to Shawnee, Oklahoma!
The City Nestled south of Interstate 40 about 30 miles east of Oklahoma City, Shawnee offers visitors and residents a blend of urban and rural living. Founded October 2, 1894 — 12 years before statehood on Nov. 16, 1907 — Shawnee is the county seat, and its school district is made up of the high school, the middle school, Jim Thorpe Academy, four elementary schools (plus another in planning phases) and an early childhood center. Shawnee also has a career tech and two private schools. There are four dependent school districts — though North Rock Creek is in the process of becoming independent. Shawnee is home to two universities: Oklahoma Baptist University and St. Gregory’s University — both established more than 100 years ago. Pottawatomie County is home to almost 72,000 people, with approximately 49 percent urban and 51 percent rural. The median age of residents is 34. The average size of farms in the county is 206 acres.
Horse in the City Arts Projects The Horse In The City, featured on the cover, is a city art project involving life-size fiberglass horses that continue to make an impression around Shawnee as some of the area’s most talented artists “bring to life” these graceful creatures. The horses are sponsored by companies, organizations and individuals and are located throughout the city. Cover photo by Billy Brown.

Downtown Streetscape The city recently wrapped up a $3 million project downtown called Streetscape. The project was an effort by the city to support the revitalization of its designated historic downtown district. Phase One was completed in 2005 when two blocks of Bell Street were revamped. Phase Two included new streets, lights, sidewalks and water lines down five blocks of Main Street. City Manager Justin Erickson said the project was a long time coming. The city waited 11 years to get to the construction phase. City Engineer John Krywicki said the five-block Phase Two project didn’t happen all at once, it was already split naturally into two parts. “Since the intersection at Bell and Main was already done, the two blocks of Main west of Bell was first and the three blocks on Main east of Bell made up the rest,” he said. Krywicki said there was much more going on than just new sidewalks. New water lines were installed
as well as 8-inch concrete streets, curbs, gutters and drainage, decorative lighting, bicycle parking and landscaping. Erickson said the city hopes that reviving Main Street will bring even more business into downtown. The whole project took right at a year to finish.

Woodland Veterans Park Memorial After more than a decade of effort, the Veterans Memorial portion of Woodland Veterans Park wrapped up at the end of 2016. With the addition of 10 large black granite panels placed in honor of 7,500-plus soldiers from Oklahoma, the site is now complete. Over 11 years, many items have been added to the site: a central star and flags representing the five branches of the military — placed in 2009; engraved brick pavers all around; a 1965 UH-1 “Huey” helicopter installed on a pedestal in 2011; two 105mm Howitzers; a full-scale replica of the USS Oklahoma anchor — dedicated in 2012; and a 26,000-pound granite archway etched with soldiers representative of World War I and II. Bill Ford, with the Veterans Memorial Committee,
Paul’s Place
said most of the years were spent raising money for the project. He said though he didn’t know how much the total cost actually was, he estimated it to be at the very least more than $500,000. Most of the funds were gathered from private donations, as well as some help from the city. The large granite panels were ordered from overseas –– which took several months to receive –– and once they were stateside they were inscribed with the names of Oklahoma’s fallen soldiers. Help came from the Oklahoma Department of Veterans Affairs and the Department of Defense to compile the list of all Oklahoma military members who died in combat.

