What to look out for this season.

s

Meadow m a h b o h C

If you like to ‘get away from it all’ without travelling miles then perhaps you should check out Chobham Meadows. This place has a real rural feel to it although it lies only a few hundred metres from Chobham’s busy high street. The site is a mixture of wildflower meadows divided by mature hedges of predominantly Hawthorn and Blackthorn. Interspersed within the hedges are plenty of mature trees, especially Oaks, although Willows, Ash, Hollies and other species can be found. Typical species in the wildflower meadows include Ox-eye Daisy and Common Knapweed.

Originally in private ownership Chobham Meadows have recently been purchased by Surrey Heath Borough Council as a SANGS site.

This purchase will ensure that the meadows are appropriately managed for the benefit of visitors and wildlife into the future.

SANGS stands for Suitable Alternative Natural Greenspace. They are simply existing green spaces that will undergo enhancements to make them more attractive to visitors. The idea is this should then, in turn, help reduce the visitor pressure on vulnerable heathland areas such as Chobham Common.

The main entrance to the Meadows is easy to find, there is a car park located just behind the Chobham Rider shop in the High Street. Please note although parking is free for up to 2 hours you will still need to get a ticket from the machine and display it on your vehicle (Monday – Friday only).

The Council aims to improve facilities for visitors by putting in pathways, seats and installing litter and dog waste bins. Nature conservation is also an important consideration and traditional practices such as cutting the meadows for hay will continue.

Running through the middle of the meadows is the River Millbourne. No more than a few metres across it is home to elusive Kingfishers that patrol the water in search of tiddlers. Another much more vocal bird that frequents the area is the Ring-necked Parakeet. Originally from the Indian sub-continent these birds are easy to identify. Their bright green colouration, long elegant tails and noisy nature betray their presence when they fly over. Whatever the time of year Chobham Meadows are worth exploring, even in the winter, just don’t forget your wellies!

Please note that during the winter months it can be very wet underfoot, so wellies or good boots are advised.

More Than Just A Park!

New 3G Pitch at Frimley Lodge Park!

FRIMLEY LODGE PARK

The jewel in the Surrey Heath crown and in August 2015 it was awarded the Green Flag award for the 15th year in a row, meaning it really is one of the best parks in the UK! Take a look at some of the other facilities at the Lodge...

THE MINIATURE RAILWAY Offering a short scenic ride in the park on the first Sunday of the month between March and November, as well as special events throughout the year. The railway is run by volunteers, from the Frimley and Ascot Locomotive Club, who build and maintain the railway. For more information go to www.flmr.org

FLOURISH COMMUNITY GARDEN This fantastic community garden project hit the headlines when their first garden at the prestigious Hampton Court Flower Show scooped the Silver prize!

Surrey Heath now has a fantastic state of the art 3G facility at Frimley Lodge Park. This top of the range addition to Surrey Heath’s flagship park provides a valuable space for the Borough’s many football teams of all ages. The 3G pitch will cater for 1000’s of participants annually, helping the Borough stay active and healthy whilst enjoying a premium sporting facility. The artificial turf pitch facilitates a higher standard of play than a traditional all-weather pitch, lessening the potential for injuries. These surfaces are termed 3rd Generation Pitches (3G) and provide a longer artificial grass blade and rubber crumb base which more accurately reflects the roll and bounce of natural grass.

The benefits of a 3G pitch include:

With a wide range of events there are plenty of activities to get involved with as well as volunteering opportunities.

• All year round usability • Less injuries • Lower total up-keep cost compared to normal grass pitches • Will last for years to come!

For more info contact Kate Turner on 07500 087689, email: cgp@live.co.uk or visit Facebook.com/flourishcommunitygarden

FRIMLEY LODGE PARK FREE LIBRARY The newest addition to the park is our quirky free library which is crammed full of books for all ages. Find a sunny spot or go into the café and relax with a good book. Return or replace it when you’re done and if you have books to donate we’d love to take them!
