A Personal Message from Kylie Welsh, Founder of SHEentrepreneur Hello and thanks for downloading The SHEentrepreneur Ultimate Success Blueprint! I wanted to let you know that my deepest passion has always been assisting women to achieve success. My background, prior to owning my own business, had been in writing professional development programs for corporate women. I then became a published author and professional freelance writer on issues affecting modern women. Through my SHEentrepreneur community, I now transition women in business from being good at what they do, into being the authority in their industry. My particular area of expertise is coaching female entrepreneurs to build credibility and create profit through writing articles, books and developing their own Information Products. The idea for my business came when I was attending networking events, to generate ideas for my freelance writing. Something out of the ordinary occurred to me at this time. Have you ever had that feeling of ‘coming home’ in the most unexpected place? That is what it was like for me. Connecting with women who were pursuing their passion, I had somehow stumbled across my life purpose. The feeling was exhilarating and I could not stop writing articles about these amazing female entrepreneurs. At that time, the publications I was working for weren’t so interested in stories about women in their own business, so I decided to start writing my own blog. The blog was called Brisbane Woman and was based on women in their own business who were living in Brisbane. Like most people, I was apprehensive about starting a blog and very unsure if anyone was even going to read it. But I thought I’d at least give it a try and if no one read it, I’d simply pull it down in three weeks! I began to grow

my database by attending networking events and telling people about my blog. I explained that there was no cost involved and that I would love to have their input. I simply asked them to visit and have a look. Within 3 months I had 500 weekly readers. I knew I was connecting with women in a meaningful and helpful way because I was working hard to provide something of value to them. Brisbane Woman soon grew into a full time business for me and was the foundation and learning centre for my next business SHEentrepreneur. For the first 3 months with Brisbane Woman, I lived on very little money, which was fine because I was newly single, loving every minute of building my own business and the sense of freedom that came with it. You can however only live on love for so long and I needed to come up with a way to monetise my blog. I started running business and networking events for my readers and charging a small fee of $25 to attend. I tell you this so you understand that I started my business on shaky ground – there was no ‘ideal time’, no business plan in place, no investor support or months of research and preparation – I saw a potential opportunity, my intuition screamed YES and I went for it! Despite the less than ideal circumstances, I still managed to generate a successful business that was personally very fulfilling. It took me a full two years of business success and failures to have an inkling of what it takes to run a successful business. In my third year, the penny started to drop and I moved from doing ‘okay’ to a highly profitable business with many income streams. A fundamental part of this was understanding that I needed to STEP UP and become the authority in my niche. This meant my profile grew rapidly in the next 12 months and so did my revenue! I actually tripled my income over this time. Nothing has created greater freedom in my life than acknowledging to myself that I was READY and embarking on a 12 month strategic plan to make this happen. phase is possible for other female business owners too and I love now being able to mentor this change! The first phase of my business, Brisbane Woman, was focussed on connecting women and teaching them how to gain business credibility through the written word – articles, Ebooks and Information Products. Credibility is vital for female entrepreneurs but it’s not enough to support long term business growth. Being able to position yourself as the authority, price yourself at a premium and generate a healthy profit is a far greater challenge, in my experience, for many female business owners. SHEentrepreneur evolved because I saw a strong need for women to push their businesses to the next level. Many women take the courageous step into starting their own businesses but then end up working longer hours for less and many soon experience burnout. Learning to successfully monetise your expertise and authority is a must, for long term business success and sustainability. I too was tired of trading my time for money and the cycle of working longer and longer hours to earn more money, so I developed the philosophy of ‘do the work once and get paid forever’. I started to realise that by putting my expertise down on paper and into Information Products, it would not only increase my revenue dramatically and create new income streams but I would be able to assist so many more women, who were likely experiencing the same frustration I was. I also knew it was time to step up and be the leader I knew I was meant to be. Going online and joint venturing with other entrepreneurs was also vital. I knew that having a local, events based company would never put me in touch with the thousands of women I wanted to connect with, globally. I hope this book empowers all female entrepreneurs, at whatever stage you are in your business life, to realise that you really can be 'the' expert in your Niche and create a PROFITABLE Business! © SHEentrepreneur 2011

NETWORKING MADE EASY
If you compare networking to other forms of new business development, it is less expensive, far more effective and vital for all female entrepreneurs to be skilled in this. Successful networking is a great step towards increasing your contacts, increasing profit in your business and building your industry profile. With networking, the thing to remember is that it takes time to reap the benefits. Just as you can’t build a highly successful business or profile overnight, the same patience and time investment needs to be applied to networking. For female business owners new to networking, the most important thing to remember is that it isn’t all about you. The key to successful networking is showing interest in other people and what they are doing, genuine interest too. The best female networkers I know have a real interest in people and it shows because they come across as authentic in their interactions with everyone. If you view a networking event as an opportunity to only talk about yourself, then the results are likely to be less effective. Everyone has a fabulous story, so listen to your networking contacts and look for areas of synergy and not sales opportunities. Rather than Š SHEentrepreneur 2011

wondering how you could sell to this person, think about how you can help them. Are you able to offer them some genuine advice? Do you know someone who might be able to complement their business or help their career? Without a doubt my most effective and profitable networking connections have come out of a mutual desire to help and complement each other initially. Professional networking takes times too. You need to allow 6 months of consistent networking before you will truly see valuable results. If you are consistent in your efforts, it will be noticed and people will soon develop a healthy respect for you. They will see you ‘walk your talk’ and know you are serious about forming long term relationships and not just looking for a quick sell. Creating a lasting impression will work wonders in networking too. Taking a genuine interest is the first step and also remember to really listen. Try not to be judgmental about the person you are talking to. It is very easy to make incorrect assessments about people, so give everyone you speak to your respect and undivided attention. Don’t scan the room looking for people who ‘look like’ your ideal customer. By putting your best foot forward in all your conversations, if nothing else, each person will be left with a great impression of you. Who knows when they will next speak to someone who might need your product or service! Preparation is Key Before you attend your networking event, you’ll need to prepare and rehearse a 60 second snapshot about what you do. This is called your ‘elevator pitch’. It’s important that you practise this so it is delivered in your conversation, naturally. The more you practise, the more confident you will be and the more confidence you will instil in the other person. Your 60 second ‘elevator pitch’ should include what you do and a nice benefit that you think might be of interest.

Remember people are interested in what makes their heart sing, rather than a long list of features. How will your product or services make him/her feel, how will it improve their life? Instead of saying I run a mentoring program for women in business, I might say that I empower women to create a highly profitable business. What is your elevator pitch? Think about how your business will enhance the customer’s life in some way. Write it down, edit it and then say it out loud. You really need to connect with the pitch and feel good about it, because it’s vital that it comes across as authentic and genuine. So keep practicing until the words feel right and truly reflect what you are trying to say. Start working on it right now:
Feeling Great I always recommend that when you are attending networking events, to look good too, as this will naturally make you feel more confident. It’s a bit like going on a date - wear an outfit that you feel confident and comfortable in. If you’re feeling great when you walk into a networking event, it will show. I always wear something that stands out too - in a positive way. It’s nice for people to have something to comment on and it helps them remember who you are too. It doesn’t need to be an expensive designer outfit. It can be as simple as a funky necklace or cute earrings. I met a lady recently who had a lovely, delicate brooch on her lapel. I am not even a brooch wearer but it was so unusual and feminine that I could not stop looking at it. I’ll always remember Kay as the lady with the brooch. See how simple it can be!

Follow Up After your networking event, follow up all the people you spoke with. This might be as simple as sending an email to say ‘great to meet you’. If you think there is more synergy, then organise to catch up for a coffee or perhaps a chat on Skype. Let him/her know that you think there might be some ways you can help each other. Most busy business owners can’t always say yes to everyone, so give them a good reason to come along. Maybe you think you could help their business in some way, or perhaps the two of you could work together in the future etc. This will be the start of building a relationship and growing your business. The Top 10 Tips for Successful Networking! 1. Smile and be genuinely interested in other people, especially the person you are talking to. 2. Wear an outfit that makes you feel super confident. 3. Practice your elevator pitch until it feels natural. 4. Use their business card to write something interesting about each person you meet and mention it in the follow up email. How good does it feel, when someone remembers something personal about you? 5. If you are attending a speed networking event and you would like to follow up with an interesting/interested person, put a fold in their card as you won’t have time to make notes during the networking. Twenty to thirty new contacts can start to blur after a speed networking event, so this is a great way to remind yourself who to take action with. 6. Don’t bring a friend along, unless they are a keen networker too. Push yourself to go on your own and talk to new people. It’s easy to stand and chat with your friend, but really what is the point of doing this at a networking event? I have never © SHEentrepreneur 2011
10
introduced myself to a person at a networking event and not had a positive response. Remember everyone is in the same boat as you, so talk to new people. 7. Don’t be afraid to make the first contact after a networking event, most people will be flattered - unless it is obvious you’re just trying to sell your product or service. 8. Go again and again. Be seen networking consistently and professionally and others will presume this is how you run your business also. 9. Be strategic in your follow up. Target people you have synergy with – not everyone at the event. 10. Think about why they should catch up with you. Come up with a WIFT (What is in it for them) and approach them using this technique.

