Heal Yourself With Massage

Back Pain, Headaches, Osteoarthritis, Sleep Deprivation, Depression and Anxiety. How do these ailments relate? There may not be a magic pill that will ease all of these discomforts, but a good massage could be the cure! When thinking about a professional massage, one usually relates it to a special gift you receive once a year to get pampered for

all your hard work. But what if we changed our perception of massage as pampering and more accurately viewed it as preventative and curative medicine? What if instead of masking our aches and pains with medication, we rubbed them away with massage? Massage is a special treat, a chance to get away, unwind, and relax. While you are enjoying those aspects, a

massage reduces the levels of the cortisol, a stress hormone, and boosts the neurotransmitters serotonin and dopamine resulting in lower blood pressure, a brighter outlook, and less depression. Wellness programs for college students are acknowledging the highstress among students during final exams and offering events to help them de-stress. In 2012, Samford University offered free massages during exam week and the response was overwhelming. At St. Vincent’s we regularly offer massages for employees through free events and discounts. This approach was based on the evidence that massage decreases anxiety, depression, and increases alertness. These findings can easily be implemented elsewhere. Massage also improves sleep. You may find yourself dozing off while experiencing a massage. This is because a massage affects the brain waves causing deep sleep. Studies have shown massage helps maintain overall health by increasing the production of white blood cells needed to fight disease. This boost in immune system function makes massage a wonderful compliment to Western medical approaches to cancer treatments. It may help reduce pain, swelling, fatigue, and nausea in addition to boosting immunity. Massage is for both the young and the old and the benefits are consistent regardless of age. Touch is the first sense humans develop. In Eastern and African cultures, infant massage has long been a common practice

in families. Some form of bodywork is used by many indigenous tribes to soothe, relax and heal their little ones, sometimes including scented oils and herbal remedies as part of the experience. Both infants and the elderly have exhibited failure to thrive without adequate physical contact. Massage can be incorporated simply. You can begin by massaging your children before bed at night. As adults, we can incorporate massage with everyday items found around the home such as tennis balls for counter-pressure, a rolling pin for rolling pressure, massage chairs, whirlpool jets with a relaxing bath, or exchanging massages with a spouse, family member or friend. If you are unsure of the techniques of massage, meet with a professional massage therapist, research and learn. Regular massage can ensure that touch is a positive, nurturing, and healing part of the human experience. Heal yourself with a massage! Laura Reeder, C.H.E.S., A.A.H.C.C.
