“Shawn was well-liked and respected by his co-workers and clients. He worked very well independently, but was also team oriented and worked collaboratively to get the job done. He remained positive and driven during this period of time and was always a pleasure to be around. I recommend Shawn to any prospective employer seeking a motivated team player who is willing to learn and adapt whatever is thrown at thim. I have no doubt that Shawn will prove to be an asset for his next employer. ” - Matthew Duignan, Principal / Senior Designer, Mesh Design Projects

“Shawn has provided the backbone of the documentation workforce in his time at NRA Colab...Shawn’s extensive experience prior to his Master’s study has been brought to bear through his work for me. He has good documentation, presentation and overall architectural knowledge. His ability to rigorously confront challenges enables him to work effectively alone and as part of a team.” - David Palmer, Principal, NRA Collaborative Pty Ltd

“I have worked with Shawn in a professional capacity at Crowd in delivering architectural projects outcomes and I have taught him as a student. His skills and experience, both in the scale of projects ... in design and project management, have given him a strong professional background that is backed up by good technical and communication skills. He was a thorough and talented student and a very good team member, contributing to Crowd project work.” - Dr. Michael Trudgeon, Design Director, Crowd Productions / Design Studio Leader, The University of Melbourne

“Shawn was very skilled in managing some of the firm’s largest projects, ensuring smooth completion and extremely satisfied clients...I had many positive reports from his colleagues about his dedication to get the job done, and his ability to help bridge cultural issues between our clients and employees in China and our U.S. offices and management. His ability to diffuse potentially bad situations and find solutions that satisfied all parties was a real inspiration...I am confident that the addition of his knowledge gained in his Master’s degree, coupled with his varied work experience to date and strong innate skills will make Shawn a wonderful candidate for any future employer.” - Ross G. Ensor, Vice President, Leo A. Daly Company

DESIGN BRIEF

DESIGH RESPONSE

The purpose of this new home project is to create a modern three-storey family home with the following components: four bedrooms, two living spaces, large open-plan kitchen and dining, one study, double garage, a roof terrace for entertainment and a basement floor for extra storage and multi-function space. Considering the nature of the inner city location, a modest sized rear yard with a small swimming pool are to be incorporated into the design.

Drawing inspirations from the neighbouring Victorian houses, the design is to create a contemporary refuge that can sit hormorniously within the heritage precinct in North Melbourne. The modest frontage is to imitate the immdiete neighbouring buildings through well-considered scales, forms and jaxopositions of materials.

Courtyards and large skylights break down the long and narrow site to provide the crucial natural ventilation and natural light, while minimising the potential impact to the neighbouring amenities. Recycled materials, roof gardens and sun shading screens are applied as part of the solution to cut the carbon footprint of the build and the upcoming operation of the household. I

DESIGN BRIEF

DESIGH RESPONSE

The client’s plan is to re-configure the layout and modernise the front of the house for bed rooms, study, and master bed suite, and to expand the rear side for large open-plan kitchen, dining and family with services (pantry, laundry, bathroom and powder). Adding enough outdoor entainmenting area for family gatherings and an upper floor for the growing family are also very important part of the design brief.

Considering the relatively high density context of the neighbourhood and • site, the design strategy is to make minor alterthe constraints of the narrow ations to the existing struture of the house for a more efficient use; combine and multi-purpose of some spaces; open up the centre of the house to allow more natural light to come in; and through a muted colour palette and the use of natural and refined textures of materials, create calm and everlasting aesthetics for a hidden oasis in the bustling waterfront city.

As the family is growing, the client requires a larger home to meet the needs of the household. Their plan is to retain the front of the house with small changes to the existing structure. Meanwhile, some of the heritage features are to be reinstated. I

To take full advantage of the width of the site, the concept is to demolish the existing rear addition and extend the house on the rear with side saccess along the eastern boundary. The large open family space has been designed with full height glazing to embrace the garden views and acess to the outdoor entertaining area. Three bed rooms of similar size sit at the front of the house on ground floor while the master suite with leisure and study space have been designed on the upper floor to provide a seperate zone. Fine-tuned with the neutral colour palette, the deep cantilivers and horizontal lines are to offer greater privacy and to establish the relation with the immediete context and the surrouding landscape.

