Camping World, located in Calera, has everything you need for camping from RV’s, including a service center, outdoor accessories, and is open Monday through Saturday 8-6 p.m. and 11 a.m.-5 p.m. on Sundays. “CityFest is a community-driven event free to the public that expressly has something for all ages, groups geared toward family fun,” Mullins said. Mullins’ company participates in Good Sam, a camping club, where the employees actually are paid for taking a day off for service work. “Another reason I help is because the Alabaster Arts Council has genuine good hearts,” Mullins said. “I really appreciate them and all the volunteers and sponsors Camping World is celebrating its 50th anniversary and will have amazing who help.” Mullins said. “I really deals for those folks who come in during appreciate them and all the volunteers 2016. Sponsor Spotlight Southeastern Pond Management By DEB WOODBERY

S

ponsors are essential to the success of CityFest, making it available and free to the public. This year, Southeastern Pond Management, 2469 Highway 31, will jump in to help. “Southeastern Pond Management has called Alabaster home since 1993. My family and I have attended Alabaster CityFest for many years and have always found it to be a great value…a truly fantastic, family-friendly event,” Owner Norman Latona said. “We are pleased and excited at the opportunity to be involved with CityFest in 2016 as a corporate sponsor!” Southeastern Pond Management has four locations and has been in business since 1989. This company has a broader

range of services than most pond and lake management companies. Southeastern Pond Management leads in services and technology by helping owners with pond construction, stocking, lake mapping, weed control, liming, fountains and aerators. Another specialty service is electrofishing, which helps to assess the health of the body of water as well as the health of the fish. If you are not sure what your needs are for your pond or lake, you can always contact Southeastern Pond Management for a free initial consultation. Southeastern Pond Management has a

team of experienced biologists available, and stocks important products for your pond such as fish tagging kits, SportMax fertilizers and custom designed Pond-Toon fishing boats with accessories on hand. It is a one-stop shop for all your pond maintenance needs. Call 664-5596 or 288-1371 or email info@sepond.com for more information. Also visit sepond.com.

CityFest 5k

run returns for fourth year By DEB WOODBERY

T

his year the Alabaster CityFest will host the fourth annual 5K fun run. Jamia Alexander-Williams, an Arts Council member, has the baton this year to head the 5K run. “I was the woman behind the woman at the first initial 5K run, and now this year, I am proud and honored to be manning this event for the Arts Council,” AlexanderWilliams said. “It is all about giving back to the community,” she added. “The Alabaster Arts Council does a great job encouraging the arts and music programs by donating money to the schools’ programs.” Just recently the Arts Council donated funds to an art teacher at Thompson High 10 | CityFest 201 6

School to do a summer camp for her kids. The money from CityFest vendors and the registration fees from the 5K race help to fund many programs. This year’s prizes for the race are donated by Dick’s Sporting Goods, headed up by Matthew Edgeworth who is the Community Marketing Manager for the Alabama/Florida Panhandle. The winners of the CityFest 5K will receive Dick’s Sporting Goods gift certificates and medals. There will be door prizes given as well. The race will kick-off at 8 a.m. at the Larry Simmons Stadium behind Thompson Intermediate School and will be on a certified course ending at the Buck Creek Trail area.

To register online go to active.com or to print a paper registration copy go to alabastercityfest.com/5k-fun-run. Early packet pick up will be Friday, June 3 from 6:30-8:30 p.m. at the Thompson Intermediate School gym. Late registration is June 4 at 7 a.m. For more information on the 5K visit alabastercityfest.com/5k-fun-run.

KidsFest

Kid-friendly fun returns to CityFest By DEB WOODBERY

C

ityFest is a family friendly event that has a whole area that caters just to kids. KidsFest is designed for kids to play in a safe environment. The KidsFest area is open from 9 a.m. until dusk when the opening act begins on the main stage, and is free to the public. The area will include more than 15 inflatables, face painting, kid rides and arts and crafts. Healthy eating demonstrations and science and magic 12 | CityFest 201 6

shows will also be offered with a few surprises all day. Lowe’s will also return with its woodcrafting workshop that allows kids to create projects such as birdhouses or tool kits. Vic Smith sponsors the KidsFest area, and without his support the area would not be free to visitors. There is absolutely some activity for every child that attends. Kids will get to enjoy the music at

the festival as they play in KidsFest with shows happening all through the day. “There will be thousands of kids coming through the KidsFest area throughout the day,” said Sophie Martin, Alabaster City Councilwoman and Arts Council member. Parents will love that their kids will go home tired. Visit alabastercityfest.com to get more information.

lue Cross Blue Shield of Alabama on the first reference. Please include the BCBS logo on this page. will again host the KidsFest Health and Wellness activities this year. Child obesity is such a problem in our nation that our First Lady, Michelle Obama, started the “Let’s Move” project seven years ago. Blue Cross Blue Shield is also taking it to the public to promote good healthy eating habits for kids. Sophie Martin is in charge of this area again this year for KidsFest. This year’s activities at the KidsFest

Health and Wellness area will begin at 10 a.m. It will include field day activities with the three legged race, sack race, hula hoop competition, and, bringing back the most popular activity, the tug of war. It is anticipated that several thousand kids will enjoy this area June 4. One of the more important but fun activities for kids is the healthy eating workshop that starts at 11 a.m. The kids are not allowed to actually cook, but they are shown how to prepare healthy snacks and given information about being and eating healthy. Last year, more than 300

kids attended. Throughout the day kid-friendly concerts are held for participants and their families. These activities are free and are planned so that all the family members can stay and play together. For more information, visit alabastercityfest.com.
