats (shot put); sophomore Sara Atkins (1,600); the 4x800 relay of Atkins, Emma Schroer, Stephanie Gorski and Kendall Laveen; and 4x200 relay comprised of Kaydee Snodgress, Emily Gilligan, Sabine Fahey and Tamera Patterson. Yamane qualified on both of her first throws – a third-place 121 feet, 5 inches throw in discus and fourthplace 39-7 shot – after surpassing the qualifying standards (117-6 and 37-8, respectively) during the season. “I was so nervous,” Yamane said. “Right when I hit [qualifying], a huge burden just left my shoulders.” Kats already had qualified with 3711 before her final throw – a third-place throw of 40-7.5 that broke the 39-11.5 school record from 1990.
“That’s insane,” Kats said of breaking the longstanding record. “It’s just crazy.” Enright was second in high jump (5-3) and the 300 hurdles (37.0). Also second were Atkins (5:09.40 in the 1,600), the 4x800 relay (season-best 9:32.57) and 4x200 relay (1:46.06). Nassos, who had an all-state eighthplace finish in pole vault in 2014 (11 feet), cleared a fourth-place 10-6 to advance and then focused on triple jump. On her next-to-last jump, Nassos’ thirdplace 35-10.25 distance beat the 35-8 qualifying standard. Wheaton North junior Naomi Noyes qualified in the 800. Her fourthplace time of 2:19.44 beat the state cut of 2:19.74. “I had to wait 15 minutes and when I found out I qualified, I just broke down crying,” Noyes said. “It was the best feeling ever.”

WHEATON – Wheaton North’s girls soccer team played about as well as it could in the opening half of the Class 3A regional semifinal May 19 but didn’t have any goals to show for it. That all changed soon after intermission. Receiving a goal from Gwyneth Phillips less than seven minutes into the second half, and another from Lexi Pelafas 10 minutes later, the Falcons went on to defeat Schaumburg 2-1. The squad, which is hosting the regional, will square off against Wheaton Warrenville South in the final at 6 p.m. May 22. The two rivals met April 7, with Wheaton North defeating the Tigers 2-1. “The first 40 minutes, I don’t know if we could have played any better,” Wheaton North coach Tim McEvilly said. “We had a lot of opportunities and had several quality chances off those opportunities. “So we felt great going into the second half. We told the girls to keep things simple and I felt we did that, especially at the beginning [of the second half].” Phillips’ goal came off a shot from about 20 yards out that went over the top of the Saxons’ goalie and was preceded by a great individual play by Erica Benson - ebenson@shawmedia.com Hannah Atkinson. Wheaton North’s Gwyneth Phillips settles the ball amidst a pair of Oswego East players “I saw the ball going up the other May 11. Phillips had a second-half goal to break a scoreless tie in a regional playoff game side of the field, and thought I could the Falcons won May 19. sneak up,” Phillips said. “When Han-
nah hit the ball across, I saw the ball bounce back toward me. I said to myself, don’t sky it. I let it come to me and hit it with my left foot, and I saw it go up and drop over.” Pelafas then found the back of the net off an assist from Margaret Hupp. Schaumburg cut the deficit in half with 16:33 remaining, but goalie Zoe Welsh made a strong save with less than five minutes remaining to preserve the tough win. “Every state playoff game is going to be like this,” McEvilly said. Wheaton North was coming off an outstanding regular season which included the program’s first conference championship since 2006, when the team went on to bring home a thirdplace state trophy. The team notched wins against Naperville North, Hinsdale Central and Loyola, among others. “In retrospect, when we got third in the state, we were 19-0-1 in the regular season,” McEvilly said. “That was an extraordinary team. This regular season, we only lost one game in regulation and the competition we faced was extremely high. It’s probably the best regular season we’ve ever had as a program when you factor in the competition we faced.”

SUBURBAN LIFE MEDIA The high school baseball regular season is winding down and the first pitches of the postseason are about to be thrown. Here’s the playoff outlook for St. Francis, Wheaton North and Wheaton Warrenville South:
SUBURBAN LIFE MEDIA
St. Francis Regional: St. Francis Sectional: Sycamore Regional seed: No. 1 First game: 4:30 p.m. May 27 vs. No. 4 Sandwich/No. 5 Plano
Outlook: The Spartans have put together a strong campaign under firstyear head coach Nick Hall and were rewarded with the top seed at their own Class 3A regional. The squad was Suburban Christian Conference champion with a 9-0 mark and is 20-9 overall. Jason Sullivan is hitting .421 on the spring with four home runs and 28 RBIs and also is 7-1 on the mound with a 0.98 ERA. Jake Radel is batting .401 with 29 RBIs, Brett Whelton is at .398 with four homers and 35 RBIs and Will Purdom checks in at .385 with 29 runs scored.