Mabee-Gerrer Museum of Art Founded in 1919, the Mabee-Gerrer Museum of Art on the campus of St. Gregory’s University in Shawnee is one of the oldest museums in the state. Father Gregory Gerrer, for whom the museum is named, was a Benedictine monk of considerable artistic talent. During his travels to Europe, Africa and South America, he collected objects of artistic and ethnological value, the MGMoA website shows. The museum is home to an encyclopedic collection of more than 6,000 artworks and artifacts, spanning 8,000 years of human history and a diverse array of world cultures. The Mabee-Gerrer Museum of Art strives to share its treasures with the Shawnee community and the state. The museum’s permanent collections include Egyptian, Greek and Roman objects; art from the Renaissance through the early 20th century; and large holdings of Native American, African/Oceanic and Eastern cultural artifacts. In addition, the museum offers special exhibitions throughout the year. The MGMoA programs also reach thousands of school-age children each year with various educational and art programs. Shawnee Regional Airport Walking Track Shawnee Regional Airport, boasting a new terminal constructed in recent years, has a 6,000-foot long by 100-foot wide runway and is still poised to see expansion. Airport Manager Keenan English has been working to secure funds for construction of a taxiway/apron area for future T-hangar development. The Airport Authority recently requested the forwarding of future NPE Federal dollars in the amount of $150,000 for fiscal year 2018-2019 from the Oklahoma Aeronautics Commission (OAC). This would give the Airport $300,000 of federal grant dollars instead of $150,000 for one year. Doing so would allow the Airport to cover most, if not all, the cost. English said a recent apron hard-stand project is complete and being used, and apron lights and a beacon project are done. “The apron lights have drastically changed the look of the airport at night,” he said. He also said a new weather station at the airport is up and running.
Also, drivers along North Airport Drive have likely noticed a new hangar. Delta Wings Equipment LLC built the hangar, which houses its fleet of Cessna Caravans that the company leases out, English said. Another project is making the airport’s perimeter brighter. Lights at the walking track circling the airport have been installed. “They are spaced 100 feet apart and are designed to provide good light coverage along the entire trail route,” City Manager Justin Erickson said.

“There are approximately 168 lights and the total cost was around $200,000,” he said. The project was funded by a grant from the Avedis Foundation and is part of the City’s recent trail and sidewalk initiative jointly funded by the city and Avedis, Erickson said. “We hope the public will enjoy this enhancement and that it will allow people to use the trail for extended hours with an added sense of safety,” Erickson said.

Master Trails Plan The Master Trails Plan has been making progress in Shawnee as crews install sidewalks connecting to walking trails in various commercial and residential areas of the city. The project was funded by a grant from the Avedis Foundation and is part of the city’s trail and sidewalk initiative jointly funded by the city and Avedis, City Manager Justin Erickson said. The matching grant of $641,472 to the city was first announced October 2014, and has since been under construction for a walking and biking trail extension, plus additional lighting. The City’s recently-adopted Parks Master Plan includes survey data that indicated a need for more trails because of the public’s strong desire for a more walkable community. Ultimately, the intent has been to connect the trail system with the established airport track, resulting in a continuous 13-mile route.
Parks Plan With an array of local parks, the City of Shawnee has recently undergone extensive research to gauge what residents are hoping to see when it comes to future use of the community’s parks and then come up with design plans to make it happen. Several public hearings and town halls have been hosted, as well as survey data gathered to assess the preferences of locals regarding the needs and wants in the area’s 33 parks and green spaces — some 134 acres in total. The plan is to drop down to around 20 parks. The smaller parks can then be used as open-area green spaces. The effort also will help the city manage maintenance while it updates the spaces to be more effective by today’s standards. The city hopes to reshape the parks system by placing its main focus around eight premiere parks — keeping special-use items in the forefront, like tennis complexes, a dog park, trap range, ball fields and memorials.

