Spora Stories presents
Pandora’s Box by Ade Solanke
Fri 19 – Sat 20 September ‘You think England is hard? Compared to Nigeria? My dear, you haven’t seen anything yet!’ On holiday with her streetwise son in Lagos, a British-Nigerian mother is in turmoil. Should she leave her only child in a strict Nigerian boarding school, or return him to the battlefields of inner London? A family spanning three generations and two continents meets in Lagos for the first time in over thirty years. But the joy of reunion also unleashes long-suppressed truths. An exuberant and thought-provoking mix of comedy, tragedy and family drama, Pandora’s Box reveals the heartbreak behind the difficult choices parents must make – and the price their children pay.
Bridget Christie A Bic for Her
Fri 26 September 7.45pm Bridget Christie (Bridget Christie Minds the Gap, News Quiz and Have I Got News for You) does not wear her feminism lightly. She wears it heavily, like a suit of armour. Mon 29 September 7.45pm Key (37 now) climbs into his poetry clothes and leans against his mic stand for another hour. Now charming, he will recollect simple tales of love, gaze dead-eyed at the ladies, recite verse and do basic talking. A lot of fairly grubby water’s sloshed under Key’s bridge of late so he’ll be churning that up. He’s also fairly interested to lift the lid on Hollywood. There’ll be some Indian poetry, Indian beer and, if he can get his act together, a spotlight. Other potential themes will be owls and maybe fairies. Edinburgh Comedy AwardWinner. Mum’s dead. Annoyingly, dad’s not. After 20 years apart, father and son meet again at her graveside. But can they say goodbye to mum without saying hello to each other? Wingman mixes poetry and prose to tell an achingly funny story that reminds us: no matter how bad life is, family can make it worse. A Forced Entertainment performance based on the award-winning novel The Notebook (1986), by Hungarian writer Ágota Kristóf. Directed by Tim Etchells, The Notebook tells the story of twin brothers evacuated to the Hungarian countryside during World War II, to stay at their impoverished grandmother’s farm. Paul Merton in Conversation Mon 20 October 7.30pm Known for his intelligent and often surreal humour, Paul Merton’s weekly appearances on BBC1’s Have I Got News For You have seen him become an artfully rebellious fixture in our lives for over 25 years. In Only When I Laugh, his rich and beautifully-observed autobiography, Paul takes us on an evocative journey from his working-class Fulham childhood to the present day. From his school days, his run-ins with the nuns, his meatpacking job, his repeated attempts to break into the world of comedy and his success in the 1980s alternative cabaret scene, to the terrifying manic episode which landed him in the Maudesley hospital, Paul Merton tells his life story entertainingly, with warmth, candour and wit.

Rory McGrath and Philip Pope
Wed 1 October 8.00pm In a fast follow up to In (and out of) His Mind, Robin Ince continues to prod into our brains with a sharpened pencil to try and work out just how much free will anyone can have. Is anyone a freethinker? Looking at Milgram, McLuhan and experiments into the mind, Robin tries to work out if we can arm ourselves against mass media despots and live life pragmatically or will we always just be clumsy animals justifying each mistake with a well-honed alibi? Well, it will be something like that - basically, another night of shouting, gesticulating, gurning and enquiring - a curious mind and id on the rampage.
After a total run at the Edinburgh Fringe 2013, Evans is back with more ‘Sizzlingly entertaining, beautifully crafted, devastatingly funny gags’ (The Guardian). by Mike Kenny
Wed 10 December 2014 – Sat 3 January 2015 Do you want to hear a true story? Well… imagine a place where what you see is not what it seems, A secret place with a hidden castle and hidden stories, A place where the Princesses don’t know they are Princesses and the Princes don’t really want to become Kings, A place where appearances can be deceptive!
Family Ticket (4 people, max 2 adults) £25.00 For more information on concessions see p34
For everyone over the age of 3
Do you want to hear an exciting story? Then imagine one wintry stormy night everything changes, The east wind blows through the castle of secrets, blowing away the cobwebs, lifting high the royal mattresses, ruffling feathers and unsettling all who live there. Do you want to hear a happy story? Then imagine a real Prince and a real Princess, oh and a pea! In this new fantastical adaptation of Hans Christian Anderson’s The Princess and the Pea, Mike Kenny and the inventive tutti frutti team create a funny, original, beautiful retelling of this familiar tale. Not for the faint hearted… fake Princesses… or those who have trouble sleeping at night! A transaction fee of £1.50 (£1.00 online) applies to all bookings made at the Box Office (excl. cash).

Moscow City Ballet
Blood Brothers
Swan Lake
Tue 13 – Sat 24 January
Tue 6 – Sat 10 January
Written by Willy Russell, the legendary Blood Brothers tells the captivating and moving tale of twins who, separated at birth, grow up on opposite sides of the tracks, only to meet again with fateful consequences. The superb score includes Bright New Day, Marilyn Monroe and the emotionally charged hit Tell Me It’s Not True.
Moscow City Ballet is currently at its outstanding artistic best – winning new invitations to perform internationally. Swan Lake is the signature piece of their entire repertoire. The orchestra, choreography, interpretation, beauty and outstanding virtuoso performance wins repeatedly rave reviews. Tchaikovsky’s ‘big story ballets’ are the essence of Russian culture composed, choreographed and premiered in Russia. Seeing performances by the Moscow City dancers never fails to add that magical ingredient of Russian soul. ‘Liliya Oryekhova plays the dual roles of Odette / Odile. Her amazing mannerisms and her ability as a dancer confirm that she is, most definitely, a prima ballerina of the highest order’ WhatsOnStage
Few musicals have received quite such acclaim as the multi award-winning Blood Brothers. Bill Kenwright’s production surpassed 10,000 performances in London’s West End, one of only three musicals ever to achieve that milestone. It has been affectionately christened the Standing Ovation Musical, as inevitably it; ‘brings the audience cheering to its feet and roaring its approval’ Daily Mail. ‘A triumphant evening...Unmissable and unbeatable’ The Spectator