GAINING CREDIBILITY
Women now own 585,000 of the 1.9 million small businesses operating in Australia. That is phenomenal and it means there are 585,000 women who are unbelievably good at what they do! How do we transition from being good at what we do, to being respected and credible Experts within our industries? It’s really important to think about YOUR OWN capabilities whether attending an event or working online. This involves developing your confidence and a greater awareness of the level of skills and expertise you really do have. It also gives you plenty of ammunition when someone says, “What makes you such an expert?” Let’s face it, this question can throw ALL of us initially, if we’re not prepared and totally convinced of our own value. As a business owner, YOU need to think yourself as an expert and SHEentrepreneur. A SHEentrepreneur is highly credible and authentic. There’s a lot of promotional guff going out about how to be an ‘overnight’ expert. Being an expert is one thing – being a credible expert is much more compelling. Through our mentoring program we can quickly package your solid experience and transform you into 'the' expert of choice, in your niche. This does not mean trying to make you into an overnight sensation based on incredible expertise or experience. I hope you can see the difference. I’ll give you an example that many new business owners face. My friend Julie has worked in Public Relations for over eight years. However being new in business, she felt very challenged by calling herself an expert but needed to position herself as such, to be attractive to potential new clients. When we put together her portfolio © SHEentrepreneur 2011

of work and achievements (which was amazing), the penny started to drop for Julie. Even though she was new to her own business and floundering a little at selling herself, she had eight years of results to prove her Public Relations expertise and this would form the basis of marketing her as a Public Relations Expert. Developing credibility within your niche, will create a strong, loyal community and long term relationships. Once you have that loyalty with your customers, it is really hard to lose. To start being seen as an authority, you must be able to demonstrate your expertise. This is important as it allows your audience to get to know you and therefore trust you. They will see you as an expert who ‘walks her talk.’ Don’t we all prefer to learn from someone who we actually SEE being real and authentic, in what they say and do? One of the most powerful ways to achieve this credibility is still through the written word. I began looking at developing women’s writing confidence because many female business owners, through Brisbane Woman, felt that they were not a ‘natural born writer’ and it was challenging to present their expertise on paper, with confidence. The thing is, you don’t need to be born with amazing writing skills in order to be a competent writer for your business. That’s just not the case at all. Being a good writer is about connecting with your audience and engaging them emotionally. The good news is that both of these skills you can actually learn and develop! Women can write very well, when they are writing about what they are passionate about. Getting written products on your site that demonstrate your expertise is vitally important for all female business owners. Once you’ve got an Ebook or Blueprint on your site and are now an author on your topic of expertise, this automatically helps validate you as the expert. As a business owner, you already have this really valuable information in your head. You talk to your team, friends and clients about it all the time. The next step is to put pen to paper, so the rest of the world can learn about you too! © SHEentrepreneur 2011

THE 7 ESSENTIALS FOR WOMEN IN BUSINESS
1. Work Experience - Jot down ALL your paid work and UNPAID work experience in your area of expertise. Seriously, I know it’s basic but it will help! Perhaps you have been helping a friend with her SEO (Search Engine Optimization) for example. All this work experience counts, so make a list of ALL your work experience in this area. • • • • • • • • 2. An online presence through website and blog - In today’s technological society, you need to have professional web presence. You can set up a basic wordpress website for free or you can get an expert to set up one for between $500 - $700. Circle the answer below that is appropriate for you now.

√ My website is complete and ready to go √ My website is under construction √ I need to get my website started asap If you have ticked option 2 or 3, you will need to write an action plan below to get this completed. This step is vital! You cannot become a credible expert without a professional web presence. Who do you need to contact? Who can you ask for help? Who do you know who has built a new website lately? How can you connect with other business owners who have been through the same experience recently? Action steps to take:
3. Be a source of knowledge for people – On your website you need to have SEO optimized Resources and Information Products that people will come looking for through searches. If a customer needs some information on IT for small business for example and you have free information on your website, then they will find you. If you have a compelling offer, they might even sign up for your newsletter or come back to you when they are ready to buy. Do you have the following on your website?

√ A Compelling Free offer for potential new customers √ Interesting Articles on your area of expertise √ Information Products at different price points for customers to purchase No? What do you need to do to get this to happen? Don’t worry if you are a bit stuck here, we are going to take you through this later in the book.
4. Your Social Media Profile – Are you on Facebook, Twitter and LinkedIN? When I am looking for Experts to support me in my SHEentrepreneur Mentoring Program, I will always check whether the person is active and if they have a high profile on social media sites. It adds one more layer of professional integrity in the market place. It also means my members easily develop relationships with that expert after an event, which I believe provides far more value for them. 5. Write Articles, Ebooks, Published Books, Special Reports and BluePrints – The power of the written word is especially relevant to women in business who are trying to set themselves up as an authority in the market. Writing about your area of expertise automatically sets you up as ‘the’ expert and boosts your credibility. This Success Blueprint will provide you with some valuable tools to do the above effectively, so stay tuned. 6. Facilitate Learning and Demonstrate Your Credible Experience – By facilitating learning for your customers, you demonstrate to others that you can ‘walk your talk’. Capture yourself visually, so new customers can see your face or record an audio. Your © SHEentrepreneur 2011

customers can then hear your voice while they are learning an important tool or strategy they have come to your website to find. A welcome video on your website is also a wonderful relationship building tool. This way new customers can see you and hear your voice. Both audio and visuals are excellent ways for your to connect with those customers in a powerful way and also provides a meaningful learning experience too. A great way to do this is through your own teleseminars, webinars and workshops which we will talk about later. These are all potential touch points for new customers, which will help build trust as they get to know you. Some examples could be as simple as: 1. Putting up a video on how to apply eye make up to achieve a smokey look, if you are a makeup artist 2. Record an audio of the top tips to setting up a home office for a professional organiser 3. Or, how to select a gift that is totally unique, if you have an online gift basket business. Think about the questions your customers are asking for help with currently. Every time someone asks your advice, make a note of the topic and put a free resource on your site showing others how to overcome this challenge. 7. Speaking services – Wherever you are located in the world, there will be groups in your area, looking for a passionate and engaging speaker. Putting your hand up and offering to do this is a great way to get your name and business well known. Speaking for FREE is a wonderful business development opportunity, as it not only develops your confidence but also means you are speaking to a new group of potential customers. Speaking gigs will also enhance your professional integrity.

Being asked to come along and speak at an event is a wonderful acknowledgement of your expertise. It’s also an invaluable business development strategy, if you are trying to grow your business and can speak to your target audience. Try looking for local, relevant events and start approaching the organisers. Once you have a few speaking engagements under your belt, start approaching some online experts. Getting in front of someone’s huge database is one of the most savvy and profitable ways to develop your business. What are you doing to position yourself as an expert? Look back over the 7 steps and identify what you are doing right! √ √ √ √ √ What areas need development? Write them down and make a note of an action you can take that will help implement this step. WRITING ARTICLES
The First Step to raising your profile! Let me begin by saying, article writing is a must for any savvy business owner and an area that many do not take full advantage of. If you’re not writing interesting articles about your area of expertise, then you are missing out on valuable opportunities to connect with new customers and bring continual new traffic to your site. One of the challenges for many female entrepreneurs is confidence with article writing. A great strategy to help with this is simply to take the focus off yourself and concentrate on the core message you wish to share. If you move away from worrying about not being a good enough writer and turn the focus onto communicating your message, then you will have greater confidence and success. Trust me on this! What is the No.1 message that you would like to get across to new customers?
Š SHEentrepreneur 2011
19
Whether it’s stepping out into writing, public speaking or networking, by taking the focus off YOU and focussing on the MESSAGE, your delivery will be far more compelling! Remember your readers and audience show up to hear the fantastic information that YOU are SHARING! People often think that because I’ve had a book published and worked as a freelance writer that I have amazing writing skills. The truth is I am an untrained writer and not particularly inherently talented. I never studied journalism and everything I learnt has been self taught. That’s probably why I feel I can ‘walk my talk’ with other female entrepreneurs about developing writing confidence. When my first book was published in 2005, readers said they loved it because it felt like they were talking to their best friend. Achieving this relationship with your audience is through being authentic in the way you communicate. For many women, this is already a skill that we have naturally and we use it every day in normal communication. Writing for your business is simply taking this skill to the next level. However, taking this step will have a MAJOR impact on your business, because of the capability to reach a far wider audience. One of the first things I do is ask female entrepreneurs to jot down their ideas and what they are passionate about. This exercise will kick start the creative flow and you’ll soon understand how much valuable knowledge you have to share. From there we generate 10 ideas, related to that topic. Here is my example: My business is about: Women in Business My article ideas could be? √ Writing Articles √ Writing Ebooks √ Developing Products © SHEentrepreneur 2011

My business is about: My article ideas could be? √ √ √ √ √ √ √ √ √ √ Now we have 10 potential article ideas to get working on. Later, these can be expanded into chapters of your Ebook. I started by writing a whole book and then editing individual chapters down to various articles and sending them editors. This kick started my freelance writing career. It is the opposite way to most people but why not? © SHEentrepreneur 2011

The information was already researched and it wasn’t difficult to tweak, to suit a weekly newspaper column. You can do the opposite. Start writing articles on the different topics related to your area of expertise and before you know it, you’ll have an outline for a book in your hands. Seriously, this is how easy it is! Remember I speak from experience here, having worked with hundreds of female business owners on this area, all of whom are now writing consistently and confidently.
Writing Articles For The Internet Writing for the internet is very different to writing for a news editor, although it’s great to know how to write in both styles and understand when to use either. If you’re writing articles for your blog, then this is naturally in a more relaxed and personal style. Imagine if someone reads your blog and then asks you to write for a local paper on the topic or an industry newsletter or journal. Although your blog can be written in a more casual way, when it comes to sharing your knowledge in print media or professional associations, it will need to be done in a more proficient format. Good article writing lies in good PLANNING, collecting your material and thinking clearly once you have your ideas. Spend some quiet time thinking before you even set pen to paper and ask the universe for inspiration too! The Structure: The title and your first sentence is vitally importance to grab your readers’ attention, so use this constructively to entice your readers to want to read more. Start making notes of headlines that are jumping out at you. Write them down. When you are reading your emails in the morning, what titles prompt you to open the email and which ones are you deleting? You’ll start to understand what makes YOU want to take action and it will be similar with your readers. © SHEentrepreneur 2011
22
Develop your theme step by step – it’s like building a wall, brick by brick. Plan what you are going to say and how you are going to say it. Make a list of your main points, then elaborate on them. Progress logically, naturally and smoothly from one point to another, so that they lead to a conclusion. Think back to your school days. There is a reason that we all learnt to write with a strong introduction, followed by the body and finishing with a compelling conclusion – it works! Some people will decide to hire freelance writers to write articles for them. This is probably why article writing in itself has become such a fast growing profession that more people are taking to and earning a real income. You can get articles written, for as little $2-$7 per article, if you outsource this function overseas. Elance and odesk are the most popular sites for outsourcing. This way you might commission someone to write 10 articles on social media, for example. This is a very cost effective way to get articles written for busy female entrepreneurs. If you go down this route, then ensure you revise the article and put some of ‘you’ in there, before you publish it. In other words – infuse your personality into the article. Your readers will learn your voice, so if it doesn’t sound like your tone, humour and personality, then it’s going to come across as very unauthentic. If you don’t have the time to write, then outsource that function and you can take on the role of editing. It’s far better to do this and get regular articles on your website than continually say, “I don’t have time to write articles.” If I visit a site and there aren’t recent ‘meaty’ blog posts or articles for me to read and learn from, then it is unlikely I will come back visiting. Remember, we are ALL looking for quick, free information off the internet. SEO optimised articles are a great way to get new potential customers coming to your site for tips and free information.