Great things to
With more than 71,000 residents in Pottawatomie County, visitors may experience both urban and rural cultures while in Shawnee.
Community Renewal Community Renewal is spreading like wildfire throughout Shawnee. “We Care.” signs are dotted all over neighborhoods, showing others that this community cares. The nonprofit group’s leadership — Director Brandon Dyer; Jan Tipton, Care Team coordinator; and Travis Flood, Friendship House director –– has consistently been challenging members of the community to make a purposeful effort to reach out to each other by caring intentionally. The group is tasked with purposefully building relationships in the community. In its first year, Dyer said the local nonprofit counted 1,400 members in its We Care. team and almost 100 block leaders. As Dyer and his team keeps applying the pressure to gather every last resident into its fold, it’s now pushing ahead in a deeper move — Friendship Houses. “We just bought some property where our first Friendship House will be, and where Flood will reside with his family,” Dyer said. Moving a trained staff member into a neighborhood is a good example of how a Friendship House — and future ones — intend to serve the community. Flood and his family will become a resource for their neighbors. It will feature a community room where neighborhood meetings and after-school programs can be held. On its heels, the groundwork for a second Friendship House is already in the works, as Dyer announced the Absentee Shawnee Housing Authority (ASHA) recently reached out to him regarding a partnership opportunity. The Community Renewal of Pottawatomie County office is at 1000 N. Kickapoo. 16 2017 LIFESTYLES GUIDE

Blue Zones City When Shawnee’s Avedis Foundation launched a partnership with the Blue Zones program, the city immediately jumped on board. Blue Zones is a wellbeing initiative to improve health outcomes; it has estimated that the area could see $44 million in medical cost savings alone over the next 10 years through the program, as well as many other benefits. Blue Zones Senior Vice President Tony Buettner said he’s never seen a community so poised to do extraordinary things. Blue Zones Project coordinators have since been
working to establish the program in Pottawatomie County. The Blue Zones Project is based on the assumption that we spend 90 percent of our lives in a 20-mile “Life Radius.” Within that life radius we focus on optimizing: the built environment; municipal policies and ordinances; restaurants, schools, grocery stores and workplaces; social networks; habitat; and inner selves. million for new construction and upgrades; and about $3 million for athletic and activities improvements.
In 2016, voters approved a $32,225,000 school bond issue to update and upgrade a large chunk of items on the district’s wish list.
The proposition passed by 72.45 percent.
Among the security items on the list are making school sites safer by securing entries and lobbies. Other improvements include adding safe rooms to three elementary schools and the high school, along with construction of a new elementary school in northwest Shawnee.
The bond project included four key focus areas for the district: almost $7 million for safety and security; $8.8 million for high school renovations; $13.5
Items on the list were determined through community input as well as internal staff and administration.
The Board of Education and superintendent spent a lot of time promoting the proposal.

Board members said enhancing the facilities is a boost academically and athletically. April Stobbe, seat 4, said, “As a board member, I am very thankful to be part of a community that supports education. We had many who worked hard to help this pass by making donations, putting up signs, spreading the word through social media and word of mouth.” She said the community spirit and collective work was amazing and appreciated. “The passage of this bond issue will assure much needed added safety for our students and staff, support for neighborhood schools and elevate the quality of student programs,” she said. “It’s a win-win for the entire community.”
Neighboring schools Other neighboring school districts have successfully brought bond issues before voters to fund planned improvements, such as building new schools. Dale School’s $10 million bond issue is funding construction of a new high school and gymnasium. McLoud approved a $10.6 million bond issue that will result in the construction of a new intermediate school. Voters in Tecumseh passed a $12.4 million school
bond issue to construct a new Tecumseh Early Childhood Center, projected to be open in 2018. North Rock Creek is becoming an independent district by adding a high school to its school system with the passage of a $20 million bond issue. The district could have its first freshman class in 2020.
Pottawatomie County Education Tax The vision to better the lives and educations of Pottawatomie County children is becoming a reality after voters passed a nearly one-half cent sales tax increase in 2016. The new tax, which began July 1, 2016, will last 10 years and ends June 30, 2026. Of the 0.495-cent sales tax increase, 0.49 cents is being split among 14 Pottawatomie County school districts based on enrollment. The tax is estimated to bring in about $3.7 million annually for local schools. The Shawnee district — with the largest enrollment in the county — gets about $1.1 million from this tax annually. The other portion of the tax, .005 cents, is earmarked for the One Safe Place Family Justice Center.

