Welcome We are delighted to tell you about our spring 2014 season at Sheffield Theatres. In February, we celebrate the work of one of Northern Ireland’s most accomplished playwrights, Brian Friel. We present three of Friel’s plays across each of our auditoria and we are thrilled to announce that, following its staging in the Crucible Theatre, Translations will embark on a national tour. Later in the season, we present Sheffield Theatres’ first full-length dance-theatre piece, Kes, based on the classic Barnsley-set novel A Kestrel for a Knave by Barry Hines, and then Marc Camoletti’s classic farce Boeing Boeing. Sheffield People’s Theatre will also take to the Crucible Theatre once more with The Sheffield Mysteries. In the Lyceum Theatre, we welcome a wonderful variety of touring productions including Seven Brides for Seven Brothers, Fame, Brassed Off and One Man, Two Guvnors. In 2014, we hope to refurbish the Lyceum Theatre. We need to raise £100,000 ourselves (the total cost is £2 million) to make muchneeded improvements including installing air conditioning. When you buy your tickets this season, we’ll ask you if you can donate to this work and any contribution you make will be gratefully received. Loosely based on the Phaedra and Hippolytus myth, Living Quarters is a memory play told through a series of flashbacks. It looks back at the fateful day when Commander Butler returns home a hero from a successful UN mission to celebrate with his children and his new young wife, but a grim secret is revealed that disrupts the evening.

An hilarious antidote to the sentiments so movingly expressed in his earlier play Translations. Friel’s first farce is set in a remote Donegal peasant cottage which has been converted into a weekend retreat for members of the urban élite. Jack loans the cottage to his friend Tim, a shy linguistics lecturer, for one hour so that he may impress his girlfriend’s father, a domineering senator. However, not everything goes according to plan resulting in complications, cover-ups and confusion.

Adapted from Ivan Turgenev’s 1862 novel of the same name. In mid nineteenth century rural Russia, a brilliant, anarchic young medical student arrives at the provincial family villa of his best friend, Arkady, for the summer vacation. He wants to despise the family for their unshakable complacency, but he is tormented by conflicting emotions. His desperate action has tragic consequences.

National Theatre Connections festival at Sheffield Theatres is a great week of new work performed by young companies. There is a fantastic selection of challenging, interesting and exciting work for young people to come and watch. Luke Norris, Pauline McLynn, Sam Holcroft and Matt Hartley are amongst the playwrights this year.

A fantastic opportunity for those aged 14 - 17 years to work as part of the People’s Theatre and work with theatre professionals. Those interested need good availability from early December through to late March. Rehearsals will take place on Saturdays and weekday evenings, as well as during half term.

Sheffield People’s Theatre Needs You

April – June with performances on Mon 23 June or Tue 24 June

Sheffield People’s Theatre is our intergenerational theatre company, whose previous projects have included Lives in Art and 20 Tiny Plays About Sheffield. This season we are looking for those aged 12 plus who are interested in performing in a new play, The Sheffield Mysteries, which will be staged in the Crucible Theatre in July 2014 (see page 40).

Working with theatre professionals, schools will rehearse a production specially selected for Take the Stage. During the rehearsal process, schools will receive support and guidance from professionals, and work with experts in various artistic fields to develop and enhance their production based around Grimm’s Tales. Sheffield Theatres will work with a designer and transform the stage for these productions. On Mon 23 and Tue 24 June, three schools each evening will take to the Crucible stage to undertake a technical rehearsal and performance. £450.00* (Plus VAT) Maximum class size 35
