CHART SOURCE OF DATA, PROBLEMS WITH CHART AND MY REDESIGN IDEAS
This spread is from the 2011 Marine Debris Report by Ocean Conservancy as a 25-Year Data Summary of The International Coastal Cleanup. this has become the world’s largest volunteer effort for ocean health and each item found has been carefully recorded, giving us a clear picture of the manufactured items impacting the health of humans, wildlife, and economies. Although the design of the spread is not horrible, i have found issues in the way they display their data. That chart titled “25 years of entangled wildlife found” seems like a cluster of numbers that are not easy to draw conclusions from. sure you may be able to see the exact amount of entangled animals per item, but it’s very difficult to see an overall picture or notice any obvious trends. based on this problem, i have decided to redesign this chart to communicate the data in a more visual way. i have also chosen to include the date from “top ten items over 25 years” and the information in the four circles on the left page in my composition. this hazardous impact of trash on oceans, sealife, animals and humans is something i feel strongly about and i know it deserves more awareness.

Birds, fish, and other animals can become entangled in ocean trash, which prevents them from feeding, swimming, and reproducing. Entanglement also causes drowning. In addition, wildlife can mistake things like bottle caps, cigarette butts, and even cigarette lighters for food, consuming them and feeding them to their young. They may become ill from digestive blockage or starve to death because they feel artificially full and actually stop eating.

international coastal cleanup BIRDS, FISH, AND OTHER ANIMALS CAN BECOME ENTANGLED IN OCEAN TRASH, WHICH PREVENTS THEM FROM FEEDING, SWIMMING, AND REPRODUCING.