Oklahoma Baptist University Oklahoma Baptist University has celebrated much in its 107-year history. From the addition of Shawnee Hall in 1915, to the construction of Raley Chapel more than 50 years ago, to its recent additions of new residential facilities, the campus has seen incredible growth and change. From its first graduating class of nine graduating students in 1912, to a class of 332 at Spring Commencement 2017, the student body has grown as well. In that same tradition and spirit, excitement abounds on Bison Hill, with gratitude for the present and hope for even greater things to come. OBU’s graduating class of 2017 represented an increase of 83 students from Spring Commencement 2016. Strong admissions trends continue, with the university welcoming its three largest freshman classes in school history all within the last four years. The University has also celebrated growth in its College of Graduate and Professional Studies, adding multiple online degree options and expanding in-person course offerings to both Oklahoma City and Broken Arrow. OBU’s Graduate College now offers master’s degrees in nursing, business, marriage and family therapy, and Christian studies. The Master of Science in Nursing has tracks available in Nursing Education and Global Nursing, while also offering RN to BSN and MSN options. The Master of Business Administration offers tracks in Leadership, Project Management, Energy Management, and International Business, with degrees available both online and also in person at its Oklahoma City location. 22 2017 LIFESTYLES GUIDE
The Master of Science in Marriage and Family Therapy program offers in person courses in Shawnee, with classes starting August 2017 in Broken Arrow and January 2018 in Oklahoma City. This program prepares graduates to provide therapeutic services from a relational and systemic perspective in counseling agencies, schools, hospitals, churches, on the mission field and in private practice. The Master of Arts in Christian Studies offers online degree options in Leadership and Apologetics, while the Master of Arts in Intercultural Studies offers tracks in Intercultural Studies and Orality. OBU also continues to make improvements and additions to its beautiful 226-acre campus. Through the OBU Vision For a New Century Campaign, the University is raising funds for an expansion and renovation of the W.P. Wood Science Building as well as a renovation of Ford Music Hall. The University is likewise raising funds for the construction of a new Student Services Center, which will stand just north of Raley Chapel and will serve as the grand entrance to campus as well as an inviting welcome center for guests, prospective students and their families. Thanks to a grant from the Avedis Foundation, work is also underway for the University’s new Marriage and Family Therapy Center. A building OBU acquired adjacent to campus will be modified and remodeled to accommodate the director, faculty members and students in the program and provide counseling services to not only OBU students, but community members as well. OBU has received level I accreditation as an
arboretum by the ArbNet Arboretum Accreditation Program and The Morton Arboretum, for achieving particular standards of professional practices deemed important for arboreta and botanic gardens. Additionally, OBU is the only body to be accredited within the state of Oklahoma. The OBU arboretum began collecting trees in 2002, planting 50 different species in an area between Shawnee Hall and Thurmond Hall. The arboretum has since expanded to include the entire campus with 134 different species of trees and a database of more than 300 trees and shrubs. OBU’s collection includes many unique trees, such as a Weeping Bald Cypress, Giant Leafed Redbud, Contorted Filbert, William Penn Barberries, Netleaf Oak, Turbinella Oak, Crow Pillow Tree, Tree Lilac, Persian Parrot Tree, Tamarix, Seaside Alder, Chitalpa, Dawn Redwood and an American Elm that is a seedling of the Survivor Tree from the Oklahoma City bombing. Mid-2017 marked the completion of OBU athletics’ third year of transition from the NAIA into NCAA Division II. In July, the NCAA membership committee completed its evaluation for the University to be a full member of Division II. Over the past two years, the men’s
and women’s track and field teams won both the Indoor and the Outdoor National Championships of the National Christian College Athletics Association and the baseball team won its NCCAA national championship both years for a total of 10 national championships in the NCCAA. If approved, OBU will compete in NCAA Division II starting this year in the postseason. For more information, visit www.okbu.edu.

