OKLAHOMA VETERANS MEMORIAL
Veterans Day ceremony set to honor military drawn by Tom Smith, a local veteran, of a five-point star symbolizing each branch of the military.
Visitors enter through a 26,000-pound solid granite archway that includes etchings of soldiers representative of World War I and II. Architectural plans were drawn up and submitted to SI memorial contractors out of their Tulsa field office.
The Veterans Memorial project, 11 years in the making, to honor all Oklahomans who have made the ultimate sacrifice for America was completed in Shawnee in 2016.

This year's Veterans Day Program is set for 11:11 a.m. today at the Oklahoma Veterans Memorial in Woodland Veterans Park in downtown Shawnee. At this time last year, the memorial park was still awaiting the installation of its grand finale, 10 black granite panels — each 6 feet wide, 6 feet tall, about eight inches thick and weighing 5,400 pounds — displaying the names of more than 7,000 Oklahoma military members who have died in combat since the Spanish-American War.
Ceremony At today's event, after the ringing
of the Naval bell, a Posting of the Colors and the Pledge of Allegiance, the community will hear from speaker Retired Col. Pam Snider. Messages of honor also will be delivered by Maj. Richelle Treece and from some local veterans units: Jeff Branum with Disabled American Veterans (DAV); Don Plumley with the Veterans of Foreign Wars (VFW); and Jim Comrey with the American Legion. The VFW Honor Guard will present a 21-gun salute and play Taps. Following the ceremony, there will be a veteran lunch hosted by the VFW Auxiliary at Post 1317.
Veterans Memorial According to Visit Shawnee Inc., at visitshawnee.com, the memorial site is patterned after a concept first
The granite panels arrived from overseas –– which took several months to receive –– and the etching work was completed in Tulsa. At that time, the estimated cost for the project was thought to be approximately $350,000 — a number that has easily been surpassed. “I don't know how much the total cost actually is, but I estimate it to be at least more than $500,000,” Bill Ford said. On the Pottawatomie County Veterans Memorial website, at pcvm.org, the four veterans’ organizations VFW, American Legion, DAV, and 40/8 took orders for engraved bricks, selling raffle
tickets for a one-of-a-kind engraved Colt pistol, and speaking to various county-wide groups for support and financial assistance.
Scouting for Food During the ceremony, local Boy Scouts will be collecting canned goods as part of their annual Scouting for Food drive between 10 a.m. and noon across the street from the Oklahoma Veterans Memorial in Woodland Veterans Park. Ruben Rivers On November 19, 1944, Staff Sergeant Ruben Rivers was a tank commander in the 761st Tank Battalion, the “Black Panthers”, an all-black unit (commanded by white officers) of Third Army. On that day, the 761st was approaching the Siegfried Line near Guebling in eastern France. Rivers had been severely wounded three days earlier in action near Vic-sur-Seille, for which he was later awarded a Silver Star. He refused evacuation, going so far as refusing morphine and disobeying a direct order from his company commander to evacuate. On November 19, near the town of Bougaktroff, the Black Panthers encountered a well-positioned German anti-tank unit, which delivered extremely heavy fire. Rivers ordered the other tanks to withdraw while he remained with his tank to provide covering fire. With his position fully exposed, the Germans directed their fire at him, hitting his tank with two high-explosive shells killing Rivers and wounding the crew. The next day, his company commander, Captain David J. Williams, submitted a recommendation for the Medal of Honor for Rivers. At the time, the Army wasn’t awarding Medals of Honor to black soldiers, and the recommendation went nowhere. Over the years, Captain Williams continued to press for the Medal for SSGT Rivers. It was finally approved, and on January 13, 1997, President Bill Clinton presented SSGT Rivers’ Medal of Honor to Ms. Grace Woodfork, one of his sisters. David Williams was in attendance at the ceremony. SSGT Rivers’ Medal of Honor citation:
“… for extraordinary heroism in action during the period 15-19 November 1944, toward l wounded d d iin the h lleg, Guebling, France. Though severely Sergeant Rivers refused medical treatment and evacuation, took command of another tank, and advanced with his company in Guebling the next day. Repeatedly refusing evacuation, Sergeant Rivers continued to direct his tank's fire at enemy positions through the morning of 19 November 1944. At dawn, Company A's tanks began to advance towards Bougaktroff, but were stopped by enemy fire. Sergeant Rivers, joined by another tank, opened fire on the enemy tanks, covering company A as they withdrew. While doing so, Sergeant River's tank was hit, killing him and wounding the crew. Staff Sergeant Rivers' fighting spirit p were an inspiration to his unit and and daringg leadership eexemplify the highest tradittions of military service.” R Ruben Rivers was born at T Tecumseh, Oklahoma, on O October 31, 1918. When the U United States entered World W War II, Rivers and two of his b brothers joined the Army. SSSGT Rivers is buried in the L Lorraine American Cemetery aand Memorial, located just o outside Saint-Avole, Départm ment de la Moselle, France.

DID YOU KNOW?
Woodland Veterans Park, is at 100 E. Highland — on Highland between Broadway and Union Streets. The Veterans Memorial, at 407 N. Broadway, is on the southwest corner of Woodland Park — just north of the old Carnegie Library building and Pottawatomie County Courthouse. Veterans’ names are engraved on brick pavers purchased by donors. These pavers form a walkway in the shape of a five-pointed star, with each point representing
one branch of the military. The park is a place of solitude and reflection where one can remember those who are serving our country or have served in the past. Dedicated benches, two memorials representing each of the world wars, and an archway over the entrance are carved from black, polished granite. Displays in the park include a (1965 UH-1 “Huey”) helicopter once used during the Korean Conflict. Flags are flown for each of the military branches. Information from shawneeparks.org.
