I am delighted to introduce my first season of work as Artistic Director of Sheffield Theatres. I have been in Sheffield for a few months now and I have been overwhelmed by the warmth of the welcome I’ve received. This is a great city and I feel very proud and privileged to take on the artistic leadership of two of its most iconic buildings. I can’t tell you how excited I am to be here. This season is about great plays that say something about us all – our lives and loves, the leaders we choose and the families we don’t. These stages are places where we can and should explore ideas, places for debate and discussion. They must be accessible to all, and with new, lower ticket prices and no booking fees we hope to make sure everyone can share the thrill of live theatre. Most importantly, they are home to vivid and heartfelt stories that have the ability to challenge and delight us all in equal measure.

I hope you will join us for a 2017 of world class theatre. Robert Hastie Artistic Director

Lyceum Theatre

By Willy Russell

Mon 23 January – Sat 4 February Written by Willy Russell, the legendary Blood Brothers tells the captivating and moving tale of twins who, separated at birth, grow up on opposite sides of the tracks, only to meet again with fateful consequences. Few musicals have received quite such acclaim as the multi award-winning Blood Brothers. Bill Kenwright’s production surpassed 10,000 performances in London’s West End, one of only three musicals ever to achieve that milestone. It has been affectionately christened the ‘Standing Ovation Musical’, as inevitably it ‘brings the audience cheering to its feet and roaring its approval’ (The Daily Mail). The superb score includes Bright New Day, Marilyn Monroe and the emotionally charged hit Tell Me It's Not True. ‘Exhilarating... one of the best musicals ever written’ Sunday Times ‘Unmissable and Unbeatable’ The Spectator Centre Stage Membership discounts apply

One of the most talked about shows of the Edinburgh Festival Fringe 2015, O No! is a psychedelic ride and a wonky homage to the woman damned for destroying the Beatles. It borrows Yoko Ono’s art instructions to ask whether falling in love is always catastrophic. It’s about reckless optimism, avant-garde art and what we might yet have to learn from the hippies. Jamie Wood is a maker of theatre, clowning and dance that ranges from the comic to the darkly surreal. ‘Fractious, hilarious and punctuated by undeniable beauty, Jamie Wood’s tribute to Yoko Ono is a thing of mischief and magic’ The Stage ★★★★★

The Calman Before The Storm

The people of the UK have voted to leave the EU, even though noone had a plan for what would happen if it did.

Fri 24 February 7.45pm

Fri 3 March 7.45pm

A loophole in the Postal Services Act says you can open other people’s mail under certain circumstances. This is that certain circumstance…

It’s Susan Calman’s tenth year in comedy and she’s back with a brand new show. You may have seen or heard her on shows like QI, Have I Got News For You, News Quiz, Listomania or Mock the Week, now you have the opportunity to see her in person, life size if you will.

If you didn’t want to leave the EU, or you did, but now don’t, because you haven’t got any of the things you were promised, then this is absolutely the show for you. If you did want to leave the EU, and still do, then you will still find it funny, but for different reasons, as you witness this liberal female comedian’s exasperated and despairing meltdown. ‘The most electrifying comedy I’ve yet seen on the Fringe’ The Guardian ★★★★★

In 2003 Kieran Hodgson heard the music of Gustav Mahler and decided to write a symphony. Thirteen years later, Kieran returns with a violin and a story about falling in love and attempting something far beyond your abilities.

A city. Just like this. Right now. A woman staggers home after a two-day bender. A finance worker preaches doom outside Caffè Nero. A priest who doesn’t believe in God stares blankly at the endless disasters on the TV news. In just one moment all their worlds will end.

Following a sell-out tour and BBC Radio 4 adaptation of last year’s Lance, Hodgson returns with his second Edinburgh Comedy Award nominated smash-hit show. ‘Hodgson’s ample narrative, comic and performing skills combine in perfect harmony’ The Guardian ★★★★

Wed 15 – Sat 25 March Victoria Frankenstein is a brilliant, visionary young woman born into a world not ready for her. The industrial revolution is dawning, it’s a time when old orders begin to crumble and everything seems possible. Provided of course, that you are an English-man. Women are not allowed to study medicine in England, so Victoria travels to Ingolstadt, Bavaria and becomes Dr Frankenstein. Convinced that there is no magic, no God, only undiscovered science, Victoria’s experiments lead her to the very brink of human knowledge: the secret of life itself. In the dark of night, a creature is given life. There is violence, there is anger, there is fear. There will be consequences. A psychologically disturbing new version of Mary Wollstonecraft Shelley's Frankenstein.

Snooker Legends

Patience

Wed 5 April 7.00pm

By Gilbert & Sullivan

Snooker Legends is back for its eighth year with former World Champions Stephen Hendry and Steve Davis.

Monday 20 March 7.45pm Patience pokes fun at the eccentric affectations of barely-disguised Victorian celebrities, including Oscar Wilde and his followers. Willowy poets, sighing maidens, hearty milkmaids and burly officers – all become targets of Gilbert and Sullivan’s razor-sharp wit. Expect plenty of tunes and humour as fresh today as it was at the first performance.

Tosca By Puccini

Tuesday 21 March 7.45pm Puccini’s visceral depiction of love in the midst of a war-torn Rome, Tosca is one of the world’s best-loved operas, brimming with lust, corruption and political intrigue. When the painter Cavaradossi helps a fugitive escape, he attracts the attention of Scarpia, the malevolent chief of police. What will Tosca be prepared to sacrifice to save her lover from his fate? Julius Caesar By William Shakespeare Directed by Robert Hastie Wed 17 May – Sat 10 June ‘Beware the Ides of March…’ A hero returns from battle, and the people take to the streets. But not all the voices of the city are raised in celebration. Some are whispering dissent. And some are foretelling disaster... Regional Première ‘This is the first time you've ever listened to me properly and it's because I'm not speaking’ Billy was born deaf into a hearing family. In the arguments and jokes around the kitchen table, he has never been treated any differently to the rest of them. But when he meets Sylvia, who teaches him sign language, he starts to wonder if his family have ever really listened to him at all. Deeply moving and shockingly funny, Tribes is about the need we all feel to belong, to speak and to be understood. Kate Hewitt, winner of the inaugural Royal Theatrical Support Trust (RTST) Director Award 2016, directs the regional première of Nina Raine's powerful family drama.

Wed 19 – Sat 22 July World Première ‘They say this town’s gone to the dogs. No, it’s gone to the wolves round here’ This place was paradise, that's what we were told - a socialist Utopia safe within its seven hills. Not anymore. Now there are monsters in the night, wolves in the woods. In a retirement castle just outside the city a group of seniors await rescue – not from the army or the police, but their grandchildren, who promised they’d visit today. If they don’t make it – well, they might just have to take matters into their own hands. A heady mix of myth and magic, Chris Bush (The Sheffield Mysteries, A Dream) writes and Sheffield People’s Theatre (20 Tiny Plays about Sheffield, Camelot: The Shining City) perform this brand new story about the lessons each generation pass on to the next.
