Hats Off To The 101ers, And Other Material

Mon 30 January 7.45pm

Thu 19 – Sat 21 January Tim Crouch re-imagines Twelfth Night through the eyes of Shakespeare’s most pent-up steward. I, Malvolio is a charged, hilarious and often unsettling rant from a man adrift in front of a cruel audience, a man ‘notoriously abused’. In this story of prudery and practical jokes, Malvolio enters the madness of Shakespeare’s classic comedy and makes it his own. Perfect for young and old alike. ‘This is a treasure, an hour to remember. Immaculate, moving, funny, wise’ The Times Co-commissioned by Brighton Festival and Singapore Arts Festival.

Fri 27 January 7.45pm An extravagant mess of foaming bubble hats, superlative jokes, bad guitar riffs, delightful monologues, hand-made engineering feats and an overly ambitious one-man punk musical about the R101 airship of the 1930s. All performed with a plum. Or some other fruit. Star of BBC2’s Attention Scum and Radio 4’s Where Did It All Go Wrong? ‘There are more brilliant ideas in one of Simon Munnery’s shows than most comics will manage in a lifetime’ The Times £12.00 Concessions and Members £2.00 off

Multi award-winning company The Paper Birds present their critically acclaimed, sell-out show Thirsty. Based on our nation’s love affair with alcohol, Thirsty weaves together real stories, memories and boozebased confessions, collected from a ‘drunken hotline’ and an online questionnaire. A dynamic theatrical exploration delving beyond statistics, facts and figures, Thirsty looks to the faces and the voices of everyone who likes a drink and asks why, as a nation, are we so thirsty? ‘An energetic rollercoaster ride through the reasons that make so many of us reach for the bottle…, exuberantly performed’ The Telegraph £12.00 Concessions and Members £2.00 off School discounts apply

Save The Last Dance For Me Mon 23 – Sat 28 January From the producers, directors and writers of Dreamboats and Petticoats, Save the Last Dance For Me will take you back through the music and magic of the early ’60s, a time when each passing week brought another classic Rock ‘n’ Roll track. This nostalgic, feel-good musical journey will transport you back to music’s golden era as we follow two teenage sisters, Jennifer and Marie, through the summer of 1963. Full of freedom and high spirits they embark on a family holiday to the coast and a traditional seaside town. The young siblings soon discover much more than just sea and sand when they meet a handsome American airman, who invites them to a dance at the nearby United States Air force base. But young love and holiday romance is never that simple and the sisters soon realise that while the world around them is still watching itself in black and white, life and love can be much more colourful.

In 2002, John Osborne won a competition on John Peel’s Radio One show. His prize was a box of records that took eight years to listen to.

A tender, comic portrayal of one woman’s experience of love and war.

This five-star, sell-out smash theatre hit of the Edinburgh Festival, broadcast on BBC Radio Four in December 2011, is an ode to radio, those records and anyone who’s ever sought solace in the wireless.

The Winter’s Tale

Shakespeare’s The Winter’s Tale tells the story of a man consumed by an inexplicable jealousy that destroys his family, his kingdom and himself. Wracked by guilt, Leontes sets off a chain reaction of events leading to a miraculous climax and the chance of redemption. The greatest playwright writing at the height of his powers, this is poetry in motion. Internationally celebrated all-male company Propeller, led by director Edward Hall, returns to Sheffield following their criticallyacclaimed productions of Richard III and The Comedy Of Errors. Renowned for combining a rigorous approach to the text with an exciting, physical aesthetic, Propeller engages its audiences’ imaginations and brings fresh understanding to classic plays. ‘A beautifully acted evening. Paris 1945. Christiane waits for a ticket to England that will reunite her with her fiancé. While she waits, this irrepressible mademoiselle recounts the love story between her - an eccentric, acutely-myopic Parisian - and a tongue-tied English teacher from Staffordshire.

Inspired by Osborne’s acclaimed book Radio Head (Radio 4’s Book Of The Week), featuring records previously owned by Peel and a script edited by Joe Dunthorne (Submarine), this is an evening of pure joy.

A topsy turvy tale for grown-ups.

Take the urban street dance style electro - a dazzling mix of breaking, disco, vogue, popping and locking - off the streets of Paris, mix it up with some theatre, contemporary dance and an amazing soundtrack and you get Elektro Kif.

All is not well at Number 92. Mrs Benjamin has disappeared, leaving her decaying house to fend for itself. So in an act of desperation, the house, determined to find its missing owner, sets off on a strange and enchanting journey like no other.

A show about the hopes and fears, friendships, fights and rivalries of an all-male cast of eight exceptional young electro dancers this is funny, fast, colourful and anarchic.

This intriguing tale follows the story of a wall, a floor and a chimney, a forgotten old lady and the memories that lie within. With an inventive blend of clowning, visual theatre and puppetry Maison Foo bring to life the imaginative topsy turvy world lurking behind the door of Number 92.

Featuring an exhilarating soundtrack of techno with electro house, afrobeat, sampling and classical music, you’ve never seen anything like this before!

Continuing our tradition for producing whole seasons dedicated to the work of one writer, Sheffield Theatres is proud to present three plays by Michael Frayn. Taking place in each of our spaces, alongside a programme of readings, interviews and discussions, this season will offer you an opportunity to experience the range, scope and development of Michael’s work from three different decades of his career. I hope you will join us in celebrating the work of this major figure in British theatre.

Copenhagen By Michael Frayn Wed 29 February – Sat 10 March In 1941, at the height of the Second World War, two old friends meet for the last time. Niels Bohr, the leading quantum theorist of the time, half Jewish but remaining in occupied Copenhagen; Werner Heisenberg, a German and the former protégé of Bohr, working for his country on a new project. On opposing sides, these two men have the ability to change the course of history. This Tony Award-winning play is an intriguing and powerful exploration of the uncertainty of the past and the inevitability of the future told through a story based on actual historic events.

Matinee