Here are 5 Tips on How to Make Your Article GREAT: • A great headline is a must – start studying what headlines you like and dislike • Use simple language always • Shorten your sentences and paragraphs • Be conversational in your approach – this will help the reader feel like they are getting to know you • Infuse your personality into the article – especially if you have outsourced the writing function
Remember: 1. Emotionally engage your readers and they will keep coming back! 2. Article writing is all about emotional engagement and personality – make sure yours is shining though. Not sure how to achieve this? Think about the people you follow and read regularly. Think about why it is you connect with them. How are they getting their personality across? How can you build the same rapport with your readers? What is it about their articles that emotionally tug at you sometimes? Start experimenting! Tips for Writing Articles for the Web • Do your research and use your keyword phrases in your article. It’s of no benefit to anyone if your articles aren’t found in Google searches • Try to include a keyword in your title too • 3 paragraphs is ample • 500-800 words is typical of most internet articles © SHEentrepreneur 2011
24
What do you do with the articles once you have written them? • Post on your website or blog • Post in industry forums • Create a link for your social media platforms, so followers on Facebook, Twitter and LinkedIN can read them and share. • Submit to article directories If you type ‘article directories’ into Google, there are heaps of free ones to choose from. I use Articlesbase.com and EzineArticles. com mostly. You can also pay for your articles to submitted onto a directory and reach new audiences. Submityourarticle.com is one that is popular. It feeds high quality sites, demands a high standard of article and you can get thousands of visitors each day for $47 per month. Now I ask my VA (Virtual Assistant) to post my articles on these Top 10 Free Directories. Top 10 Free Article Directories are: 1. Ezine Articles www.ezinearticles.com 2. BLOGGING Blogging is one of the best ways to build a community and connect with your readers. Why? The relaxed and conversational tone allows your audience to get to know the ‘real’ you very quickly. It’s also a powerful way to build readerships and a loyal following. I really encourage business owners to have a blog and to update it regularly with relevant and interesting content. Blogging is also a great place to start with your article writing. Because it is YOUR blog, there is a certain amount of freedom that comes with this and also the opportunity to experiment (within reason!). When you first start blogging, it’s typical to worry about things like, ‘Is anyone going to read this? How embarrassing if no one does!’ This is perfectly normal when you’re going out of your comfort zone. Once you actually take the plunge and start blogging, you’ll find blogging is a real form of self expression. You are naturally passionate about your topic and because you are passionate and engaging, it’s really interesting to other people as well. We all love to connect with passionate people, especially women in business who are passionate about what they do! You’ll also be surprised how rewarding it is too. I don’t sign up for heaps of blogs these days because I just don’t have time to read them all. The people whose blogs I regularly enjoy reading, provide interesting content that is clear, simple, straight forward and which I personally find very helpful. Their personalities are also very engaging and I feel like I get to know them through their writing. This doesn’t mean that you have to be an extrovert or pretend to be something you are not. It’s more that you come from a very authentic place and people can see that you really care about what they do. If we focus on what’s going to be value to our readership rather than ourselves, the outcome is always more compelling. © SHEentrepreneur 2011

Another advantage of blogging is that it really helps you to clarify your passion and what you want to communicate. Once you start blogging, through trial and error, you’ll soon learn what works and what doesn’t. This can influence your marketing message and help you become more targeted with your audience too. Initially when I started Brisbane Woman, I really wanted to provide a one stop shop for women, that was my million dollar idea! I was putting content about EVERYTHING related to women, because I was just so interested in everything too. I soon realized that this just doesn’t work. My message was scattered and non targeted and my readership initially was the same. My initial readers were a mixture of stay at home mums, business women, corporate chicks and students. I was trying to provide value for all of them. It was exhausting and in the end I went with my passion – women in their own business. I knew doing this would mean that I would lose some of my readership but it also meant that for women in their own business, I was about to become a MORE valuable asset. Because I began to make a niche for myself, I was able to provide targeted information. It can take a little while to find your exact niche but that is why experimenting with a blog is so exciting. The articles you write for your blog can also be put on articles directories, with a slight edit. Just remember, if you are posting on article directories, make sure you have enough content on there to entice new readers to your site. You are still only doing the work once, but getting your name out there and building authority. Blogging is a lot of fun! You can keep it interesting and fresh for yourself and readers by mixing it up. Here are some of the tools you can incorporate into the blogging mix.

CREATING A FREE RESOURCE
A compelling FREE RESOUCE is a no brainer as an effective client attraction strategy tool for all women in business. What FREE Resource should go on your website and how much information do you share? The first step is identifying your target audience and how you can help them. You need to provide a ‘compelling offer’ that will solve a problem in their lives. If your freebie download can solve a problem or make their life easier in some way, then new customers are likely to sign up. Your free resource will be the carrot to motivate customers to subscribe to your blog or website. Some examples could be: • 10 top tips how to....(put your topic/area of expertise in here.) My example was: 10 Top Tips on How to Make the Most Out of Networking. • 5 ways to...My example could be: 5 steps To Writing an Effective Article. • 10 things…My example could be: 10 Things Not To Do When Building Relationships With Your Customers • The 7 pillars to…My example could be: The 7 Pillars to Building Credibility

Activity: What freebie could you offer? List the problem that you are solving for the customer or how your freebie will make their life easier? Here is my example. 10 Top Tips to Making The Most Out of Networking Benefit to customer: The business owner will no longer feel overwhelmed when attending networking events because, after reading my free document, they will be well prepared, know what to expect and how to build relationships while at an event and afterwards.
I’d also suggest doing some research. Who else is in the market place and what are your competitors offering? It would be silly and unoriginal of me to put up a networking document if my competitors are doing the same things. It pays to offer something different and of greater value. Do you have a professional email service? When I first started my business, I used to run my database through my Outlook folder. What a nightmare! Nothing has saved me more time than transferring to an email service. Now I can send thousands of emails, in a matter of seconds. Imagine how long it took me to do this through Outlook – eek. © SHEentrepreneur 2011

An email service will also allow you to put a sign-up form on your website, so you can capture your new customers’ emails and start building a relationship with them. Once your new customer downloads the free document, a newsletter is a great way to keep developing a relationship. Most email providers will have a variety of newsletter templates to choose from. Even if you don’t want to do a newsletter, think about how else can you provide value and build relationships with new customers. Maybe you can send out a weekly article or an educational video. With SHEentrepreneur I send out a weekly Video Business Success Tip. This has been a big success with my database and the wonderful feedback I receive each week is the motivation I need to keep creating them! A good email service will allow you to set up a sequence of emails for your new customers. For example, when a customer first signs up, you will send them a welcome email. Over the next few weeks you might email them weekly or fortnightly, providing them with valuable information or video. By week six you could send out a special offer that will help them in some way. Instead of doing this manually each time, all you need to do is set up your sequence of emails once and each time a customer signs up, the sequence is sent automatically for you. Here are a few good ones to take a look at. They range in price, depending on how many subscribers you have, but are all very affordable and cost effective. These systems also have great statistical tracking so you can monitor what headings/mail-outs/campaigns etc work best and how many of your database are actually reading your newsletter or watching your video, which is a great help. It also allows you to monitor which content and headlines are getting the best response from your readers. www.aweber.com ($10 per month for fewer than 1000 subscribers) www.sendpepper.com ($30 per month for under 2500 subscribers) www.mailchip.com (free) © SHEentrepreneur 2011

Tip: Attend a networking event and start asking people if your free download might be of interest. This is a great way to get new people to your site and into your sales funnel and also provides them with the valuable content too. The idea with a newsletter is to build your credibility so you become the ‘go to’ person for your customers, as you are providing relevant and interesting content. Your free download combined with an Enews is a great way to get new customers into the sales funnel of your business. Keep reading for some GREAT tips on how to design your newsletter.

The Design of Your Expert Enews
When thinking about a newsletter for my business, I studied the newsletters I received. What was good about them? What was difficult or a little boring to read? What stood out to me? I also signed up to receive a few of my competitors newsletters to see what they were doing. I wasn’t going to copy them, I just wanted to make sure I was offering something different and of greater value (in my opinion!). I would recommend that initially you keep your Enews simple. Newsletters that are too complex and provide too much information are not read these days. People are time poor and keeping it short and sharp will mean your subscribers are more likely to actually read it! The Content of Your Newsletter There are many ways you can provide relevant and interesting content to your readers, through your newsletter. First you can write your own articles in your area of expertise. Sometimes you might not have the time to do this.

If you’re a very busy business owner, here are a few more options. 1. Have a guest author - invite someone else to write an article for you. Most people are only too flattered to do this and it provides a link back to their website for them. This way they also get to promote what they do with your audience. 2. Sign up to Google alerts – this has been invaluable tool for me. It means now that I get all the latest articles around the world that are focused on women in business and then I can share these with my database. Does that make me look like the expert? Yes! It also saves my readers having to go and source this information themselves. Newsworthy articles about women in business are now at their fingertips and arrive in their inbox once a month. How much easier does that make life for them? 3. Advertise any special promotions you have - don’t forget this is about you and your business too. Put your promo towards the end of your newsletter but make sure you do include it. You always need a call to action asking your subscribers to click through to your website for a reason. 4. Are there any experts resources you can include? Once again this is a useful resource as it will save your reader having to source such information. It also means you are building integrity with them, as you are first in mind when they need to know what is going on in their industry. 5. Have a customer highlight section. Why not put one of your customers in the spotlight each month. This is a great way to promote what one special customer does and shows your database that you actually care about your customer’s success. 6. Decide how often it gets sent. When I first started doing my newsletter I sent it out every week on a Thursday (for 6 long months). When my business started to expand, I couldn’t do this any more. I started sending it out monthly and also enjoyed this © SHEentrepreneur 2011

process much more. It was no longer a chore to try to find things to write about. Now I have an email folder for anything interesting I want to include in my monthly Enews and once a month I send it to my VA, who puts it all together nicely for me. Remember the point of your newsletter is to provide valuable content for your customers. This information must help them, make their life easier and set you up as a credible expert in their mind. Research shows that the best time to send out information to customers is between 10am-2pm on Tuesday, Wednesday and Thursday. Always remember as a SHEentrepreneur‌

EBOOKS
The publishing industry has changed dramatically with the transformation of the internet. When I was trying to get my first book published, because I was an ‘unknown writer,’ I was told that it would be near impossible to get a publishing deal. I spent 12 months getting rejected from publishers throughout Australia before I found success. Today however, there are far more options available for budding authors and it’s not necessary to be at the mercy of big publishing houses. Many women are now self publishing or writing Ebooks with phenomenal success. Woman can now publish their own books to support their talents, passion and more importantly - grow their profiles and businesses. Ebooks are changing the publishing world. As 'the' expert and business owner, it’s important not only to build credibility through demonstrating your expertise but also to continually attract new customers. Ebooks are a wonderful and effective way to do this.

36
Why you should write an Ebook! 1. YOU Become The Expert! Becoming an author in your area of expertise, will open up many new doors for you and your business. 2. GROW YOUR BUSINESS – This marketing tool will attract many, many new clients. 3. An Ebook will GENERATE PASSIVE INCOME for your business, so you can spend more time doing what you love and with whom. Ebooks, if written well, are priced higher than printed books, most are from $20-$50 on the internet. Even if you decide your Ebook will be FREE to attract new customers – how much future revenue is this worth? An Ebook will also allow you to educate people from all over the world. Wouldn’t it be great to get your message out to thousands more people? 4. Brand Awareness – Your audience will grow to recognize you and your business therefore trusting your name and experience. 5. Low Up Front Cost and No Ongoing Cost. This becomes a pure attraction strategy for new clients and is essential for ALL women in business. Once you’ve written your Ebook, the work is done and the revenue will keep rolling in. 6. Instant Gratification for Potential New Customers – There will be no lengthy delays as customers receive their Ebook immediately and are more likely to take action.

