with Simon Callow Simon Callow (Waiting for Godot, Shakespeare in Love) is a virtuoso storyteller and returns to the Lyceum Theatre after The Man From Stratford in 2010 with two one-man plays by Charles Dickens. In an absorbing theatrical event he tells the stories of Dr Marigold, a travelling salesman who adopts a little deaf and dumb girl and Mr Chops, a freak-show turn who wins the lottery and a place in society. Adapted by Patrick Garland, these masterpieces, which were hugely popular when Dickens himself performed them on his famed reading tours, provide a masterly blend of the comic, bizarre and poignant that is classic Dickens.

Shakespeare’s The Winter’s Tale tells the story of a man consumed by an inexplicable jealousy that destroys his family, his kingdom and himself. Wracked by guilt, Leontes sets off a chain reaction of events leading to a miraculous climax and the chance of redemption. The greatest playwright writing at the height of his powers, this is poetry in motion.

Thu 2.00pm £13.00 £17.00 £20.00

Internationally acclaimed all-male company, led by Director Ed Hall, Propeller returns to Sheffield following their critically acclaimed productions of Richard III and The Comedy Of Errors. Renowned for combining a rigorous approach to the text with an exciting, physical aesthetic Propeller engages its audience’s imagination and bring fresh understanding to classic plays. It’s Shakespeare rediscovered. ‘A beautifully acted evening. Roars of approval all round’ ★★★★ The Guardian

Follow the story of Chutney the chimp as he and his beautiful tree help to spread colour and happiness throughout the town. Chimpanzees, this town is dead. These streets are all the same. Let’s celebrate our differences. Let’s make it fun again! Let’s make our houses colourful. Let’s pull our fences down. And, while we’re at it, Why not change its name to Happytown!

The season launches on Thu 29 September with a very special Beethoven event. ‘Eureka’, indeed!

Following last year’s sell-out tour of Little Red Riding Hood, Ensemble 360 and Polly Ives present this brand new piece for 2 – 7 year olds. Music in the Round’s Children’s Composer in Residence, Paul Rissmann, has written this imaginative and inspirational piece based on the children’s book, The Chimpanzees of Happytown by Giles Andreae, illustrated by Guy Parker-Rees and published by Orchard Books. With projections of the images from the book and lots of audience participation, this concert is ideal for engaging young children in high quality music, as well as firing up their imaginations.
