To stay true to the organic nature of hair genetics, Hawaiian Silky inventors studied how specific applications and conditions affect natural hair and how it responds. The result — a vitamin enriched product for all hair types that not only cleanses but nourishes and strengthens.

Feel the Natural Miracle...

Like most traditions, we believe the deeper the roots, the stronger the hair. For generations it has been perceived that certain products were to only be used by a specific race, age or gender. With that in mind, AFAM Concept, the creators of beauty standard for more than 30 years, 14-in-1 Miracle Worker, decided to break the barriers and misconceptions to design a product so innovative and cutting edge that everyone will truly love. Apple Cider Vinegar by Hawaiian Silky’s 14-in-1 Miracles, a product as natural as it can be — fortified with elements specifically formulated to care for all hair types. Each component in the Apple Cider Vinegar line was created to cleanse and enhance the growth of healthier and fuller hair.

Publisher’s Page I didn’t realize how much I missed your satire and blow-by-blow commentary. Front row just wouldn’t be the same without you, girl! Hooking up with Keneea Linton was a joy in more ways than one. Her help in putting together our cover photo shoot, even allowing us to take over her store, spoke of her generosity and of her passion for fashion. Thanks a million Keneea. What to say about Villa Ronai? Such a magical location for a fashion show. A fairytale wonderland come to life. So grateful it didn’t rain.

ISLAND HOPPING

It’s been a wonderful time these last several months traveling the islands, reconnecting with old friends and experiencing yet again the unique pleasures of island life. Could it be LIAT has improved? Or was I just plain lucky? I must admit, however, that after my home island Saint Lucia, Jamaica remains hands down my favorite regional destination! I had a wonderful time attending the CFW in Kingston. I was glad to be there again after a fiveyear absence for a newly repackaged event, aptly dubbed “the best of CFW.” It brought back so many familiar faces, the owners of which had contributed much to CFW’s undisputed reputation as leader in the area of Caribbean modeling. Share with me now some of the particularly unforgettable moments experienced in the last 3 months: Romae Gordon: The Grand Dame of Pulse! On the runway Romae, whether on her own or with models half her age, made a dazzling impression. My sweet friend, you rock! All of my favorite Pulse superstars attended: Carla Campbell, Sanya Hughes, Jeneil Williams, Nadine Willis and Mr. Suave himself: Hector Lincoln. Fabulous Jeneille Williams, star model turned swimsuit designer, deserves special acknowledgement for her bold and sexy collection, aptly named Rogue Creations. Another personal runway favorite turned designer, Lois Samuel (Ms Vogue) featured her own divine line, The Vessel! Clean, polished, fresh and so well executed. Meiling: Still my favorite Caribbean designer. I can’t have enough of her pieces in my wardrobe. Obviously ageless, Meiling just is chic and class personified. Biggy! Still going strong. Always love his crazy funky dancehall line depicting the essence of Kingston night life. Nadine Willis and her not so little minis. Mother and her three daughters appeared together on the runway, leaving absolutely no doubt that modeling is in the Willis DNA. After watching the trio do their incomparable thing I knew who would adorn the next SHE cover. She’s no stranger to our favorite magazine, of course. Even as a child following Nadine around during our photo shoots in Jamaica and Saint Lucia, there was every indication that Tatjana was born to be a star model. Designer Mateo (named by Vogue a Fashion Fund finalist), whom I met for the first time, is my new favorite jeweler. What a fun guy. (Watch out John Hardy, you have some serious competition!) I can hardly wait for my next birthday; I know exactly what I plan to treat myself to! Oh, thanks for keeping me in stitches, Novia McDonald:

WELCOME TO OUR WEDDING ISSUE!

Photos clockwise: With model Sharda and designer Meiling. Nadine with her 3 daughters. With designer Keneea Linton, cover girl Tatjana and performer Fuse ODG

My team and I enjoyed a special thrill putting this issue together. Certainly it reminded me yet again why I love traveling throughout our region, so full of talent, over-flowing with creativity. The St Vincent show deserves special mention. It’s one to watch out for. This was my second visit and I remain in awe of this little island that continues to produce such exciting fashion and art shows. I’m a huge fan of designer Peta Odini: always trendy, cool and funky. She pays such attention to detail. Here’s another Caribbean designer whose name is destined soon to be known by all who appreciate fashion with class. To all my friends, old and new, it really was a blast hooking up. Keep on doing what you love. We’re all the happier because of you!

It’s wedding season! Those words were magic to our ears as we scurried around these past few months gathering all things white and glistening for this unforgettable issue. Within these pages you’ll find tips for planning and executing your Caribbean wedding, and if you’re planning on taking your love abroad, ideas on how to make your destination wedding a most spectacular affair. All of this because we know all too well that nothing in the world matches up to finding the one who makes your heart beat just a little bit faster... that special person who finally manages to convince you that you deserve to be loved fully. With that said, feel free to indulge, and while you’re at it, take in some of the scenes from CFW and Flow Fashion Caribbean – two of the hottest ticket events thus far for 2017!

Happy Reading Enjoy!

FashionNotebook MALA BRYAN INTRODUCES A NEW DOLL TO THE ALREADY DIVERSE MALAVILLE WORLD

Gold Plated Necklace with Tigers Eye. Photo By: Melvern Isaac

WEAR JEWELLERY THAT HELPS! (CONFLICT WOMEN LIMITED – ASIYA MOHAMMED) In 2014 Conflict Women began the Butterfly Project, which essentially teaches survivors from domestic and sexual violence the skill of designing and creating handcrafted jewellery. Through Conflict Women’s marketing and platform, the jewellery is sold complete with the survival story of the creator. Some of the proceeds from each piece contribute to a monthly salary for this person providing her with a reasonable source of income. This wonderful idea was influenced by many factors, one of the major ones being that the founder also experienced domestic violence as a child. But with the knowledge that she’s acquired throughout her life Asiya chose to use her experiences to empower others. Since the beginning of the Butterfly Project and Asiya’s leap of faith, numerous lives of women in Trinidad have been transformed, which is the most rewarding experience for Asiya and her team. Experiencing these women firstly searching for help and then blossoming into the full bloom of their femininity and independence is what Conflict Women Limited now purely exists for.

ALICIA BURKE ROCKS STELLA MCCARTNEY’S FALL COLLECTION Rising fast, Jamaican model Alicia Burke has embarked on assignments for some of the top clients in the global fashion industry including Gucci, Versace, Ralph Lauren and Prada, to name a few. Prior to walking the runway for Caribbean Fashion Week she modeled Stella McCartney’s Fall collection, and we just can’t get enough of this all white layered embroidered tulle shift number!

It was only when Mala Bryan launched her range of Afro-Caribbean dolls, which come in array of skin tones and hair textures last year, she realised how desperately they were needed on the market for children. According to the Caribbean model: “Young black girls should love their natural hair and their dark skin and beautiful brown eyes. When one is comfortable in their own skin, there is no limit to what they can achieve. As she continues to create dolls from different cultural and ethnic backgrounds Bryan is proud to announce the latest addition to the Malaville Doll World – Alexa, the first albinism doll to join the family!

“Dominican boom could help open the door to more talent from the region.” That according to industry experts who say the rise of Caribbean models from that part of the globe will likely lead to more inclusive show casting. One such model the fashion world couldn’t get enough of this year was the DR’s Manuela Sánchez. She was spotted on runways for Dior, Saint Laurent, Louis Vuitton, and Versace, with her portfolio extending to other big names in the industry.

