Welcome We’re delighted to share our new season with you. We’re thrilled that following its £1.9million refurbishment, the Lyceum Theatre is now open and will play host to a huge array of the most exciting touring productions. We’d like to thank you, our audience, for donating generously to the project and helping us realise our ambitions. As for our home-grown productions, we recently pledged to significantly increase the number of women working on our productions, both on stage and behind the scenes as part of the Advance programme. We’re proud that our new season reflects this commitment and our writer’s season will celebrate the work of a great English female playwright – Sarah Kane. There’s so much on offer this season that we can’t wait to get started and look forward to welcoming you to the theatre soon. Dan Bates Chief Executive

Tue 13 – Sat 24 January Written by Willy Russell, the legendary Blood Brothers tells the captivating and moving tale of twins who, separated at birth, grow up on opposite sides of the tracks, only to meet again with fateful consequences. The superb score includes Bright New Day, Marilyn Monroe and the emotionally charged hit Tell Me It’s Not True. Few musicals have received quite such acclaim as the multi award-winning Blood Brothers. Bill Kenwright’s production surpassed 10,000 performances in London’s West End, one of only three musicals ever to achieve that milestone. It has been affectionately christened the Standing Ovation Musical, as inevitably it ‘brings the audience cheering to its feet and roaring its approval’ Daily Mail. ‘A triumphant evening... unmissable and unbeatable’ The Spectator

Beckie Darlington presents Gate Theatre’s production of
Grounded By George Brant
Wed 21 – Sat 24 January She’s a hot-rod F16 fighter pilot. She’s pregnant. Her career in the sky is over. Now, she sits in an air-conditioned trailer in Las Vegas flying remote-controlled drones over the Middle East. She struggles through surreal 12-hour shifts far from the battlefield, hunting terrorists by day and being a wife and mother by night. Grounded is a gripping, compulsive new play that flies from the heights of lyricism to the shallows of workaday existence. This extraordinary play targets our assumptions about war, family, and what it is to be a woman. Through courage and compassion, lawyer Atticus Finch seeks the truth, and his feisty daughter, Scout - a young girl on the cusp of adulthood - brings new hope to a neighbourhood in turmoil. This utterly enchanting and enthralling production from London’s award-winning Regent’s Park Theatre captures the warmth and poignancy of this best-loved classic with genuine heart and emotional depth. Sheffield Theatres presents
I had the great privilege of knowing Sarah Kane. I got to act in two world premières of her plays. In fact, I actually got to act alongside her when she stepped in at the last moment to take over from the leading lady, who had injured her spine late on in the run. I remember how ‘real’ Sarah’s acting was. She made our acting look fake and theatrical. Looking back at her brief career fifteen years after her death, I realise that her acting was characteristic of what I remember most about her as a person and as a writer. She was a truthseeker. She believed passionately that there wasn’t anything that couldn’t be represented in the theatre, however beautiful or cruel. If something existed, then it could (and should) be portrayed and discussed. She is undoubtedly one of the most courageous people I’ve known and I’m delighted to be presenting a season of her work here in Sheffield.
In her own way, Sarah Kane’s writing changed the face of British Theatre. Much has been said and written about her death, but it’s important to say that Sarah had a wonderful, dark sense of humour - and a huge heart. Her plays are full of tenderness and a yearning for love. During our season, there’ll be an opportunity to see her complete works - in full productions, in semi-staged readings and also on film. I hope you’ll join us.

Leeds. An expensive hotel room.
In an unknown city, four unnamed voices begin a poetic ode to love. A one act epic, Crave mines the darkest depths of desire and what it means to love and be loved.
A middle-aged man attempts to seduce a young woman. Suddenly, there is a knock on the door and their world turns upside down. What happens next pushes us beyond the edge of our darkest imaginings, smashes through our comfortable reality and demands that we question our own morality and humanity. First performed twenty years ago, Blasted’s power remains. Age guidance 15+ The play contains strong language and scenes of a sexual and violent nature. With Reece Dinsdale (Coronation Street) It’s now or never for George Jones. The charismatic leader of the Labour Party needs to get out of opposition and into Number Ten. Plagued by a hostile media, beset by divisions in his party and haunted by his own demons, George has three weeks to convince the Great British Public that he’s their man. But how much compromise is he prepared to make? How can you truly appeal to the man in the street from the House of Commons? And which tie should he wear for Prime Minister’s Questions? Playing for Time By Arthur Miller Based on the memoir by Fania Fénelon Thu 12 March – Sat 4 April Fania Fénelon: Musical maestra. Celebrity singer. Star of the Paris cabaret. Jew. Arrested by the Nazis and transported east to Auschwitz, Fania’s tragic fate seems sealed. But amidst the horrors of the death camp, there is one small glimmer of hope: an orchestra of women prisoners kept alive to make music for their Nazi captors. Can Fania sing for her survival? Based upon Fania Fénelon’s autobiographical memoir, Arthur Miller’s masterful stage adaptation is a life-affirming story of the survival of the human spirit in the face of unimaginable horror. La bohème
The Siege of Calais
Written and performed by Caroline Horton Directed by Lucy Doherty
By Giacomo Puccini
By Gaetano Donizetti
Mon 30 March 7.45pm
Tue 31 March 7.45pm
A group of struggling artists discover love and loss in this evening of heart-rending emotions, laughs and tears set in 19th Century Paris.
The Siege of Calais (L’assedio di Calais) enjoyed its first ever UK professional tour as part of ETO’s spring 2013 season, and was acclaimed as one of the company’s greatest achievements. Constructed of bel canto arias and ensembles of extraordinary quality, it tells the story of the citizens of Calais who offer up their lives to save their city from the besieging English army. Proud, fierce, exhilarating – this is history on stage, with thrilling music.
Mon 30 March 7.45pm Welcome to Ithaca: island paradise and home to Penelope. She’s married to a world famous war hero and she’s had enough of waiting quietly. Made with input from soldiers and military spouses, Penelope RETOLD is an irreverent collision of classic myth, The Odyssey, and contemporary rage. Get ready for a theatrical storm that sweeps through poetry, songs, comedy and YouTube clips towards a poignant and furious conclusion. Olivier Award nominee and Stage Best Solo Performer, Caroline Horton, presents an epic, heartbreaking and fiercely playful tale of love, loneliness and the need to be free. Suitable for all audiences aged 13+
La bohème is a story of young love, starting on Christmas Eve in a Parisian garret. On this festive, snowy night the lovers draw close, but poverty and ill-health force them apart. Their story is told in the most memorable music, from Che gelida manina to the shattering brass chords announcing Mimi’s death. ETO’s new production promises to break every heart and breathe joy into the spirit of everyone who has ever wanted love. New production, sung in Italian with English surtitles.
Revival, sung in Italian with English surtitles.

As compelling today as it was at its inception over forty years ago, Jesus Christ Superstar has some of musical theatre’s most legendary songs from I Don’t Know How to Love Him, Everything’s Alright, and Gethsemane through to, of course, Superstar.