Why NOT write an Ebook? Being a writing coach I can honestly say that one of the biggest challenges facing our talented female business owners is TIME. This is why we are going to transform your thinking and help you understand the importance of an Ebook for your business. It’s also easy, especially once you are familiar with article writing and blogging. Let’s get started. Two Types of Ebooks There are two different types of Ebooks in my opinion. One is an Ebook you write purely as an attraction strategy to develop a relationship with your new customers. The other is an Ebook for profit and contains more of your expertise or content that relate to your chargeable services. Chargeable Services Many business owners are confused about what content to put in our Ebooks, without compromising our chargeable services. My recommendation is this – you can provide the ‘what’ or the strategy for free, but the ‘how to’ is always chargeable. Think about the quantity of information available on the internet. There is heaps and heaps of FREE information. This means that often people will take your free information and go and implement it themselves. Many people however review the free information and realise that they need some more help, so will move onto your paid services. I believe if you have a free document of any kind on your website, it should be of a very high quality (like this one J) and be putting your best foot forward with any new customer.

Remember
CONTENT IS QUEEN!! If a customer does not buy from you straight way, that’s okay. As long as you’ve provided some valuable information and have built your authority a little more. At the very least they might send the Ebook to someone or recommend your services too. If you have provided them with a valuable and positive experience at your website, then you shall reap the rewards, in many ways - not just financial! The ‘how to’ is what you can charge for. Have a think about this when you are putting your content down, you will soon see the difference. You need to be able to identify what content will provide value in the written form also. Think about which information you would leave out for example and only do in a face to face workshop or in a one on one consultation. You can put your knowledge into the pyramid format too and this will help you determine different price points for products in your sales funnel. The wide opening at the top is the information you are providing for free. One level down is the next level of expertise and the narrow tip is the highest level paid work that you do with your coaching clients. There is nothing wrong with charging for your time and research to put together an Ebook that has heaps of free information. I’d gladly pay $9.95 for an Ebook, if it’s going to save me hours of research on the internet. Many female business owners think they need to put all their marketable secrets in an Ebook. getting clear on what free content you will put in, as opposed to your other chargeable services. If this is your first Ebook, I think it’s a great idea to create a free Ebook that will showcase your expertise and is going to attract customers to your website, so you can start building a relationship with them. This will develop your confidence and can be used for learning. The next step is to look at doing chargeable Ebooks. For example I often download Ebooks, especially free ones, to have a look at what other people are doing. If I go to the trouble of downloading an Ebook, then I need to get some information of value, even if it’s free. Otherwise it’s wasting my time and I am left with a negative impression of the person and their business. If however I’m reading a free Ebook that is very good, I will recommend it to my database of business owners. I know that if I want to, I can take it to the next step with that person and purchase some more information such as a paid Ebook or an online program. I might decide not to do this now for a variety of reasons. The important thing is I have learnt about a new expert and will happily recommend if their content is good! I will also come back to that expert if/when my needs become more urgent. I have done this many times before and ended up signing up for some online training when the time has been right for me and my business. If I’m really happy with the free content, I know they are someone who provides information of value. That actually makes me want to have a relationship with that person. It also means I’ll sign up to their blog or follow them on social media and start building a relationship. You’ll need to provide great content in a format where people will get to know you and learn about your area of expertise. If you have an Ebook on your website that demonstrates this really well, then you are setting yourself up for success.

Getting started Make a list of 5 things you can write about to enhance your expert status? We want to make sure that this Ebook will build your credibility and position you as ‘the’ expert. What are 5 topics related to your business you could write about? √ √ √ √ √ Deciding on a topic can be challenging but once you do, then it’s easy to move on to your Ebook writing! You’ll spend heaps of your precious time researching and writing about this, so it’s a good idea to have a very keen interest in the subject matter. If you are looking to write for commercial success, then make sure you do some research on each of your topic areas. What other books are in the market? Study them closely. Check out your competitors and do some key word research. How can you use these key words in your title? As always, knowledge is power, so know your competition well. Look at your competitors and how they are marketing their Ebooks. What are they doing well and not so well? What can you do better? You’ll also need to determine how your book will be different to any other book in the market? What is your USP (Unique Selling Position)? You must know this in order to market your book effectively. Focus on your book being as unique as possible – offer something totally different to the competition. © SHEentrepreneur 2011
41
My Topic is: My USP is: Brainstorm. Okay, now you have your topic, we’re going to brainstorm some ideas. I’ll give you an example for my book Impertinent Woman, published in 2005. My Subject: Modern women’s changing lives and how this affects their romantic relationships Brainstorming Topics: In no particular order… • How women’s lives have changed. • The men we dated in our youth, as compared to the men we date now. • What do women really want from relationships now? • Why the change? What has changed for women? • Modern relationship difficulties and what’s going wrong. • Relationship patterns – do we keep repeating them? • Childhood/family influence on our relationship choices. • My choices – what am I doing in my dating life? • The impact our career has on choices in our relationships. • Are modern women capable of compromise? What should we compromise on? • Society and single women in general. Is there still a stigma? • Successfully single women. Case studies. Brainstorming topics is a great way to get the creative juices flowing. Don’t worry, it doesn’t have to be perfect to start with. I went back over mine many times, reworded and changed the order - that’s all part of the fun. © SHEentrepreneur 2011
42
These brainstorming topics soon became the various chapters in my book. I was able to put them in a logical order. From there I had the basis for my book. More importantly, I had a template to follow and work with. This also gave me 10 different topics that I could research further and write articles on. WHAT EXTRAS ARE RELEVENT TO THIS TOPIC? Once you take action and get started, you will be well on your way to creating an Ebook that will grow your business and build your credibility. Go back now and think about what YOU can add that will really enhance each chapter. Sometimes research will be the best, for other chapters a personal story will work more effectively. This step is really important as it is what will transform your Ebook into a content rich, meaningful document for your readers. All the extras you put into your Ebook will ensure it stands out from competitors and enable you to build trust. It will also ensure your work is original, authentic and relevant. Stuck for ideas? Go to amazon.com and check out the table of contents for books in your area of expertise. Don’t worry, you won’t be copying them – you’re just generating ideas at this stage and getting inspiration.

Tips for Marketing Your Ebook:
It’s not time to bring out the champers just yet J. Once you have completed your Ebook, you are only half way there. Marketing your Ebook successfully is a vital piece of the success pie and you need to approach it with the same zest and enthusiasm you had writing your Ebook. Hopefully you will have also spent time researching your competitors. This is an invaluable step to your Ebook success and will help you generate lots of new marketing ideas. Below are some strategies to help: 1. Create some build-up and excitement. Let your database know your Ebook is coming… you’ll be surprised at how encouraging your customers will be. 2. Keep the price realistic. Think about what the purpose is of your Ebook. Would you like to build new relationships or is it to generate revenue? Check your competitors too. There is no point charging a higher price, if it’s not really obvious from the onset that you are providing value. 3. Ask your database to be involved. Send your customers a survey to find out the key points that they are interested in. Offer an incentive for them to complete the survey. Click here for some more information on how to create free surveys through Survey Monkey. 4. Create a sales page for your Ebook. Your Ebook needs to have a dedicated sales/landing page for your sales material, sample chapters, testimonials etc. This is a page specifically set up for © SHEentrepreneur 2011

the sale of your Ebook. It might include a promotional video, the cover of your book, testimonials, a free sample chapter and the option for new customers to buy and download your Ebook. 5. Give away a free sample chapter. This is a great ‘try before you buy’ strategy. If you are confident that the content of your Ebook is good, then this is a positive strategy. 6. Get Well Known Experts to review your Ebook. Make a targeted list and approach them – just do it, as you have nothing to lose. You never know your luck until you try. How will reviewing your Ebook ad value to their business? Try to put this succinctly. Make the “What’s In It For Them” obvious. 7. Grab testimonials from ANYONE who reads it. Put these on your sales page as soon as they come in. The more testimonials the better - always and forever! 8. Write follow-up posts and talk about your Ebook’s success with your database. The more you share with them, the better your relationships will be and the more likely they are to have a desire to read and purchase your Ebook. 9. Social Networking – Facebook, Twitter and LinkedIn. Make sure you are promoting your new Ebook on these platforms also. 10. Article Writing – Turn each of your chapters’ topics into an article and post these on your blog and in the online article directories we mentioned earlier. People who are interested in the article are your target audience. The articles will ensure they come and find you. 11. SEO (Search Engine Optimization – how you get found on Google) Use key words in your Ebook title, chapter titles, content and in your landing/sales page!

12. Google – Pay per click advertising. Investigate the potential of this for your business. Many business owners are having much success with this. 13. Facebook advertising – Think about the information you have entered on Facebook. Do any of these categories cover your niche?
(When a friend changed her relationship status to ‘single’ on Facebook, she was shocked how quickly single ads started popping up. Could this work for you?)
14. Video – YouTube is a must! Post a video about your new Ebook. Grab a video testimonial from a satisfied customer and use this on your website and on social media platforms. Customers are now watching 2 million YouTube videos a day. How are you taking advantage of this market? As I mentioned before, Gideon Shalwick is the authority in this area and having personally completed his online training program, can highly recommend it. 15. Audio - Podcasting and teleseminars. These are a great way to generate interest and discussions around your Ebook and area of expertise. It also allows your audience to get to know you a little bit too. Select a few new topics to discuss in your podcast or organise to interview someone. It could be an expert or a particular case study for example. 16. Write a Press release – send to the local media! I had an article published for a SHEentrepreneur member who released an Ebook called “Marrying Money,” about different money personalities and how to manage your money when you move in together or get married. The editor loved the title and given economic times, ran with the story. Bmag is delivered direct to over 428,627 Brisbane households each fortnight, reaching a potential audience of over 1,101,000 people every edition! What could this sort of exposure do for you?

