Welcome It’s been great to see so many of you here over the autumn season. We’ve had a fantastic year, a particular highlight of which was our production of Hamlet. The spring and summer seasons offer plenty to look forward to, but not before you’ve celebrated the festive season by seeing our dazzling musical, Me and My Girl or our fun-packed pantomime, Peter Pan. There have also been some challenges for us this year, particularly in terms of funding, and we wanted to say how much we appreciate the support you give us. We pride ourselves on playing an essential role in the city and the region’s communities and helping to make Sheffield a great place to live. Every time you buy a ticket, a programme or make a donation, you’re helping us continue the work that we do on our stages and in communities across the region. So thank you.
Dan Bates Chief Executive
Daniel Evans Artistic Director

Propeller
The Comedy of Errors & Richard III Propeller, the internationally acclaimed all-male company led by director Ed Hall, is renowned for its bold approach and for bringing an exciting, physical energy to its productions of classic plays. This season they bring two plays to Sheffield before taking them on tour to the rest of the country.
Wed 19 – Sat 29 January Lyceum Theatre
Arguably Shakespeare’s most villainous King, we watch in horror and delight as Richard III, with cruel wit and dark humour, murders his way to the throne. This hugely entertaining and diabolical adventure tells the story of one man’s journey to heaven, then back to hell. In complete contrast, The Comedy of Errors is Shakespeare’s most farcical comedy, and also his smartest. Two sets of estranged twins, separated at birth, find themselves in the same city 25 years later with hilarious consequences. A series of mistaken identities, assumed personas and wild mishaps bring a family crisis into heart warming focus.

David Hare At the beginning of the 1990s, I was thrilled to discover the work of David Hare. What struck me, apart from the sheer ambition and scope of the plays, was the effortless fusion between the personal and the political. David gets right to the heart and humanity of his characters and their situations with a razor-sharp wit and a rigorously satisfying sense of structure. We’re delighted to present three plays from one of the most influential writers in post-war Britain in all three of our theatres – our most ambitious project to date. We’ve teamed up with the Showroom cinema who will present some of David’s film and television work. You can also enjoy talks, discussions and playreadings throughout the season, including one of Via Dolorosa by the author himself. I hope you enjoy this celebration of David’s work. Daniel Evans

The very day I met her, she showed me you must always do what you want. If you want something you must get it. I think that’s a wonderful way to live, don’t you? Stationed behind enemy lines in Nazi-occupied France, Susan Traherne lived for the moment - her every hour filled with danger, intrigue and exhilaration. But back in Britain, Susan’s string of dead-end jobs and destructive relationships drives her to the very brink of madness. Spanning three decades, David Hare’s play is a powerful and momentous comment on post-war England, where ideals collapse and values collide.

It’s always Christ. We’re alone. We make love. We have a little time. And then Christ enters the room. In a poor inner city parish, Lionel Espy leads a team of eccentric vicars who are wholly intent on the welfare of their parishioners. But the churches are empty. Tony Ferris, the new evangelical curate who joins the team, longs for a full church. The day of judgement is coming. Artistic Director, Daniel Evans, directs this Olivier award-winning comic play.

Don’t you want to talk? Even you. You can’t be alone all the time. Isn’t it a human instinct? To share? When celebrated novelist Frances Beale arrives at Madeleine Palmer’s home, she is looking for a story. But not a work of fiction. She wants to hear the true story of how their lives became inextricably linked over forty years ago. Taking place over the course of a single night, this is a witty, brutal and poignant portrait of two women, united by their love for the same man.

Puccini’s Il tabarro & Gianni Schicchi Mozart’s La clemenza di Tito English Touring Opera return to the Lyceum with three rarely toured masterpieces by Mozart and Puccini. Puccini’s Il tabarro (The Cloak) and Gianni Schicchi could hardly be more different. Composed by a mature master of drama and character, one is a moody romance ending in grotesque murder and the other is a sparkling comedy about a family inheritance in Florence. Beautiful and witty, the lyrical genius is epitomised in the lovely aria, O mia babbino caro. La clemenza di Tito is one of Mozart’s final works and his most magnificent. An epic story of terrorism, betrayal and forgiveness.

Bill Kenwright presents
Jekyll and Hyde Marti Pellow, the hugely successful solo artist and front man of Wet Wet Wet, makes a hotly-anticipated return to the UK stage in a major new tour of the hit Broadway musical, Jekyll and Hyde.

Yes, Prime Minister Following a sell-out season at Chichester Festival Theatre and a successful West End run, Yes, Prime Minister comes to Sheffield. The original writers of the classic BBC TV series Antony Jay and Jonathan Lynn have reunited for this anniversary production, and now the Prime Minister Jim Hacker, his Cabinet Secretary Sir Humphrey Appleby and his Private Secretary Bernard Woolley are back in this hilarious new play.
In a world of spin, Blackberrys and ‘sexed up’ dossiers, the PM is staring disaster in the face. The country is on the brink of financial meltdown and the Government’s only apparent salvation comes from a morally dubious deal with the Foreign Minister of Kumranistan. Will Jim Hacker and his team of advisors be able to rescue the country from the edge? ‘The audience loved it. A hit’ ★★★★ Daily Mail ‘Jim Hacker and Sir Humphrey are back in truly vintage form. As politically sharp and blissfully funny as ever’ Daily Telegraph

New Adventures
Matthew Bourne’s Cinderella This new production of Cinderella is a thrilling and evocative journey through London during the Second World War. Matthew Bourne’s interpretation of Prokofiev’s haunting score has, at its heart, a true wartime romance. A chance meeting results in a magical night for Cinderella and her dashing young RAF pilot, together just long enough to fall in love before being parted by the horrors of the Blitz.
First seen in the West End in 1997, this dazzling show has been completely revised in this brand new production, created to commemorate the 70th anniversary of the Blitz. Bourne’s vivid storytelling has never been more heart-stopping and touching, creating a unique and unforgettable depiction of a familiar and beloved fable. ‘A dazzling spectacle...fresh and vital, hilarious, profound and stunningly original’ The Times

The Crucible Christmas Musical 2011 A Sheffield Theatres Production Thu 1 December 2011 – Sat 7 January 2012
Music and Lyrics by STEPHEN SONDHEIM Book by GEORGE FURTH Originally produced and directed on Broadway by Harold Prince Director Jonathan Munby Designer Christopher Oram Cast includes Daniel Evans
Robert, a commitment-phobic bachelor, is about to hit 35 and his friends think it’s time he settled down. This brilliantly observed musical about love and marriage is sophisticated, fast-paced and funny. Packed with sensational songs, including Getting Married Today, The Ladies Who Lunch and Being Alive, Company will star Sheffield Theatres’ Artistic Director Daniel Evans as Robert. Daniel has won widespread critical acclaim as an actor, particularly for his performances in Sondheim’s musicals (double Olivier awardwinner for Merrily We Roll Along and Sunday in The Park With George), and most recently he was on our screens in the Sondheim celebration concert as part of the BBC Proms.
