Our mission is to inform, inspire and engage deeply with the University of Michigan campus community at the intersection of student and professional life within the fashion industry. SHIFT is intended to provide a marketable media platform for students to push the boundaries of what has traditionally been possible within print without compromising the level of quality associated with the SHEI brand.

a new year, a new beginning New Years is a time of change and evolution, a time for taking that first step of a new journey, and for discovering what is truly important in our lives. January is where we take the time to acknowlege where we came from, and to set goals for where we are going.

I

t is a time to acknowledge the value of tradition, and yet to allow ourselves to move forward. As we ring in the New Year, here at SHEI, we are doing just that. Over the past semester, our writers, photographers, graphic designers, videographers, models and stylists had the opportunity to discover what moves them. We can’t allow that remarkable momentum to die out, and this January, our members continue to work and to play, to aspire, inspire, and to create within SHEI’s newest digital platform. SHIFT, is our response to the evolution of the global digital marketplace, where fashion is among one of the most rapidly changing industries, and requires a flexible, growthoriented platform that adapts just as quickly both in content and character. Here at SHEI, our members have begun to use SHIFT as a opportunity to explore relevant, timely issues in the industry and in our home-town of Ann Arbor in longform articles that have not previously been possible in our Print Edition, or on our website.

As this issue has taken shape, our members have begun to put down roots in the artistic and entrepenurial communities on campus with the development of an interview-based column about the up and comming leaders within the University of Michigan. As SHEI increases our interactivity with campus, we hope to add value to the organizations that we partner with and give our own members wider journalistic experience. The talent and energy on our campus is palpable, especially at this change-oriented time of year, as we shift into the new semester, we look back to our tradition of print, and forward to a bright, digital future.

IN THIS ISSUE ABOUT THE COVER:

Fashion + Video // Let’s have a toast for the Uniform. From the streets to the studio, the modern streetwear blends urban grunge with classics like the crisp Oxford. We were inspired by another uniform, featured in Kanye West’s “Runaway,” and we couldn’t help but bring in the girls. The Bodysuit, a staple of female streetwear, traces its’ origen to the leotards popularized in the eighties by celebrities like Jane Fonda. In Corps de Ballet, we challanged the idea that menswear has to be formal and juxtaposed the funtionality of the modern male uniform with the rarefied environment of the dance studio.

detroit: shi

he city of Detroit lies directly across from Windsor, Canada, slightly separated from its neighbor by political distinction and the river that shares its name. From far away, the skyline dominated by the Renaissance Center looks just like its Canadian counterpart, but the city to which it belongs harbors a history unlike that of any other place. Simultaneously the capital of the automotive industry and national metonym for racial divides and economic hardship, Detroit looks back on a past flushed with success as well as loss. The city flourished for many years and grew to become the fourth largest city in the United States in 1950, but its prosperity took a hit in the wake of outsourcing, race riots and eventually suburbanization. Without much demand for city dwelling, Detroit’s population dwindled, and in 2008 the recession hit without mercy. As the central hub for all things vehicular, Detroit’s prosperity, or lack thereof, has been closely linked to the success of the automotive companies located there. As a result, Detroit experienced a devastating population decline during the recession, going from 910,921 inhabitants in July of 2009 to 711,299 by July of 2010. In a matter of a single year, Detroit lost over one-fifth of its population. In addition, the city filed for the largest municipal bankruptcy case in the history of the United States in 2013, became a hallmark for great urban decline, and the home to countless abandoned buildings. But recently it seems as if Detroit’s consistent streak of

o7

hardships and bad luck may be diminishing. While Detroit was the largest city to file for bankruptcy, it also became the largest US city to exit Chapter 9 bankruptcy on December 11, 2014. Detroit’s slow but steady improvements are beginning to recreate its once glittering reputation as a booming and exciting town. With the help of some influential businesses and various new attractions, Detroit is once again becoming a city to watch. During the holiday season the city lights up a 60-foot Christmas tree resting on top of Woodward Plaza. The bright tree lies adjacent to an ice rink that attracted 75,000 skaters in 2013 and thousands more this year. Residents of Detroit as well as individuals living in the suburbs and other Michigan cities make the trip to the famous rink in Campus Martius Park during the winter months. Every year, the area creates a true Winter Wonderland environment with Holiday music, hot chocolate, and even bonfires and s’mores for skaters with a sweet tooth. During the warmer months, Campus Martius Park transitions into Detroit’s version of New York City’s Rockefeller Center. The area includes fountains, a small bistro, as well as the occasional concert. The city of Detroit has always honed a love for musical performance. Under the nickname “Motown”, it brought life to live and recorded music starting with blues in the 1940’s, stretching all the way to hip-hop in the 90’s. Over the past few decades, a variety of music festivals have begun to call the city their home. Often credited with the birth of Techno music, Detroit holds its