DESIGN BRIEF

DESIGH RESPONSE

The purpose of this alteration and addition project is to restore the existing portion of the house to its oringal state and add a new extension to the rear of the curren heritage home.

The frontage of the house is to be retained and re-configured for new bed rooms and master suite. New laundry with side access, new bath and powder will be connecting the exiting frontage and the new rear addition, which is an “L” shape to take the full advantage of the northern and western aspects of the site.

A larger and more spacious family home is needed to accommodate the needs of the growing family. The aim is to have four bedrooms and a large family and entertainment area with rear review and north aspect.

15

Sympethetic to the front face of the existing brick house, reclaimed bricks from the site will be resued to give them a new life while bringing warmth and texture to the crispy contemporary rear addition.

DESIGN BRIEF

DESIGH RESPONSE

The client’s vision for their new home is a safe, contemporary and fun place for the growing family of four to live, play, enterain and socialise.

While the relatively small site and its surroundings impose considerable constrains to the design, they offer some key inspiring opportunities as well. The characteristics, the scale of the traditional housing and leafy boulevard of the neighborhood are to be considered for the new house to sit comfortably within. /

/

/

/

/

/

/

/

/ /

/ /

The overall layout follows an “H” shape with counrtyards sitting between different zones of the house for natural light and air flow. This provides the opportunity of having a sympathetic front outlook to the neighbouring dwellings and a coherent rear aspect with a contempory interpretation. /

/

Natural light and health living are very important to the family. Outdoor and indoor entertaining, storage, music and exhibition spaces are to be incorporated into the design as well.

DESIGN BRIEF

DESIGH RESPONSE

The client wanted to design a beach house to reflect their lifestyle and the aesthetics they are fond of for the family of three in Blairgowrie.

The overall layout of the house is to use a centralised entry to seprate the active zone and the quiet zone on the ground floor. Services and wet areas are located in the middle of the garage, the kitchen and family entertainment area. The generous family space is connected by a semi-covered alfresco with norteastern aspect and the pool access. The upper floor consists of one leisure space, two bedrooms with a shared bathroom and a master bed suite.

A contemporary and large family home with different zones for the family and visitors are to be considered in the design. Side access to services, outdoor living with pool and a large garage are also to be incorporated into the design.

Inspired by the tones of sandy beach, an off-white pigmented render is used for most exterior of the house, well balanced with the robust warmth of the enduring blackbutt timber cladding and decking. 23

DESIGN BRIEF The client’s plan is to have a large family home that is flexible and future-proof for the household and visitors. Easy access to services, indoor and outdoor entertainment area are the major factors to be incorporated into the design. DESIGH RESPONSE

Section B

The arrangement of the house is to use a centralised entry to seprate different zones both on ground floor and upper floor, while retaining its humble relationship with the steep slope of the site and the existing large gum trees. The house is stepped down from the street front to the rear side to restrain the overall building height and the floor plate is wrapped around the gum trees on site. The simple palette of polished concrete, dark metal cladding and warm tones of timebers is inspired by the smooth and rustic textures of the bark of the existing gum strees. Large fins of perforated screens are used to keep privacy and to allow diffused natural light in while framing views to these beauitful gums trees.

The site is located just 3.3km from Melbourne’s CBD, sitting on the southern edge of Brunswick and the prestigious suburbs of Parkville and Princess Hill.

This large site spans between Brunswick Road and Barkley Streets, covering more than 5,100m2. Close to Lygon Street, and with direct site links to train, tram, bus and bicycle routes, GRZ1 zoning makes this an ideal site of a significant residential development. This scheme presents a residential mixture of apartments and townhouses bisected by a new pedestrian and bike link from the north to connect to Brunsiwck Road and the Capital City Trail to the South. 35

The residential development is centred on the creation of a new communal open space to provide a development focal point and shared amenity for residents. Low rise 2 and 3 storey townhouses abut adjoining properties, rising to 4 storey apartment buildings to the centre of the site. The site represents a substantial development opportunity within this in demand residential area.

