Get behind the scenes of Sheffield Theatres Ever wondered what our theatres look like behind the curtains? Gain exclusive backstage access with one of our guided tours which explore both the Crucible and Lyceum Theatres. Tour dates are: Fri 25 January Fri 8 March Fri 24 May
Welcome We’re delighted to let you know about our spring season at Sheffield Theatres. It’s beyond thrilling that The Full Monty is coming home to Sheffield in February with our own production - the world premiere of a new stage version written by Simon Beaufoy, who wrote the hit film back in 1997.
All tours begin at 4.30pm and last approximately 75 minutes £5.00 Combine your tour with a two-course meal in Crucible Corner for only £19.00
We have two further world premieres in the season: Mike Bartlett’s, Bull, and, This is My Family, written specially for us by Tim Firth (the author of Calendar Girls). In the Crucible Theatre, D.H. Lawrence’s classic The Daughter-in-Law is directed by Paul Miller (Democracy), whilst The History Boys, a play that’s set in our city, takes to the stage in May. In the Lyceum we’re thrilled to welcome Blood Brothers, The Mousetrap, Propeller and Matthew Bourne - as well as Dolly Parton’s brand new musical 9 to 5! 2012 has been a fantastic year for us. Sheffield Theatres’ productions were seen in the West End and on the London fringe. We received four nominations for our shows in the Theatre Awards UK. Thank you for your continued support which allows us to maintain the quality of the work on our stages and ensure that the city remains at the forefront of the country’s cultural ecology.

But it’s strife at home that hurts all the more. After their long courtship the Gascoignes’ short honeymoon is well and truly over. Ambitious Minnie is still trying to disentangle miner Luther from his mother’s apron strings when a pre-marital dalliance makes a reappearance and blows the marriage apart. Will his mother have to pick up the pieces? Or will events at the pit decide all their fates for them? The bonds between a mother and her sons, between husband and wife, between desire and freedom, are stretched to breaking point. A classic. A landmark. A legend. To celebrate 60 incredible years on stage, it’s going on tour for the first time, complete with a star cast. The scene is set when a group of people gathered in a country house cut off by the snow discover, to their horror, that there is a murderer in their midst. Who can it be? One by one the suspicious characters reveal their sordid pasts until at the last, nerveshredding moment the identity and the motive are finally revealed. In her own inimitable style, Dame Agatha Christie has created an atmosphere of shuddering suspense and a brilliantly intricate plot where murder lurks around every corner.

With Ronnie O’Sullivan and Jimmy White
The Gruffalo’s Child
Thu 11 April 7.00pm
Fri 12 April – Sat 13 April
Two of the biggest names in snooker come together for a very special Snooker Legends exhibition, just one week before the 2013 championships take place.
From the makers of the hugely successful The Gruffalo comes The Gruffalo’s Child. One wild and windy night the Gruffalo’s child ignores her father’s warning and tiptoes out into the snow. After all, the Big Bad Mouse doesn’t really exist… does he?
World Snooker Champion, Ronnie ‘The Rocket’ O’Sullivan goes head to head with his great friend and former World Seniors Champion Jimmy ‘The Whirlwind’ White. At a recent meeting, Ronnie made a maximum 147 break.
Tall Stories returns, bringing Julia Donaldson and Axel Scheffler’s award-winnning sequel to life in this magical, musical adaptation.
Once again, John Virgo will be on hand to provide expert analysis and last year’s World Snooker Championship Final referee, Michaela Tabb, will officiate.
All adults must be accompanied by a responsible child. ‘Everything good children’s theatre should be’ The List

In a world of spin, BlackBerrys and ‘sexed up’ dossiers, the PM is staring disaster in the face. The country is on the brink of financial meltdown and the Government’s only apparent salvation comes from a morally dubious deal with the Foreign Minister of Kumranistan. Will Jim Hacker and his team of advisors be able to rescue the country from the edge? ‘The audience loved it. A hit’ ★★★★ Daily Mail ‘Jim Hacker and Sir Humphrey are back in truly vintage form. The Taming of the Shrew
‘I am not what I am’ Two disguised, competing suitors clamour for the hand of the beautiful Bianca, whilst gold-digging Petruchio agrees to wed her viciously ill-tempered sister Kate, sight-unseen. The difference between marrying for love and marrying for money, however, becomes increasingly difficult to judge. This brash, brutal and darkly comic story pulls no punches. A New Adventures Production
Matthew Bourne’s Sleeping Beauty Tue 21 – Sat 25 May Sleeping Beauty sees Matthew Bourne return to the music of Tchaikovsky to complete the trio of ballet masterworks that started with Nutcracker! and the international smash hit, Swan Lake. Our story begins at the christening of Princess Aurora in 1890, a time when fairies and vampires fed the gothic imagination, before moving forward in time to the modern day. Sleeping Beauty features designs by Olivier Award-winners Lez Brotherston (Set and Costumes) and Paule Constable (Lighting) as well as Sound Design by Paul Groothuis that will take the audience into the heart of Tchaikovsky’s magnificent score in specially recorded surround sound. Matthew Bourne’s haunting new production is a gothic romance for all ages; a supernatural love story that even the passage of time cannot hinder. ‘Demolishing convention, bestriding art forms from ballet to musical comedy to film, Bourne’s work isn’t just high-brow or low-brow. It’s all-brow’ Time Magazine

‘I’m a Jew. I’m small. I’m homosexual. And I live in Sheffield. I’m f**ked’.
Previews £10.00
A levels may be over, but for one set of unruly pupils, their education is far from finished. Back in lessons to train for entrance exams, the boys find themselves caught between two opposing styles of teaching. Eccentric Hector leads with a flamboyance that brings everything to life, while cynical Irwin’s been brought in by the Head to provide a ruthless route to Oxbridge. But with love, sex and university on their minds, the question is, will any of them make the grade? The History Boys by Alan Bennett is one of Britain’s favourite comedies, full of stunning one-liners and teenage anxieties.
