AROUND THE GOWANUS Much of the community occupying the surrounding industrial buildings of the Gowanus canal were artists. Starting from the residences as studio to public art studio facilities to galleries, Gowanus Canal is a rich neighborhood in terms of art and culture. In following the existent cultural grain I proposed an artplex fitted with rentable studio space (open and private), with an accompanying gallery space for showings and events.

BLURRING THE LINES BETWEEN WORK | HOME WORKING FROM HOME New technologies and new labour-market structures mean that the home can once again be seen as a place of work. The home becomes the ideal place for small businesses and artists studios. While the upper levels are kept residential, the lower levels are used as a public gallery and open studio space. Some units include double-height studios, while others are simply private studios that are independent from any living space.

PUBLIC STUDIO SPACE VS PRIVATE STUDIOS This proposal aims at providing options for artists of varying socioeconomic statuses to work together. Options include (1) working privileges in the public open studio, (2) renting a private studio, and (3) renting a residence that includes studio space. This broadening of the artists backgrounds creates an open and creative environment, focused on integration and diversity. (i) Translucent Glass to Transparent 1:1

Options include (1) working privileges in the public open art studio, (2) renting a private studio, and (3) living in a residence with an attached private studio. THREE FUNCTIONS OF CIRCULATION Apertures along the surfaces are formed from these field lines for pedestrian, light, and air circulation. The multiple apertures allow light to filter into the underground arcade. The circulation wells connect the underground arcade to the elevated platform level. LIGHT OVER HEAVY Another aspect of the design calls for light structure over heavy. The light canopy frame provides shelter from the rain and structural support, while allowing light to filter thru the platform to the underground. 12

WOOD GRAIN STUDIES Starting from wood grain studies, I was able to derive a parametric system of cuts in generative components. The programmatic shifts, access points, and apertures informed the degree to which the wood was split and bent both along and against the grain.

URBAN PARK The gradual sloping green roof of the port authoirty offices is thus a walkable urban park for both the public and internal office workers, providing access to the exterior at junctions where the surfaces intersect. NATURAL FILTRATION SYSTEM While the green roof creates a pleasant exterior space, it also functions as a natural filtration system of plants and pebbles that filters polluted rain water as it runs down the sloped roof. 17

PARAMETRIC SYSTEM OF CUTS The parametric system was derived from the grain studies described below. The unit begins rectangular cross-section of wood and a focus point. The distance of the focus point would determine the # of rings (and cuts) projected on the wood. The wood piece would be subjected to warp, force, thickening, and twisting depending on the length of the cuts. WOOD GRAIN STUDIES

NEGATIVE

The wood studies began with a cross-section of a douglas-fir 2x4. Tests comprised of soaking in water at varied times to determine changes. The longer the wood was placed in water, the more it warped. However, thickness and evenness was adversely correlated with its warp.

The data derived from the demographics of the surrounding neighborhood was embedded in the parmetric surfaces of the design. The parametric units of the roof and floor are pulled down at moments to create a variety of functional architectural elements: columns, skylights, occupyable space and hydroponic ponds. The shifting program consists of (1) the slow Taichi that would primarily take place during the morning and (2) the fast-paced Muay Thai that would be taught at night. These shifting programs aim at drawing in the two polarized groups in the area.

The parametric units of the design are formed to create a variety of functional architectural elements: columns, skylights, seating, restrooms, storage, hydroponic ponds, etc. The roof system will be used as skylighting system, as well as a green hydroponic pool system. The ground-level extruded pods can be multifunctional: as seating areas, stage, or meeting place. Interior usages are as storage or restroom. Due to the police parking, the front facade is left open, while the walkable roof picks up slightly at the end for a small back entrance. This low-lying building aims at becoming both an walkable public space and a green park space with its gently sloping roof.

Designing the enclosure for the Maison Domino, Le Corbusiers innovative architectural model, I strove to create a environementally responsive skin. Each facade of the Maison Domino is composed of a different tile. The solar orientation determines the opacity of the tile for the corresponding facade. For example, the north facade is composed of tile A for a more transparent and open wall. The tiles are composed of eight points, four of which that move along the edge for a gradation of opacity. The main concept of these animated shells is revolution. These revolving shells rotate in opposite directions to open. The shells each revolve 45 degrees in its respective direction in a simultaneous but opposite motion. With each shell revolving around the center rod, the connected slats are each fixed to its respective shell layer. Each shell is made up of a differing material (ceramic, aluminum, and glass). Slots are cut into each of the two inner shells to allow the slats to pass through the inner shells. An arm that tucks in horizontally between the connecting slats can unwrap itself from its neutral position. Free to pick up objects, rotate, and project forward, the arm is a more free-moving component than the shells. Each revolving set of shells contains a single source of light placed in the center that create gradients of shadow through rotating slots, arm, glass, and shell edges. Each animated shell floats, bounces, and tilts when in motion to create more intense and/or angled lights. 30

Three differing types of baths were isolated and mapped against the existing aqueducts: (1) thermae refer to Imperial baths, (2) balnae refer to public baths, and lastly (3) piscina refers to cool water pools. The scale of the circle represent the size of the baths.

While piscinas can exist far from the aqueducts, most of the thermaes and the balnaes are set close to the aqueducts, resulting from the constant need for fresh water.

&

2013 ICFF Exhibition

The damage from “Hurricane Sandy in NYC was considerable, affecting all five boroughs. In quantifying the damage, 311 service requests were collected to gauge both its range and recovery. Complaints of combined sewage overflows (CSOs), tree damages, and fire damages were mapped in quanitifying the elemental damages caused by Sandy. Spanning over a three week period, we are able to see the response and recovery of these damages.

MEDIA COVERAGE

PRATT Green Week Exhibition

The aftermath of the storm was devastating with the media mostly focused on covering the damage in Manhattan and the Rockaways. However, the devastation had not only been isolated to these areas. Areas in the other three boroughs were also hard-hit; Staten Island in particular incurred massive amounts of water damage.
