Welcome Alongside our in-house productions, we have a fantastic array of touring shows visiting the Lyceum Theatre this season including Priscilla Queen of the Desert, Maureen Lipman in Daytona and Slava’s Snow Show.

We are delighted to share our autumn 2013 season with you. The season opens with two co-productions. A Passionate Woman, written and directed by Kay Mellor and starring Lynda Bellingham in the Lyceum Theatre, and in the Studio, a collaboration between Sheffield Theatres and HighTide Festival Theatre on a major new production of Stuart: A Life Backwards. In the Crucible, we open with this year’s Shakespeare, The Winter’s Tale, which will be directed by our Associate Director, Paul Miller (Hamlet).

At Christmas, the Lyceum Theatre welcomes Damian Williams back alongside Ian H Watkins (Steps) in Jack and the Beanstalk; tutti frutti will return to the Studio Theatre with the delightful The Boy Who Cried Wolf and, in the Crucible, we will stage a new production of Lionel Bart’s Oliver!, featuring 60 wonderfully talented local young people alongside 22 professional actors and 15 musicians.

My Theatre Matters! Sheffield Theatres is supporting My Theatre Matters!, the Theatrical Management Association’s major national campaign that invites audiences to shout about how important their local theatre is to them.

Actors including Matthew Kelly and Siân Phillips, seen recently on stage here, are supporting the campaign too, as are the actors union Equity, Bectu and The Stage newspaper, plus lots of other venues across the country.

Over the past few years, we have suffered some major cuts to our funding. In the midst of financial hardship, we’re very proud that the people of this city and region come together to be moved by the shows on our stages and that they continue to value and support our work with such generosity.

Now is your chance to influence the decision makers the next time they are making choices about funding. Tue 13 – Sat 17 August Denys Edwards Players return with another family classic, Carrie’s War, based on the best-selling book by Nina Bawden. In the 1940s Carrie Willow and her brother Nick are evacuated to the safety of the North Wales countryside where they stay with mean Mr Evans. There’s also kind Auntie Lou; Mr Johnny, who speaks his own language; Hephzibah, the witch at Druid’s Grove who makes a perfect apple pie, and young Albert Sandwich, who kisses Carrie on her birthday. And then there’s the ancient skull with its terrifying curse...

Tue 10 – Sat 21 September It’s the morning of Betty’s son’s wedding and she decides to go up into the attic to dust. Surrounded by clutter, memories and ghosts from her past, Betty finds herself torn between the three men in her life – a husband she’s never really loved, a son she’s about to lose and a man she had a passionate affair with over thirty years ago. Desperate to escape it all, there’s only one place to go and that’s…up. Most recently, Lynda Bellingham created the role of Chris in Calendar Girls playing to sold out houses in the West End and across the country. A Passionate Woman reunites her with Christopher Timothy for the first time since 1990 when they starred as James and Helen Herriot in the BBC’s All Creatures Great and Small. Multi-award winning Polish film star Mateusz Damie˛ cki and Peter McMillan complete the cast. Sheffield-based, international innovators Forced Entertainment’s latest performance imagines a multitude of hypothetical futures.

Ruby was our mum. She had to work a lot. We played in the burnt out car round the back. We could do anything- except play with the needles.

Two performers wreathed in coloured lights speculate about what tomorrow might bring. Exploring utopian and dystopian visions, science fiction scenarios, political nightmares and absurd fantasies, the audience is carried along on a tide of conjectures and dreams.

Music in the Round’s autumn highlights include an evening of music and conversation that touches on the family background and musical experiences of one of the UK’s favourite novelists, Marina Lewycka (A Short History of Tractors in Ukrainian); the first in a new series of Beethoven concerts performed by the Elias String Quartet; the latest instalment of Tim Horton’s celebrated Beethoven piano sonata cycle; and the Arcadia Quartet, presented in partnership with the Wigmore Hall.

Wed 7 – Sat 10 May It is 1992, Grimley Colliery faces the threat of closure and the future of the brass band seems uncertain. With the miners torn between redundancy packages and the picket lines, bandleader Danny’s hopes of winning the national brass band competition seem like a distant dream. But the arrival of flugelhorn-playing Gloria brings hope, romance and controversy to the Yorkshire brass band on the brink of collapse.

For families, the composer of Sir Scallywag and the Golden Underpants and The Chimpanzees of Happytown will present his latest literary musical adaptation, Stan and Mabel. Christmas is celebrated with songs from the 17th to 19th centuries courtesy of The City Musick.

Discounts and Concessions

You can book tickets by telephone, in person or on our website

Concessions: £2.50 off for Senior Citizens, registered unemployed, disabled, full time students and children under 16.

All bookings made at the Box Office (excluding cash) are subject to a £1.50 transaction fee. Bookings made online are subject to a £1.00 fee.

Schools: £10.00 tickets for full time education groups of 10 or more. One free supervisory ticket for every 10 bought.

Our Box Office is situated inside the Crucible Theatre on Tudor Square. Box Office opening hours Mon – Sat 10.00am to 8.00pm On the first Tuesday of every month the Box Office opens at 11.00am due to staff training.

Centre Stage Members: £3.50 off for all Sheffield Theatres members Mon – Sat evenings.

On non–performance days the Box Office closes at 6.00pm. On Sundays and Bank Holidays the Box Office opens one hour before the show.

Access Sheffield Theatres is committed to making your visit as welcoming as possible and provides a wide range of access facilities.

Impaired mobility We have lower counters in the Box Office and bars in the Crucible, and wheelchair access is provided in all of our venues, including bars and toilets. Customers who benefit from the assistance of a companion can also claim one free carer seat.

Guide dogs Guide dogs and support dogs are welcome in public areas of the theatre and staff will be happy to take care of them during performances. Please advise Box Office when booking.

Deaf, deafened and hard of hearing A loop system is available at the Box Office counter and we operate an infra-red system in the auditorium. We also have regular British Sign Language interpreted and captioned performances.

Relaxed performances Open to everyone, but specifically adapted for people with learning disabilities and other sensory and communication disorders - providing a more relaxed and supportive atmosphere in order to reduce anxiety.

Touch Tour We offer a touch tour on some of our performances. Touch tours are available on The Winter’s Tale and Oliver! this season.