St. Gregory’s University Founded in 1875, St. Gregory’s University is Oklahoma’s oldest institution of higher learning and only Catholic university. With campuses in Shawnee and Tulsa, St. Gregory’s offers both traditional and adult degree programs, including associate, bachelor and master’s degrees. The school’s curriculum and culture are based on the Catholic Benedictine tradition of cultivating the whole person – mind, body and spirit. St. Gregory’s features a traditional, Catholic liberal arts curriculum that fosters independent thought. Students develop the critical skills needed to become successful and they are challenged to develop the ethical standards that set them apart. St. Gregory’s is one of the most affordable private universities in the country and is a member of the Cardinal Newman Society. The University is one of only 20 residential colleges and universities recommended by the Society for providing a faithful Catholic education. St. Gregory’s features a 12:1 student to teacher ratio with a caring faculty and staff that provide personal attention to each student. The newest of the 44 degree programs offered at St. Gregory’s is an MBA degree in Tribal Enterprise Management. The program integrates Native American business practices, tribal law and governance issues, a unique problem solving and critical thinking mindset and creates future tribal business endeavors that can be used in any Native American professional environment. Scholarships are available through the Citizen Potawatomi Nation for its members, and discounts are available through other area tribes. The Catholic nursing program was launched in January 2014 in partnership with the state’s four Catholic health care systems – St. John’s, 24 2017 LIFESTYLES GUIDE
St. Francis, St. Anthony and Mercy. The first graduating class, which finished in May 2017, had a 100% pass rate on the National Council Licensure Exam for Registered Nurses. St. Gregory’s offers both a Bachelor of Science in Nursing degree as well as a RN to BSN program. Other degree areas include theology, education, business, counseling, fine arts, philosophy, biomedical sciences, exercise science, communication, criminal justice, psychology, history, English and pastoral counseling. The main campus of St. Gregory’s is located in the city of Shawnee, where the traditional, residential collegiate experience is offered, as well as evening courses offered in an accelerated eight week format for working adults. The Tulsa campus offers adult degree programs. St. Gregory’s shares its campus with the St. Gregory’s Abbey as well as the Mabee Gerrer Museum of Art. The University also offers a wide range of extracurricular activities, as well as intercollegiate sports. St. Gregory’s is a member
of the National Association of Intercollegiate Athletics (NAIA), a group of small athletic programs which are dedicated to character-driven athletics. St. Gregory’s sponsors 14 intercollegiate athletic teams. The history of St. Gregory’s continues to be written, as it has for the past 142 years, but it remains true to the original purpose. Students are called upon to discover who they are called to be and prepare for lives of meaning and purpose. St. Anthony Shawnee Hospital St. Anthony Shawnee Hospital recently finished an extensive construction project that tripled the square footage of its campus without adding a single licensed bed to its facility. The hospital moved three departments into its brand new west tower. Carla Tollett, public relations, communications and marketing consultant, said the new construction was a 119,000 square-foot, three-story addition –– a significant expansion of the facility –– that houses the new Women’s Center, intensive care unit, and surgical services. Each floor of the new tower serves as a particular department: Surgery, ground floor; Women’s Center, second floor; and ICU, third floor. Chuck Skillings, hospital president, said the project was a major milestone for healthcare in the community. The expansion was touted to be a bold effort to step firmly away from traditional –– and outdated –– methods of operation. “We thought we were a pretty good hospital coming into this; we are a better hospital today,” Skillings said, “because we are here every day to strive for the exceptional in everything we do and, as a result, for those of you who don’t work in this 26 2017 LIFESTYLES GUIDE
building, you can benefit from those services.” Linda E. Brown, vice president of support services, said, “We believe being able to accommodate our patients in this way will help make a difference. Their doctors are already here. Our hope is they will recognize we are fully capable of providing all their care here.” Benches have been strategically placed down some of the longer corridors, to better accommodate patients and visitors to the hospital. Also, some changes have been made in an effort to help nurses compensate for the vast amount of
extra daily steps in the much larger campus. The hospital replaced large, central supply rooms with individual cabinets called patient servers. “It’s stocked from the outside of the room, from the hallway,” Brown said. “Instead of one large nursing station,” she said, “we have designed smaller nursing stations, called hoteling stations, that put nurses closer to patients.” Four new elevators were added –– two public elevators and two for patient transport, which are large enough for patient beds and equipment. Also, the main entrance’s curb is now a zero-level entry, lending to easier accessibility.

