Photography is an interesting art form because of its vast capabilities from abstract depiction to precise documentation. It is able to capture and enhance the beauty of the real world like no other art form that preceded it. There are many different ways to learn photography, but not all ways are equal in value. Personally, I think that in order to master photography, you must learn 3 parts. Since it is a skill like any other, it should be approached similarly as well. However there is more than one conflict going on while learning a skill. There's the technical side, and a deeper inner conflict that may also prevent you from succeeding if not resolved or conquered. My father was a professional boxer when he was in his 20's. As I got a little older, I remember him teaching me certain positions, techniques, and so on. I also remember him telling me that learning only the technical side of any art will render you very mechanical and you will quickly fail or have many limitations to your skill. What he was trying to say is that your set of internal beliefs have to correspond to the goals you want to achieve. We always act accordingly to the way we think, so if one believes that he is a creative photographer, then sooner or later, his actions will start showing likewise. So the 3 parts to learning photography can defined as - technical, psychological and conceptual. The latter part combines the first 2 for a perfect fit, making you capable of thinking conceptually and turn any style of photography into fine art. Believe it or not, any of these parts can be learned, yet for some reason, not everyone takes the time to teach it. The Techniques - I call these your building blocks. Before a child knows how to walk, it must surely first learn how to crawl. These technical basics give you the ability to start crawling. You can learn this part by picking up any "How to Learn Photography" book and get started right away. The Internal Shift - If a person had always thought she was not talented or uncreative, then surely that belief will limit anyone's imaginative flow. So, take the time and start thinking of yourself as someone who is capable of whatever you put your mind to. I often bring up the quote by Henry Ford that said: "If you think you can do it, or if you think you can't, you are right." The Creative Integration - This final part is just as necessary as the previous two. At this point, you will have learned all your technical requirements and will have started thinking of yourself as someone who has no artistic limitations. But now what? This is the part that teaches you the expressive element behind your techniques. As a society, we have all been preconditioned to assign certain emotions to certain images. Some emotions were innate, and others imposed upon by our ways of life. Sergei Eisenstein, an old Russian filmmaker, wrote many things about these principles in his diary. He talked about diagonals that were able to produce a heavy vs. light feelings, certain curves that could act like a surprise, and much more. So, now that you know everything about Depth of Field, aperture, exposure, shutter speed, and everything else, you have
to realize that all of these things hold certain meaning and interpretation behind them. Therefore, you can start using them to your advantage and produce your desired effect. So, when you learn photography, make sure you don't stop after you've got down the technique. Most teachers will stop there, but now you know better. Use your photography as an artistic expression, and that surely does not depend on the size of your camera, nor just its functions!