TEEN FASHION SUMMER CAMP LBM Designs, founded by designer Lyn Bristol hosted a Teen Fashion Summer Camp in Saint Lucia this year. Bristol's line comprises of resort- wear made using natural fabrics, paints and dyes, her efforts resulting in the creation of must have, oneof-a-kind pieces. The fashion designer is self-taught and has done costume design and production for Saint Lucia’s Carnival as well as other theatre productions. The fashion camp held in August was open to teens between the ages of 14-19, who were interested in a career in the fashion industry. From all accounts, it was a huge success!

RIHANNA LOVES CHOPARD Rihanna constantly has the public on their tippy toes trying to figure out what she’s about to do next. She recently launched her latest ‘Fenty x Puma Collection’ at Paris Fashion Week, and now the sensational Bajan star has collaborated with Chopard on a jewellery line called ‘Rihanna Loves Chopard’, launched in Cannes in May. Riri’s inspiration for her nine-piece Chopard collection derives from her home island Barbados, blending the Caribbean beaches and gardens as well as the carnival festivities together.

ISY B. THE FIRST CARIBBEAN BRAND TO LAUNCH A FASHION COLLECTION FOR U.S. HOME SHOPPING TV NETWORK ISY B. Designs is the first Caribbean brand to launch an exclusive capsule collection for Evine, the largest home shopping television network in the United States. On June 19, Designer Isy Obi, introduced her Caribbean inspired style brand, ISY B. on the home shopping television with an audience of over 80 million homes. ISY B.’s journey initiated in October 2016, after being the first Caribbean brand to be awarded with the title, ‘Emerging Lifestyle Designer of the Year’ at Phoenix Fashion Week. ISY B. was chosen from over 300 international applicants. The capsule collection for Evine comprises Isy B.’s signature effortless, feminine and playful Caribbean style and features the latest trends this season, including floral prints given uniquely tropical twists. The collection also features colours inspired by the tropics including vibrant hibiscus, sea blue aqua and cool marine tones.

RISING HAITIAN FASHION DESIGNER, AZÉDE JEAN-PIERRE The Azéde Jean-Pierre self-titled fashion line is a flawless fusion of free-spirited and sophisticated threads accompanied with closet essentials for every aspect of everyday life. Starting as an intern at Ohne Titel and Ralph Rucci, Jean-Pierre eventually launched her own fashion line in 2012. Last year, she made a debut at Paris Fashion Week with her Spring 2017 collection. Azéde honours the multicultural experience as a black immigrant in America through her clothing. “I think any barrier can be broken and being of African descent adds some value to your perspective,” she says. Her line consists of sophisticated work attire that can be worn to happy hour; dazzling strappy linen dresses for night outs and casual wear from knit pullovers to sneakers. Her bohemian sense of style is heavily influenced by her rich Haitian heritage.

KINGSTON - JAMAICA

CARIBBEAN FASHION WEEK JAMAICA The 17th edition of the most anticipated fashion event in the Caribbean unfolded in Jamaica this past June. Held at Villa Ronai (The Caribbean Fashion Village) in Stony Hill, Jamaica, the event attracted designers from the United Kingdom, the United States, Holland, Trinidad, as well as other territories in the Caribbean. Performing live on the occasion was R&B sensation Ashanti, Fuse ODG, and Dexta Daps. Famous faces stomping the catwalk included Jamaica runway star Alicia Burke, Sports Illustrated Swimsuit model Carla Campbell, Pulse double Vogue star Francine James, Jeneil Williams (who also launched her swimwear line, the Rogue Collection),

Lois Samuels (with her new ‘The Vessel’ collection), Tatjana Berg and model / actor Hector Lincoln. First on the schedule for the three-day event was the Urban Party introductory affair, followed by two days of collection showcases. Designers included Meiling, Nikki Wright, Matthew Harris (Mateo New York), Kurt Campbell, Pat Wright (Wright Style), Moncrieffe, Sandra Kennedy, Biggy and others. Worthy of mention was dancehall superstar Alkaline, who debuted his new urban wear collection! Not only were the best Caribbean designs on show, but according to organizers, “everything from the foods we eat, the holistic care of mind and body, what we wear, how we live and how we rock our style... the event focused on total fashion.” The curtains were drawn on Sunday, June 11 to much hype, and expectations are sky high for the next Caribbean Fashion Week event!

ST VINCENT & THE GRENADINES

FLOW FASHION CARIBBEAN Hosted by the Image Modeling Agency, Flow Fashion Caribbean was the place to be in March. The agency and Flow have been partners for many years, and as part of Image’s 20th Anniversary this year the premier fashion event was held at St Vincent’s Community College, which transitioned marvelously into quite the fashion capital, with a sprawling runway that featured the likes of Trinidad’s Ecliff Elie, The Cloth, and Afrofunkk, BVI’s Trefle by Kristen Frazer,

and Antigua’s Mr Henre Designs. Homegrown designers included Peta Odini, Karen DeFreitas (Soka), Rachel Bailet (ENVE), Olecia Lynch (Estilo), Chenise Hendrickson (Reine du Chic) and others. The event also saw the debut of six ‘fresh face designers’ including Elpatrena’s Designs by Elpatrena Findlay, Olive Art Designs by Christal Oliver, Tia-la-Mode by Atiah Stephens, Molly Rose by Saflana John, Moziz Made by Tyreek Isaacs, and Virtuous Designz by Owen Paul. Though the outdoor event was delayed midway due to the unpredictability of Caribbean weather, not even the rain could take away from the glittering designs that were unmistakably the sum of hard work and effort on the part the designers themselves!

Finance CHEQUING ACCOUNT WHAT IS IT: This is a transactional account that often pays little or no interest and allows you to withdraw funds in the form of cheques. PURPOSE: Day-to-day spending, income deposits, bill payments and easy withdrawal of funds. HOW TO MAXIMIZE: With the volume and frequency of activity on this account, you want to ensure that you’re retaining every dollar possible. 1. Use additional services. Many institutions offer debit cards, Online Banking and mobile apps. Use these resources to easily track your account activity and monitor your spending habits. You do not want to miss that suspicious transaction, incorrect billing or overspending. Those extra dollars and cents count! 2. Pay attention to account fees. Education and awareness give you more confidence as a money manager. Learn about all fees attached to your account. Request a copy of the details from your financial institution and read the fine print. Understand what triggers account fees e.g. overdrafts or multiple cheques.

SMART MONEY GUIDE ON

COMMON SAVING, INVESTING & CREDIT PRODUCTS An important step in long term financial growth and developing moneyconsciousness is to understand the difference between various financial vehicles. With a plethora of options and the barrage of technical terms that accompany them, it’s easy to become overwhelmed and perceive that some financial instruments are too complex to be bothered with. Here we cover the basics, debunk some myths and present ways to maximize your financial products and empower you to build a healthy financial future. By Vernette Eugene

SAVINGS ACCOUNT WHAT IT IS: One of the simplest types of accounts, a savings account allows you to store money and earn interest over time. PURPOSE: Short-term goals like a vacation or an emergency fund. HOW TO MAXIMIZE: This is the most foundational financial product you should own and your first step in making the most of your personal finances. 1. Pay yourself first and frequently. Building or expanding your store of wealth requires persistent action and a commitment to saving. Set aside as much as you can but even a small amount on a regular basis can go a long way. 2. Set up automatic transfers. Transfer funds directly to your savings. This is a handy tool that takes away the stress of remembering to save.

