The season begins with two classics, Waiting For Godot and A Raisin In The Sun. The Studio will play host to some of the country’s most innovative theatre companies, while the Lyceum is packed with blockbusters from the musical, ballet and opera world. 2016 is an important year for Sheffield and we’re proud to be participating in the Year of Making - a city-wide initiative that celebrates Sheffield’s creativity in all its forms. Within these pages, we hope you’ll find something that will whet your appetite for live performance and we look forward to welcoming you through our doors soon. Birth. It’s the most natural thing in the world… isn’t it? So how have we managed to make it quite so complicated? Partus is not about conception. It’s not about pregnancy. Partus explores those ridiculous, terrifying, exhilarating moments when new people enter this world. Based on conversations with mothers, fathers, midwives and obstetricians, this partly verbatim show examines one of the most familiar yet mysterious aspects of humanity. ‘a company engaging with the big issues about how we live with a fierce intelligence’ The Guardian Studio Theatre Fri 7.45pm £9.00 Sat – Wed 7.45pm £14.00 Concessions £2.50 off Sat 2.00pm £9.00 Under 2s free Tue 10.30am £5.00 Under 2s free

Effie’s life spirals through a mess of drink, drugs and drama every night, and a hangover worse than death the next day - till one night gives her the chance to be something more. Fri 17 – Sat 25 June ‘It’s not good, gentlemen. That’s why I’ve gathered you all here. An Inspector is coming…a Government Inspector!’

Group discounts apply Tue – Thu eves For more information on concessions see page 51

The Mayor is in a cold sweat. News has reached him of an imminent visit from a Government Inspector. His fear is well-founded as he has been somewhat lacking in his official duties. The hospital’s a health hazard, the school’s a war zone, the soldiers don’t have trousers to march in and he never quite got around to building that church! Surely the only possible solution is bribery; it seems to have resolved many a sticky situation for the Mayor and his team in the past! But a simple case of mistaken identity leads matters to spiral hysterically out of control. Could it be that they have met their match in the complicated business of deception? Gogol’s satirical masterpiece is a hilarious riot of corruption, lies and greed that has lost none of its original bite.

‘Kiss me tonight. Anything else can wait ‘til morning.’ Midsummer’s Eve. Music thuds from the city below. Drink flows, songs are sung, vows are made. In the hospital on the hill the staff stand by to stitch up, heal wounds and pick up the pieces. As the bard said, the course of true love always did get messy around closing time. A modern-day mash-up of Shakespearean romance by Chris Bush (The Sheffield Mysteries), performed by a hundred members of the Sheffield People’s Theatre (20 Tiny Plays about Sheffield, Camelot: The Shining City).
