We’re doing our small part to give the Cahaba Lily its day in the sun.

Meet Hyumenocallis coronaira, commonly known as the Cahaba lily. Indigenous to the Cahaba River-one of the most biologically diverse waterways in the nation - its fragrant flowers first open at night, inviting pollination by the nocturnal sphinx moth. Each flower blooms and lasts for a single day before wilting. Nearby, our North Shelby Wastewater Treatment Plant does its own small part in making the Cahaba so rich in diversity.

The water we return to the Cahaba is actually purer than the river water itself. And our recent $9 million upgrade to reduce the amount of phosphorous in the Cahaba helps cut down on deadly algal blooms that threaten many species. At SouthWest Water Company, we also sponsor and volunteer with Adopt-A-Stream, cleaning up debris of all kinds that threatens the river’s most fragile ecosystems. Because we want the Cahaba lily, and the river, to have many more sunny days ahead.

I

I was dozing off early one Friday night after a long week last fall when the text came. “Can I call you tonight?” it read with no explanation. That typically means one of three things: something bad has happened, someone is pregnant, or, the most likely suspect here, someone was engaged. I wasted no time to press the phone icon next to my friend’s number and get the full account of the best kind of diamond ring-laden surprise that had come earlier than she’d expected. She was giddy, and I couldn’t remember the last time excitement filled me from head to toe like it did in the moments and days that followed. It feels like people around me get engaged all the time, but this one felt different. Because after a long season of wondering who in the world would be a good fit for this friend in all the goodness she has to offer in a relationship, getting the front row seat as man so right for her (and she for him) entered the scene and began melding his life with hers was a glorious wonder to behold—and one that makes me smile time and time again. A few weeks later my favorite season of my work year began, where we ask brides to send us pictures of their big day and write out accounts of dresses and proposals, moments they will never forget and personable décor details. In this issue we only get to share a couple hundred words of their stories, but I know that they represent a much longer story of both magical moments and a road of resolving complications and uncertainties that their friends know the full depths of, just as I know my friends’. Along with these real wedding stories we’ve rounded up all things pretty—picking out hostess gifts from local gift stores and asking photographers about trends they’ve been seeing, researching what flowers are in season when and how a new customizable wedding dress line works. But before you get to those pages, be sure to check out Emma Simmons’ story on Reagan Thompson‘s delectable cookie creations, a preview of the new On Tap Sports Café opening in Liberty Park, and the hub for art Meagan Robichaux has created in Cahaba Heights. They’re just as inspiring as all of the weddings we curated. Cheers to 2019, to love stories, and to loving our community and all its people!

ARTS

INSIDE THE PINK HOUSE Meagan Robichaux’s The Art House is bringing a creative flare to Cahaba Heights. BY ELIZABETH STURGEON PHOTOS BY MARY FEHR AND CONTRIBUTED VestaviaHillsMagazine.com 17

Megan Robichaux opened The Art House last summer in Cahaba Heights.

S

Splattered color on a white surface might sound like the leftovers of an art project awaiting clean up. But, sometimes, that splatter is the art, steeped in the history of artistic expression and the movement of paint. In Meagan Robichaux’s studio, that happens to be an after-school lesson that delighted her art students. “They thought they were making a mess, but I taught them about Jackson Pollock,” she says. Since July, Meagan has been creating these lessons out of The Art House. It truly looks like and feels like a house, located on the first floor of the “pink house” in Cahaba Heights off of Pipe Line Road. Nestled back behind Heights Village, everyone seems to know this pastelcolored little building and what Meagan’s working on there. From after-school art to girls nights, she is filling the neighborhood with a unique artistic spirit. Her first-floor space, a few rooms right now, wears the looks of a studio. There are projects here and there, and florals sit on the floor from

18 February/March 2019

a workshop the night before. Along with Meagan’s own abstract hanging on the wall, kids’ artwork lies on the windowsill, waiting to go home with its creators. She always wants students to go home after a class with at least one complete piece. Meagan is quick to say she loves instructing art, that she maybe even likes it better than making her own art by herself. Through teaching, especially with kids, she gets to explore the fearlessness of a true artist. “Kids are some of the best artists because they’re not afraid to just jump in there. They embrace mistakes,” she says. “As we grow older, we are more hesitant and afraid to make them.” It might be new to Cahaba Heights, but the studio is nothing new to Meagan. “I’ve always wanted a place called The Art House,” she says. Through her childhood, she grew up around art classes out of her mother Diddy Vucovich’s studio, The Art Factory in Montgomery. Meagan taught some of the classes herself as

SHE ALWAYS SAYS WHAT EVERYBODY IS THINKING, LIKE THE TIME SHE ASKED THE GATE ATTENDANT, “WHEN WILL I EVER GET ON THIS AIRPLANE?” she got older and saw the beauty and importance of making art in a child’s life. “It was always in the back of my mind to do what my mom did.” After The Art Factory closed when Meagan was in middle school, she continued to make creating and studying artistic technique part of her life through her coursework and college degrees in art history and art management. And her dream for The Art House came a little sooner than she thought with the right need and the right space opening up. She’d been holding art camps in her house during the summers, but her dream to have her own space has finally become a reality. When a few of her friends told her about the space in the pink house, she quickly made a business plan and started booking art camps and birthday parties. “The space is so charming,” she says. “I think that if I moved, people would get upset. People know the pink house.” Both she and Freedom Soap Company (on the second floor) have filled this empty space, each bringing new creativity to Cahaba Heights, where Meagan also lives with her family. Still not even a year old, The Art House melds classes for kids with Meagan’s love for art history. Meagan’s after-school students are making art to bring home, but she’s wrapping these projects with historical art movements, like impressionism, to deepen her lessons. “You can learn so much through art history,” she says, looking around her studio at the French-inspired colors and brushstrokes in front of the white walls.

