@sheffdocfest | #sheffdocfest
Welcome to your Festival.
A huge Doc/Fest welcome to everyone who loves a good story. Here’s to six unmissable Festival days of the world’s best documentaries, talks, virtual reality and interactive experiences. What a difference a year makes. We’re reeling from seismic change, as we witness events that we know will become the most pored over scenes in future documentaries.
Sheffield is a city of makers – from steel to beer to robots to documentary makers. From young smartphone filmmakers to award-winning greats, we love that everyone has a story to tell. I can’t wait to see you at the Opening Night of Daisy Asquith’s Queerama (p.22) at City Hall.
Welcome
What are the stories of our new world? Doc/Fest 2017 is brimming with documentaries funny and quirky, powerful and influential, heart-stopping and heart breaking. Nick Broomfield premieres his film about Whitney Houston, Whitney “Can I Be Me” (p.25). We mark the murder of Jo Cox, West Yorkshire’s MP for Batley and Spen, with a special Closing Night Film about her life (p.22). Mr Gay Syria (p.42) shows beauty in the middle of crisis. Be mesmerised by the fireworks in Brimstone and Glory (p.31). Test your zombie fear levels in Spookers (p.24), and dance off to Bruk Out! (p.45).
In Talks, Private Eye’s Ian Hislop discusses truth and satire with Jolyon Rubinstein (p.84), and Stacey Dooley gives the inside track on investigative documentaries (p.82). We welcome Peter Greenaway CBE to discuss innovation in storytelling (p.83), and Sir Lenny Henry talks the blues (p.83).
Liz McIntyre
CEO & Festival Director
In Doc/Fest’s Alternate Realities programme, enter DOOM ROOM (p.23) if you dare, and be the first to experience Future Aleppo (p.71), a new Doc/Fest commission by artists Alex Pearson and Marshmallow Laser Feast, produced in collaboration with Mohammed Kteish, a 15-year-old Syrian boy with a big vision for rebuilding his city.

Risk
Whitney “Can I Be Me”
The UK Premiere of Laura Poitras’ revealing new work followed by a special Q&A. Filmed over six years, Poitras brings viewers closer than they have ever been before to Julian Assange and those who surround him. Risk is a portrait of power, principles, betrayal, and sacrifice when the stakes could not be any higher. From the director of the Academy Award-winning CITIZENFOUR.
Notorious British director Nick Broomfield (Kurt & Courtney, Biggie & Tupac) joins us for an extended Q&A after the UK Premiere of his latest film. Whitney Houston was a sure thing, or as sure as the music industry had ever seen. A transcendent talent with pedigree and mentorship to match, she was going to be the greatest female vocalist ever. For a time she was, and then she all-toopublicly fell short.

Doc/Question Time: Is the media failing to reflect the opinions of the people?
Guests from the film and media industry and political world will explore the rise of popular right wing politics, the effect of the ‘liberal echo chamber’, and discuss how these changing times are reflected (or not) in today’s media. This will be an opportunity to voice your own opinion and to hear a distinguished panel of speakers debate the issues affecting both the UK and global landscapes.
Ian Hislop, the editor of the satirical news magazine Private Eye and team captain on Have I Got News for You comes to Sheffield Doc/Fest for the first time. In conversation with the BAFTA-winning actor and satirist Jolyon Rubinstein (The Revolution Will Be Televised, Revolting ), Ian will explore the role that satire plays in documenting our world and getting to the truth, and how the medium reflects a political landscape that includes living, breathing caricatures.
