Business Connections 2016 State Legislative Preview Luncheon with Shelby County Delegation County’s state legislative delegation prior to the State Legislature’s convening in Montgomery. The Luncheon, sponsored by AARP and Sain Associates, will be from 11:30AM 1:00PM on Wednesday, January 20 and feature a brief presentation from the delegation followed by a “question & answer” period for attendees.

There will be no shortage of predictions and projections on the national and state level with regard to a variety of business issues — but what do Shelby County business people think our own local 2016 business climate will look like? The Greater Shelby Chamber wants to give business owners and top managers the chance to voice their opinion — and help us let the local community know
what Shelby County’s 2016 business outlook will be! We hope you’ll take a few moments to complete our 2016 Business Climate Survey — developed by the Chamber’s Small Business Work Group — and provide important feedback on business issues affecting your company in 2016. All individual responses will be kept confidential, but the overall results will be released and shared
in composite during the Chamber’s 2016 Business Outlook Conference cohosted by the University of Montevallo. In addition, the information will also be shared with economic developers, elected officials and the media so we’ll all have a better idea of what business people like you think 2016 will hold for Shelby County. What Is Glaucoma
There is thought to be about 3 million people in this country with glaucoma, but only about half of them know they have it. Glaucoma is a group of diseases that damage the optic nerve and can result in loss of vision or even blindness if left untreated, usually associated with increased pressure in the eyes. There are two more common forms of glaucoma, primary open angle glaucoma (POAG) and angle closure glaucoma. There are several other forms, usually due to trauma or specific anatomical variations in our eyes. The most common form of glaucoma is POAG. In this form, excess fluid cannot flow out of the eye properly, causing the eye pressure to increase slowly. Over time, elevated eye pressure causes 2016 Health Focus Sponsor
damage to the nerve fibers in the optic nerve, resulting in vision loss. Symptoms associated with POAG are nonexistent at the onset of the disease. If left untreated, patients will start to lose specific areas of vision (mostly peripherally) initially, followed by straight ahead vision until the eye is blind. Angle closure glaucoma is a less common form of the disease. It occurs when the drainage system becomes blocked, resulting in a rapid buildup of fluid and significantly increased eye pressure. This type of

Mentorship Program Moves to 1st Tuesday of Each Month The Chamber’s Entrepreneur Mentorship program, which continues to provide much needed assistance to entrepreneurs and small business owners, will be held during the first Tuesday of each month in 2016. Participants have received guidance on starting a new business, expanding an existing business, launching a new product, downsizing and
dealing with a difficult employee. The first 2016 Mentorship session will be held Tuesday, January 5 from 8:00AM-11:00AM. During that time, Michael Smith with the The Great, The Good and The Gone will be available for a one-on-one confidential meeting with any small business owner or entrepreneur to discuss any topic. “Keeping It Real” Program Continues for 9th Grade Shelby County Students! The Chamber’s Education Work Group is in its 3rd year of the “Keeping It Real” Program. This program teaches 9th grade students about “real world” life choices by giving them a random-assigned “life scenario” which includes marital/ family status, education, job and salary. The students then pay bills, make decisions on increasing education, adding a second job, etc. based on the random-assigned
scenario. Each year this program has been an eyeopening experience for the 9th graders and the volunteers that assist with the program. The Chamber is seeking volunteers on January 14 for Shelby County High
School and January 23 for Thompson High School. Volunteers would manage a station and assist the students as they make decisions “paying bills” and make “life choices” based their situation.