Other Publishing Options Traditional Publishing Houses. If you want to be considered by a publishing house, it helps to have some writing experience. Enter competitions and get your stories or articles published in as many places as possible. If you have a popular blog - great, this will also be credible writing that will hold you in good stead. Many of the larger publishing houses are demanding this of their authors. You’ll need to write a really professional proposal to submit to any potential publisher. Topics covered in your proposal will be a synopsis of your book, book genre, the title, sub title, length of your book and your concept statement. Also include information about your target audience, the size of your market and what sets your book apart from any competition. There are a number of books that can help you with this. I recommend A Decent Proposal by Rhonda Whitton and Sheila Hollingworth. I would also recommend that you get a professional assessment through a manuscripts assessment service before you decide to approach a traditional publishing house. Most local writing centres offer this. You pay for the privilege (between $500-$800) but you’ll get an anonymous, unbiased review of your book from an industry professional. If your assessment is positive, it will be a great marketing tool to use when approaching publishers. If you’re book is not quite ready, you will receive constructive and valuable feedback about how you can improve your book.

TIP: Toni Jordan, author of the very successful, debut novel Addition recently shared her publishing secret. Toni attended workshops where representatives from her target publisher (Text Publishing) would be, while writing her novel. Toni introduced herself, kept in contact and developed relationships. When Toni finished her manuscript and had it positively assessed, one contact invited Toni to send it through to him. The rest is history! Think of ways you can connect with a publisher that is different or unusual. This is the best way to avoid the slush pile of unread manuscripts. Publishing houses have long lead times when it comes to publication. It can take up to 12-18 months for your book to get published and reach your readership. When your book hits the shelves however, you do have the publicity and support of a publishing house. Your publisher will make all the decisions about marketing the book including what book stores it will be in, advertising strategy, publicity and interviews you will need to do and book tours, etc. There is a high level of prestige being a published author, especially with a reputable publisher. However, you only receive a very small percentage of royalties for book sales with traditional publishers. When a copy of my book sells, I receive $2.00. But without that book, I wouldn’t be where I am now! Self Publishing. Self publishing is growing in popularity and demand. Many authors now totally skip approaching publishing houses and decide to publish their own books. Making the decision to self publish means that you have complete freedom over your book, from design and cover, through to timing, marketing and sales, but you’ll need to have funds available up front to produce your books. An initial print run of 500 books will cost you between $3000 and $5000. Self publishing means that you pay a self publishing house to print the book for you. The first step will be to research the many companies that offer self publishing services. Once a decision is made, within a © SHEentrepreneur 2011

few weeks you’ll have your book in your hand, ready to start selling. Make sure you have the room at home to store your books! If you decide to self publish, marketing your book is solely your responsibility, so consider this. How comfortable are you with marketing? Being internet savvy is a great start for marketing your book online. You can drive people to your book by writing online articles, setting up a blog and posting regularly or posting on other blogs/forums and utilising social networking sites like Facebook and Twitter. You can also attend events/trade shows where you can sell your book. Another great way to sell your book is to offer your services as a speaker to various groups and events. This marketing will pay off, as you receive all the money from your book sales. If your book sells for $25.00, you get the full $25.00. Print on Demand. Print on Demand (POD) publishing means your book is only printed when a copy is sold. The beauty of this form of publishing is this that you do not need to outlay funds upfront or physically store the books in your house. You won’t need to keep posting out your book each time a copy is sold either. Instead, you upload your completed book onto provider sites like Lulu and CreateSpace. Using POD Publishing also means your books will be sold on amazon.com. When a customer orders your book, the book is printed and sent out on your behalf. This can make life much easier for time poor budding authors. You pay for this service obviously, but you’ll definitely end up with more money per book, than through a traditional publishing house.

CREATING YOUR OWN INFORMATION PRODUCT
Your website is another vital tool in showcasing your expertise and professional credibility. Part of the expert pie is having your own products to sell – this is really important! If you have expertise in your head, then we can help you create information products. Many female business owners will come to the point in their business life, when they realise that 24 is simply not enough hours in the day! You seem to be in a constant, never ending battle that comes with trading your time for money. You’ve experienced some success but it has come at a BIG price to your lifestyle. Moving forward doesn’t have to mean taking on less work, it’s just about learning to work smarter! In fact, when done the right way, this strategy will create more time for you to grow your business. Successful female entrepreneurs soon realise that you can expand, without doing MORE work and putting MORE pressure on yourself. A powerful way to become recognised as an authority and create this business change is through monetising your area of expertise. If you would like to earn ongoing income from your knowledge, as well as free up your time - then an Information Product is a must! Creating Information Products has totally transformed my business and I’m sure it will do the same for you. The first challenge is identifying what Information Product (IP) will work for your business. There is a wide array of Information Products that are out there. What really is going to work? It’s very important that © SHEentrepreneur 2011
51
you not only create Information Products but that they are relevant for your audience. For example, a large portion of my database are work from home mums, whose business hours are between 9am-3pm only. My audience is also made up of very busy business owners, who don’t always have the time to be able to attend live events during the day. One of the options I chose to develop, is online training and different modules that can be worked through in your own time. Sometimes a lot of working mums, for example, really prefer to do their business training at night. It’s about thinking about your customer’s needs and providing valuable solutions for them. Not enough time I know as a female entrepreneur you are very busy and will probably think you are too busy to start creating products. You might well be – but creating Information Products will change your working life. When you start creating products, you end up saving time. This time can be used to grow your business. I found that I was becoming more and more frustrated, because I couldn’t spend time working ‘on’ my business and thinking about bigger picture ideas. If this is the same for you, then let Information Products help you create that time you need. Types of Products Let’s brainstorm some ideas for your products. Here are some formats we have already covered. • Blueprint document • Ebook • Workbook or manual from workshops you are currently running © SHEentrepreneur 2011

When you create a product that demonstrates your area of expertise, you naturally put a lot of work in it. For example, if you were creating workshop content, you would research and collate all the information that is required. So, why not take this up to the next step and create an actual product that you can keep selling online? Once you create an online program or even an Ebook and put it up on your site, new customers will keep buying this (long after your workshop is complete and your old workbooks are gathering dust.) Then you will find yourself waking up in the morning and realising that you’ve made sales overnight. ‘Wow, I’m earning money while I sleep.’ It only takes this happening a few times and you’ll soon realise the value of Information Products to your bottom line (and your sanity J). When you have Information Products on your website to sell, it opens you up to thousands more people who can come along to your website and purchase your program. It just makes sense on so many different levels. Once you have your product completed and on your website, people from all over the world can learn about you and FROM you. How great will that make you feel? If I’m doing a Google search, I can find you wherever you are in the world, visit your website and start building a relationship with you. What are the chances of this happening, if you don't have an Information Product of interest to me on your website? Highly unlikely! Even if you are a high profile speaker, your audience still needs to be live at the event where you are speaking! That’s why, when you are passionate about what you do, you need to have a © SHEentrepreneur 2011

product online to share with the world. When you think about the greatest impact that you could have, this is going to be when you have your expertise online and can connect with customers worldwide. That’s an amazing thing to be able to do! Technophobe? People are often scared of creating Information Products because of the perceived technical skills required. I have been guilty of thinking this way myself. I wanted to do it for so long but kept procrastinating, even though I knew it was necessary. The reality is anyone can make an Information Product. There are many different ways to get started and for you to develop confidence in this area. I was held back by thinking that the people creating Information Products were very technologically advanced and I wasn’t. When you actually talk to a lot of experts, who have amazing Information Products, they are not very technical at all. Information Products are easy to make and if I can do it, I know you can too! Expensive? This was another major reason for me not moving forward. However with research, I soon discovered that a lot of the products are relatively inexpensive. I was always thinking “Am I going to need to spend thousands of dollars to get this product up and running?” This is just not the case at all. There are a lot of free options out there, where there is no charge for the base model and as you require more functions, each tier will be a little more expensive. This is a great way to experiment with a variety of products before investing. Many also offer a free trial version too. Pricing? It’s a great idea to create Information Products at different price points. For example you can create a fantastic webinar series based © SHEentrepreneur 2011

on your expertise. The market value for really good ones, by well known experts is $97. If I don’t know the expert or facilitator, then it is unlikely that I’m going to take a $97 chance on a webinar with them. But, if they were offering something that was $29.95, then I might be likely to take a $29.95 chance. However, if I downloaded your free product and loved it, then I might jump into investing the $97 straight up. See how valuable your free product can be for building new relationships with customers. Having products at different price points in your sales funnel will allow you to build relationships with your customers and more importantly, EARN THEIR TRUST.

What is a Sales Funnel?
In order for people to buy from you, a customer must first like and trust you. You achieve this by ‘relationship marketing’ — building a relationship with your customer. You start by giving away a freebie such as a newsletter, special report, educational video or blueprint like this one. In return, they give you their name and email address and enter into your marketing ‘funnel.’ As your new customers read your blog, they will get to know you. If they like what you say, before long they might start buying small products. It’s a good idea therefore to also have lower priced, more affordable options for new customers. The sales funnel, just to explain, begins wide at the top, because many people will accept the freebie you offer. Some of them may then decide to become customers and buy your mp3 or CD for $19.95. As the prices get higher, smaller numbers of people will buy more expensive products. But you need to create a wide funnel of potential customers to find the few who will eventually buy your higher priced items and become long term customers. Let’s just say you are a sales trainer and a potential new customer, Sally, visits your sales website. Sally sees your welcome video and listens to a short audio on how to overcome her fear of sales. Sally likes what she sees and hears and is interested enough to hand over © SHEentrepreneur 2011

her name and email details, in exchange for your free document, How to Successfully Sell Yourself – A Guide For Mums New to Working From Home. Sally reads your free document and has a few ‘ah ha’ moments while doing so, as you have provided some great advice to get her started. She also receives your welcome message and thinks that you sound very understanding and supportive. A week later, your automated service – (that you have to only set up once) sends her out a tip on overcoming an objection on the phone. Next week you have programmed into your email sequence, an article on how to write a 3 minute elevator pitch about business, so she will be well prepared when attending networking events. By week 3 of signing up, Sally has got to know you a little and trusts you more now, as you have been providing her with great content already. In week 4 you send out an email with another valuable tip for setting up appointments after a networking event. You have at the bottom, a special offer for an mp3 you have just recorded on benefit selling. Sally is keen and as the investment is only $19.95. This is low risk for her and she is happy to take a chance and purchases the product. Sally (of course) loves the mp3 and thinks it is great value. The next week she receives another free tip and the cycle continues. Can you see how this could lead to Sally signing up for your one on one coaching work or perhaps become a member of your success club membership? It sounds like a lot of work, but remember you are only doing the work once and everyone who signs up for your newsletter or free downloadable document is getting the same personalised experience! Just to give you an example, this is what an active and profitable Sales Funnel will look like. I’d like you to think about what else you could be doing and offering to get people into the sales funnel on your website. © SHEentrepreneur 2011

Multiple Streams of Income
Without a doubt, one thing that will transform your business is creating multiple streams of income and product creation is a really important part of this. Let’s look at my business. Initially I had one stream of income, networking events. You can see below how I progressed from this. Please remember that each new form of income does not replace the former, but is an added extra and keeps building on from this. • Ticket sales from networking events • Ticket sales from masterclasses • Individual writing coaching with Brisbane Woman members • Copywriting revenue and coaching • Advertising revenue from Enews • Affiliate commissions with experts from networking events • Affiliate commission from experts from masterclasses • Product sales from online modules • Ticket sales from online masterclass • Affiliate commission from experts from online masterclasses • SHEentrepreneur mentoring program and monthly membership fees • Individual sales of online learning modules • Diamond coaching with mentoring members • Advertising revenue from SHEentrepreneur website © SHEentrepreneur 2011
59
You can see how this has built up from one small income stream into multiple streams. The most important thing to remember is that once you produce online products, you have something to offer other experts with a database. More interestingly, experts will start approaching you, as they are looking for joint ventures and also new ways of providing extra value to their databases. Online products not only set you up as ‘the’ expert with your customers but also your PEERS. The reality is, if you don’t have products and/or an online program to sell, many other business owners and entrepreneurs will not consider joint venturing with you.

