AFRICANÂ DRUMMING WITH ANITA MACBETH & SHEILA ALEXANDER
Campers had fun learning the history and art of African dance and drumming with instructors Sista Anita Macbeth and Sista Sheila Alexander. Sista Anita taught our young ladies traditional African based dances sinte and kuku popular in Guinea, West Africa. Sista Sheila taught Mya Joseph, Malaya Thomas, Nylah Thomas and Kalea Walters from Rites of Passage Media Arts Camp to drum kuku and sinte rhythms for YES campers to dance. They learned the importance of how drumming calls people to action for celebratory events, and family gatherings.

WITH MISS PASSION WARD
Our young ladies in Rites of Passage Media Arts Camp learned the art of photography under the guidance of Passion Ward. From composition, lighting, lens, angles and aperture, they enjoyed capturing their peer's portrait for theme: I am because we are. They learned how share their visual narratives through photography. See their portaits online here. The photography in this e-zine is primarily by Passion Ward.
RITES OF PASSAGE MEDIA ARTS CAMP
Young ladies from Rites of Passage Media Arts Camp enjoyed enhancing their literacy and reading comprehension through literary arts enrichment through theater workshops with Miss Shedia Nelson’s published play “She Kept Her Bra On: Stories of Empowerment, Self-Discovery and Acceptance”. The play is part of a four part series available on Apple Books based on the philosophy of a good bra that provides guidance, direction, support and lift like a good friend. So when you find the right bra like a good friend, you got to hold onto them. Miss Arsimmer McCoy directed a poem, an excerpt from volume 2 of the play series to prepare them to perform at our end of camp show. In addition to their literary and social emotional development, they learned the value of self care from Nicole Russell's book "Everything a Band-Aid Can't Fix" and the importance creating a legacy with Institute of Contemporary Art. They enjoyed fitness through hip hop dancing with Team Ohhh and social emotional intelligence through music with Andres Diaz.

THEATRE WITH MISS ARSIMMER MCCOY Campers are learning the art of theatrical performance, acting, stage etiquette, improv, original story development, directing and stage production with Miss Arsimmer McCoy. This summer's theater selection is a spoken word piece, an exerpt from play "She Kept Her Bra On: Stories of Empowerment, Self-Discovery and Acceptance" written by Shedia Nelson published on Apple Books.
SCIENCE OF MAKING ICE CREAM Campers enjoyed learning the science of making ice cream on Fridays. Who know science could be so yummy? The dissolved solutes (mostly sugar) in the liquid portion of the mixture lower its freezing point, resulting in a yummy creamy texture. The salt added to the ice lowers the melting point of the ice. Ice cream is a compound. Once all the ingredients of the ice cream are mixed together they are bound together. And bound to end up in your belly. Yum!!! QUICK & EASY ICE CREAM IN A BAG RECIPE Ingredients Base Ice Cream: 2 cups whole milk 1/2 cup granulated sugar 1 tablespoon vanilla extract 10 cups ice 8 tablespoons rock salt
DIRECTIONS For the base ice cream: Stir the milk, sugar and vanilla together in a medium bowl. Pour 1/2 cup of the mixture into a sandwich-size resealable plastic bag. Make vanilla ice cream or add in your desired flavors to make mint chocolate chip, chocolate or strawberry ice cream. Tightly seal the bag. Put that bag into another sandwich-size resealable plastic bag and tightly seal. Repeat with the remaining batter and desired flavors. Place the ice and the salt into a 4-quart food storage container with a lid. Put the filled bags into the container and secure the lid. Shake the container until the mixture is frozen and resembles ice cream, about 5 minutes. Remove the bags with the ice cream in it from the outer bag and snip a large piece off one corner of each bag. Pipe the ice cream into small bowls.
