Ruddigore By Gilbert & Sullivan
Thu 31 May – Sat 2 June
Fri & Sat 7.30pm £15.00 £26.50 £31.50 £36.50 £39.50
The topsy-turvy road to love. Gilbert and Sullivan make merry at the expense of Victorian melodrama in this, one of their most imaginative creations. Sir Despard Murgatroyd is a man under pressure. He has inherited a witch’s curse forcing him to commit a crime a day or die in agony. So it’s a huge relief when shy Robin Oakapple is revealed as his long-lost elder brother – the true inheritor of the curse. This revelation scuppers Robin’s chances with the prim Rose Maybud, but his troubles really start when his feeble crimes drag his exasperated ancestors back from the dead. Opera North’s much-loved and universally acclaimed production perfectly captures the wonderful spirit of Gilbert & Sullivan’s topsy-turvy invention. ‘A delightful show that will give great pleasure… this is operetta bliss’ ★★★★ Daily Telegraph

The Adventures of Wound Man and Shirley
Fri 8 June 7.45pm How much is beauty worth? What will people pay for an air guitar? Can I have a glass of milk?
Written and performed by Chris Goode. Directed by Wendy Hubbard. Designed by James Lewis. Produced by Ric Watts
These urgent questions and others are answered in The Price of Everything, a performance lecture about value. Daniel Bye’s whistlestop tour of bizarre facts and impassioned arguments is occasionally shambolic and often biased - but always a joy to watch.
Wed 6 June 7.45pm Shirley is a teenage boy with a girl’s name and the weirdest kid in school. Nothing makes much sense to him and his heart belongs to a classmate who barely knows he exists.
Comic, provocative, and possibly a tiny bit sad, this show is a must if you’ve ever wondered about the difference between the price of an object and its value.
Wound Man is an unconventional superhero with an alarming assortment of weapons sticking out from every part of his body.
And you get a free glass of milk.

Madame Butterfly
Position Vacant, Apply Within.
Tue 18 – Sat 22 September
Sun 14 October 7.30pm
Innocence, love and betrayal unfold in the picturesque gardens of a Japanese Villa. Butterfly is fragile, unworldly and prepared to sacrifice everything for the love of the handsome American, Lieutenant Pinkerton. He deserts her and their child, only to return years later with his new wife. Abandoned and betrayed, Butterfly is left with only one honourable course of action.
Julian Clary is looking for love and he’s not leaving town empty handed... Master of camp, Julian Clary, is scouring the land in search of love. He’s promised to leave no straight unturned. ‘Because I’m still considered to be quite a catch and because your town is noted for its heterosexuals on the cusp, there’s bound to be stiff competition’, says Julian. ‘Therefore I’ll be hosting ruthless elimination games. You can be sure of one thing. By the end of the evening, we’ll all be celebrating my new partnership.’
East meets West as Northern Ballet blend classical ballet with Japanese-style dancing, alongside Puccini’s beautiful score played live by the Northern Ballet Sinfonia.
A glass of Blue Nun may be available to those who make an effort or anyone named Jason. But please bring your own confetti.

Mon 24 – Sat 29 September ‘Murder, greed, corruption, exploitation, adultery and treachery…all those things we hold near and dear to our hearts’. So begins the international award-winning musical, Chicago. Based on real life events back in the roaring 1920s, nightclub singer Roxie Hart shoots her lover and, together with Cell Block rival, double-murderess Velma Kelly, fights to keep herself from death row with the help of smooth talking lawyer, Billy Flynn. Created by the musical theatre talents of John Kander, Fred Ebb and legendary choreographer Bob Fosse, Chicago’s sexy, sassy score includes All That Jazz and Razzle Dazzle. With six Tony, two Olivier, one Grammy, two Bafta and six Academy Awards, Chicago truly is ‘The sharpest, slickest show on the block’ The Times. It would be a crime to miss it.