Avedis Foundation The name Avedis means one who brings glad tidings; the bearer of good news. After learning about what the Avedis Foundation does, even the toughest critic might have difficulty disagreeing with the name choice. The foundation’s mission is to improve the health, wellness and quality of life for the people of Pottawatomie County and its surrounding communities. To back up that claim, Michelle Briggs, Avedis president and CEO, can offer hundreds of examples of the group putting its money where its mouth is. “Some days I get to play Santa, but we’re not giving a hand out, we’re giving a hand up,” Briggs said. “We try to invest strategically throughout the county. We’re very careful about how we allocate our funds.” In short, the foundation has aided several area schools, city projects, nonprofits and social service organizations.
How Avedis started At one time, Pottawatomie County had two hospitals –– Mission Hill Memorial Hospital (which opened in 1964) and Shawnee Regional Hospital (which opened in 1967). On Jan. 1, 2002, Mission Hill Memorial Hospital and Shawnee Regional Hospital merged to form Community Health Partners, Inc. (Unity Health Center). Ten years later, Unity finalized an agreement with 28 2017 LIFESTYLES GUIDE
St. Anthony Network June 30, 2012, to join one of the largest, faith-based healthcare systems in the United States (SSM Health), becoming St. Anthony Shawnee Hospital. Proceeds from the sale created Avedis, one of Oklahoma’s largest foundations. Avedis retained all the Unity board members and began their new role in 2012 by investing in Pottawatomie County with $35 million to help fund an expansion and renovation to the new tower at St. Anthony Shawnee Hospital. Under the leadership of Briggs, Avedis is governed by a 13-member board of directors who also serve as the foundation’s grants committee. As a private foundation, the Internal Revenue Service requires Avedis to give at least 5 percent per year –– equating to around $5 million. Briggs said, “If we can make $5M a year, and give it away, we could be here forever.” Avedis is in the top 20 Oklahoma foundations regarding amount of assets it has to work with, Briggs said. “We have a $125 million asset base to work from,” Briggs said. “And others in the state are noticing what we’re doing –– some are in other counties. We will work to develop those partnerships, as well,” Briggs said, but the foundation’s focus is stayed on two areas: social services and quality of life in Pottawatomie County. Briggs said there are two types of foundations: reactive and proactive. Reactive foundations take in applications from those asking for help.
Proactive foundations look for ways to reach out and help. “We do both. We’re in a position to see needs and bring groups together with similar needs and develop one project to address it,” she said. Briggs said she is always on the lookout for collaborative efforts that help many groups at the same time. For more information about Avedis, call (405) 273-4055 or visit avedisfoundation.org.

Boy Scout Park Splash Pad, at the corner of Main and Pesotum, has various water features as well.
When temperatures cool off and officials prepare to close the Shawnee Splash Park for winter, they open it up one last time for kids to play — kids who have four legs. The annual Doggie Dip Day allows local residents to bring their furry friends to the pool for a fun swim at the Splash. There are two different sessions — one for dogs under 40 pounds and one for dogs over 40 pounds. Dogs must have proof of vaccinations and no humans are allowed in the pool during doggie swim time.

