Welcome We are delighted to tell you about our spring 2014 season at Sheffield Theatres. In February, we celebrate the work of one of Northern Ireland’s most accomplished playwrights, Brian Friel. We present three of Friel’s plays across each of our auditoria and we are thrilled to announce that, following its staging in the Crucible Theatre, Translations will embark on a national tour. Later in the season, we present Sheffield Theatres’ first full-length dance-theatre piece, Kes, based on the classic Barnsley-set novel A Kestrel for a Knave by Barry Hines, and then Marc Camoletti’s classic farce Boeing Boeing. Sheffield People’s Theatre will also take to the Crucible Theatre once more with The Sheffield Mysteries. In the Lyceum Theatre, we welcome a wonderful variety of touring productions including Seven Brides for Seven Brothers, Fame, Brassed Off and One Man, Two Guvnors. In 2014, we hope to refurbish the Lyceum Theatre. We need to raise £100,000 ourselves (the total cost is £2 million) to make muchneeded improvements including installing air conditioning. When you buy your tickets this season, we’ll ask you if you can donate to this work and any contribution you make will be gratefully received. We’re really looking forward to welcoming you to Sheffield Theatres soon!

Continuing our tradition of producing whole seasons dedicated to the work of one writer, Sheffield Theatres is proud to present three plays by Brian Friel: Afterplay, Translations and Wonderful Tennessee. LIVING QUARTERS
THE COMMUNICATION CORD
FATHERS AND SONS
Fri 21 February 1.00pm
Fri 28 February 1.00pm
Fri 7 March 1.00pm
Loosely based on the Phaedra and Hippolytus myth, Living Quarters is a memory play told through a series of flashbacks. It looks back at the fateful day when Commander Butler returns home a hero from a successful UN mission to celebrate with his children and his new young wife, but a grim secret is revealed that disrupts the evening.
An hilarious antidote to the sentiments so movingly expressed in his earlier play Translations. Friel’s first farce is set in a remote Donegal peasant cottage which has been converted into a weekend retreat for members of the urban élite. Jack loans the cottage to his friend Tim, a shy linguistics lecturer, for one hour so that he may impress his girlfriend’s father, a domineering senator. However, not everything goes according to plan resulting in complications, cover-ups and confusion.
Adapted from Ivan Turgenev’s 1862 novel of the same name. In mid nineteenth century rural Russia, a brilliant, anarchic young medical student arrives at the provincial family villa of his best friend, Arkady, for the summer vacation. He wants to despise the family for their unshakable complacency, but he is tormented by conflicting emotions. His desperate action has tragic consequences.

Translations By Brian Friel
Thu 13 February – Sat 8 March 1833. Rural Ireland. The British Army arrives to translate Gaelic place names into the King’s English. Farm girl Máire finds herself torn between the affections of the local school teacher and the love of a British soldier, between her native tongue and a new language, between the comfort of the world she knows and the excitement of foreign possibilities. The resulting clash of cultures strikes at the heart of the community as they struggle to interpret a new language, and each other. What gets lost in translation?

ThickSkin presents
Chalk Farm
The People’s Songs
By Kieran Hurley and AJ Taudevin
Wed 12 March 7.30pm
Thu 3 & Fri 4 April 7.15pm
Spend an evening in the company of this popular and prolific TV and radio presenter, journalist, columnist and author as he talks about his new book and epic radio series, The People’s Songs, a social history of modern Britain told through pop singles. It’s a project that Stuart is both proud of and passionate about and tells the story of modern Britain through the records that we listened to and loved during the dramatic and kaleidoscopic period from the Second World War to the present day.
Award-winning playwrights Kieran Hurley and AJ Taudevin, join forces with highly-acclaimed ThickSkin (Blackout, The Static), in this explosive new play about love and blame in the aftermath of the 2011 London riots. Through a mother’s desire for safety and acceptance and a young boy’s need to be recognised, to be part of something, Chalk Farm offers an uncompromising and ultimately heartbreaking examination of a fractured society.
Known as co-host of the Radcliffe and Maconie Show on BBC Radio 6 Music, as well as The Freak Zone and The Freakier Zone on 6 Music, he has also written and presents dozens of other shows on BBC Radio and TV. As well as acclaimed official biographies of Blur and James, he is also one of the UK’s top selling travel writers, with Adventures on the High Teas bringing comparisons to Bill Bryson and The Times calling him a National Treasure.
‘A point marked in time when it all began to crack, when the game is over, when the surface is ripped open showing what the world really looks like. And we were there.’ Fresh from extraordinary critical and audience acclaim at the Edinburgh Fringe, Chalk Farm features ThickSkin’s trademark style of heartstopping visual theatre, fusing multi-media, movement and text.

But the arrival of flugelhorn-playing Gloria brings hope, romance and controversy to the Yorkshire brass band on the brink of collapse. Featuring rousing live music Brassed Off is a funny and heartwarming drama that reaches stirring heights as a locally cast brass band performs the final scene, set in the Royal Albert Hall, live on the stage of the Lyceum Theatre.
