Welcome A big Sheffield welcome to Doc/Fest: Ways of Seeing – six days of films, live events, digital art, talks, parties and more across the City of Makers.
Having prepared our 2019 edition to the rumble of constant news alerts updating on somewhat divisive global events, the Doc/Fest team is proud to present a programme which shows the world in all its glorious shades of grey.
Welcome
Ways of Seeing offers multiple images of the world, and multiple perspectives of our part in it. Our tagline is inspired by John Berger’s television series and book of the same name, with the programme giving a platform to a spectrum of voices, which together share, shape, and question the stories of our time. Our Film Programme includes a vast line-up of 180+ titles by documentary makers who challenge world views, and in so doing, open up our own. We’re thrilled to be welcoming Ai Weiwei, Anand Patwardhan, Asif Kapadia, Jeanie Finlay, Nanfu Wang, Waad al-Kateab, Werner Herzog, and many more to Sheffield from countries around the world. Each year Doc/Fest attracts filmmakers from the world over, but we also offer our solidarity to those documentary makers unable to make it to Sheffield due to restrictions to their rights to travel. Music features heavily at Doc/Fest as always, celebrating sound and song as a creative act of protest, with docs featuring PJ Harvey and Leonard Cohen, and with Kate Nash coming to perform following her premiere of Underestimate the Girl, and director Rita Maia attending to DJ a party following the premiere of Lisbon Beat. Our retrospective, Shapes That Move, looks at collective filmmaking as an act of feminist solidarity. Our country focus brings talent from Japan to Sheffield, including noise rock band Bo Ningen who will play alongside shorts from radical filmmaker Toshio Matsumoto.
4
Doc/Fest also offers new ways of seeing through cutting-edge technologies, as part of our digital arts exhibition, Alternate Realities. Our festival commission, Spectre, harvests personal data to test our understanding of truth, while other works use interactive and immersive narratives to highlight tales of injustice, with a focus on LGBTQI+ stories in Another Dream, Through the Wardrobe, and Interactive Portraits: Trans People in Japan. As part of our Live Events programme, another new commission for the festival is The Lovers Table, which offers a contemporary template for a moving image led symposium, curated by artists Kazim Rashid and Lotte Andersen. Our Talks programme engages emerging and established documentary makers, each giving an insight into their practice, and how they aim to effect change through their work: we welcome Werner Herzog to discuss his acclaimed career and latest film: Nomad: In the Footsteps of Bruce Chatwin; Chidera ‘The Slumflower’ Eggerue will be in Sheffield to spread her message of body positivity and talk about her first venture in to documentary; Jenn Nkiru speaks about her explorations of black universality in BLACK TO TECHNO; and Paul Greengrass makes a passionate plea for more working class voices in film and television. Beyond the programme, Doc/Fest is primarily a place to connect, to meet fellow documentary makers and documentary lovers - whether in our market, festival hub: The Exchange, or at our (in)famous parties. See you in Sheffield – in the cinema and on the dancefloor.
Melanie Iredale Interim Director
Welcome Welcome to Sheffield Doc/Fest 2019.
As I write this, Sheffield has just got a football team in the Premier League for the first time in a decade. Back in the 70s, Sheffield United very nearly pulled off the transfer coup of the century, offering the princely sum of £200,000 to bring a young Argentinian prodigy to Bramall Lane. Sadly the deal fell through as the Blades couldn’t find the extra cash demanded by the player. But 41 years later, Doc/Fest is finally bringing Diego Maradona to Sheffield, in the shape of Asif Kapadia’s brilliant new film, which opens (I am struggling to avoid saying “kicks off”) this year’s festival. Asif’s film is firmly in the tradition of his previous portraits of Amy Winehouse and Ayrton Senna – wild, irreverent and compelling. We’re in for a treat.
As always, there’s an intoxicating range of films on offer. Coinciding with the dates of the Women’s World Cup, a very different portrait of the beautiful game emerges from Khartoum Offside by Marwa Zein, where a team of Sudanese women footballers are intent on defying their country’s policy which discourages women from participating in sport. And in contrast to Rodney P’s beats, Nick Broomfield is back with his new film telling the love story between Leonard Cohen and his legendary muse and lover Marianne Ihlen.
Indeed, thank you to all of our sponsors who help make this fantastic festival happen. In particular, Sheffield City Council, not just for their financial support but for the close working relationship we have developed over the years. I feel Doc/Fest really belongs to the city now and the council must take a lot of credit for that. Special thanks to Paul Billington, who is taking early retirement this year, for his unstinting support and encouragement. Thanks also to the British Film Institute – we’re delighted to say we have just agreed another multi-year agreement with them. And also for the first time, we have a multi-year partnership in place with Wellcome, supporting the hugely popular Doc/Fest Exchange. The British Council helps us bring together so many international documentary makers from all over the world; Creative Europe supports our international marketplace, which allows these great movies to find funding in the first place; and last but not least our Broadcast partners – BBC, ITV and Channel 4 – who provide not only finance but brilliant content and talent too.
Welcome
Diego is not the only star attraction however. This year we welcome eminent director Paul Greengrass to talk about his journey from investigative TV documentaries to Hollywood blockbusters. We have Stacey Dooley talking about her confronting documentaries… and maybe Strictly Come Dancing too; Rodney P talking hip hop, grime and beyond, and Nick Hornby assembling his mixtape of favourite documentaries in Desert Island Docs.
We’re thrilled that our Alternate Realities exhibition is returning to its spiritual home in the revamped and expanded Site Gallery and of course running alongside the exhibition will be the Alternate Realities Summit and the Alternate Realities Talent Market. Thanks to Arts Council England for supporting all of our Alternate Realities work and making us part of their National Portfolio.
Finally, a special thanks to Interim Director Melanie Iredale who has stepped up brilliantly this year and to her remarkable, prodigiously talented team. It’s a pleasure to work with each and every one of you. And of course thanks to all of you who every year make Sheffield what it is – the smartest, sassiest and friendliest festival in the world.