AUDIO PRODUCTS
Let’s start with something simple Getting your expertise into an audio format can be achieved quickly and inexpensively. You could use an audio product for a welcome message on your website or to create a free mp3 to send to your customers as a value add. I trust you downloaded mine on page 6! The first step may be as simple as recording a conference call with other business owners and discussing some practical success tips that might have helped you, for example. Let’s just say your business is as a Professional Organiser and your target audience is small business owners who become unproductive in their home office. Why not get together some other business owners and talk about the challenges small business owners have with organising their home office and working from home. Of course throughout the call you can offer heaps of practical tips and strategies for small business owners. Now you can record this and create an mp3 or CD for your customers. be? Other business owners are always willing to support each other and you only need a group of 2-3 to get this product off the ground. Then you could do another call focussing on their area of expertise. Within a few hours, you all have a product. At the very least you should be able to find someone who will interview you and record the call. This is exactly how I got my first audio product – from a recorded interview. I was very well prepared for the interview because I was really hoping to be able to use it as an audio product afterwards. I was pleasantly surprised at how well I came across in the interview at the time and it gave me the confidence to start approaching other experts, knowing that I could provide value to their database. I spent a lot of time rehearsing the first one, but once I did it the first time, the work was done and I still use that same core document today. Now when an interview is coming up, I send through the questions that I would like the interviewer to ask me and refer back to that document to refresh my memory and get focussed on the outcome or message I want to share. After I completed my first interview, the recorded interview was sent to me as an mp3. I then went in and edited it slightly, just to delete the promotional blurb about the interviewer’s business and an event I was promoting as this was no longer relevant to the new listeners who downloaded it. I did this by uploading and editing the audio in Camtasia (more on this program later) and when I was happy with it, I put it up on my website! I then had that audio transcribed into a downloadable PDF document for members who preferred written material. I have also used the content of that interview in my Ebooks and articles – it has been an invaluable reference material for me. See how doing the work once can save you time over and over again? How Will I Know What People Want? Well this part is easier than you think. You can send out a survey to your database. Or think about the type of questions you are asked © SHEentrepreneur 2011

most often. One of the clients I was working with on their Intellectual Propert (IP) with was a Virtual Asistant (VA). I started asking my members and people at networking events, why they don’t use a VA (as I knew many were small business owners who needed help, but couldn’t yet afford full time staff). It was fascinating to hear the responses and they varied from the business owner not being exactly sure what a VA does, to thinking a VA was someone dodgy overseas who was going to steal their database. If you’ve worked with a VA (and I have both in Australia and overseas) you’ll know that nothing could be further from the truth. Therefore we decided our interview was going to target small business owners and raising the awareness of what a VA could do to support them. Some topics we thought business owners might be interested in were: • What exactly is a VA? • What does a VA do? • How can a VA be as trustworthy as an administration assistant in your office? • How can a VA support my business? • How do you monitor the work of a VA? • How do I develop a good working relationship with someone virtually? By brainstorming these questions, you will start to generate more content than you can put in your audio recording. Once you have this list – simply organise them into a more logical flow and you have your flow ready to go. I would put them in the following order, for example, and I’ve added a few new ones too. • What exactly is a VA? © SHEentrepreneur 2011
63
• What does a VA do? • What frustrations do you have as a business owner managing time? • How much of your day is consumed with administration tasks that someone else could be doing for you? • How can a VA help your business? • How expensive is a VA? • Is a VA trustworthy? • How do I develop a good working relationship with someone who I don’t meet face to face? This just seems to flow much better. Do you get the idea? Now you can do the same for your area of expertise! List some of the questions, concerns, misconceptions and objections that you hear regularly from your customers. √ √ √ √ √ √ √ √ √ © SHEentrepreneur 2011

Once you have your audio product, as with your Ebook – take the time to set up a proper sales or landing page. Then promote, promote, promote! Let people know your product is out there, by advertising on your website and blog. Think about how you could turn this into a CD. Look at the success of audio programs to date. Anthony Robbins and Robert Kyiosiki of Rich Dad Poor Dad fame, come to mind. These guys have sold millions of dollars worth of audio. Put a work book with it and you can sell it for a higher price as an online program or a home study program. What audio products could you create? My example: Audio Product: Interview with Liz Raad from How to Buy and Sell a Business who I met recently.
Action: (What do I need to do, to make this happen?) • Investigate her site and area of expertise. How relevant is this to my database? • Make a list of 5 topics I will cover in the interview and check Liz is okay with them. • Ask her to also email me any questions she would like me to ask. Schedule a time for the interview in the next 2 weeks. • Send Liz an invite. • Have a practice run the day before. • Get my sales page set up, so recording can go up directly after the interview.

It’s your turn now! Audio Product: Action Steps:
Let’s see how easy it is:
With Audacity YOU are doing the recording yourself. It is an audio editor and recorder for recording, slicing and mixing audio. If you decide to interview someone or a few people, keep reading as we’ll show you soon the best software to use for this too. Go to http://audacity.sourceforge.net to download your free copy.

Once you’ve done the test run, lock in a time and create your own audio product. You might decide to not use anyone else and simply record a welcome message or record your Ebook so it becomes a download too. Do you know how often I download information and put it on my ipod to listen to when exercising in the morning? I just downloaded Seth Godin’s book Tribes: We Need You To Lead Us. If it works for Seth, it will work for you too! Whatever you decide, the most important step is getting started.

TELESEMINARS
Teleseminars are a great way to promote your business’s products, services or to educate your clients and customers about a specific topic. It is one of the fastest, easiest and most economical ways to increase your sales and establish your credibility in your subject area. The way it works, is that everyone calls into a bridge line. The bridge line allows everyone to connect and hear each other. Most conferencing services have it set up where you, as the moderator, have control over muting the call or not. If the call is muted, then only the moderator can speak. If the call isn’t muted, then anyone can speak. Teleseminar or teleconference calls can last from 30 minutes to 3 hours, depending upon the type of teleseminar. Some teleseminar services will record the call. Once again you have another mp3 recording to share with your database or you could decide to get it converted into a CD. Some Other Ideas for Your Teleseminar: Guest Experts Who would be in the top 10 list of ‘go-getters’ in your industry? These are the people that everyone watches to see what they’re doing next. I’m asking, because if you could get access to one of those people as a guest on your teleseminar, how valuable would that be for both your © SHEentrepreneur 2011

existing clients and your potential customers? Remember, the first objective when you’re presenting a teleseminar is to provide value to your audience upfront, start relationship building and generating rapport. People will be impressed that you’ve been able to introduce them to a market leader. And the thing about successful people is that they’re usually very happy to share how they became successful. In fact, successful people have usually already learned that packaging up their IP can be very valuable to others. Chances are they’ll be able to deliver good teleseminar content and be interested in being introduced to your database for free. This will give them the opportunity to make an offer to a new audience - through someone who already has a relationship with them ... YOU. You may also be able to negotiate a very good percentage of any sales that result from your guest’s offer as well. For Joint Ventures, it is typical that you receive 50% of all sales. This is how easy it is. To get started, go to: http://www.freeconferencecalling.com This service will allow you to record yourself or do an interview with up to 500 listeners. • Sign up now and create an account. It takes less than 5 minutes to activate. You’ll need to have an overseas calling card which you can buy from your local newsagent. There are heaps of easy to follow instructions on using an overseas calling card. I simply did a few pretend teleseminars, to get the feel for it. When you finish your recording, you will have your product ready to go. This system does it all for you. It tells you the conference is over © SHEentrepreneur 2011

so then you go over to the recording session. Sometimes this can take up to hour to convert but other times it happens straight away. You can now download this, podcast it and make it public. I could offer it as a freebie on my website to entice my new customers, send it out to my loyal existing customers or sell it. Either way I am adding value and helping my database in some way and reaching a far wider audience than before.

Webinars
Running a webinar is one of the most effective ways to promote your business and to demonstrate to your database what you do know! Although webinars involve a few more steps than some of the other forms of media, they are DEFINITELY WORTH THE EFFORT. The beauty of webinars is that because it is a mix of audio and visual, it also provides a fruitful learning environment for your customers too. You can easily transfer over any material from your workshops or face to face consults, into an online webinar format. I was able to tap into a whole new market using webinars. The main challenge is getting over the technical stress but once you have a handle on this, then it is smooth sailing. When I was running my Masterclasses locally, the most I could manage would be 20 business owners. With a webinar service I have had up to 90 female entrepreneurs on the call. It takes some marketing to get those numbers, but I was still doing the same amount of work whether I had 20 face to face customers or 90 on a webinar. Which is better for my business? It’s a no brainer really! I use GotoWebinars – which costs about $100 a month. They are a little bit more expensive but they are top quality in terms of reporting and functionality. They also allow you to do live surveys throughout the webinar, which is another great interactive function. © SHEentrepreneur 2011
71
Another system which has been highly recommended to me is Instant Teleseminar. This service is only about half the price ($50 monthly) and you can also use a PowerPoint presentation to guide you. The only reason I didn’t join up with them is that it seemed a little trickier to understand technically and didn’t allow (easily) the swapping of screens between presenters, which I need. I like to swap between screens to make our webinars more interactive for our members. Being an experienced presenter from my teaching and training days, I didn’t find the transition from facilitating a workshop to a webinar very challenging at all. My main goal in adapting my workshops to webinars was to make the slides more visually stimulating and to still include a lot of interaction with my audience, which I have been able to do. Don’t take my word for it! Here are some testimonials to demonstrate just how effective webinars can be as a learning vehicle. They are also a great business development strategy as from this webinar, I was able to up sell attendees into my Ebook coaching program. I had purchased a ‘How to Write an Ebook’ product and started writing my Ebook before I partipated in on Kylie’s Webinar on the same topic. From Kylie I got more useful information than in the product I had bought. Kylie gave me lots of very practical ideas for enhancing the chapters I had already written and making them more relevant and appealing to my target market. I am feeling a lot happier and more inspired. I will definitely be booking into more Webinars with Kylie and look forward to taking up her offer of coaching too. Margaret Simms, Your Future Direction