Shawnee Marketplace Shawnee Marketplace along Kickapoo Street near Interstate 40 is the biggest retail project to happen since Shawnee Mall opened in 1989. First to enter the scene was Hobby Lobby, with a March 2, 2015, grand opening. A few months later, Petsmart and T.J. Maxx opened their doors. Ulta and Famous Footwear made their debuts that summer, followed by Aldi Food Market’s mid-August arrival — then came Jay’s Hallmark and the T-Mobile store. One of the last lots of Phase One in the Marketplace now belongs to Harbor Freight Tools, at 4600 N. Kickapoo. The location touts more than

Before this, the most recent additions to Phase One of the Marketplace were two occupants that are sharing a building — Freddy’s Frozen Custard & Steakburgers and Aspen Dental, just to the south. Phase two of the Marketplace stretches south of Hobby Lobby to 45th Street, behind CVS.

To have more access to future stores there, a block-long street running east-to-west has been created — 46th Street — which sits along the north side of CVS. Eventually an access road will come out at 45th Street just behind CVS, for a total of five entrances and exits as the shopping center continues to expand.
Shawnee continues to grow Shawnee has seen many new businesses open their doors recently, and several more are in the works. Near the Shawnee Mall, on the service road at 4920 N. Automall Drive, Cooper Shawnee Investments was approved for a $5 million new construction for a Chevrolet and Ford complex. Just to the west, Furniture Factory Outlet (FFO) Home, at 4939 N. Union built a store. Further west, inside Shawnee Mall at 4901 N. Kickapoo, Victoria’s Secret, Victoria’s Secret PINK and Dunham’s Sports — a 61,000 square-foot store — also have put down roots. Some new restaurants also have opened their doors. Among them are Daliyah’s Greek House, at 2033 N. Kickapoo; Freddy’s Frozen Custard & Steakburgers, 4520 Marketplace Blvd. and The Garage, at 190 Mall Drive.
Also Schlotzsky’s restaurant is a new addition along Kickapoo Street. Some of the city’s newest retail projects to tout include the addition of Domino Plaza on Harrison and 45th — a $4.5 million plan for commercial developments, starting with a second Domino Express gas station; the first recently opened on Kickapoo Spur. Two hotels and up to four restaurants are slated for the remaining lots. Three common areas will be included on the nearly 15 acres, where detention ponds and a 1.17-acre dog park — privately maintained, but for public-use — will be, as well as walking trails, lighting, landscaping, benches, picnic area, a footbridge, and small and large breed dog partitions.

Downtown Block Party Boasting a festival vibe downtown, once a month, passersby can gather together and enjoy an evening out in the community. They can listen as a band plays for customers outside Coney Island on Bell Street. Around the corner on Main Street, they might see children dancing to guitar music at Shawnee’s Pioneer Library. They can join a full house at The Owl Shoppe and experience the sounds of a jazz orchestra. Down a couple blocks they can take in artwork at The Arts @ 317. Just across the street, they can stop in for pie or dinner at Hamburger King. It is called Downtown Block pARTy, and the experience is a family-friendly event that happens every third Friday night of each month, come rain or shine. The block party –– also nicknamed third Friday –– is part of Shawnee’s Safe Events for Families organization (SEFF). “There are different bands at the venues each month,” said Dell Kerbs, owner of Coney Island, 111 N. Bell St. “The goal is to get people out and know there’s still a downtown. It’s not all shuttered up or a bunch of bars on windows.” He said, “The mall can’t give you a historic, community atmosphere like this. And it’s not always about the money. It’s about getting out and 38 2017 LIFESTYLES GUIDE
enjoying life. What more can you ask for when someone comes up and thanks you for doing this?” he said. Kerbs said the block party is a year-round deal. “If it’s nice, we’ll be outside, if it’s not, we’ll just go inside.” The block party is a free community event coordinated by the Shawnee Artist’s Guild; it began with a single business and has expanded to include more than a dozen locations. Merchants are open from 5 p.m. to 9 p.m. and feature exhibits in art galleries, live music, dining, shopping and entertainment, according to visitshawnee.com. Annual events Multiple festivals and events mark up the calendar as annual staples for residents to enjoy; many of them are sponsored by local nonprofit organization Safe Event For Families (SEFF). The recent addition is a spring community dinner downtown — dubbed Night on the Bricks. In the summer, the Juneteenth parade ushers in Trail Days, a festival blended with the Fourth of July — an event that honors the history of the Shawnee community. Soon after, comes a week of the International Finals Youth Rodeo each July. Boo on Bell is a fall celebration downtown where residents can take part in a Zombie march, costume contest and festival.