Festival Info Accessibility at the Festival
This year we’re working with a team of British Sign Language interpreters to make as much of the Talks programme available to BSL users as possible. If you are a BSL user and would like to attend one of our Talks, please contact us through the channels below and we will endeavour to meet your needs. Talks in the Doc/Fest Exchange will be live captioned on screen. To find out which of our Talks are already being BSL interpreted or live captioned, and to see an up-to-date list of subtitled or close captioned films, please visit: sheffdocfest.com/view/accessibility
Relaxed screenings are great for anyone who might benefit from a calmer environment; so lighting is softer, the volume is lower and staff are specially trained. They’re open to all but particularly ideal for people with an autism spectrum disorder, sensory or communication disorder, a learning disability or age-related impairments.
Age Ratings
We screen films prior to their distribution meaning that some films may not have an age rating at the time of going to print. In these cases, the film will be listed as Rating TBC and are accessible to those aged 18+ only. We are updating our ratings regularly so please check our website for the most up to date information. For guidance on age ratings for the Alternate Realities Exhibition and VR Cinema projects, please refer to the programme online. Subtitles Please note that all films marked [S] for subtitled are done so at the discretion of the filmmaker. The festival cannot guarantee standard. All information is correct at the time of printing. Sheffield Doc/Fest reserve the right to make changes and updates. ht Spotlight Spotlight Spotlight Sp
Premiere screenings and deep conversations with contemporary masters of non-fiction cinema. Capturing reality is a messy art form: never distant from the events unfolding on screen, slicing up stories that live beyond the film. This year we are introducing Spotlight conversations to embrace the story beyond the film. Spotlight creates a forum for discussion, debate and learning by framing a series of films with poignant, pressing and prescient conversations on the art and subjects of non-fiction cinema.

