Helping Us Build Our Community Strong
The Chamber’s Legislative Action Committee chaired by Marty Lewis, superintendent of Gordon Cooper Technology Center, represents the interests of the area business community state and federal government. Committee members meet with elected officials to advocate for business-friendly public policies and to discuss topics that are concerns of the business community. Each year the Committee prepares Key Legislative Principles that stake out the Chamber’s positions on issues – ranging from transportation to taxation to healthcare – that come before the Oklahoma General Assembly. Chamber staff and committee members are in the process of putting together Legislative Luncheons for our members and the general public to hear from our state legislators.

30th annual Leadership Shawnee class serving Family Promise Shawnee
Begun nearly three decades ago to promote a deeper investment by the town’s professionals in Shawnee, Leadership Shawnee’s class of 2014 has spent the past months learning more about a town many have lived in all their lives. Sponsored by the Greater Shawnee Chamber of Commerce, the annual program is an eye opening experience for newcomers and longtime residents alike. “The Chamber’s Leadership Shawnee program takes up-and-coming business professionals and sends them back to school,” explained Vice-President and COO of the Greater Shawnee Chamber of Commerce, Cindy Lantz. “The classroom and subject being taught is the greater Shawnee area. Upon graduation, the program sends a new batch of leaders, a diverse group from a variety of sectors, back into their local community with the skills, contacts and information to turn their commitment to improving the town into action.” Over the course of the class, Leadership Shawnee members learn about the town’s economy, resources and challenges. Even for individuals that have lived in Shawnee for decades, the issues impacting the town can come as a surprise. “I realize now how much happens in this city that I have taken for granted,” explained Dana Shelburne, a 2014 class member. “There are so many citizens serving in such great ways. It really
makes me want to be more involved in my city.” Each year’s Leadership Shawnee class chooses a project. This endeavor involves the entire class’s participation in donating their time and effort to serve one of Shawnee’s many social service providers. For the Leadership Shawnee Class of 2014, the choice of project was selected by Shelburne, a legal assistant for the Shawnee city attorney’s office. Family Promise of Shawnee, Inc. is a local nonprofit organization that helps low income families with children get back on their feet, by providing shelter, warm meals and case management. In 2013 alone, it served 19 families with housing for an average stay of 42 days. Of those individuals, 47 were under the age of 18, while another 21 were under the age of five. “I have known abouta Family Promise Day Center since their beginning here in Shawnee,” said Shelburne. “Our church has been a sponsor the entire time. I think they just do a great job of helping families get back on their feet, and they do it right by giving them the tools they need to succeed. I am especially impressed that this program chose to partner this work with area churches.” Fellow 2014 class members fulfilled a similar role that congregations like Shelburne’s do throughout the year. Guests at Family Promise are housed and provided evening meals by
a different Shawnee church each week. Leadership Shawnee class members provided food and company on three separate evenings’ dinners as hosts to the organization’s guests. “Family Promise is a hand up rather than just a hand out,” said Executive Director Gordona Rowell. “Our program is committed to helping low income families with children achieve lasting independence. We do this by providing shelter, meal assistance, support services and programs designed to address the underlying causes of homelessness.” The home office and day center at Family Promise of Shawnee have undergone large scale renovations in the past year, and some Leadership Shawnee class members spent time assembling, moving and rearranging furniture. Several leadership class members also organized the day center’s garage and warehouse, where guests’ items are stowed during their stay with Family Promise. “Our staff is small and our ‘muscle’ is limited, so having help to move around some of the large items and really dig through some of the clutter is invaluable,” said Rowell. Leadership Shawnee participants also worked together to provide some basic household items that the Family Promise’s guests needed. Shelburne organized donations from program participants so that it was able to restock its washcloth and bath towel stocks for incoming clients. Family Promise is always in need of volunteers, which the 2014 Leadership Shawnee Program has helped fill that void in the past months. This need is always present however, as volunteerism from the town’s citizens and parishes is center
to Family Promise’s goal of providing an extensive support network to a diverse set of clients. “One thing we’ve learned through serving Family Promise this year is that the program is always in need of volunteers,” said Oz Mitchell, a class participant and partner at Swearingen-Mitchell CPAs PC. “It’s a place that helps those who really need it help themselves, and I always recommend anyone looking to help out to give their time there.” The class project is a significant part of Leadership Shawnee’s mission this year, though other requirements included meetings with several public and private organizations around town. These interactions go back to the base of what the Leadership Shawnee initially intended to be, a way of encouraging the town’s upcoming leaders to invest their time and effort into the place they call home. For programs like Family Promise of Shawnee, that investment by the 2014 Leadership Shawnee class is a key factor in keeping its services available to those in need of a helping hand.

Patterson & Associates Construction, LLC Said Family Promise Executive Director Rowell, “Without volunteers we cease to exist. The investment of both time and money made by our volunteers into our program and the lives of these families is a powerful testimony of the good that can still be found in our world.