24 S HECAR I B B E A N . C O M / VOL 73

CREDIT CARD WHAT IS IT: A credit card allows you to borrow money to make purchases. If the full amount is not paid back within a certain timeframe (referred to as a grace period), around 19% or more interest is added to the remaining balance each period. PURPOSE: Convenience, ease and access to a wide selection of goods and services. HOW TO MAXIMIZE: Maintain excellent financial health by avoiding debilitating debt in the form of high interest loans, usually anything over 10%. 1. ALWAYS pay off your credit card in full. Be careful in treating your credit card as an easy loan. Only use if you have the funds available or expect to have them available before your grace period ends. 2. Do not withdraw cash using your card. Cash advances incur an additional fee, are often charged higher interest and are usually not allowed a grace period. 3. Pay more than the minimum. If you’ve racked up more debt on your card than you can pay within the grace period, ensure that you make as high and frequent payments as possible until it is paid off.

TERM DEPOSITS OR FIXED INCOME WHAT IT IS: Identical to a savings account in that it allows you to store money, however you can earn a higher guaranteed rate of interest over time. PURPOSE: Long term goals e.g. retirement, or short to medium term goals e.g. a car or home. HOW TO MAXIMIZE: Make your money stretch with a term deposit or fixed investment product. With a longer term focus, you can significantly improve your earning potential. 1. Review your rates regularly. This product is not a ‘set and forget’ vehicle. Monitor your rate especially as maturity nears to determine exactly how much you will earn. You want to ensure that you have the most competitive return compared to other investment products. 2. Start early. Time is the most important element for this type of product. And the more time you allow yourself, the greater the likelihood for substantial growth.

MAXIMUM SUCCESS IN BUSINESS Your business is a direct reflection and an extension of you. True or false? And before you answer that, how about this one: ninety-nine percent of us treat our businesses the same way we treat our personal lives. Both are definite truths.

T

By Carissa Daniel

his might be a hard pill to swallow but if we are truly honest with ourselves and dare to take a deeper, more intimate look, we will realize that most of the challenges we experience in business are similar to or match what we experience in our personal lives. According to, Martha Beck, “The way we do anything, is the way we do everything.” Therefore, if we are poor managers of our personal finances, then, we will be poor managers of our business finances. If we have challenges communicating with people in our personal lives, then guess what, we will have the same challenge with our clients, customers and team members. If we have a negative approach to the world in our personal lives then, yup, you’re right again, this negativity will manifest in business. Many times, we feel as though we are constantly hitting the same stumbling block in our business and we meander and struggle to move past it. And just as many times, we resort to blaming systems, structures, the economy, the government, our team members, the bank and the list goes on and on. We get even more frustrated trying to make sense of why we are stuck. Sometimes, instead of looking outwards and blaming everything and everyone else for why our business isn’t progressing, all that is required is a step back to analyze, understand and become more conscious of the situation from all

SOMETIMES, INSTEAD OF LOOKING OUTWARDS AND BLAMING EVERYTHING AND EVERYONE ELSE FOR WHY OUR BUSINESS ISN’T PROGRESSING, ALL THAT IS REQUIRED IS A STEP BACK TO ANALYZE, UNDERSTAND AND BECOME MORE CONSCIOUS OF THE SITUATION FROM ALL FRONTS, INCLUDING, WHAT MIGHT BE OCCURRING WITHIN US.

fronts, including, what might be occurring within us. In examining the challenge from this perspective, it gives us a vantage point, where we may just see the underlying issue present in our personal lives, which may then empower us to fix it there and then fix it in our business. Remember, you are the captain of your ship and if the captain isn’t effective, no matter how impressive her ship is, she will be unable to sail the ship successfully. I am one to practice what I preach. After doing some self-reflection and examining some of the challenges I was facing in my business, one area that was an obvious challenge was my finances. While my business was making money, there always seemed to be a hurdle I had to get over; whether it was “running clients down” for monies owed to me or in some cases grossly undercharging or continuously giving away my services. Upon deeper investigation, I came face to face with the source of my business’ challenge, me. It was traced back to a false belief I had regarding money that lay dormant in my mind but very active in my life. This recognition then empowered me to break free from that false belief and consciously choose to replace it with a new, more effective belief and paradigm. This discovery positively changed my life and ultimately the financial situation in my business. This deep work has undoubtedly changed the way I approach my business and the way I coach my clients. LifeBulletin Are you ill? Are you going through a mid-life crisis? Are you going to grow it out? Are you okay? It took me a few months to truly process these questions, realizing after some time, that they were posed from a place of love and concern for me. Standing in their shoes I understood. How could this fairly conservative family physician trained in traditional western medicine and with a successful practice suddenly decide to transition into being a student of integrative medicine? How could they reconcile this person who had always followed the rules of society with the one who’d suddenly decided to speak up and speak out against the deepseated problems with the existing system of healthcare delivery? The woman who had realized that she could no longer sit back and accept the status quo. As the months passed, I continued to be surprised at how much ease and freedom and joy came into my life. A last minute invitation to a party? No problem. It was so much easier to get ready. There was much joy in feeling the wind kissing the nape of my neck several times a day. My head felt lighter. My life felt lighter. I found it easier to play, and to infuse more fun into my life. I found freedom in speaking my truth; in saying what was in my heart. I started using my words as a healing tool – for myself and for others. In embracing my natural hair I found it infinitely easier to embrace a more natural way of living, a natural way of being. It felt natural to incorporate more fruit and vegetables into my diet, to exercise according to my body’s needs. I seemed to appreciate nature even more; reveling in the beauty of a full moon, or the artwork painted above me as white clouds flitted across a vividly blue sky. “A woman who cuts her hair is about to change her life”

A

- Coco Chanel

year ago, I cut my hair. Not a simple trimming of split ends, but a full on cut, aka The Big Chop. Though I had no intention of changing my life that day, my journey since then has stunned me. I was simply doing this to make my life easier, and to avoid exposure to the many chemicals that were often used to straighten my hair. At least that’s what I thought! As I embarked on my journey as a student of integrative medicine, I felt this was more in keeping with my current lifestyle. As I sat in the chair at the salon, and layers of hair fell onto the floor, I expected to feel some sadness. I’d entered the salon with shoulder-length chemically straightened hair, and would be leaving with a very short naturally curly “fro”. There was a moment of sadness, very fleeting, but most of all I felt light. I felt joyous and free. Joy that I had been brave enough to finally do this after many years of thinking about it. I knew I had been handed my freedom from regular hairdressing appointments and from the masses of chemicals that had been placed in my hair in an effort to conform it into what the societal norms were. In an effort to tame it perhaps? The reaction from my loved ones was mixed. They either really loved it or flat out hated my new look. Then the questions came.

TATJANA BERG Overcoming the Odds By Kayra Williams Photography by Alexander Wong

“Growing up as Nadine’s daughter taught me to humble myself, to know my self worth... to know that when I’m around certain people not to do certain things. It taught me that no matter how high you are you can always go down. Honestly, you just have to keep praying... because you could be at the height of your career and you can be nothing the next day.”