Spotlight Opening Night Film
Spotlight
Diego Maradona
+ Conversation with Asif Kapadia
Thu 6 Jun / 18:00 / Sheffield City Hall / ÂŁ12/ ÂŁ10
Our opening night film will be the UK premiere of Diego Maradona, a revealing and immersive work of archival craft. Having never won a major tournament, SSC Napoli had always underachieved. But when Diego Maradona arrived in 1984, all hell broke loose. In a city where the devil would have needed bodyguards, Maradona became bigger than God himself. This is the wild and unforgettable story of a God-given talent, glory, despair and betrayal, of corruption and ultimately redemption. See p.43 for further screenings 24
Spotlight The Rest
+ Conversation With Ai Weiwei
Fri 7 June / 18:00 / Crucible Theatre
The Rest is a film about refugees who fled war and persecution and arrived in Europe, the world’s bastion of human rights, yet have not found the safe havens of their dreams. Instead, they now live in limbo within a disintegrating humanitarian aid system, no longer the centre of media attention. The film is a mirror of the European political zeitgeist, demonstrating how pan-European values of liberalism and democracy have largely failed in practice. See p.69 for further screenings
Spotlight
Seahorse
+ Conversation with Jeanie Finlay and Freddy McConnell Sat 8 June / 15:00 / Bertha DocHouse Showroom 4
Freddy is 30 and yearns to start a family but this poses unique challenges. He is a gay transgender man. Deciding to carry his own baby took years of soul searching, but he was unprepared for the reality of pregnancy, both physically and challenging society’s fundamental understanding of gender and family. Against a backdrop of hostility towards trans people, he is forced to confront his naivety. See p.58 for further screenings
25
Spotlight For Sama
+ Conversation with Waad al-Kateab and Edward Watts, hosted by Jon Snow Sat 8 June / 18:00 / Bertha DocHouse Showroom 4
Told as a message from a young Syrian mother Waad al-Kateab to her daughter, For Sama traces Waad’s life through five years of the uprising in Aleppo as she falls in love, gets married and gives birth. An intimate, visceral documentary about the female experience of war, Waad’s camera captures incredible stories of loss, laughter and survival as she wrestles with an impossible choice – whether or not to flee the city to protect her daughter’s life. Spotlight
See p.49 for further screenings
Untouchable
+ Conversation with Ursula Macfarlane
Sat 8 June / 18:00 / Crucible Theatre
The inside story of the meteoric rise and monstrous fall of movie titan Harvey Weinstein, revealing how Weinstein acquired and deployed his formidable power over the course of decades. Former staffers, college friends, and reporters reflect upon the public perception of Weinstein as a visionary, while detailing his ruthless attempts to preserve his power as scandal threatened to engulf him. See p.70 for further screenings
26
Spotlight Nomad: In the Footsteps of Bruce Chatwin
+ Conversation with Werner Herzog Sat 8 June / 21:15 / Crucible Theatre
When British writer and adventurer Bruce Chatwin was dying of AIDS, he gave his friend Werner Herzog the rucksack that he carried on all of his adventures around the world. Now, three decades later, carrying the rucksack, Herzog sets out on his own journey inspired by Chatwin’s passion for the nomadic life. See p.45 for further screenings
Spotlight
A Dog Called Money
+ Conversation with Seamus Murphy Sat 8 June / 21:30 / Bertha DocHouse Showroom 4
Award-winning photographer Seamus Murphy has made an illuminating film that investigates the creative process behind his project with PJ Harvey. While tracing the sources of her songs and detailing the journey of their birth, he brings to life the people and places at their very heart. The artist and creative act are unfolded in fragmented scenes of inspiration and musical process. See p.61 for further screenings
27
Spotlight Marianne & Leonard: Words of Love + Conversation with Nick Broomfield
Sun 9 June / 18:15 / Crucible Theatre
Leonard Cohen and Marianne Ihlen’s love began on the idyllic Greek island of Hydra in 1960 as part of a bohemian community of foreign artists, writers and musicians. The Justice Syndicate
Sat 8 & Sun 9 June / 12:00, 14:45, 17:30 / ITV Town Hall Committee Room 1 / £10/ £8
A top surgeon accused of a serious crime. Conviction would mean planned operations will not go ahead – and the evidence is far from conclusive. The Justice Syndicate is a piece of playable theatre drawing on a jury format. It asks how we fill in the gaps, how we deal with our preconceptions, and how being part of a group can affect all this. Power and privilege; trust and technology; thought and action. How will you vote? A collaboration between recovering theatre company fanSHEN, computational artist Joe McAlister and neuroscientist Dr Kris De Meyer. Contains both discussion of sexual assault and explicit description of consensual sexual activity.

Would you rather get to know yourself so well, that you can no longer be manipulated? You will be measured and judged on the data trail you leave behind during the show. Toshio Matsumoto Shorts + Bo Ningen Live
Mon 10 June / 20:30 / The Leadmill / £10/ £8
In this meeting of Japanese psychedelia, Doc/Fest presents a chronology of rarely seen seminal short films of Toshio Matsumoto (1931-2017) with a sensory wave of sound from contemporary noise rock band Bo Ningen. From the mechanic rhythm of textile production in his early documentary film work The Weavers of Nishijin (1961) to the weaving of frames within frames in video work Engram (1987), Matsumoto’s world reverberates with cuts in observation and sound. Bo Ningen’s performance fuses disparate sounds and influences into a fierce, eclectic torrent of grooves. For further information, see p.85

Where will change emerge from? From the marginalised or from within? What questions need to be asked, how will they be vocalised? By whom? This year’s programme reflects a global wave of socio-political malaise and seeds of contestation for new order. The cinema is a portal to infinite identities and horizons, brooding epics are punctuated by illuminous scenes, worlds contract to minutes, moments expand to hours, hearts thump out of time.

Films A Soft Rebellion in Paradise
Conceived in response to Sheffield’s proud history as a city known for its political activism, and more especially as the city where the UK’s first women’s suffrage organisation was founded in 1851, artist Chloë Brown questions the systematic contemporary and historical silencing of woman’s voices. The film was shot on location in Paradise Square, the historical site of many protests, and was produced by an all-female cast and crew. A Soft Rebellion in Paradise proposes a powerful invocation, a call-to-arms for the voices of women to be heard. This is the international premiere of A Soft Rebellion in Paradise, commissioned by Arts Council England through Sheffield Culture Consortium.