Site area Total GFA Location Year

18 ha 1,250 m2 Romsey, Victoria, Australia 2014

The site is located between Lancefield and Romsey, 73 km, 1 h drive from Melbourne city. The client’s family, the parents and 2 children have an affinity with the land and interests in sustainable farming practices. They are hoping to have more balanced lifestyle, to experience the natural environment, and have a self-supporting and sustainable rural development. To realise the client’s idea, the project has been divided into two major components: the family house, the home of the whole family and Farming Business operation. This has been based on the reaearch on the local and regional market needs and trends of organic food and synergies between the fast growing local tourism and winery industries, which potentially provide increased targeting clients and markets. 39

The concpet is to build a home in which people can rest their hearts. It‘s a place where one can find self, retreat from obstacles, explore something new, self-reflect, and store all the memories about the people living here and the memoeries about this place. This builds the physical and emotional connection with the home. And how to enable and enhance the connections is the key. The connection between the family, and the connection between family members and the environment, using local natural materials and bluring the inside and outside while containing the privacy for the family are the focuses of this project.

MODERN ARCHITECTURAL VILLAGE CONCEPT

Tourists can go through buildings and appreciate the open framed views of the mountains and lakes, take diverse means of access and hiking trails to meander down of the buildings and village centers to enjoy their holiday time in Ylläs. The small-scale atmosphere and lighter construction create a village-like new development. Arkadi corridors provide protections against wind and winter weather for travellers and local inhabitants. The modern buildings and sculptural pieces of the village will be built mainly of local wooden material.

The aim of the village Ylläs continuing the construction of the village is to create an attractive, ecologically and economically sustainable community. The existing village structure will be supplemented by a relatively strong village center. The new concentrated center not only provides a better environment for the commercial and tourism services, but also allows for better energy and ecological efficiency. 43

LOCATION The project site is located at the north edge of a new city development zone, siting at the crossroad. The design goal is to create a flexible and modern urban center, not only in line with the local contexts, but also reflects the rich historical and cultural background of China and Beijing to support the ecological and economic development. CONCEPT By creating an unique and dynamic building form, a sense of direction and using the special material and colors to match the surrounding environment, it turns this complex into a new landmark in this region. All the tranfers have been arranged into one level to minimise the distance of walking for passengers through vertical and horizental circulation. Natural lighting and ventilation are designed around the large atrium spaces, which can accommodate a large number of people especially at peak hours. 49

Harbin is located at the northeast of China. It is the capital and the largest city of Heilongjiang province. Harbin is known for its cold yet sunny winters and called the “Ice City”. It is famous for the annual “Snow and Ice Festival” and the ice sculptures displayed in the festival. The former Harbin Water Park site is on a prime loc ation on the Songhua River bank and minutes to Harbin city center. The tallest tower will be 280 meter high and is envisioned as the new icon of Harbin. The project consists of a 280 meter mixed-use tower, a 173 meter office tower, two 160 meter apartment towers and a retail podium, as well as a high-rise residential community. 51

“Fractured ice” Deriving its inspiration from the large fractures found in the thawing frozen ice of the Songhua River, this concept suggests the promise of “new life” erupting from the iconic fracture that traces through each form in the composition. The fracture elegantly transforms very simple massing into a very memorable and iconic composition that could be a new hallmark for Harbin and R&F.

The China Mobile Information Campus is located in suburban Beijing and consists of a research and development office building, laboratory building, and a public facilities building. The design creates a comfortable and energy-efficient work environment that emphasizes the concept of communication and connectivity. To achieve these goals, a series of indoor and outdoor spaces create a highly engaged work environment and a unique image for each building. The facade design of the research and development office buildings presents stairways next to exterior glass walls that merge at various elevated gathering spaces. Open green spaces are incorporated on rooftops. The research and development office buildings consist of offices, laboratories, and canteens. The public facility building design reflects the same concepts as the surrounding buildings by incorporating circulations spaces that wrap a central courtyard and consist of restaurant areas, museum spaces, a multi-functional hall, a cafe, convenience shops, a bank and a book bar. 55
