Where We Began
Often Onstage
By Eve Nicol
Thu 11 October 7.45pm
Wed 17 October 7.45pm
Wed 10 October 8.00pm
When every citizen is ordered to return to their place of birth, Where We Began examines where we could end up.
Often Onstage is an offbeat facetious romp that explores the ins and outs of theatre through the medium of dance.
The UK’s first Theatre Company of Sanctuary, Stand and Be Counted Theatre present a wild and vivid vision of the future, combining storytelling, movement and live music. Five performers from across the globe challenge existing notions of ‘home’ in this multilingual celebration of personal identity.
With one step forward and two hundred steps back, this choreographic exercise in comings and goings gleefully disrupts traditional theatrical conventions, unearthing dormant anxieties about life choices along the way.
One Life Stand is a late-night search for intimacy across a hyperconnected, hypersexual city, exposing the loneliness sometimes found in modern relationships, where the expectations of love and lust are ever-changing. Written by Eve Nicol with music by James Frewer and Honeyblood, this is the latest gig theatre production from the award-winning company behind All We Ever Wanted Was Everything. Did you ever go to Silversands On a sunny summer’s day? Then perhaps you saw the mermaid Who sang in the deep blue bay...
The play is based on the original book The Singing Mermaid. Text copyright © Julia Donaldson 2012. Illustrations copyright © Lydia Monks 2012. Published by Macmillian Children's books.
One day, the singing mermaid is tempted away from all of her sea creature friends and her peaceful home at Silversands to join a travelling circus. The audiences love to hear her sing, but the poor mermaid was tricked! Instead of the swimming pool she was promised, she is kept in a small tank by the wicked circus master Sam Sly, and she soon longs to return to the freedom of the sea. Will she ever escape? And who will help her along the way?

Accessing Sheffield Theatres We pride ourselves on offering a warm welcome and a fantastic theatre experience that is accessible for everyone. Facilities at Sheffield Theatres include: Level entrances to the main foyers and lift access to each floor of both the Crucible and Lyceum. The lift in the Crucible is located to the right of the main entrance as you enter the building. The lift in the Lyceum is accessed via the Stalls Bar (to the right of the main entrance). The main Box Office, located in the Crucible, features a lower counter. There are spaces in each auditorium for wheelchair users, which can be booked by calling the Box Office (not currently available online), as well as a number of seats with level access. For customers with limited mobility, our Box Office team can advise on the best areas to sit, including whether there are any steps to navigate. Assistance dogs are welcome in public areas of the theatre, including the auditorium during the show. Alternatively we can take care of them during the performance, we ask that you pre-book your dog if you would like us to do this. A loop system is available at the Box Office counter and we operate an infrared system in the auditorium. Accessible toilets are located in both buildings, the Crucible also has a Changing Places toilet.
For performances, we offer: Audio Described Performances and Touch Tours Audio description provides a live commentary of the action on stage, interspersed with the actors’ dialogue. Description can be listened to via a headset linked to the infrared audio system. Some Audio Described performances are preceded by a Touch Tour offering the opportunity to familiarise yourself with the set, props and costumes in advance of the performance. British Sign Language Interpretation Box Office staff can advise on the best seats for a good view of the interpreter and stage. Captioned Performances Captioning converts the dialogue and sound effects on stage into text which is displayed on a screen on or near the stage. Relaxed Performances In a Relaxed Performance audience members can move around freely, leave and enter the auditorium as needed, the lights never go completely dark and sound effects are softened. Dementia Friendly Our Dementia Friendly Performances are specially adapted to meet the needs of people living with Dementia. Our team are trained Dementia Friends and we're proud to offer a Dementia Friendly experience.