T

atjana Areka Berg is more than just the daughter of a super model. She’s a dreamer, filled with charm, passion, and a wisdom beyond her years. At 18, she’s overcome things a young woman should never have to experience, yet she fiercely presses on, seeking to make a name for herself in the cutthroat fashion industry. Knowing full well she has big shoes to fill, the daughter of Jamaican supermodel Nadine Willis admits she was first drawn to the industry because of her maternal predecessor, and the fact that she wanted to be just like her mom. Today, she’s more interested in being “Tatjana the model” or the actor, lawyer, or whatever it is that she decides to be on any particular day. “I want to make my own name,” she tells SHE, then answers the question of how her mother’s legacy has so far impacted her. “I have conversations with editors and magazine people, they like to say who I am, then they talk about my mom, and they end me at the bottom,” she says. “I don’t want to have people saying, ‘oh she started this because her mom did it.’” The grown up and incredibly beautiful Tatjana that the world needs to know loves sports, and the military. In our interview, she opened up about how she was nearly enlisted prior to starting her modeling career. “It’s still a plan I have for myself,” she says. “Being in the military is something I’ve always wanted to do. I went to the military camps, and one year I got a full ride to college because of my performance.” Does growing up with a famous mom equate to the inevitable diva persona? Not quite. At

least not in Tatjana’s opinion. “I have an attitude sometimes honestly,” she laughs. “But I am a very calm and loving person. I care about people a lot.” Tatjana is no longer the little girl who had her mother at her wits end during a 2005 interview with SHE Caribbean, that resulted in Nadine gracing our cover for a feature written by Rick Wayne entitled ‘From Ghetto to Gucci.’ Today, the roles are reversed and she’s the one in the spotlight. Walking down her first runway took much convincing on Tatjana’s part, as her mother always wanted to first ensure that she was ready. And when Nadine was certain that she was, “she sent me off to New York and that’s when I started.” She was 16 at the time. Tatjana remembers turbulent times growing up in Kingston, Jamaica and still today she believes that her mother’s career subtracted from the time they were able to spend together. Much like her mother had experienced herself growing up, Tatjana reflected on a mostly unsettled childhood where she would stay with friends and family while Nadine jetted off for shows, photoshoots, and other contracted gigs. “It had a very bad impact on me and my mom’s relationship when I moved back in with her because we didn’t have that connection,” she shares. “There were a lot of things she wasn’t there for… when I started riding a bike, when I learned how to swim… it took away from some of those things. When I moved in with her she got pregnant and had my little sister Zein, which made me very jealous, so I had to deal with that growing up.” Almost overnight it seemed, she had gone from only child to older sister. To young Tatjana, the change appeared to have created

BodyShop WHY DID YOU GET INTO THIS FIELD OF BUSINESS? Andrea: I started with therapeutic massage in 1998 at the National Holistic Institute, Emeryville, California, after completing my Bachelors of Science in Biology at the University of the West Indies, Cave Hill, Barbados. I have had a strong scientific influence from both of my parents who are in the medical field, which led to a natural progression in health studies. Being more creative in nature, I wanted to pursue a healing modality that would feed my interests in both the holistic and creative arts. Massage therapy seemed to be an excellent platform to start with since it required a thorough underpinning knowledge in the health sciences. Within a short time-frame, I progressed to Yoga, and gradually added more skills to my trade through continuing education courses and workshops, both local and abroad.

TRANSFORMING THE STEREOTYPE THROUGH HOLISTIC HEALING By Esther Austin

A

ndrea De Souza is a holistic practitioner with her own sanctuary in the island of Barbados. When we met for the first time, Andrea was organising her inaugural Moonlight Bazaar which is now held as a monthly event on full moon Saturdays to promote holistic health and wellbeing. As we reflected on the similarities of our craft, I got Andrea to share more about her work as a holistic practitioner: WHAT IS YOUR DEFINITION OF HOLISTIC? Andrea: Holistic is a way of life, encompassing everything about your entire being and the environment around you. It opens your consciousness to a universal way of living, where everything becomes more connected. When you live holistically, you recognise the interconnectedness of all life. WHAT MODALITIES DO YOU OFFER AND WHY DID YOU CHOOSE THESE? Andrea: I currently manage and operate from Ajna Holistic Sanctuary, Upton, St. Michael, Barbados where I offer a wide range of therapeutic and rehabilitative massage services that range from gentle relaxation therapy and pre-natal massage to chronic pain management and injury rehabilitation bodywork. I incorporate both Eastern and Western philosophies in my work and use a very integrative approach with my clients. My other interests and services fall into a more spiritual category, where I offer personal readings, energy clearing, as well as chakra readings and balancing.

34 S HECAR I B B E A N . C O M / VOL 73

WOULD YOU DESCRIBE WHAT YOU DO AS UNORTHODOX? Andrea: In some ways, yes, it can be seen as unorthodox, simply because I use tools that are outside of the norm. For instance, tapping into my higher consciousness to perform oracle or pendulum readings is not something that you see every day in this society. Education is key in changing the perception that the root of this work is evil. All the underlying principles can be found in basic universal tenets that are used in Chemistry and Physics. Once people recognise that everything in the universe is simply energy in different forms, it becomes much easier to accept and digest. CAN YOU SHARE A PERSONAL EXPERIENCE OF YOU PERSONALLY USING OR RECEIVING A HOLISTIC THERAPY? Andrea: I use holistic therapies on a regular basis, in the form of physical application such as yoga and massage bodywork, as well as on a more spiritual level with mediation, dreaming, crystals and other ritual work. There is a marked difference in my attitude and relationships with others when I’m focused on my spiritual path. It puts me in a more receptive mode and I feel better able to handle life’s challenges. HOW WOULD YOU SAY SUCH TREATMENTS SUPPORT OR HELP PEOPLE? Andrea: Everyone handles challenges differently and it is up to the individual to acknowledge their strengths and weaknesses. For some, just having compassionate, human touch is enough to bring their mind and body at ease, while others seek external validation for what they intuitively know to be true. We all want to feel supported on some level, and as a holistic practitioner there are a myriad of ways that I can accomplish that goal with my clients. All that is required is an open heart and an open mind to allow the healing to begin. For more information visit: www.ajnasanctuary.com.

D.I.Y. NATURAL HAIR PERFUME

Want your hair to smell luscious with minimal effort? We’ve got just the fix: home-made hair perfume! To begin, find and select your preferred choice of essential oil, or even a combination. Grab some rose water, and you’re ready to go!

GET THAT

GLOW

Our skin glows when our bodies are both externally and internally healthy. With a little bit of work, and love for self, you too can be on your way to beautiful, radiant skin!

Ingredients: 2 oz. spray bottle 1.75 oz. filtered water or rose water 1 tsp. aloe vera gel, jojoba oil or argan oil 10+ drops of preferred essential oil blend Preparation: 1. In a bowl combine essential oils with aloe vera (if desired) 2. Mix thoroughly until an emulsion is formed 3. Add water (or rose water) to the mixture. Put a lid over and shake well until combined. 4. Use a fennel to pour the combination into a (glass) spray bottle. 5. Shake thoroughly to ensure everything is mixed well Shake before each use. Spray onto wet or dry hair and then thoroughly brush through. Caution: Some essential oils are stronger than others so you may want to start off by adding a few drops at a time. Added benefits: The oils and rose water will add some life to your strands by softening, moisturising, and protecting it from harmful UV rays.

EX-FOLIATE: Repeat after us: ex-foliation is key. Ex-foliation removes the dead skin cells that form on the top layer of the skin as well as cleanses the pores and minimises acne. Find a facial scrub that works for you, or use natural ingredients to make your own.

HIGHLIGHTER: Don’t have the natural glow? Then shine like a pro! Highlighters come in so many different forms including powder, cream and liquid. Find one that works with your skin and shine bright!

OIL PULLING: DOES IT WORK?

COCONUT OIL: Coconut oil is great for keeping your skin soft, supple, healthy and glowing! You can either include coconut oil into your diet, or apply it topically. You can even substitute your face wash with coconut oil by simply massaging a small amount into your skin for four minutes, then covering your face with a damp wash cloth for 15 minutes.