As we move into a world in which our interaction with information starts as soon as we walk through the door, the role of experience design is becoming more and more important. A seasoned practitioner in designing experiments for ‘real’ reality, Tea Uglow gives insight on how to create for the cleverest machine we have: the brain.
To this day radio, by far, is the dominant mass medium in Africa. Future Lab Africa is an experimentation in the most intimate space, between your ears, with an audible treat that inspires us to cultivate new ideas about the future and the future of storytelling.

Throughout history semen has been revered as a magical substance – a totem of literal and symbolic potency. Described variously as ‘life force’, ‘substance of the soul’ and ‘that which sows the seeds of virtue in the female soul’. Bio artist Charlotte Jarvis aims to re-write this cultural narrative; using art and science to disrupt the hierarchy.
The Alternate Realities team take to the stage to share some closing thoughts, invite some lucky participants to join the Social Sorting Experiment and encourage everyone else to meet the Alternate Realities artists for drinks at Site Gallery (p.138).

A curated day of panel sessions dedicated to the techniques that go into non-fiction filmmaking, from shorts to features. Craft Summit: Through the Eyes of the Other
Sat 8 June / 10:00 / ITV Town Hall Reception Room A
Sat 8 June / 11:00 / ITV Town Hall Reception Room A
We explore the craft of directing through films in this year’s Doc/Fest that focus on a central character. Taking us deep into their films and filmic method, directors on the panel will explore their approaches to character and taking the audience into their world. How does the relationship work, and what happens if it goes wrong?
Some say that the cutting room is where the real documentary magic happens. With stories from their recent work, hear the insight and experience of leading editors on their role in the creative process. What’s the relationship between director and editor in the cutting room? How different is editing for TV and cinema? And should the director always be close to the edit?

Sat 8 June / 15:00 / ITV Town Hall Reception Room A
How do documentary filmmakers tackle the most taboo of subjects and tell stories that can’t be shared openly, while respecting the ethical, legal and personal sensitivities of the people involved? This session will look at radical and hybrid formats in bringing such subjects to screen, and explore the innovative techniques used by directors working in film and TV.
Sound is sometimes sidelined by the dominance of image and story in documentary making. And yet it can have a powerful effect on the audience, working in a more evocative and subliminal way on our perception of the film. Focussing on documentaries at this year’s festival which immerse the audience in sound, we will explore with their designers how the audio landscape is integral to the cinematic experience.

Images of the natural world - and humankind’s impact on it - are a powerful way to raise awareness and encourage action. But does showing the beauty of the natural world detract from what we’re doing to it? What are the different ways to film environmental stories? In this session, cinematographers will discuss their approaches, and give us behind the scenes stories to their most memorable shots.
What are the aesthetics of filmmaking using smartphones? Is the way we make documentaries changing fast enough to adapt to the ways people are viewing them? Filmmakers coming at short filmmaking from different perspectives will talk about their own work, how the equipment they use changes what they can make, and how the way they make their films helps in finding their audience.

Sun 9 June / 11:00 – 12:30 / Cutlers’ Hall, Main Hall
The marketplace for pitching documentaries is highly competitive. Thousands of ideas are vying for support from industry Decision Makers whose attention is often difficult to access. There are numerous hoops to jump through, boxes to tick and important elements to have in place that determine which proposals gain traction, and which struggle. In this session, forum organisers will share advice and insights about pitching and explain how to make your proposal stand out from the rest.
The number one reason delegates come to Doc/Fest is to meet. So let’s do this! Whether you’re looking to find new collaborators for your next film, contribute to someone else’s project, or simply expand your network of doc enthusiasts, get yourself to this mixer. The format is simple: take a seat, chat with the delegate opposite, every 10 mins we’ll ring the bell, move one seat to the left, meet someone new. All festival delegates welcome.

Meet the Distributors

Sun 9 June / 16:00 – 17:00 / Cutlers’ Hall, Hadfield Hall
‘What’s the story?’ It’s the question documentary filmmakers must answer when pitching new ideas to commissioners. A contained cast of central characters and coherent narrative has become the preferred form among most industry gatekeepers. Why is this? And what space is there for documentaries that aren’t structured around character-led linear stories? In reference to a recently published manifesto called ‘Beyond Story’ (Alexandra Juhasz and Alisa Lebow) this session will interrogate the supremacy of story and think together with commissioners, filmmakers and academics about the creative possibilities of documentary beyond story.
A chance to find out more about how distributors handle a doc’s delivery to the audience by managing and marketing its journey through the various exhibition platforms. In this session, we invite executives from different distribution companies to introduce themselves, explain how they work with filmmakers and comment on the kinds of documentaries they are seeking with reference to recent examples. Following the presentations, there will be time for filmmakers to connect with distributors and exchange business cards.
