MIZER’S RUIN
JASON GRIFFITHS FALL 2022 I 8 WEEKS
OGALLALA, NEBRASKA I RESIDENTIAL COLLABORATION I CLASS 2024 ACSA DESIGN BUILD AWARD
The Mizer’s Ruin is an Eastern Redcedar Design-Build Microdwelling located in Ogallala, Nebraska at Cedar Point Biological Services (CPBS). It explores economic opportunities of using Eastern Redcedar in a “mass timber” construction system that counteracts cedar’s negative effect of grassland depletion, reduction of grazing, wildfire hazards, and local economies. CPBS has implemented a harvesting program that strategically removes trees as they reach maturity. These trees are then milled onsite using a mobile wood Mizer and dried in preparation for construction. The best logs are later used to create the structure of this micro-dwelling for the future use of sleeping and studying accommodations. The Mizer’s Ruin emphasizes the importance of collaboration and sustainability with the majority of the project being made on-site by the design studio. This semester’s students went to Ogallala four times to build up the structure and prepare the construction documents for the interior design phases when they were not in Ogallala. The Mizer’s Ruin taught students the importance of a sustainable environment, the knowledge of building, and the benefits of collaboration.

INTERIOR I KITCHEN
The Mizer’s Ruin was created on-site with local materials, using the process described on the left. When the class was not on site we worked on construction documents for the interior. I played a key role in building out the kitchen and creating drawings of the plumbing and the cabinetry. Some of the drawings from this project can be seen below. The following semester built out these plans to create the functional space featured on the right.

INTERIOR I BEDROOM
While creating the plans for the kitchen, the bedroom was also built up. To make this housing space cohesive similar materials and cabinetry sizes were used. With a micro-dwelling, it was important for this space to have plenty of storage. With that being said, we added cabinetry above the bed and made a captain’s bed for below storage as well. Additional details were later added on with key electrical features like the lamp and fan. Overall the Mizer’s Ruin welcomes both long and short-term stays with its many features.

KCAI Revive Wellness
KCAI Revive Wellness is a resilient space that builds community amongst students, faculty, and staff while supporting sustainability throughout. It is a place for people to rejuvenate away from the world to connect not only with each other but with themselves. Revive is a unique community center that focuses on benefitting the physical being through its environment and programming. This includes sourcing easily cleanable products with low ecological impact while shaping the space for people to feel welcomed and safe. With its substantial pool and direct connection to nature, the wellness center encourages interaction with its environment including large windows, a terrace, and a courtyard. As users go through the space, they will rise to build strength, lower to rest and recover, and move to deepen the connection. Revive is a space for everyone to improve their well-being and to be themselves to the core.

EXTERIOR I SITE AND MATERIALS
This site is a private art institute in Kansas City, Missouri. The campus is directly across from the NelsonAtkins Museum of Art blending a district full of creativity and design. It was important for this building to reflect the environment around it, giving people the opportunity to surround themselves with art. This was done with an abundance of windows, natural materials, and a core corridor to connect it all.

The goal of the collective is to create experiences within the urban interior to enhance awareness, knowledge, and opportunities for a meaningful connection to nature for under-represented youth and young adults, especially around the topics of food security and healthy foods. This biophilic design provides a space for students to grow food and create recipes to ultimately share their culture with the Houston, Texas community. Students have the opportunity to sell their creations to not only the professional environment connected with the space but also the public through the featured indoor-outdoor cafe.

Radicata Una Serra Naturale
BEATRICE BRUSCOLI AND SCOTT SCHLIMGEN SPRING 2023 I 12 WEEKS
ROME, ITALY I COMMUNITY CENTER COLLABORATION I ABBY MILLER
The Radicata Una Serra Naturale has the main intention of revitalizing to create a community space where people have the opportunity to gather every day rather than once a week. This project will add color, light, and life to the area creating a welcoming and vibrant space. It will also continue to introduce the topic of an aquaponics system to Rome but in a more public and commercial way. This includes a food waste partnership with a local shelter to give back to the community that has made this possible. In order to celebrate the future it is important to recognize the past so the gallery space will represent the flora and fauna around the river to bring back its history. Functionally this area will bring both a night and day life with a play aspect for families celebrated with color, light, and culture.
HISTORY I SITE
This site in Rome, Italy was used a hub for the boats that traveled the directly connected river. The history of the area is featured above with the current sites state below. On the left there is an eidetic image, combining the past to the present.

Radicata Una Serra Naturale is a site that features a multitude of buildings, creating an opportunity for a more cohesive design. Below is an overall blocking plan that shows how the spaces can work together with a perspective of what that would look like. To the left of this, an eidetic image is featured showing what the future of the exterior space could look like before the perspectives were developed. Overall, this space gives the community the opportunity to gather together and connect with the environment.

DRAWINGS I TRAVEL
In the Spring of 2023, I had the opportunity to study abroad in Rome, Italy through the Academic Initiatives Abroad program. At the time I was studying interior design, but I was learning in a collaborative format with architecture students from Oklahoma. These sketches are from both personal and academic adventures abroad.
VERONA, ITALY CITTA ANTICA
ROME, ITALY PARROCCHIA SANTA CROCE
FLORENCE, ITALY FLORENCE CATHEDRAL
SANTA MARINELLA, ITALY SANTA MARINELLA BEACH
Traveling abroad I truly learned how much one piece of architecture can change the world. This discovery made me even more passionate about design and the daily drawings inspired me to push myself to learn more, ultimately leading me to graduate school for architecture.

DESIGN BUILD I PERSONAL PROJECTS
My passion for design all started with house projects, so ending my portfolio with them would be fitting. These projects are just some of the things that I have done in my time while studying interior design and architecture.
The barn door above is a design solution to covering my parents under deck storage. I also helped them replace all of the doors, frames, and trim around their house, featured to the left. Our latest project is on the right, a full kitchen remodel where I designed the layout and helped with the construction. Overall, building is a huge part of my love for design.