FACE MISTS: Mists can be sprayed at any time throughout the day; they tend to keep the face hydrated and glowing. Rose water is the preferred choice for most, although variations include green tea placed into a spray bottle!

DETOX: Detoxing is a great way to keep your skin healthy. To cleanse your stomach, start your mornings by drinking a warm cup of water with a slice of lemon. There are a number of other detox waters you can make, and your skin will be sure to thank you!

ICE: Rubbing ice on your face increases blood flow to the area promoting an instant glow (think Alicia Keys!). It also tightens pores and helps get rid of acne over time. To reap more benefits you can make ice cubes out of green tea.

Did you know that oil pulling – the traditional practice of swishing oils around in your mouth for detoxing and other purposes – can be extremely beneficial for improving oral and systemic health? Holistic experts say it can help improve various conditions like asthma, as well as alleviate headaches and migraines, and even inflammation. Over time, this method can help you achieve clearer skin, by way of detoxifying your body. It’s also said to be great for maintaining optimal dental health, and overall, boosting the immune system. The oils most commonly used in this practice are sesame, coconut, or extra virgin olive oil. If by now you’re curious, here’s how it works: * This technique should be done first thing in the morning, before breakfast and brushing your teeth. Expert tip: Try not to apply too much pressure otherwise your mouth will be sore. • Pour one tbsp. of oil into your mouth • Swish around for at least 10-20 minutes (the more practice you get the longer you can go!) • After a few minutes the oil will begin to feel watery as it gets diluted with saliva. But, push through, it’ll be worth it! • Move the oil into your mouth using your jaw muscles and tongue. • When the oil turns whitish, milkier and thinner, spit it out – do not swallow. • The change in consistency is an indication that all the toxins have been pulled out. • After oil pulling rinse your mouth out with warm water, salt water or mouth wash. • Aim to do this technique every morning!

ad weather – Even with just two seasons in the Caribbean, experience would have taught you by now that the rain isn’t always your friend. Particularly when you have something important to do… like get married. If you’ve opted for an outdoor ceremony, this can be a real buzz kill. Rule number one; always have a plan B. Book a secondary wet weather option, or if that’s not possible, ensure that your outdoor venue can transition effectively so your guests can be comfortable.

LATENESS – Caribbean time is a real thing,

especially at the most crucial moments. Whether it’s your celebrant, the bride, groom or guests, it’s your wedding and you want things to flow in a solid and structured manner. One way to ensure everyone arrives on time is to invite them one hour early, keep them entertained with a few light drinks beforehand, and with that you’ll be on your way to a smooth proceeding!

LOST ITEMS – Rings? Marriage license?

Copies of vows or readings? Candles and other décor? The list is endless, but these are among the most important items that are likely to get lost or left behind, so ensure you place these in safe keeping, and that the person you leave responsible for these items knows how vital they are to your big day!

What can go wrong probably will. Particularly when you’re embarking on an undertaking that can very well set the tone for the rest of your life with the one you love! The inevitability of Murphy’s law is all the more reason to step into your big day fully prepared. Perfect planning (including back ups!) makes for a flawless execution. With that said, we’re here to share with you some of the most common mishaps on the big day, and how to avoid them!

BAD PHOTOGRAPHY – There are so

many things that can go wrong in that regard, but one of the worst stems from not setting enough time for photography. If you don’t schedule it, chances are it’s either not going to happen, or your photographer is going to have to rush your portrait photos. Ensure you either get this done in advance, or work with your photographer to get photos taken at a set time during the day. Also, when it comes to getting the best photography, opt for someone who’s not only talented, but who’s easy to work with. Wedding photography should never add stress to your day.

EVERYTHING UNDER THE SUN! – Unpredictable children, crying babies, last minute illnesses, heartbroken help... These are among the realities of things you really can’t control. Sometimes, the best you can do is really all you can do. Plan, prepare, and watch things fall into place. And try to relax while you’re at it! You’re only getting married to the love of your life, and it is absolutely going to be the best day ever, no matter what!

CONSIDER THIS BEFORE HAVING AN OUTDOOR WEDDING

OUTDOOR BLUES Usually you like adventure and the outdoors. Today, with gray clouds looming overhead, you’re not so sure. Outdoor weddings are as unforgettable as they are unpredictable. If you’re looking to take your love, and your wedding party outdoors, there are a few things you need to keep in mind.

Be prepared for all kinds of weather and

PARKING WOES – Yup, this is a real

thing. On your wedding day you can be stressed out by something as simple as your rental venue either not having enough parking accommodation for all your guests, or the venue simply not wanting parking on their property. Sort out the logistics of parking with the venue well in advance, that way you know whether you need to organize a shuttle from a separate area to take guests to and from the location throughout the proceedings.

keep umbrellas nearby. Expect anything, including power outages! Keep a technician on hand. Wardrobe malfunctions from hell. Try to be creative enough to plan ahead to avoid this, or be prepared if it does happen. DIY projects gone wrong. Sometimes its worth saving yourself the hassle and embarrassment and getting a professional! Unexpected guests – its harder to keep track of people outdoors, but try not to be a bridezilla if this happens. Leave a few seats open for eventualities.

WEDDING THEMES YOU PROBABLY HAVEN’T CONSIDERED International wedding designer and planner Wendy Lee of Asian Fusion Weddings has advice for couples looking to host a themed wedding: “The key for designing any celebration is to maintain the colour scheme, use a variety of textures and remember what the purpose of the event is all about.” Under the brand Asian Fusion Weddings, she comes up with phenomenal wedding concepts, some of which are remarkably simple to execute. So whether you’re planning a destination wedding, or one right here in the islands, here are some pro tips from Wendy to get you going!

TIPS TO KEEP IN MIND? WENDY: When you showcase East Asian elements, then its best to carry it through from beginning to end. Ensure that everything is coordinated to the very last detail; from the stationery elements, through to the culinary offerings and finally to all the decorative tabletop enhancements.

THE BREAK DOWN THEME:

ASIAN FUSION TRADITIONAL Chinese New Year is always celebrated with friends and family at home, and eating together is part of the 15-day celebrations. Thinking about all those Lunar New Year family dinners over the years, I was ultimately inspired by two of the most popular Chinese porcelain patterns that my grandmother had in my childhood. One design features the traditional rich reds and gold colour palette. It was inspired by the vintage Chinese Mun Shou Longevity porcelain pattern. Red represents happiness and joy. Therefore, red is traditionally used in all Chinese celebrations from weddings, birthdays, anniversaries and so forth.

THEME:

ASIAN FUSION MODERN WENDY: This design features more of a muted modern palette; using various tones of pinks and blues. The Ching Tung blue and white porcelain pattern was the inspiration and its beauty has also captivated the hearts of those in the West for many generations. The French call it “blanc de Chine” and it’s actually quite on trend again. There are various blue and white porcelain patterns which lend themselves to a Chinoiserie feel in design and decor right now. The various pieces of the floral and decor in this concept can be easily reinterpreted for a bridal shower, baby shower and/or even a water colour or pastel colour themed wedding.

THE VARIOUS PIECES OF THE FLORAL AND DECOR IN THIS CONCEPT CAN BE EASILY REINTERPRETED FOR A BRIDAL SHOWER, BABY SHOWER AND/OR EVEN A WATER COLOUR OR PASTEL COLOUR THEMED WEDDING.

