2013
WAS A REMARKABLE YEAR FOR SHEFFIELD THEATRES. 2013 started with a major accolade when Sheffield Theatres was named Regional Theatre of the Year in the The Stage Awards. In October, a win of four awards at the UK Theatre Awards followed - more than any other regional theatre - and a spectacular year was concluded in January 2014 with the unprecedented award of a second year as Regional Theatre of the Year for 2014.
Our productions have attracted national and international acclaim and drawn audiences from across the country to enjoy our work here in Sheffield. We have welcomed over 439,000 people through our doors this year – an increase of more than 80,000 people since 2012. In addition, Sheffield Theatres’ productions have toured the length and breadth of the country, to London and to New York.
Our success is thanks to the passionate support we receive from our audiences, our artists, our staff team, our corporate partners, our Centre Stage Members and our funders. Thank you all for making this year possible. Neil Adleman Chair, Sheffield Theatres Trust Dan Bates Chief Executive Daniel Evans Artistic Director

Sheffield Theatres produced work for each of its three stages in 2013. In February, we co-produced The Full Monty on the Lyceum stage, which then went on to tour across the UK. In February Bull, a new play by Mike Bartlett transformed the Studio into a corporate boxing ring with the audience sitting or standing around the four sides. Following its run in Sheffield, the production transferred to New York’s 59E59 Theaters as part of the Brits Off Broadway season. Paul Miller’s production of D.H. Lawrence’s classic, The Daughter-in- Law brought Linda Baron and Claire Price to the Crucible stage in March, followed by Matthew Kelly in a new production of The History Boys in May. In the Studio, a cast of over 60 from Sheffield People’s Theatre took to the stage to perform 20 Tiny Plays About Sheffield and in July, we produced a brand new musical by Tim Firth, This Is My Family. The autumn saw the return of Shakespeare with The Winter’s Tale in the Crucible, whilst Stuart: A Life Backwards, a co-production with HighTide Festival Theatre and Watford Palace Theatre came to the Studio following a highly successful run in Edinburgh. Richard Wilson directed Robin Hooper’s powerful new play, Love Your Soldiers in the Studio with Jordan Bright, a double amputee, making his acting debut in the show. Our year concluded with the raucous return of Damian Williams as the Dame in Jack and The Beanstalk in the Lyceum and a critically acclaimed production of Oliver! in the Crucible, playing to sell-out audiences across its 8 week run.

OUR AUDIENCES Our audience has grown significantly over the last 12 months with an additional 80,000 people through our doors for theatre alone (excluding snooker) in 2013. Audiences have been particularly strong for the new work on our stages and throughout the festive period. Both the pantomime, Jack and the Beanstalk, and Oliver! surpassed all previous records.
Many of our audiences have also become enthusiastic participants this year. Sheffield People’s Theatre has gone from strength to strength and took to the Studio stage to perform 20 Tiny Plays About Sheffield to sell-out audiences in April 2013. We have also seen our work experience programme and our Summer School increase in popularity during 2013.