An official tree-lighting event comes to open the Christmas season. By the first week of December, SEFF puts on Shawnee’s biggest winter celebration — the annual downtown Christmas parade — touted as the state’s largest nighttime parade. Residents jumpstart the festivities by attending a show at the KGFF-Jones Theatre’s Cans Film Festival downtown that lets out just in time for the parade. Spreading out several bandstands along the route enables people to fan out and get a better view, while still being able to hear about the floats from emcees. Also throughout the year there are events held to honor veterans.

Citizen Potawatomi Nation Aviary The Citizen Potawatomi Nation Eagle Aviary in Shawnee has been in operation since 2012 and originally opened with eight eagles. The aviary currently houses 15. “Eagles live approximately 50 years in captivity and our goal is to give them the best quality of life that they can possibly have,” Bree Dunham said. The idea for an aviary picked up steam while Dunham and sister Jennifer Randell were at a local presentation on raising eagles.

“We were at an eagle watch here in Oklahoma and a member of the Iowa Nation was giving a presentation,” Randell said. “He was really emotional and it really touched me. He talked about how many eagles were lost that year due to not having a permanent home.” Immediately following the presentation, Randell called her grandmother, who set up a meeting with CPN Chairman Rocky Barrett. “We showed him a DVD of an eagle rescue. told him what we wanted to do and that the tribe needed that for the community,” she said. Barrett approved the aviary and Dunham and Randell began an extensive training program, which included over 350 hours of hands-on experience with eagles. In 2010 the sisters received a Fish and Wildlife Grant for $200,000 and the tribe stepped up and matched the grant. A former resident of the Aviary, Wadase Zhabwe, a juvenile bald eagle, whose name means Brave Breakthrough, helped the aviary achieve a world’s first. She was originally transferred as a non-releasable eagle in June of 2012. She had injured her wing after falling out of her nest in Florida. She began to fly shortly after her arrival at the CPN and she did so well, it was realized that she could be released. The CPN Aviary became the first Native American Eagle Aviary to release an eagle that was banded and fitted with a GPS telemetry backpack harness. With this data, the CPN is now able to observe her progress as she learns to hunt and fish –– and they know that she is thriving in the wild. Wadase Zhabwe has been back to visit several times since her release to the wild. Another milestone for the aviary was the birth of a new member in the family. Two of the eagles decided to pair up. “We will be the first Native American Aviary to release an eagle that was hatched in captivity back

Avedis Park Shawnee Middle School and the Avedis Foundation –– because of a $1.5 million Avedis grant –– have been working on a multi-faceted project at 4300 N. Union Ave. to furnish the school system and community with a nature learning center, walking trails, tennis courts and sidewalks. Board of Education member April Stobbe said, “This is a project that is going to benefit our whole community, so we have lots of things to be excited about.” Michelle Briggs, Avedis Foundation President and CEO, said the vision of Avedis is to improve the health, wellness and quality of life for the people of Pottawatomie County. “What better way to do it than to build multi-
purpose courts, trails –– that are open not only to the public, but also to our children. We feel one of our best strategic investments is education at any level,” she said. “If we can plant some seeds early in life for healthy bodies and healthy minds, then we are all for it. We are excited for this project –– not only will our children be able to walk safely to our school, but also our community and children will be able to play in outside classrooms, trails, and courts,” Briggs said. The City of Shawnee provided, at no charge, engineering, bidding, contracting, and construction management for the sidewalk portion of the project. The sidewalks create an uninterrupted sidewalk along Union Street for 2.25 miles.
