GLASGOW CARGO COMMUNITY
Mind-map for an Inclusive and Selfsustaining Community
Why do people become Homeless ?
The first step of design started by understanding homelessness and how it has become an urban Generate Employment Within The Community
epidemic. The research led to a conclusion of various categories of homelessness and its causes in an urban context :
•
SITUATIONAL (due to loss of job, abuse, disaster like fire, circumstances of other person sharing the property, etc)
• •

CHRONIC CYCLICAL (lack of support from friends and family, financial difficulty, debt, difficulty in

community where the homelessness caused due to Situational and Cyclical reasons can be addressed as both these categories comprises close to 85% of total homeless population in Glasgow. It will provide temporary address for people who are failing to meet rent marginally, adolescents who had to leave home due to abuse and people

facing unexpected unemployment, as well as, for Support People in Emergency Crisis
people looking for short-term living arrangement. Suggested policy of rental period as minimum 1 month to maximum 1 year and possibility of employment within the community for adolescents from institutions.

Criteria for Site Selection : It’s a central location. Ease in transportation of Cargos due to proximity to Clyde River. Respects the historical value of shipbuilding heritage of Glasgow
GLASGOW CARGO COMMUNITY Introduction: The proposed project is a competition entry to RICS aiming at providing solution to current housing crisis and homelessness in Glasgow due to rapid urbanisation, unemployment, temporary crisis and rising rent of properties. The design solution involves a holistic approach of :
•
Site selection considering the character of Glasgow
• • •
Connectivity with the existing city Integration of users into society Adaptive re-use building material (shipping
Location : containers) which has proven to have low cost Situated along river Clyde. Upon vacant site compared to traditional building materials no. 542 & 643, availability as per Scottish govt Shipping Container as Building Material :
• •
Advantage of simplicity upon construction Ideal strength to withstand extreme weather condition
•
It is durable, available and transportable at low cost
• •
Adaptive re-use to satisfy a need for shelter Promotes sustainable construction technique through up-cycling of waste cargos Sourced from Internet

The objective of multiple site network analysis was to find the most optimum solution which will not compromise the occupancy level to below 250 and balance the connection between both the sites as an agglomeration without losing the identity of being independent sites.

personal deck space, shared units with cafeteria which is accessible by non-residents and provides employment opportunity to the residents. The last one are the single units with medium level rent and provides laundromat facilities run by the residents.
•
Occupancy - Mcalpine site has 93 number of occupancy and Carrick has 164, both including single and shared. A grand total of 257 homeless people can be accommodated as per the proposal.
•
Rent - Suggested two types of renting system can work out, per unit for single occupancies and per bed for shared.
•
Spaces - The site has been divided into zones (residents and non-residents) and then further into private, communal and service spaces

Conceptual Development
The idea is to create living units that offer higher personal space and privacy and to give the resident an opportunity to choose to mingle within the neighbourhood. This block is intended towards people in situational homelessness due to not being able to meet the rent hike or for people looking for short-term lets. TOWER BLOCK: Location : At the extreme end of both the sites, can be approached through the internal pedestrian/ cyclist road.
