CityFest celebrates

13 years of success

hen former Alabaster City Councilman Adam Moseley planned the first CityFest in 2003, he never anticipated what the event would become 13 years later. “When I was on the City Council, we decided to celebrate the 50th anniversary of Alabaster,” Moseley said. “The first CityFest was much, much smaller, but at the time, it was the biggest thing that had ever happened in Alabaster... Over the years it turned into something a whole lot bigger.” The first CityFest saw about 5,000 attendants, and was a “much bigger success than we thought it would be,” Moseley said. Since then, the annual event has grown, drawing up to tens of thousands attendees from across the state and the southeast. Numerous big-name musicians have graced the stage at CityFest over the years. “People have come to expect us to have 4 | CityFest 201 5

first-class entertainment,” Moseley said. “We have Scotty McCreery this year. We’ve had Travis Tritt, Diamond Rio, Craig Morgan, Josh Turner, we’ve had some really big names that we’ve been able to attract to this festival.” Although CityFest has grown from a small city celebration to a full-fledged festival, the event has stayed true to its community, family oriented roots. With delicious food, games and a free kid zone complete with rides and entertainment, CityFest offers something for the whole family to enjoy. “The biggest thing about this is it’s a family festival, we’ve always billed it as a family festival,” Moseley said. “Every year when we start talking about the music line up, anything we want to do differently, we always keep in mind that this is a family festival.” Planning for CityFest is a year-round affair for Moseley and members of the Alabaster Arts Council. Planning for the next year begins again as soon as CityFest ends. “That first year, there were three or four of

us who were really doing all the planning and all the volunteer work,” Moseley said. “It has grown to be such a big event that you can’t do that anymore.” Now, a core group of about 20 members of the Arts Council work to plan the event, coordinate vendors and musician lineup, and organize the kids’ zone, car show and much more. Hundreds of volunteers are also needed on the day of CityFest to make the event a success. “That’s the only reason this works,” Moseley said of the volunteers. “Everybody volunteers their time and their energy to make this happen every year.” After months dedicated to work and planning, Moseley said his favorite part of the process is the day of CityFest. “All the planning that you’ve put into it, you get to see the fruits of that labor,” Moseley said. “You get to see the enjoyment on the faces of the people out there with their families.” •

McCreery rocking the stage By NEAL WAGNER

ountry music star and 2011 “American Idol” winner Scotty McCreery will headline the 2015 Alabaster CityFest on June 6. McCreery will take the stage at the festival, which is held each year in Alabaster Municipal Park, at 9 p.m. The Arts Council works to organize CityFest celebration each year. McCreery has seen much success in the country music field since winning season 10 of American Idol in May 2011. He has sold 2.5 million albums, received 6 | CityFest 201 5

platinum and gold certifications, debuted three consecutive albums at the top of the Billboard charts, released three platinumcertified singles and two top-10 hits. His debut album, “Clear as Day,” caused McCreery to become the youngest man to have his first album debut at the top of the all-genre Billboard Top 200 in 2011. He is well-known for songs such as “The Trouble with Girls,” “See you Tonight” and “I Love you this Big.” CityFest is the largest entertainment festival in Shelby County, and regularly draws tens of thousands of attendees. The festival will feature music acts,

vendors, a Kids Zone, a car show and more. Local artists will perform on the Day Stage beginning at 10 a.m., including Megan Kane, Cam Spinks, Sanchez Tannehill, and rock band Kate and the Howlers. Terry Padgett will present his Elvis tribute to wrap up the Day Stage. Keith Beard's acoustic solo guitar kicks off the Main Stage at 2:00. Originally from Alabaster, Jason Aaron Coons has toured with Switchfoot and One Direction and will come home to play at 5 p.m., while Nashville's beach-rock combo Koa lead in to the headliners. •

Alabaster CityFest set to host third annual 5K Fun Run By BAKER ELLIS

hen Gina McDonald won the At-Home prize in the 2013 season of NBC’s Biggest Loser, she was given more than just money. “I won $100,000, and I got my life back,” McDonald said. At the time, McDonald was relatively unfamiliar with the city of Alabaster, and 10 | CityFest 201 5

her only real connection with the city was through her accountant, who is from Alabaster, and was the first person to call her after her At-Home win, because he was concerned about the tax burden the money would cause, McDonald said with a laugh. He is on the board for CityFest, and the idea for the 5K was born. “When I got back from The Biggest Loser, they asked me to organize it (5K),” McDonald said. “The first year was great,

we had a great turnout the first year. Last year our numbers were a little down, and if we don’t get a certain number this year, we won’t be able to continue to have the 5K in the future.” This year’s run is taking place in a new location, and will be more of a trail run than in years past. It will wind through Buck Creek Trail for the majority of the race, McDonald said, and is a great way to kick off the day’s festivities.

The race will begin at 8 a.m. on June 6, the day of CityFest, while the gates for CityFest itself will open at 9 a.m. The race costs $30 for adults aged 18-70, $20 for high school and middle school students aged 12-17 and $15 for children 11 and under. There will be an early packet pickup available on June 5 from 6:30-8:30 a.m. at Thompson Intermediate School gym.

All packages include a T-shirt and are guaranteed for people who pre-register. You can register for the race at Active.com. “We want to get the families out there,” McDonald said. “It’s a great way to kick off the day.” The gates for CityFest will open at 9 a.m. and Scotty McCreery, the headline act, is set to take the stage at 9 p.m. •

ityFest is truly a family-friendly event, with an entire area and lineup designated for kid-friendly fun at KidsFest. The KidsFest area is open from 9 a.m. until dusk when the opening act begins to play, and is free to the public. The area will include more than 15 inflatables and kid rides, arts and crafts, healthy eating demonstrations, science and

magic shows and other children’s activities. Lowe’s will also return with their buildit workshop, which allows kids to create a project such as a tool kit or a bird house. “One great thing about KidsFest is that there are not only activities for kids, but also for families, and they can spend quality time together,” CityFest volunteer Sophie Martin said. “They can both participate together, and the area is very safe and it’s a secure, blocked off area where parents can know their children will be taken care of."

Vick Smith sponsors the KidsFest area and Martin noted that without his support, the area wouldn’t be free. “There’s really something for every kid there,” Martin said. Kids will also be able to enjoy the music at the festival, with shows happening throughout the day. Martin estimates that thousands of kids will come through the KidsFest area throughout the day. “It’s controlled, fun chaos,” she said. “They all go home tired.” •

lue Cross and Blue Shield of Alabama will host a healthy cooking class and field day activities at KidsFest to teach kids about healthy habits and fitness and to fight childhood obesity. Childhood obesity plagues 13.5 percent of adolescents in Alabama, according to the Center for Disease Control and Prevention. “One of Blue Cross and Blue Shield of Alabama’s goals is to help in the fight against childhood obesity and teaching healthy lifestyle habits, and the cooking class and field day is one way we can do that,” CityFest volunteer Sophie Martin said. "The healthy cooking class and field day activities will help with healthy choices that will hopefully last a lifetime.” During the event, kids can participate in a variety of athletic activities during field day as well as create and eat a snack during the healthy cooking class. Field day involves a three-legged race, a sack race, tug-of-war, egg relays and more. “We are bringing back popular activities that are popular with the kids every year,” Martin said. During the healthy cooking class, kids learn how to prepare a simple snack they can practice at home, and all children are invited to taste their creation. The healthy living expo is free and open to the public, and continues to grow each year, with over 300 children attending the event in previous years. The field day activities are scheduled to begin around 10 a.m. and the cooking class will be at 11 a.m. when the weather tends to be cooler. •
