Welcome I am delighted to tell you about our new season, which includes two world premières on the Crucible stage. However, my excitement is also tinged with sadness, as this will mark my final season in Sheffield. In September, D.H. Lawrence’s classic novel, Lady Chatterley’s Lover takes to the Crucible stage in a poignant adaption by Phillip Breen. Meanwhile in the Studio, we bring you Operation Crucible, the acclaimed story set during the Sheffield Blitz. I’m thrilled to announce that Irving Berlin’s sensational musical, Annie Get Your Gun, will ignite the Crucible stage this Christmas – a perfect production for the whole family. Finally, we bring a brand new musical to the Crucible stage. Everybody’s Talking About Jamie is written by Dan Gillespie Sells (lead singer of the group, The Feeling), and writer Tom MacRae. Based on a BBC documentary, this witty and moving script is a coming-of-age story with a twist. Before signing off, I want to say thank you. Sheffield Theatres is a special place to work and it’s been a pleasure to meet and talk to so many of you during my time here. The next Artistic Director of Sheffield Theatres is so very lucky to have an audience made up of such passionate and warm people. Daniel Evans Artistic Director

Going Viral
Sat 21 May 7.45pm

A motor-mouthed collage of spoken word and storytelling with tales of paranoia, young love and ultra-violence. From the desk of Christopher Brett Bailey comes a spiraling odyssey of pitch-black humour and nightmarish prose. The Government Inspector by Nikolai Gogol adapted by David Harrower Fri 17 – Sat 25 June ‘It’s not good, gentlemen. That’s why I’ve gathered you all here. An inspector is coming…a government inspector!’ The Mayor is in a cold sweat. News has reached him of an imminent visit from a government inspector. His fear is wellfounded as he has been somewhat lacking in his official duties: the hospital’s a health hazard, the school’s a war zone, the soldiers don’t have trousers to march in and he never quite got around to finishing his building programme. The mayor and his bureaucrats need a way to resolve this disastrous situation. When a case of mistaken identity leads to matters spiralling out of control, surely the only reasonable solution is bribery? Following her acclaimed productions of The King’s Speech and Of Mice And Men, Roxana Silbert directs this ground-breaking new production of The Government Inspector. #CrucibleInspector

‘Kiss me tonight. Anything else can wait ‘til morning.’ Midsummer’s Eve. Music thuds from the city below. Drink flows, songs are sung, vows are made. In the hospital on the hill the staff stand by to stitch up, heal wounds and pick up the pieces. As the bard said, the course of true love always did get messy around closing time.

Following their hit run on Broadway, Ian McKellen and Patrick Stewart return to the UK stage in Sean Mathias’ acclaimed production of No Man’s Land, one of the most brilliantly entertaining plays by Nobel Prize laureate Harold Pinter. One summer’s evening, two ageing writers, Hirst and Spooner, meet in a Hampstead pub and continue their drinking into the night at Hirst’s stately house nearby. As the pair become increasingly inebriated, and their stories increasingly unbelievable, the lively conversation soon turns into a revealing power game, further complicated by the return home of two sinister younger men. Don’t miss this rare treat of two master actors in Pinter’s comic masterpiece.

Wed 21 September – Sat 15 October ‘We’ve got to live, no matter how many skies have fallen.’ This sensual and thrilling novel was banned in the UK until 1960. Inspired by the setting of his Nottinghamshire childhood, D.H Lawrence’s tender story shows how three people, reeling from the aftermath of the Great War, struggle to survive in a world which has been blown apart. Passion, class, love and sexual freedom are at the heart of this new adaptation of a truly modern classic. #CrucibleChatt
