2017 RICS West Midlands Awards Project of the Year

Launched by the University of Birmingham in 2013, the Birmingham Institute of Forest Research (BIFoR) project is a ten year experiment designed to simulate the atmospheric conditions expected in 2070. Following on from the highly successful and award winning first phase, we were delighted to deliver a second phase of works which included the installation of additional infrastructure to expand and enhance the research facility. Works included upgrading pathways, installing raised walkways to avoid the forest floor becoming damaged, installing four new 27m high meteorological masts and constructing a welfare facility in the heart of the forest. Building on lessons learnt during phase one, we utilised the same site procedures and processes to ensure the protection of the surrounding environment. Finding new and innovative ways of working, a system called ‘Fast Mast’ was used to erect the masts. This clever process allows the masts to be constructed on the floor in one piece before using a special hydraulic arm to push them into position.

“Upon joining Shaylor Group I was surprised at the number of trainees, both male and female, that they supported through their degrees and who had gone on to senior roles. I quickly began to realise that the company was everything I had been looking for, especially in regards to shaping my career and being supported throughout the process.

Warwick Business School marked our second project at the University of Warwick during the 2017 summer period. Split across three sections of the school, works saw the refurbishment of a lecture theatre, adjacent break out space and administration offices. Undergoing a comprehensive refurbishment, the lecture theatre received a full redecoration and was fitted with fire rated acoustic cladding. Removing partition walls and screens to provide the desired open plan layout, the break lounge was transformed into a modern and welcoming environment. The space was equipped with a coffee lounge and fitted with new lighting and flooring alongside wall and ceiling finishes.

Delivered over an intensive six week programme

The project was delivered in a live environment with university personnel still in occupation of all administrative areas. Works were successfully completed in just six weeks, achieved though the sequencing of trades and close management of day-to-day operations.

Project: Performing

Arts Building

Client: Bromsgrove

School

Value: £10.8m Location: Bromsgrove

This two stage design and build project at Bromsgrove School involved the construction of new classroom and communal areas alongside the refurbishment of an existing auditorium.

State of the art performance facilities

The school’s historic Routh Hall building was converted into a 338 seater concert hall perfectly designed to host a wide variety of musical performances. Alongside the main concert space, we also created five large music classrooms, fifteen practice rooms, a green room, technical space, main reception, bar and ticket office. The existing Cobham Hall received complete external recladding, a new pitched roof and entrance facilities. Home to the school’s performing arts facilities, the redevelopment saw the provision of one large drama studio and other teaching spaces. A ‘performing arts avenue’ was constructed to connect the Preparatory School and Routh Hall, providing the school with an exciting hub for the performing arts. Successfully accelerating our original programme, all operational areas were completed for the September 2017 term.

“It is fantastic to have been given the opportunity to work and learn simultaneously and despite only recently beginning my degree, I can already see the benefits of putting what I’ve learnt straight into action. It’s great to see the company investing in my skills and I’m excited to see what the future holds for me at Shaylor Group.”

of Wolverhampton MA Refurbishments University of Wolverhampton Value: ÂŁ780k Location: Wolverhampton

Works undertaken through the LHC framework

On site at the University of Wolverhampton since 2016, we have completed a wide variety of refurbishment projects throughout the Wulfruna building. This summer period saw the refurbishment of the Vice Chancellor’s boardroom, a basement social space and a chemical engineering laboratory. The Vice Chancellor’s boardroom required a complete refurbishment to transform the area into a modern and fully functional meeting space. Works comprised the installation of new air-conditioning units, LED lighting and featured ceilings alongside full redecorations and flooring. Turning disused laboratory facilities into a new chemical engineering space, a complete strip-out was required to enable full redecoration works alongside the installation of air, gas, lighting, power and IT services. Works were completed with staff still in occupation and measures were taken to ensure noisy works were avoided during working hours. Logistics plans were established with the estates team and close relationships were maintained to schedule plant access each day.
