3rd Annual ‘Shelby County Business Outlook Conference’ Newsletter

The Chamber’s Education Work Group kicked off its 5th year of the “Keeping It Real” Program. This program teaches 9th grade students about “real world” life choices by giving them a randomassigned “life scenario” which includes marital/ family status, education, job and salary. The students then pay bills, make decisions on increasing education, adding a second job, etc. based on the “random-selected” scenario. Each year this program has been an eye-opening experience for the 9th grader students and the volunteers that assist with the program. The Chamber is seeking volunteers for Shelby County

Ambassador of the Month

Congratulations to Keith Sides for earning Ambassador of the Month. Keith is the Owner of the UPS Store Caldwell Mill, located in the Publix Shopping Center at the intersection of Caldwell Mill and Valleydale roads. He was priviledged to purchase the store December 1, 2016 and has spent the past year meeting clients, learning the UPS franchise model, and continuing the tradition of digital printing for small businesses begun by his predecessors. Keith purchased the store after completing a 27-year career in 2014 with Regions Financial Corporation. Keith believes that from his banking career he brings expertise in relationship development and ﬁnancing opportunities to his UPS business. Sides was employed for six years by an agency of the United States Government in Washington, D.C. There he was responsible for international policy and affairs analysis during the Presidents Carter and Reagan administrations. Mr. Sides’ work focused primarily on international political and military developments in the Middle East and Latin America. Mr. Sides is a native of Birmingham. He holds undergraduate and a graduate business degree from the University of Alabama. 2018 State Legislative Preview Luncheon with Shelby County Delegation The Chamber’s Governmental Affairs Work Group will host a Legislative Preview Luncheon featuring the Shelby County state legislative delegation as they prepare for the upcoming 2018 legislative session scheduled to begin in February. This

meeting will provide area businesspeople with the opportunity to meet with the County’s state legislative delegation prior to the State Legislature’s convening in Montgomery. The Luncheon will be from 11:30AM - 1:00PM on Friday,

January 12 and feature a brief presentation from the delegation followed by a “question & answer” period for attendees. The program will be held at Jefferson State Community College’s Shelby Campus (4600 Valleydale Road,

The Chamber held its 3rd annual Student Career Awareness Fair at the Shelby County Exhibition Center in November. The 10th grade students from all over Shelby County visited three “career clusters” and heard from more than 50+ volunteers as they informed the students what they could expect in the “real world” of what it’s like to work in a particular career ﬁeld such as: how to dress, educational requirements, training, salary ranges, day-to-day expectations and duties, how early one would need to arrive on any given day, if the career ﬁeld ever required working nights or weekends, networking, soft skills, etc. Thank you to our Co-sponsors of this vitally important program A.C.
