Welcome It’s almost a year since I arrived in Sheffield and I have been overwhelmed by the passion and enthusiasm that I’ve experienced in that time. I have been thrilled by watching Patrick Stewart and Ian McKellen in No Man’s Land; cried with laughter at the nation’s funniest panto dame, Damian Williams; and I couldn’t stop myself tapping along when Everybody’s Talking about Jamie exploded on stage in February. Alongside thousands of you, I’ve been bowled over by the work I’ve experienced since I arrived. We are incredibly fortunate to have such a strong and supportive audience, and I remain hugely proud to be directing and choosing the work that brings you to these incredible theatres in the heart of this thriving city. This autumn, I am delighted that award-winning theatre and film director Sam Yates will direct Eugene O’Neill’s classic play Desire Under the Elms in the Crucible; we throw open our doors when we become a Fun Palace again in October; and in the Lyceum we’re packed with shows that are bursting at the seams with five star reviews. We round the year off with a spectacular Christmas of golden eggs and yellow brick roads as Mother Goose and The Wizard of Oz herald the beginning of the festivities. I hope you can join us for an exciting autumn season!

‘This is the first time you've ever listened to me properly and it’s because I’m not speaking’

‘They say this town’s gone to the dogs. No, it’s gone to the wolves round here’

Billy was born deaf into a hearing family. In the arguments and jokes around the kitchen table, he has never been treated any differently to the rest of them. But when he meets Sylvia, who teaches him sign language, he starts to wonder if his family have ever really listened to him at all.

This place was paradise, that's what we were told - a socialist Utopia safe within its seven hills. Not anymore. Now there are monsters in the night, wolves in the woods. In a retirement castle just outside the city a group of seniors await rescue – not from the army or the police, but their grandchildren, who promised they’d visit today.

Kate Hewitt, winner of the inaugural Royal Theatrical Support Trust (RTST) Director Award 2016, directs the regional première of Nina Raine’s powerful family drama. Studio Theatre All performances from £15.00 *Public Dress Rehearsal. Subject to confirmation.

Wed 6 – Sat 9 September Stage and television stars Paul Bradley (Elliot Hope in Holby City; Nigel Bates in Eastenders) and Jessie Wallace (Kat Slater in EastEnders and Redwater) lead the cast of Deathtrap; a truly satisfying spine-chiller that is guaranteed to keep you on the edge of your seat. Sidney Bruhl, a once-successful writer of stage thrillers, is in the grip of chronic writer’s block, when young playwright Clifford Anderson sends Bruhl his brilliant new whodunit, Deathtrap. Desperate to set Broadway alight once more, should Bruhl kill the newcomer and pass the play off as his own? Don’t miss this wickedly enjoyably ‘who’ll do it’ where no one is exactly what they first appear to be!

Ruby Wax

Actors Touring Company

REMOTE

A Mindfulness Guide for the Frazzled. A forum for discussion.

Living with the Lights On

Presented by Coney

Wed 25 October 7.30pm Drop dead gorgeous, sassy and smart, Ruby Wax brings her new five star one-woman show to the stage based on her number one best seller A Mindfulness Guide for the Frazzled. She’s been honoured with the title of poster girl for mental illness; once crazy, now less so, she gives a tour of the mind – how to use it, not lose it. By the way, she graduated from Oxford three years ago (at a late stage) so she should know her stuff. Crucible Theatre £20.00 Concessions £2.00 off For more information on concessions see page 41

Written and Performed by Mark Lockyer Mon 6 – Tue 7 November 7.45pm Meet Mark. The thing is I’ve got myself into a bit of a mess… Mark’s an actor. I keep forgetting my lines. I’ve left my girlfriend and I’m beginning to stink. Mark was an actor. And to make matters worse I’ve met the Devil. Hilarious, touching and utterly bonkers, Living with the Lights On is a gripping story of a life lived at the edge.

Thu 9 November 7.45pm Imagine you’re in a theatre of the future, powered by an algorithm. REMOTE is an interactive live game interrogating the politics of choice, and decision-making in an immaterial world, saturated with technology. This is a piece of game-theatre that you play sitting down, and its entirely led by you, the audience. As well as just being yourselves – you are also, together, playing a character, and you’ll be asked to make choices for her. Fuses an interactive script with a live and responsive sound design.

Wed 22 – Thu 23 November 7.45pm A comically absurd and quietly shattering journey to the heart of our tolerant and fair society. Who is Serge? Why is he here? What is he claiming has happened to him? And what has Willy Wonker got to do with it? Based on the true stories of migrants caught in the most British of interview processes, The Claim asks what happens when your life is at stake and all you have to save it are your words. ‘Smart, sharp and forensically observed, identifying the price that is paid for hearing what we want to hear’ Michael Grandage Company. Lemn Sissay

An ARC Stockton Production

Something Dark

Instructions for Border Crossing

Sat 25 November 7.45pm A rare chance to see a dramatic reading of the acclaimed one-man play by celebrated performance poet, Lemn Sissay. Something Dark tells the story of Lemn Sissay’s upbringing in children’s homes and foster care, and the search for his family and true identity. Originally directed by John McGrath (National Theatre of Wales), Something Dark has been performed throughout the world to great critical acclaim. ‘It would be impossible to come away from this show unmoved and uninspired’ Metro London Studio Theatre £15.00 Concessions £2.00 off For more information on concessions see page 41

Written and performed by Daniel Bye Thu 30 November 7.45pm A twelve-year-old girl sneaks across the border into her own country. Her parents watch her on a computer screen. The works of a half-forgotten performance artist seem to hold the key to bringing down a brutal system operating on our behalf and under our noses. Do you join in? Or do you look the other way? From the maker of The Price of Everything and Going Viral, Instructions for Border Crossing is the exposed gearbox of a political thriller. Blending Daniel’s trademark storytelling with a series of live interventions from the audience*, the show itself is as unstable as the world it describes. *Don’t worry, you don’t have to do anything you don’t want to. ‘Bye is one of the most astute and thoughtful contemporary theatre-makers around.’ The Stage Studio Theatre £12.50 Concessions £2.00 off For more information on concessions see page 41