CANADIANA WHAT MAKES THIS THEME STAND OUT? WENDY: The cultural heritage representation and symbolism makes the Canadiana theme unique. It is designed to feel like an understated relaxed formal affair. However, we still wanted to showcase an elegantly refined one. The goal was to showcase a design that could be easily replicable by any general audience. This style although set for a wedding, could be easily transferred for an anniversary party or a cottage type celebration.

HOW CAN ONE TRANSLATE THIS INTO OTHER CULTURAL THEMES? WENDY: If one doesn’t want their wedding to be like a traditional Canada Day celebration, then adding in other colours like black and metallic silver will provoke a more formal feel. Pairing colours, textures and patterns that work effortlessly and seamlessly together are an essential component to this overall design.

THEME:

SOUTH ASIAN AND EAST ASIAN COMBO WHAT DID YOU LOVE ABOUT PUTTING TOGETHER THIS PARTICULAR THEME? WENDY: Blending and reinterpreting cultural elements is a wonderful way couples can showcase both backgrounds. My goal as a wedding planner and event designer is to help transform what is “his and hers”, to become theirs.

TIPS FOR EXECUTION? WENDY: Repetition and being mindful that there needs to be a perfect balance between the various elements are truly what makes a look cohesive. My design philosophy is that everything should work in harmony with each other, and not the opposite.

WHAT IS THE ONE KEY PIECE OF ADVICE THAT YOU CAN OFFER TO COUPLES LOOKING TO DESIGN THEIR OWN EVENT? WENDY: My continuous inspiration is derived from my clients’ cultural backgrounds, their individual tastes and impeccable styles. Hence the company name “Asian Fusion Weddings”. It brings me great joy to be able to infuse their wishes into one creatively detailed and cohesive design; whether it be a gathering at home, an intimate affair and/or an extravagant wedding. WeddingGuide [What’s in Fashion] WEDDING

TRENDS

Wedding trends are forever evolving. This year, many couples have found themselves turning away from the traditional, and gravitating to the modern, minimalistic and glamorous!

1. METALLIC DRESSES + BREEZY SILHOUETTES Say goodbye to all white weddings. Well, not completely, but this year metallic looks are all the range. Gold threading, silver beading, and breezy silhouettes will be gliding down the aisles this wedding season!

2. COLOUR COMEBACK Bright and bold pastels are trending, and so are neutrals! The pairing of the two makes for a beautiful contrast, even on camera! So, taking courageous steps in mixing colours you don’t usually see together gives weddings this year an edgy, bohemian ambience guests will adore!

3. HAPPY EVER AFTER GETAWAY

Consider surprising your guests with an unexpected grand exit in a horse drawn carriage, motorcycle, old-time convertible, or even a helicopter. The possibilities are endless. You can even incorporate your own personal spin to make an awe-inspiring, memorable entrance – either way; it will be just as perfect.

44 S HECAR I B B E A N . C O M / VOL 73

4. TRANSLUCENT WEDDING CAKES

That’s right – translucent cakes (no frosting on the sides) are making a hit this season. These cakes are generally iced with buttercream and these luscious delights are decorated with flowers and in-season fruits that bring out the flavours of the cake’s filling!

5. RULES… WHAT RULES?

Wedding ceremony rules have gotten the ultimate remix. While some traditions will always remain prominent, others have taken the boot for some couples. In fact, some couples now opt for serving cocktails before saying “I do”. And to that we say, why not start things off with a bang and celebratory sip? Your guests are bound to love it!

6. ENTERTAINMENT

7. IMAGE MAPPING

8. FURRY FRIENDS

Live entertainment is becoming even more popular. Surprise your guests with a performance they won’t forget about anytime soon! Think outside the box to woo your crowd by bringing in aerialists, acrobats, or stand out musicians who complement your wedding theme.

3D projecting mapping will soon be a wedding norm. Image mapping allows you to transform any space, even your cake, into an intergalactic galaxy, or pretty much anything you desire with lighting and moving pictures. That means you can save some bucks on your wedding theme, while still adding some excitement and fun to the ceremony.

We’ve seen adorable puppies take over the ring bearer’s role on social media, but four-legged furry friends will be playing an even bigger role in this season nuptials; from donkeys and llamas, to bunnies and pigs. Hey, animals got love to give too!

9. FOOD ON THE GO

10. STYLISH SWINGS

This counts as good news if you have a tight budget. Traditional formal dinners are becoming so last year, and besides, what better way to spice up the dinner arrangements than having food trucks, family style meals, or even fun food stations?

Stylish swings are the new lounge chairs. Add a couple of these and it’s guaranteed to be a huge hit for wedding guests young or old. Not only that, it’s a fantastic way to stay in motion when taking a break from the dance floor. Another option is ‘Queen’ and ‘King’ chairs at a sweetheart table.

#SQUADGOALS … WEDDING EDITION You’re getting married. Congratulations! In case you didn’t already know, it’s your special day, and it’s all about you. You have to get your hair, nails, makeup, dress, shoes and your bridal party just right. Yes, your bridal party is very important. This is the group that is traditionally supposed to help you plan and keep you sane on the big day! Too many brides neglect the needs of their bridal party and this may make this group feel less than special.

Ballet and love letter by Anastasia

In my experience bridal party makeup is often left as a second thought. Most brides give lots of time and effort to their own makeup look and leave the look of the bridal party up in the air. This is big mistake as the wedding day is largely an aesthetic production. The bridal party makeup should as such be a complimentary aesthetic. In photos and interactions all the faces should be one harmony, and not a number of discordant chords. It has been my experience that the majority of brides play it safe opting for classic and neutral looks. There is hardly a creative flair in accomplishing the perfect look for the bride. Enter the bridal party as your perfect canvas to get creative and add a bit of color and flair. Utilize the current makeup trends on the faces of your bridal squad to bring your overall wedding look up a notch.

2017 is going very ladylike and demure with shades of pretty pinks. Most brides will run very far away from color on their lids. This is where the bridal party comes in. Make the faces that surround you a beautiful array of soft color. For fairer complexions pastel shades are great. For tan to deep complexions a deeper rose to berry tone will work.

LIPS

The bride has to be very aware of their lip product choice. It has to be kissable, wearable and long lasting. Thus the 2017 trend of berry lips may not be desirous. It would be perfect on the bridal party however since they can give that extra oomph and sophistication in group photos.

46 S HECAR I B B E A N . C O M / VOL 73

BROWS

As we have been seeing all year, the brow is very natural and soft. This look is great from bride to bridal party. Communicate this to your girls and advise them to start growing out any over groomed harsh brows.

FACE

It’s all about the glow. Subtlety comes into play with the bride with soft glowing highlighter. When it comes to the bridal party consider asking your makeup artist for a more impactful look by layering highlighters for more depth or using cream highlighters for more pop.

CALYPSO GLOW

By Patricia Bentham

Body oils from Calypso Glow not only make your skin feel velvet soft, but leave your body with the blissful scent of the tropics. It can be used every day, or as a treat because regardless of its oily foundation, it is not greasy, simply moisturizing. Illuminating scrubs and polishes from this line gently exfoliate, again with the favourable fragrances of coconut and lime with the promise of skin with a glowing finish. Then there’s the Coconut Water Nourishing Body Wash Milk, which is an overachiever of the skin. It cleanses thoroughly without any harsh products (so do Calypso Glow’s body bars), while nourishing skin and promoting an even skin tone.

WeddingGuide [Hair] CURLS VS FRIZZ

SHOW YOUR HAIR SOME LOVE!

