This journey started way back in Saudi Design Week 2017. I got this hint and it felt like everything is going to be alright!

CRITICAL REFLECTION

I started this journey with a sketch, I didn’t know what exactly I wanted to do but I was sure about one thing:

I Wanted to Express Myself.

12

13

CRITICAL REFLECTION

So, I decided to do random illustrations as stickers, Ms Nuha told me this is not enough! you can express yourself and show your style in any project just look for a solid subject and do whatever you want with it, then she asked some questions! What interest you? What do you like? out of nowhere I said GIRL EMPOWERMENT.

14

15

CRITICAL REFLECTION

Girl Empowerment is a very wide topic and I wanted to work on something I personally relate to. So, I came across a TedTalk video titled “Teach Girls Bravery, Not Perfection”. This video opened my eyes to a real problem that me personally

RATIONALE

Idea My senior project is a book called “BE BRAVE, NOT PERFECT”. It is an illustrated self-help guide to overcome perfectionism. By making this book my main goal was to challenge myself to get over this fear of wanting to be perfect. Perfectionism is a very wide subject, this is why my first book will be to overcome perfectionism in general, but I attend to to cover perfectionism in other aspects like beauty standers and body image. Originality Style and Illustrations. Objective My main goal is o empower women. Appropriation Based on studies women more likely to suffer from perfectionism, plus I personlay suffer from it and a lot of girls around me. So, I wanted to help them overcome it. Values Empowerment is helping each other to be the best we can be! “Real queens fix each other crowns”- Queen. Target Audience Women in general, Specifically from age 19-23.

RESEARCH

According to a study published in the Journal of Occupational and Organizational Psychology found that women are more likely than men to be perfectionists, holding themselves back from answering a question, applying for a new job, asking for a raise, until they’re absolutely 100 percent sure.

22

Approximately 30 percent of the general population suffers from perfectionism, but a 1999 study showed that 87 percent of "gifted" people were perfectionists—even then, though, only 30 percent of these gifted perfectionists were neurotic. Although a symptom of obsessive-compulsive personality disorder, neurotic perfectionism is different than straight-up OCD. Though an OCD sufferer has a compulsion that sometimes relieves an obsession, he or she knows that that behavior is “wrong” and irrational. The neurotic perfectionist believes the inverse: He thinks that in spite of the pain he’s enduring, his perfectionism is helping him reach standards he otherwise couldn’t. However, though I hope this article is the start of working and living in a way that’ll see me happier, who’s to say my will to be imperfect will be any stronger than my will to be perfect was? Even with this almost written, I still fear that I›ll break down and edit it until there’s nothing left. Only time will tell, and as cliched as that sounds, maybe if I can accept this—that some things in life can’t be predicted—I’ll find the strength at the end of this sentence to send out what I have in the hope that, somehow, someone likes it.

CASE STUDIES

1.Goodnight Stories For Rebel Girls

Is a children’s nonfiction books about women’s lives are a long overdue trend, and this empowering, resolutely “anti-princess” storybook is a very welcome addition. Initially funded by a 1$M Kickstarter campaign, the authors wrote it in response to the gender stereo-typing they found across children’s books and media. One hundred extraordinary women are profiled in mini biographies alongside striking full-page portraits by female artists.

24

From ancient philosophers to modern sports stars there is real richness to the nationalities, ethnicities and professions of these inspirational role models. Much of the charm is in the juxtapositions: queens sit alongside activists, ballerinas with lawyers, pirates and computer scientists, weight lifters and inventors, creating a thrilling sense of possibility. The biographies share a lyrical, fairytale lilt. “There was a time when only boys could be whatever they wanted,” in Hillary Clinton’s case. The stories are not sugar-coated, and the emphasis is on overcoming obstacles and persevering, the book’s dedication page urging readers to “dream bigger, aim higher, fight harder”. Beautiful production makes this a book to keep, treasure and read again, and the end pages are a call to arms: space for readers to write their own story and draw their own portrait. Essential reading for girls and indeed boys; children who read this at bedtime are guaranteed some big and inspirational dreams.

25

CASE STUDIES

2. OHH DEER Ohh Deer was founded by myself (Jamie Mitchell) and Mark Callaby in 2011, with the official launch of our website in the November of that year. Before Ohh Deer, Mark and I met at Kingston University (big-up Kingston!) where I was studying Architecture and Mark, Illustration. For a while I’d dreamed of creating a brand with gorgeous arty products (the kind of thing I’d like to buy), so in the evenings after working at our day jobs we beavered away developing the Ohh Deer blog. Slowly but surely we gained a following which gained momentum and not long after we started making our first products.

CASE STUDIES

3. Sophia Amoruso Within the last few years, many young women have experienced success by launching an idea that becomes a profitable venture. One example of this is Sophia Amoruso, founder of Nasty Gal. At 28 years old, Amoruso’s net worth is approximately 250$ million—not bad for a college dropout who turned an eBay site into a retail fashion powerhouse by using MySpace, Facebook, Twitter, and Instagram to build an obsessive fan base of over half a million followers on Facebook and more than 600,000 on Instagram. Over the last six years, Nasty Gal has done so well that it racked up gross margins of more than 60 percent and now the company is on its way to quadrupling sales to 128$ million in this fiscal year.

28

Amoruso’s bio reads like a book but is fantastic. Sophia Amoruso has always had the itch to do something and was very restless. So restless in fact that when she worked in retail at 22, and wanted to become a good photographer and thought about art school, but was bored with her everyday life as an ID-checker. She says that she started selling vintage clothing by accident. She always had an interest in vintage fashion and after rummaging through estate sales or thrift stores for merchandise, she took pictures of her friends posing in her clothes and posted listings on eBay. She sold a few pieces, used the money to flip some more merchandise and the cycle continued.

MYTHOLOGY

Method1. Mindmaps I always start with mindmaps it helps me realize what to do, and get all of my ideas out.

30

Method2. Double Dimond Divided into four distinct phases - Discover, Define, Develop and Deliver - the Double Diamond is a simple visual map of the design process and it’s very helpful to understand what phase are you in and what is next.

31

BOOK CONTENT

So I found this amazing guide on "how to overcome perfectionism" from a descent source, I summarized it and took what I thought is important in the book. The website is a leader in developing online, self-help, and evi -dence based resources on anxiety and anxiety disorders.

TYPEFACE

Ty p e f a c e 1.Helvetica Neue I choose the classic Helvetica Neue as my main typeface. Because, it is one of my favourite san-serif fonts, plus it is simple and go very well with my illustrations 2.Gloria Hallelujah This font is hand written and it looks like my actual hand writing which I used in the book and the poster. 3.My Hand
