‘Sheffield Theatres continues to produce exemplary shows, serving a local and national audience that greatly values its work’ The Stage

In January, we were delighted to be awarded the prestigious Stage 100 Regional Theatre of the Year Award. The award was the culmination of an outstanding year for us. We’re proud to be recognised for the contribution that we make to the creative life of our city, the region and on a national scale. During 2012 we staged a major season celebrating the work of Michael Frayn, the production of Democracy later transferring to the Old Vic and Aidan McArdle being awarded a Theatre UK Award for Best Supporting Performance. We produced the first major production of A Taste of Honey since author Shelagh Delaney’s death; collaborated with the Bush Theatre on the world première of DC Moore’s Straight (which also transferred to the Bush Theatre following its run in Sheffield) and ended the year with the hugely successful production of My Fair Lady. This year, we’re looking forward to enjoying more bold, exciting work with our audiences across all three of our stages.

Following two sell-out West End seasons, the original writers of the classic BBC TV series, Antony Jay and Jonathan Lynn, have reunited for this anniversary production of Yes, Prime Minister. Last seen at the Lyceum Theatre in 2011, Prime Minister Jim Hacker and his Cabinet Secretary Sir Humphrey Appleby are back in this hilarious play. In a world of spin, BlackBerrys and ‘sexed up’ dossiers, the PM is staring disaster in the face. The country is on the brink of financial meltdown and the Government’s only apparent salvation comes from a morally dubious deal with the Foreign Minister of Kumranistan. Will Jim Hacker and his team of advisors be able to rescue the country from the edge?

A Sheffield Theatres Production

The History Boys By Alan Bennett Thu 16 May – Sat 8 June ‘I’m a Jew. I’m small. I’m homosexual. And I live in Sheffield. I’m f**ked’ A levels may be over, but for one set of unruly pupils, their education is far from finished. Back in lessons to train for entrance exams, the boys find themselves caught between two opposing styles of teaching. Eccentric Hector leads with a flamboyance that brings everything to life, while cynical Irwin has been brought in by the Head to provide a ruthless route to Oxbridge. But with love, sex and university on their minds, the question is, will any of them make the grade? The History Boys by Alan Bennett is one of Britain’s favourite comedies, full of stunning one-liners and teenage anxieties.

Bill Kenwright presents the Live Theatre Newcastle and National Theatre co-production of

Originally produced by Newcastle’s acclaimed Live Theatre, and following sell-out seasons at the National Theatre and on Broadway, Bill Kenwright presents the award-winning play The Pitmen Painters. Written by Lee Hall, creator of the worldwide sensation Billy Elliot, The Pitmen Painters has received huge critical acclaim and won the Evening Standard award for Best New Play. In 1934, a group of Ashington miners hired a professor to teach an art appreciation evening class. Rapidly abandoning theory in favour of practice, the pitmen began to paint. Within a few years the most avant-garde artists became their friends and their work was acquired by prestigious collections; but every day they worked, as before, down the mine. Examining the lives of a group of ordinary men who did extraordinary things, The Pitmen Painters is a humorous, deeply moving and timely look at art, class and politics.

A Sheffield Theatres Production

A Passionate Woman By Kay Mellor Tue 10 – Sat 21 September It is the morning of Betty’s son’s wedding and she decides to go up into the attic to dust. Surrounded by clutter, memories and ghosts from her past, Betty finds herself torn between the three men in her life - a husband she’s never really loved, a son she’s about to lose and a man she had a passionate affair with over thirty years ago. Desperate to escape it all, there’s only one place to go and that’s - up. This is the first ever major revival of Kay Mellor’s glorious comedy.

Play. Learn. Debate. Imagine...

Sheffield People’s Theatre

Play Reading Group

Sheffield People’s Theatre has staged two productions so far: Lives in Art on the Crucible stage and 20 Tiny Plays about Sheffield in the Studio Theatre with local performers aged 12-90.

Read and discuss plays by the writers of The History Boys and This Is My Family. Facilitated by local playwright Richard Hurford. The Madness of George III by Alan Bennett Mon 20 May A hilarious examination of British monarchy, dirty politics and quack medicine from one of British theatre’s national treasures.

We have big plans for Sheffield People’s Theatre over the next few years including an expanded programme of workshops for all ages.

Neville’s Island by Tim Firth Mon 24 June A work’s team-building exercise goes horribly wrong when four men are stranded on an island in the middle of the Lake District. Funny, alarming and poignant.

If you’re aged 12+ and you want to be part of future Sheffield People’s Theatre projects (or aged 16+ and interested in directing, writing, design, lighting, sound and stage management), please email spt@sheffieldtheatres.co.uk or call 0114 201 3888.