Naturally curly hair can be challenging; strands separate easily due to the inconsistencies of the varied textures it occupies. Unless controlled, this can cause split ends. The constant use of hot irons is not a great idea in the hotter months, although there are wonderful heat protection products and daily leave in conditioners on the market, which are excellent to maintain your hair.

With warmer temperatures comes sun kissed skin, a playful easy wardrobe and the need to rock trendy yet practical hair dos. The functionality of trendy braids, twists, and short sculptured coifs all enter a new zone. Even more so in wedding season. As all hair types compete for the convenience of instant gratification hairstyles, it's just as important to find styles to protect your strands. Here are some helpful tips to keep in mind when your hairs wants to swan off into its own direction!

BEAT THE HEAT

Soaring temperatures can challenge even the most flattering hair textures. Hot weather sometimes dries out hair easily requiring more moisture to tame unruly and flyaway strands. So essentially, this is where protective styling comes in. There's no better way to seal moisture into your hair with minimal daily maintenance. However, your hair’s response to the elements will largely depend on a number of factors. Chemicals in the hair such as relaxers, color and texturizer can all have a significant impact.

48 S HECAR I B B E A N . C O M / VOL 73

FULL STEAM AHEAD Steam treatments are amazing for your hair no matter the season. Think of it as a therapeutic sauna for your stands. The vapor allows the cuticle layer of your hair to soften and open up to allow an infusion of conditioning treatment to get in. This is a wonderful way to seal the cuticle, which in turn makes the hair more robust against atmospheric abuse.

SOMETHING OLD SCHOOL Traditional cornrows are trending, and there’s no better time to rock them than in the hotter months. This simple plaiting technique took center stage this summer, often augmented with large, imposing sectioning.

TWIST AND ROCK

There are a variety of styles to choose from when it comes to finding something breathtaking, yet hassle free, whether you decide to sport goddess faux locs like Willow Smith and Ciara, carefully twisted bantu knots, short graduated bobs or cropped natural shave haircuts.

HAIR PRODUCTS

Okay, okay. So we heard about some people relying on relaxer to lay their edges, and felt the need to intervene. For those women who’ve chosen to ride the natural wave, we know the last thing you want to do is go back to using harsh chemicals for the sake of keeping your edges down. And yes, to some people, this matters. Here are the best products to get the job done!

CANTU EXTRA HOLD STAY GEL works wonders, just brush into place and you’re good to go. Again, use the wrap technique for best results with edge control products.

NEW PRODUCT WE LOVE THE NEVER FAIL HOLY GRAIL

CRÈME OF NATURE’S EDGE CONTROL and a soft toothbrush go a long way. Depending on your hair texture, you may need to reapply once or twice during the day.

Try using a satin scarf and a holding product like ORGANIC ROOT

wrap, and take the scarf off when you’re ready to go.

The lightweight gel protects hair from damage caused by heat. It’s great for repairing heat damaged hair and increasing moisture! Available at www.fantasiahaircare.com.

Reader comment: “I love ECO Styler (Olive Oil) for slicking down my hair, but I always combine it with another product otherwise my hair will curl right back up. My method is layering the ECO Styler first, using Hicks or Design Essentials edge control on top, then setting it with a scarf. This way I get the best hold, with no flaking. It just goes to show how different everyone’s hair is!” - Lexie

SATIN PILLOWCASES

COCONUT OIL

You’re not ready to love your hair if you don’t own a few of these!

It’s no secret, it works for just about everything.

DETANGLER There’s no getting around it, so why not get those knots out as gently, and painlessly as possible?

SILK OR SATIN SCARF / BONNET Add one of these to your nighttime ritual to save yourself the hassle of messy, tangled hair in the morning.

SHAMPOO, DEEP CONDITIONER AND MOISTURIZER Get ready for your strands to love you just a little bit more.

HAIR PINS / BOBBY PINS These are as handy as they are hard to keep track of. Be sure to stock up!

SAYING ‘I DO’ IN 32

Choosing a wedding location that captures the significance of the occasion is one of the most important decisions a couple can make. Whether saying your vows against the stunning backdrop of the open ocean, or under an arching canopy of trees amidst the flora in a garden wedding, the perfect setting will bring the ceremony to life. With its kaleidoscope of colourful and exciting destinations, St.Vincent & the Grenadines is the ideal place for an idyllic wedding.

BEACH BRIDES

The fresh sea breeze, the warm sun playing off the water, the promise of a happy tomorrow symbolized in the distant horizon – no experience comes close to a coastal wedding. Blessed with some of the most beautiful beaches in the world, SVG has a host of seaside/beach spots for that special ceremony.

BEQUIA Translated from “island in the clouds” in Arawak, Bequia is SVG’s second largest island and a thriving destination for yachting, diving and of course, beach weddings. Say “I do” against a backdrop of white sails and wheeling white birds. Whether at Friendship Bay near the island capital of Port Elizabeth, or on one of its more secluded spots like Princess Margaret Beach, Spring Bay or Industry Bay, Bequia offers an array of choices. CANOUAN This tiny island jewel contains beauty far beyond its size. At less than four miles in length, Canouan is nevertheless home to two world-class resort hotels, with a third on the way, which provide the fullest amenities for weddings. UNION ISLAND One of SVG’s most welcoming islands, Union Island is a well-loved destination for guests from around the world. And while visitors enjoy the hotels, guesthouses, tours, restaurants, markets and boutiques, marriage-minded folk will be thrilled by its exquisite beaches. MAYREAU Intimacy is the essence of this island. The smallest of the Grenadines with a population of only 300, Mayreau is a cozy place, the home of warm and welcoming fisher folk with strong ties to the land and sea. With brilliant white sand and clear water, the island’s beaches are ranked among the world’s best.

RESORT WEDDINGS

GARDEN OF LOVE:

Nestled on the island of St Vincent just minutes away from the capital of Kingstown, SVG’s Botanic Gardens is a serene haven. Renowned as one of the most beautiful sites in the Eastern Caribbean, these 20 acres of lush greenery and vibrant plant life is more than an historic landmark of immense significance. With its manicured lawns and potent atmosphere, this island Eden is a premier wedding location.

For visitors with weddings in mind, resorts offer some of the most complete packages with the least fuss from the event experts themselves. Although a comprehensive list of outstanding wedding resorts is too large for one article, we have several favourites. BEQUIA BEACH HOTEL – Situated on Bequia’s glorious Friendship Beach, this luxurious hotel has the location, facilities, amenities and service for the perfect wedding. Spacious ocean and beachfront rooms, private villas, two swimming pools and even private beach space offer the ideal experience for before and after the ceremony.

Located just off St Vincent, its lush vegetation and exquisite ocean views exude romantic passion, energy that has made it a prime destination for weddings for people all over the world. The entire island can be rented.