If writing your book is your secret passion but you just don’t know how, then this is the webinar for you! I’ve had my book inside me for many years but have found the task of writing quite daunting. Due to a lack of know-how and structure and a healthy dose of self doubt, my book is still inside me. Not only did this webinar provide the framework and content for a well written and presented Ebook, it gave me faith in myself and my ability. This webinar helped me to chunk down the exercise of writing. Kylie kept it simple and concise, relatable and full of helpful tips. Her knowledge in this area is evident and her delivery style is one of ease. She covered many areas and answered my many questions. It really is the Ebook webinar for dummies! Thanks Kylie I look forward to taking action and the next step... Kind regards, Amanda Taylor. Certified Life Coach
Thanks Kylie for a great Ebook webinar. I got so much out of it. As I’m writing my own Ebook, it was extremely valuable information that you shared. I now have lots of places to go to do research and I know I will be sharing my Ebooks with the world very soon. I am looking forward to your next webinar. Michelle Springett, Designing M Style

I’ve been a journalist so I thought I had a fair idea of how to tackle an Ebook, but Kylie’s webinar went way beyond what I was thinking. It was extremely thorough, with lots of structure and great suggestions for creating a publication that people will want to read. If I follow Kylie’s outline I know I’ll produce something far better than I otherwise would have. Dr Rhonda Anderson, Fit and Well
Thanks so much for the Ebook webinar. It was incredibly useful in helping me to take what seemed like such a daunting task and giving me specific steps to follow to make my Ebook a reality. Helen Thomas, The Little Sage

ONLINE PROGRAMS
Online programs are without a doubt one of the best things you can do for your business. I have mentioned this before - it also opens up so many opportunities to joint venture with other entrepreneurs and earn some great affiliate commissions. More importantly, like having a book published, an online training program will set you up as the authority within your industry. Just by taking the step and getting an online program completed and on your website, will make such a huge difference to your professional credibility and will put you way ahead of your competition. If you have run a workshop before or have even done some individual work with a client, it is not hard to transition this to an online program. Believe me - I had a mental block to this for some time, thinking that the learning outcomes would be different, less powerful in some way. Let me just clarify a few things. • Online training can and will produce as good, if not better results than a face to face workshop. • As long as there is some support (email, phone, forums etc) your customers will feel like they are getting one on one support Š SHEentrepreneur 2011

from you or your team, as ALL their questions are responded to and do not get lost in group discussions. • Your customers can work at their own pace. Instead of having to keep up with the group or get bored covering the areas they are already competent with, your customers can work through at their own pace. • I love being able to go back to areas that I am finding more challenging over and over again. Sometimes, if you are not implementing the learning straight away, it is easy to forget the information. Instead of having to rummage through a pile of dusty manuals, you can go back and watch the training with ease. I know this is the feedback I have had from SHEentrepreneur members, time and time again. • You are only doing the work ONCE and getting paid forever! You are still actively involved, helping participants with questions through email support, forums, Facebook groups etc. The beauty is that you decide how much time you’ll spend in this area or you can train a staff member to assist with this. • If you can use PowerPoint, then you can put together an online program. Trust me on this one, it’s technically much easier than you could imagine. Thanks to fantastic tools like Camtasia and Screenflow, you just need your PowerPoint slides and these programs will record your screen and your voice. It feels like you are sitting next to the participant and explaining the content to them individually. Have a look at what this amazing software can do for your business.

Facebook - Tips and Strategies
The value of Facebook as a business tool is largely misunderstood by many female entrepreneurs. There are now over 8 million users alone in Australia, so consider the reality of what this means for you as a business owner and tap into this potential market! Many of these users are probably your customers so think about how you can connect with your customers on Facebook and harnessing this powerful tool. Up until recently, Google AdWords was considered the most effective form of internet marketing and for attracting quality traffic. There is definitely still a place for Google AdWords, however, the introduction of Facebook has introduced an alternate avenue to promote your business and advertise very affordably – one that also allows you to target more specifically with regard to the age, gender, and interests of your audience. So have a look at whether this might be of interest for your business too. Your Personal Profile Your personal profile is the best place to start building relationships on Facebook. Some women in business might feel uncomfortable about using Facebook to promote their businesses. However Facebook Š SHEentrepreneur 2011

now is such a powerful marketing and relationships building machine, that if you aren’t on there, you will get left behind. The first step is making sure you have a great, professional and friendly head shot of yourself – preferably with a big, warm smile. Also try to fill out as much detail about yourself as possible on your personal profile, as people will often look over your profile to understand a little more about the ‘person’ behind the brand and to see if they feel any synergy with you. It could be a simple thing like listening to the same music, books or perhaps the pages you have chosen to ‘like’. This might seem a little weird in business, but remember – it’s all about connecting with people online and building relationships. Any connection you can spark is great! Once you’ve completed this, think about who you are going to target on Facebook. Are any of your mentors on there? Send them a friend request and start adding some of their friends too. Make sure you always include a personal note, this is very important. Here’s an example: Hey Julia, I see we are both friends with the lovely Michelle Green. I’d love to connect with you too. Cheers, Kylie Check to see if any of your competitors are on Facebook also. This is a great way to keep abreast of what they are doing and generally what is happening in your niche. Don’t worry, your competitors will ‘friend’ you too – it’s very common practice. You’ll also find that your competitors Facebook friends, will likely also be potential customers for you. This way you can also start forming connections with them too. It also works both ways, now you can see that they are doing too. Join Groups – Do a search and join groups on Facebook that are relevant to your niche. This is such a perfect way to connect with like minded people. Just remember that you have the potential to build a list of 5000 contacts on Facebook through your personal profile. © SHEentrepreneur 2011
79
Now for anyone who is trying to grow their database, 5000 can take a long time to build up, so take advantage of this. Be very targeted in your friend requests and acceptance. I learnt the hard way that it is not always in my best interest to accept everyone who sends me a request. It’s easy at first to think that it’s about the number of friends you have, but is actually about the quality of relationships you can build in the future. On your personal profile, it’s fine to incorporate a mix of personal and business but you need to be always be mindful of brand ‘YOU’. Remember, your personal profile is prime business online real estate and you don’t want to create anything but a positive impression of your business. Some people prefer to keep their business page and personal profile totally separate and will not accept friend requests from people they don’t know. Although I understand this, I feel it’s a wasted new business opportunity. I have over 3500 friends on Facebook at the time of writing The SHEentrepreneur Ultimate Success Blueprint and my Facebook friends have brought in a huge amount of new business for me! Your personal profile allows you to start building effective relationships and is an opportunity that should not be missed, in my opinion. It is great fun attending events and meeting your ‘Facebook’ friends face to face too. From a business perspective, I now market my online events through my business page and my personal profile. I am able to send out over 3500 invites for each online event I have to my Facebook friends. What a lost opportunity it would be if I only allowed people I knew to be on my friend’s list. Seriously – think about this and what the potential of 5000 friends and customers could do for your business. One of the biggest mistakes people make in social media is too much marketing and YES I have definitely been guilty of this myself in the past. Remember you are setting yourself up as the expert and the authority in your industry, so it’s really important that you are © SHEentrepreneur 2011

adding value to the person you are friends with. They should feel like being friends with you is helping them in some way and that you are making their life just a little bit more fun. I always try to stick to the 80/20 rule, 80% content and relationship building and 20% marketing. To get the relationship going, it’s important that you start communicating with your friends. If you want Facebook interaction, you need to start interacting first. Start commenting on what other people are saying and you’ll be surprised how quickly they will start commenting back on your posts too. Don’t forget the ‘like’ button, this is quick and easy but shows support and interest. The DON’TS on Facebook: • Swearing • Spamming everyone. Two out three of your posts should be content related and only one marketing. • Complaining, venting or appearing negative. This is now a professional forum for you and your business. I’m constantly surprised by how aggressive people are on Facebook and how they go to battle when someone does not support what they are saying, often getting into arguments and making personal attacks. This might be gratifying at the time of frustration but DOES NOT SERVE YOU WELL long term or do your brand any favours. • Friending experts, guru’s or anyone with a huge list of friends and then posting on their wall (without permission), hoping to get your post read by their thousands of friends. One of the best things I learnt on Facebook was organising my friends into lists. This has been really helpful with targeting my communication. Facebook is becoming more and more spammy, there is no doubt. Your Facebook friends will soon become frustrated if you are sending them invites for events or promotions that are not © SHEentrepreneur 2011

relevant to them. For example, I stopped being friends with someone who was constantly sending me invites to Personal Trainer events. I’m not a PT, why would I want to get invites for things that were not relevant to me at all? I’m sure many others did the same thing. Your Business Page Facebook is now an integral part of any savvy businesses marketing strategy. If you’re in business and you haven’t set up a Fan Page then you’ll be really surprised at how easy it is. Perhaps you’ve thought about setting up a page but don’t know where to begin. To start with you can set one up yourself although I think it’s also worth paying someone to do it, depending on your budget. You can get a professional page set up for around $500 and you can really tell the difference. However, if you can’t afford that right now, don’t worry you can still have a successful and engaging fan page without getting it professionally done. What is really important is how you build relationships and the information you share with your ‘likers’ or ‘fans’. Remember, if you only promote your business and don’t share meaningful content, people will soon tire of this and won’t be interested fans for too long. Facebook is very funny about anyone posting too many links, so make sure you are posting status updates regularly, without attaching links all the time too. You can also include great videos to upload or share. Perhaps there is something exciting happening at your work, or in the industry. You can also share jokes and quotes. Asking questions is a great way to get conversation going too. Read what other people are posting, you will soon get the hang of it. Converting People Over to Your Fan Page A great strategy, once you have become friends with someone on Facebook – is to invite them to ‘like’ your business page. A simple

message saying you’ve enjoyed getting to know them and would they be interested in supporting your business page too, is nice and polite. People often just post in the main stream asking people to ‘like’ them which seems to work okay when you are starting out for support, but not so much when you are established. With your business page, it’s important to stay on message. Think about your brand and your mission with each post you write. It’s appropriate to put some posts about you in there but make sure that the majority are related to your business or area of expertise. Remember you are setting yourself up as the expert in your niche, so provide interesting and varied content to your followers as much as possible. Joining Group Discussions If you go to the top right side of your profile and go to use Facebook as a Page, you can go into groups of interest and start communicating as your Business Page, rather than using your personal profile. This means you are getting your business and branding right in front of your target audience. For example I would go into groups about women in business or small business owners and start making comments and asking questions, perhaps putting up some posts and sharing content of value – all of this done as SHEentrepreneur and not Kylie Welsh. This way every time I make a comment or post something of interest, everyone in the group will see my business name. Now, it’s very likely that other business owners who see my comments and like what I’ve got to say, are going to click through to my business page to find out more about me. I’m not selling anything at this stage, just providing value and building relationships. This is a great way to raise your professional profile on Facebook, build relationships and potentially get new likers to your business page. Give it a go, you’ll be surprised at how well it works!