ifting gears own electronic music festival called DEMF (Detroit Electronic Music Festival) every Memorial Day Weekend. Hosted in Hart Plaza, the festival attracts tens of thousands of people to the city during the three-day event. For those who would rather enjoy country music, Detroit also hosts the Hoedown. This event attracts some of the biggest names in country music and allows people to enjoy great music, good food, as well as the company of thousands of others just outside of Tigers stadium. Much of Detroit’s recent successes are attributed to the efforts of Quicken Loans and its CEO Dan Gilbert. Gilbert moved Quicken Loans’ headquarters back to Detroit in 2010, and since then has partaken in several initiatives to improve the city. He also invested in a large-scale project to renovate Detroit buildings, and restored more than 60 properties in downtown Detroit. In these properties he has helped new startups and other companies find their way to the city, many of these located along Woodward Avenue, which runs through the center of the city, including Campus Martius Park and Hart Plaza. As a result, the area has replenished and been the home to much of Detroit’s fledgling activity and entertainment. Other key players include the Ilitch family, who founded Little Caesar’s Pizza and own the Detroit Red Wings. Through continuous investment in the city of Detroit they have become a large contributor to the creation of its future entertainment district, dubbed The District Detroit. The 50-block construction project is aiming to create a hub for

people, businesses, and entertainment in Detroit’s very center. The District will be organized into five different “neighborhoods”, each aimed at entertaining a specific area of interest. These neighborhoods will include a park, sports arenas, as well as new bars and restaurants. The project is expected to be completed over the next few years, and will be a critical part of Detroit’s recovery. The current changes and events have created a welcome environment for people to travel back into the city and enjoy the beauty Detroit has to offer. Although the city has not yet seen a significant increase in population, there are projects and efforts underway to move in that direction. These events create a great image for the city and allow for people to experience Detroit in a positive, safe, and exciting manner. In this way, the city of Detroit is aiming to create a center for entertainment as well as settlement. While there are many steps yet to be taken along the road of rebuilding the city of Detroit, progress is quickly being made. With all of the businesses and attractions popping up within its borders, it undeniable that Detroit is a city to watch over the next few years. Without a doubt gears are shifting in the motor city once again, and the future appears to be bright. BY LOTTE HURKMANS

/ATTRACT Opposites attract, we know this to be true - but what about when they intertwine? The moment when day and night merge forms the beauty of dawn, or when an extrovert and an introvert meet, conjuring a dialogue of imperfect harmony. THE

INTROVERT/ She’s an introvert. She’s quiet, calm and contemplative. Her eyebrows appear permanently furrowed, as if the secrets of his mind hide behind them. Any fear you may have about approaching him take second to the idea of unlocking his thoughts. She’s an enigma to you, and you’re only thought when approaching him is how you will solve this puzzle. She’s an introvert. She listens to your thoughts, remembering each tiny detail you bring forth. She takes time to think about what you’re saying, she responds with hesitancy… crafting her ideas with care. She knows how much weight words can hold, so she thinks quietly before speaking. What fun would conversation be if your thoughts were incomplete to begin with? She’s an introvert. She loves you and spends hours dissecting your words. Observation, scrutiny and isolation mark her life. It’s not sad, nor is it lonely. For her, it is peaceful, it is silent. She’s an introvert. You spend hours trying to understand him, but one conversation can unwind all your carefully knit perceptions. She is quiet, thoughtful and welcomes the idea of being alone, and of being perfectly in sync with herself. Maybe you didn’t try hard enough to understand her, didn’t take time to think about yourself as much as she did. But then again, she’s an introvert. And you were just a guest in her thoughts. 17

18

19

THE

EXTROVERT/ She’s an extrovert. Her body language is friendly, any air of secrecy or mystery swept away by her open arms. Any hesitation about approaching her never has a chance to reach your mind, because she reached your heart first. She walks up to you, says hello, introduces herself and it’s as if you two have known each other for more than just a few moments. She’s an extrovert. She guides your conversation, welcomes your thoughts and opens you up to her own. Not once does she slow down to think before she speaks. She doesn’t feel the need to… what fun would contemplation be if it was never vocalized? What fun would new relationships be if you never took the first leap? She’s an extrovert. She begins to love you freely and openly. No concerns, no reservations and no steady pace. For her, it’s always been all or nothing. Either you take the chance or you lose the opportunity. She’s an extrovert. She comes into your life in a split second, and leaves in another. She is restless, constantly yearning for change. She desires stimulation. She despises stagnation. Maybe you weren’t quick to open yourself up to her, as she did to you. Maybe you didn’t lend yourself the chance to love as freely as she did. But then again, she’s an extrovert. And you were just caught in her whims.