If you’re planning a church wedding, historic venues like the Kingstown Methodist Church and St Mary’s Cathedral of the Assumption may be perfect for your island wedding. In its understated simplicity, the tropical dwelling with its eighteen-guest rooms is perfect for unwinding, making it a good choice for couples seeking romance. Even better, Grenadine House offers wedding and honeymoon packages that accommodate almost any budget. One may well ask, what makes Grenadine House so special? Well, its location on a hilly vantage just above the capital makes for a splendid view, amid quiet ambiance. Within walking distance are the Botanical Gardens and a local museum. It’s also a five-minute drive away from the colonel-era Fort Charlotte! Notably, Grenadine House is the only boutique hotel in Kingstown with a spa, gym, pool and full restaurant and bar open for breakfast, lunch and dinner daily. Guests receive complimentary continental breakfast each morning and a cocktail on arrival. “It’s the perfect honeymoon getaway due to the romantic ambience it carries,” Laela Constantine, Grenadine House's General Manager told SHE. “Couples can enjoy a stunning Caribbean sunset on the Terrace, then an amorous candle-lit dinner.” Grenadine House, formerly known, as ‘The Great House’ is a historical site, built in 1765. PETA

ODINA

Anything worth doing is worth doing well, and nobody knows that better than Vincentian designer Peta Odini. By Lindsay Anderson

WHY DID YOU DECIDE TO GET INTO THE WORLD OF FASHION DESIGN? I always had an interest in design and creating. I honestly didn’t think of it as my first option of study, but after doing many other things I found myself wanting to do formal studies in design and so when I was able to, I did. WHAT DO YOU LOVE ABOUT IT? I love fabrics; everything for me begins with the fabric. I love being able to do textile manipulations or embellishment, which doesn’t happen often but when it does it’s my favorite thing. I also enjoy seeing fabric going from a two dimensional element into a three dimensional piece of clothing. WHAT MAKES YOUR DESIGNS STAND OUT? I think it’s my fabric and silhouette choices. I’d be the first to admit that my work is not overly fancy, I like clean minimal silhouettes but I also love really loud, over the top and unusual fabrics, which I think has helped set the brand apart a bit.

60 S HECAR I B B E A N . C O M / VOL 73

Tell us about your educational background in fashion? I did my Fashion Foundation at London College of Fashion and my BA (Hons) Fashion with a specialism in Menswear at Ravensbourne, also in London. I have also interned with Claudia Pegus in Trinidad, as well as Peter Jensen while I was in London. What is the hardest part of designing? The hardest part is trying to develop something new that makes sense for your market, is cost effective but still speaks to your brand. Especially in our market; if you’re not careful you end up making things to suit individuals and you are left with a brand with no clear identity or voice. I try my best to avoid that possibility. Have you ever felt like giving up, and what kept you going? A lot, because the market in the Caribbean is really small and the price point at which my work should be at is considered luxury market level. We also don’t have an established luxury market for Caribbean designers. Many people will pay double or triple for the international brands but will complain that the products which are developed in the islands are too expensive, which is unfortunate. What keeps you going? Probably that I really don’t want to ever have to work a desk job again!

ARE FRIENDS AND FAMILY SUPPORTIVE? My mother is supportive of my work. She likes the fact that I have decided to build something of my own, but she also sees how frustrating it is when you put in a lot of work but there isn’t much financial remuneration for the effort. WHAT’S IT LIKE BEING A DESIGNER FROM A SMALL ISLAND? The market is hard; there aren’t many opportunities for financing for designers and when there are grants available for small businesses sometimes the requirements for application are really not catered to a business that can be at times really unpredictable, and oftentimes, run by one person. Additionally, resources are very limited. Raw materials are scarce and expensive. The infrastructure for e-commerce doesn’t readily exist and even getting your products from your island to other islands or internationally can be expensive. Sometimes it takes so long that it deters persons from purchasing. HOW HAVE YOU MANAGED TO RISE ABOVE THE CHALLENGES? I haven’t. I think everything is very “work in progress”. There are many things that may not be overcome because they are beyond my level to change them, so I’m now challenged with finding creative solutions to make my situation work as best as possible. Will I ever get things exactly where I need them to be? Probably not, but for now I am trying my best to keep my head above water.

Germaine Waters Many people ask how Sun Temple Food came about. Simple. I experienced a renaissance. I wanted to finally invoke the desire I’d had for years to truly find a way to create food using the rich resources available in the Caribbean and to trust my own instincts and knowledge rather than someone else’s to feed my body and soul. The result is the harnessing and documenting of a growth process, which I feel honoured to share.

PESTO CHICKEN | EASY MID-WEEK CREAMY PESTO CHICKEN RECIPE SERVES 6 This is so easy that once you have all the ingredients, it is literally a 10 minute preparation job with 45 minutes in the oven. Perfect for a mid week supper but don’t be fooled as it is so yummy, this pesto chicken could pass for a dinner party dish. In fact, I made this for our friends David and Tracey the other week and Tracey is very keen for the Creamy Pesto Chicken recipe, so here you go Tracey; this recipe is one that came like a gift. I literally took as my inspiration “Chicken Charlton” and filled in the blanks with what I had in the fridge. My girls absolutely love this and ask for it often. You could also use different sorts of pesto, such as water cress pesto or coriander pesto.

• “Butterfly” each chicken breast with a sharp knife like in the photo above. This is so they lie flatter in the casserole dish and so the cooking is more even. Looks like a heart doesn’t it? • Mix all the goat cheese thoroughly with all the pesto and the garlic clove. • Put a small amount of olive oil on the base of the dish and lay 3 of the chicken breasts covering the base as evenly as possible. • Spread all the goat cheese/pesto mixture onto the chicken breasts and season with some salt and pepper. • Now... you can be really cheeky and add an extra layer of mozzarella here in which case you need to use the double amount. I’ve done it both with and without and both are good. Its just with the extra layer of mozzarella, it's a bit richer. • Layer on the remaining 3 butterflied chicken breasts and cover with the remaining mozzarella. • Cook uncovered in a 180ºC (350ºF) oven for 45 mins to an hour. PRICE How much are you willing to spend for that antique armoire? Have you budgeted enough for that sofa? Is there a more economical option available that will serve you just as well? Do you need to save up just a bit more so you can make this purchase comfortably? Once you’ve answered the above, you’ll know for certain whether you need to take that item home with you right away.

FURNITURE SHOPPING:

DON’T GET CARRIED AWAY! Admit it; home and gardening stores are to women what toy stores are to kids. We can spend just as much time in there, and are almost as likely to throw tantrums if we can’t get what we want. Or even worse, if we want everything we see! It is essential before heading out on a home shopping spree to know exactly what you want, lest you get home with a bunch of things you don’t need. The process of sifting is never easy, but absolutely necessary. Before pulling out your purse, here are some things you may need to consider.

OVERALL LOOK AND FEEL What value is this piece of furniture going to add to your home? How does it make you feel? It’s important that whatever you’ve investing in to be a permanent fixture in your living space contribute positively to your lifestyle.

COMPROMISE PATTERN Colours and textures matter. You’re going to want that new find to blend in with your existing space and the furniture you already have. Unless you’re starting from a blank slate, you’re going to need some points of reference before moving any further.

If you live alone, buy whatever you like and can afford. If you’re sharing a home with your spouse and / or family, then you’re going to need to consider the needs of the other people involved. Ask for input and suggestions, so everyone can feel like they’re part of the process.

FURNITURE SHOPPING TIPS FOR NEWLY WEDS

SPACE Size matters. As much as you love that oversized waterbed, does it really fit into the bedroom scheme you and your hussy had in mind? And really, how would you even get it through the door? If you’re able to get past size and other possible constraints, and it is without a doubt what you need to have in your life at this very moment, go for it.

1. To avoid disagreements, ensure you both have a reasonable idea of prices, and what you’re looking for ahead of time. Again, compromise is key. 2. Lessen your expectations of what you’re really going to find unless you’ve called ahead of time, and know exactly where you’re going to find that vintage coffee table. 3. Measurements are important. Save everyone’s time and get this done before setting out. 4. Furniture shopping can be tedious. Try to make the trip as fun and free of pressure as possible. You’re embarking on a new life together; you don’t have to get everything all at once. 5. Sometimes you’re just better off flipping through a catalogue!