To Twitter or Not to Twitter?
The rate of Twitter growth has been phenomenal in the last 12 months, to the point that there are now in excess of 50 Million messages being sent every day on the site and nearly 2 million unique users in Australia. Dell Computing itself made a record 4 million dollars from Twitter in the last financial year. As a business owner you may not be convinced or are completely confused about how to leverage Twitter. Well you are going to love the TIME EFFICIENCY of this powerful business tool. Twitter is great and also a very effective business development tool. Twitter is a very important part of your social media profile so don’t forget to use this as much as you can also. You can use Twitter very effectively to build relationships and grow your database too. To get you started: Your Twitter name: Please choose this carefully. It takes time to develop a list of loyal followers so make sure you take the time to select a name that is not going to be a fad. Remember your Twitter Š SHEentrepreneur 2011

name is an all important part of your branding. You’ll be surprised how quickly your following will grow and you don’t want to have to change this and lose your followers. • It’s important to have a nice photo, again preferably a professional head shot with a big smile. This will go a long way. • You’ve only got 140 characters, so use these words wisely and try and write as succinctly as you can. • Background – there are many ways you can make this look great without having to pay someone to do this for you. Once again it is really important to align your Twitter account to your business branding. If you go into settings, then select edit, you’ll see some of the options. Try to stay away from what everyone else is doing and come up with something a little bit unique. You can use your logo as a tile or a picture and repeat this over and over too.
Twitter language you need to understand: • RT=retweet (this is where you retweet tweets that you think may be of interest to your followers) • @ replies (If you want to reply to someone else’s tweet, you put @ in front of their Twitter name and it will tag then.) For example, if you wanted to reply to one of my tweets, you would say ‘@SHEentrepreneur Yes, me too! I found this with my video.’ • #(hashtag) People use hash tags to follow conversations. Everyone who tweets about the topic will include the correct hashtag, so you just can keep track by using the search function and typing in the relevant has tag. For example during our floods, we call all follow the latest tweets by following the hashtag #QLDfloods

• FollowFriday #FF These are people you recommend others to start following. It is a great compliment and whoever you #FF will be very grateful. • DM=Direct Message. Instead of going public with all your communication, you can DM other Tweeters and it will go to their inbox, rather on the main stream for everyone to see. Think about how this will fit in with your social media profile. What type of image do you want to have online? What is it that you want to be known for? I want to be known as the expert for women in business. I want my website to be a resource for women so I make sure there is fresh content regularly, not only as a tool to attract new women, but also to keep visitors coming back. Everything I do in social media reflects my expert status in this niche. • Sign up to Google alerts and start getting articles from around the world on your area of expertise. Share this with your followers across all forms of social media. • Ask questions here too. • When Brisbane had the floods, I put a question on Facebook and Twitter re. signing up and volunteering to help. I could not believe how fast the responses were on Twitter. I had 20 responses in 2 minutes! • Respond to what other people are saying. This is a quick and effective relationship building tool, but also it means that others will start responding to you. • Retweet others’ tweets. This is another great way for you to get relationships happening and show support for other people on Twitter. Remember to retweet content or events that somehow link in with your brand. Everything still needs to be part of the same core message. For example with my brand SHEentrepreneur, I will retweet topics to do with women, empowerment and business. That is a wide umbrella © SHEentrepreneur 2011
86
so I can be flexible but I don’t want to retweet information that will water down my brand in the market.

Linked in Or Linked out?
Did you know - an email sent via LinkedIn has 72% more chance of being opened, read and actioned? Email statistics indicate that 25% is a successful readership rate for email marketing and most business aim for 20%. Just imagine what a 72% readership rate could mean for your business! Why is LinkedIn so powerful? • It has more than 75 million members in 200 countries, and one million businesses • A new member joins LinkedIn approximately every second • Everyone from top CEOs to Fortune 500 Executives have a LinkedIn account Businesses use LinkedIn to drive conversations with clients and prospects, increase brand awareness, build online creditability and hire great staff. LinkedIn is a great way to connect with other professionals. It isn’t a numbers game though and you cannot link with people unless you know them. Playing in LinkedIn requires a more serious approach, so you’ll need to adapt your communication style to suit this. It’s pretty straight forward to go in and set up a LinkedIn Profile. Once you are there, follow the instructions and in no time you will © SHEentrepreneur 2011

have a professional profile. Take the time to fill out it properly, so that it really reflects you and your brand. I half set mine up and then was busy on Facebook and Twitter for a few months before coming back to it. Unfortunately by that time my profile had been viewed by hundreds of people and had typos etc all the way through it – how embarrassing is that? So learn from my mistake. Once you have a profile on LinkedIn, people will start connecting with you, so make sure your profile reflects your branding well. One of the great things you can do first up, is start providing professional recommendations on LinkedIn for the people you know. What a great way to pay it forward and it means that it is likely that you’ll get people starting to write recommendations for you too. A word of warning, don’t ask people who you don’t know well or have not worked with for a professional recommendation. I often get people asking me who I don’t know at all – or perhaps I have met them once. It is not great and I had to learn to say NO. You can promote and advertise on LinkedIn also. LinkedIn is also a great tool for when you want to recruit new staff. LinkedIn Staff will allow you to post your job, search for appropriate candidates and your contacts can forward this on also for you. Without a doubt one of the strongest functions of LinkedIn is groups. It’s great to join groups of interest and start discussions in them. You start by just searching groups with your key words and seeing what groups are available and then requesting to join them. You can now share your articles and start discussion thus raising your profile and building credibility. This is one way of reputation building on LinkedIn. There is also a question and answer section where you can connect with other experts too.

Automating is Key Once you have all your social media set up, make sure you integrate these so you are not spending hours on social media each day. You can use an online tool like Postperous and link up all your social media profiles. This means you only have to post the content once and it will then go to Facebook, Twitter, LinkedIn, your blog and RSS feed. The best thing to do with social media is get on there and give it a try. You will be surprised to see the results – honestly. Remember your brand, it’s message and that you are the authority and expert. Just remember to stay on message with this, in all your social media communication and have fun along the way.

PUBLIC SPEAKING
Speaking is another powerful tool that you can use, to set yourself as the expert and authority in your niche. If you see live VIDEO footage of someone speaking at an event, what does that say to you about that person? Yes, an authority – they know enough about their area of expertise to be invited to speak on the topic. New customers can also see what you look like, what you are wearing, how you sound and how you connect with an audience. Step 1 Do some research and make a list of all the local networking and business groups in your area. As I mentioned before, I guarantee they will ALL be looking for great speakers in a variety of areas. Have a look at their past events and check out what they have got coming up. Approach them and ask if they would be interested in finding out more about your speaking services. If you’ve got some live footage or testimonials send them through. Some of the members of SHEentrepreneur have been pleasantly surprised by how much success they’ve had in this area. You won’t know until you give it a try and boy, will you be surprised! Step 2 Check out online too. You can make heaps of meaningful connections online. Do Google searches for online events in your area of expertise, © SHEentrepreneur 2011

approach the organisers and offer to speak for free. Check on Facebook too. There are so many events going around on Facebook so try connecting with the organisers from these too. Step 3 Prepare a couple of talks - I would suggest initially a 30 minute speech. Then you can do two longer versions of this base talk. Now if you are not very experienced at public speaking, I'd suggest getting a speaking mentor or doing some speaker training. I attended Toastmasters for 3 years when I lived in Melbourne. It was great for my confidence and really helped me develop public speaking skills. There is also heaps of information available on creating a powerful presentation and make sure you spend time crafting this. My Public Speaking Tips include: • Bring in your personal story – this is a powerful way to connect with your audience. • Be authentic in your story and the way you communicate. It’s easy to see a great speaker and copy their style but this will not serve you well long term. Experiment with your style but remember to be your true self always. • The opening of your presentation is very important and I would recommend you learn the first 2-3 minutes verbatim. The first few minutes you get up and speak are the most nerve wracking. If you can get through these without being overcome by nerves, the rest of your speech will flow. • Don’t include too many statistics and data. A little is okay, but people will soon switch off from this. • Like a great article or story – a good talk has 3 sections – a powerful introduction, strong body and compelling conclusion. • Always have a Call to Action at the end of your talk. At the very © SHEentrepreneur 2011

least you want people to come and have a look at your website. I think having something they can fill out on the night works wonders too. People will be most inspired to take action after they hear you speak, so take advantage of this, especially if you are trying to sell your products or services. Have a form with payment options that they can complete at the event. • Have a special offer just for the specific event too. Folks always like a special promotion being put together, just for them. • If you are considering speaking for income generation as part of your business model, then I suggest you undertake some speaker training. There is a real art form to speaking on stage and getting sales. Speaker training is not cheap but worth the investment if you are serious about this. Professional speaker training usually requires an investment of between $3000 to $5000 dollars. • Know your material really well. Practice, practice and practice. Some people will recommend not learning it off by heart. I don’t think that it’s a bad thing when you are just starting out at all. It certainly calms your nerves! • Don’t print the whole speech off, just the first sentence of each paragraph. I can tell you from first-hand experience, if you’re nervous – you’ll read it word for word. If you only have a few pointers to follow – this will stop you doing this. Remember, learning it off by heart will calm your nerves and help the words flow. • Make sure you find out who your audience will be. Ask the organisers for specifics about age, sex, income - the usual demographics. Check the promotional material too, so you are sure how the event is being advertised. Check that you cover all of the areas mentioned in the invite. • Arrive early and/or have a practice run a few days before, just to ensure your equipment works. looking around the room with the microphone in your hand, so when you are arrive on the day, there are no surprises and you know what to expect. • Eye contact is important. Remember to scan the room and look people in the eye. • Use some visuals for engagement – PowerPoint is fine, as long as you don’t rely on this completely. There is nothing worse than seeing a presenter who is speaking to her PowerPoint presentation the whole time, instead of her audience. • Focus on YOUR message – we’ve already covered this in other areas but it is particularly important with public speaking. • Visualise how successful the speech will be – this will help calm your nerves. • I always practice and read the speech to a few people before hand. Practice makes perfect my mother used to say – and it’s true! It’s also invaluable to get some feedback from others. • Remember the power of the PAUSE. This works very effectively when you are trying to make a point. • Time your speech and make sure it is within the required time frame. There is nothing worse than a speaker going overtime. Your event organisers will not be very pleased and it might stop them inviting you back to speak again. • Remember, you have a great message to share with the world and now IS YOUR TIME to take inspired action to get your message out there.
