Dealing With Hypertension
Andrew Waters, MD, FACC, RPVI,
Board-Certified Cardiologist, On Recognizing and Dealing With Hypertension

How widespread is hypertension (high blood pressure) across the country?
According to data from a recent National Health and Nutrition Examination Survey, the prevalence of ageadjusted hypertension was approximately 45 percent among adults, but it increased with age. In patient’s 40 to 59, the prevalence was 54 percent and in patients 60 and over, the prevalence was 74 percent.
Why is it dangerous to have high blood pressure?
Untreated hypertension can lead to higher rates of coronary disease, stroke, heart failure, chronic kidney disease and vision loss. Unfortunately, hypertension often has no symptoms, and without routine monitoring, patients can be hypertensive for many years without knowing it.
What are the major factors that can cause high blood pressure?
Factors that increase the risk of hypertension include non-modifiable risk factors such as age, but also factors such as sedentary lifestyle, obesity and in some cases, it can be associated with sodium intake in the diet — since some patients with hypertension are particularly salt sensitive.
What are the biggest lifestyle changes that can help lower blood pressure?
Dietary salt restriction has been found to be helpful, especially for patients with coexisting diabetes and chronic kidney disease. In patients who are obese, weight loss has been shown to help with hypertension. Different forms of exercise (aerobic, dynamic resistance and isometric resistance) have all been shown to help lower blood pressure.
What are some good foods for lowering blood pressure?
Generally, limiting sodium intake and foods rich in potassium will help with the treatment of hypertension. The best-known diet to help with hypertension is the DASH diet, which tends to be high in fruits, vegetables, poultry, fish and nuts and low in sweets, sugar sweetened beverages and red meats.

Good Heart Health Can Mean Good Brain Health
Your heart pumps blood through vessels to every part of your body, including your brain. Anything that damages your blood vessels or impairs blood flow — including coronary heart disease — puts your brain at risk for serious problems — including a stroke, sometimes called a “brain attack,” which happens when a clot or plaque blocks a blood vessel in the brain or when a blood vessel in the brain bursts.
Understanding and managing your blood pressure can help keep your brain healthy and your mind sharp for as long as possible.
At AdventHealth, we offer HEARTaware, a free, online heart disease risk assessment designed to help you identify your risk factors for developing heart disease. To complete a quick and free heart risk assessment, visit AdventHealthKC.com/Heart. At the end of the free assessment, you can download a summary of your results and share them with your primary care physician, if you choose.
There are five blood pressure ranges recognized by the American Heart Association:
Normal: Less than 120/80 systolic (the pressure when your heart pushes blood out) and diastolic (the pressure when your heart rests between beats). You should stick with heart-healthy habits like following a balanced diet and getting regular exercise.
Elevated: From 120 to 129 systolic and less than 80 diastolic. You are likely to develop high blood pressure unless steps are taken to control the condition.
Hypertension Stage 1: From 130 to 139 systolic or 80 to 89 diastolic. Your doctor is likely to prescribe lifestyle changes and may consider adding blood pressure medication.
Hypertension Stage 2: At 140/90 or higher. Your doctor is likely to prescribe a combination of blood pressure medications and lifestyle changes.
Hypertensive Crisis: Requires medical attention. If your readings suddenly exceed 180/120, wait five minutes and then test your blood pressure again. If your readings are still unusually high, contact your doctor immediately. You could be experiencing a hypertensive crisis.