WHAT’S AT THE ART HOUSE? After School Art: Meagan offers after school classes (usually for ages 7-12 as of right now) Monday through Thursday. Each lesson focuses on a different style and medium for students to explore. Petite Picasso: For ages 3-5, these classes are held Tuesday through Thursday for little ones. Monet, Mommy & Me: For kids 12 months and up, Meagan’s mommy & me classes have been popular when she opened for families to create a piece of art together. Birthday Parties: Meagan is available to host birthday parties on Saturdays, and she customizes activities for the birthday girl or boy. Girls Nights: These can be scheduled by The Art House or organized for your own group of girls. Meagan hopes to have more adult classes with different leading local artists.

Some kids walk after school from Vestavia Hills Elementary Cahaba Heights to The Art House for lessons, making art classes a new part of the neighborhood routine. “It’s such an interesting community,” Meagan says. “I have a lot of mentors, people who’ve owned businesses in Cahaba Heights who I can ask questions. They’ve been so helpful and supportive.” Although it’s in the backyard of Cahaba Heights residents and the school, The Art House has been drawing students from all over. “I feel like the first couple of birthday parties I had in August really helped bring people in and see what it’s all about,” Meagan says. “In the back of my head I always feared that there wasn’t a need for it. The schools are great here, they have great art programs, so why would anyone need their kids to take art?” But she realized that there was something about the relaxed atmosphere of art-making that kids, and everyone for that matter, craves. Still growing her (essentially) one-woman business, 24 February/March 2019

Meagan has been brainstorming what could be next. Looking into the large, open room connected to her main class space, she dreams of having a gallery space to hang the work of local artists—and also to showcase her students’ work and their pride in the pieces they admire. Meagan recalls the first birthday party she hosted when the six-year-old birthday girl wanted to learn how to draw horses. So Meagan taught the girls to draw and paint exactly what she wanted. “They were so proud of what they had made. I knew I was doing something right,” she says. “They just jump right in and make the art their own.” The Art House is located at 3131 Bellwood Drive behind the Starbucks in Cahaba Heights. ICING BY DESIGN

Reagan Thompson’s cookie creations are as much of an art as they are a confection. STORY & PHOTOS BY EMMA SIMMONS VestaviaHillsMagazine.com 25

26 February/March 2019

F

Reagan Thompson is the artist behind @reabakes cookies.

For those of us who can hardly draw a straight line, it’s hard to believe Reagan Thompson’s exquisite confections are the mere result of “so much practice,” as she insists. The humble baker may poke fun at being the resident “cookie lady,” but her mini masterpieces have already garnered the attention of thousands beyond the ‘Hills. What began five years ago as a “total fail” for her son Carter’s second birthday party evolved into an artistic endeavor that has captured the taste buds of locals and the double taps of 7,000 Instagram followers, and counting. “The cookies were so bad, they were hard as

rocks at first,” the Vestavia Hills native admits. Reagan couldn’t tell you what fueled the cookiemaking moxie that followed her first attempt. She documented her baking journey on her @reabakes Instagram account, initially intended for friends and family who wouldn’t mind being inundated with cookie content. When one of her mother’s coworkers requested to place an order, Reagan was thunderstruck. “I was like, ‘An order…really?!’ I wasn’t trying to make a business out of it, but from then on, it grew into this,” recalls Reagan, who was an undecided major at UAB at the time. VestaviaHillsMagazine.com 27

With some encouragement from her nowhusband and high school sweetheart, Colin, she abandoned plans for a “normal job” and pursued a degree around her passion. “When I started out, I didn’t have the marketing background, so I didn’t know what I was doing. It was fun to go through classes while growing my business. It helped a lot!” she says. Fast forward a few years, and Reagan is fielding business inquiries like it’s a part-time job. Through her savvy social media marketing, she’s maximized exposure to her target audience of young moms and brides-to-be. Her posts practically advertise themselves. Fortunately for her sanity, Reagan is restricted to local orders only, as her home bakery operates under Alabama’s Cottage Law. “The Cottage Law gives me an excuse not to ship. You have to sell your goods straight out of your house, and they can’t be perishable,” Reagan explains. The self-professed yes-woman limits herself to an ambitious five orders per week, often booking out months in advance. “Right now, I’m probably doing more than I should. I’ve had to turn down a lot of people, just because I’m pregnant,” she says, regretful of disappointing would-be customers. Reagan allocates the first three days of every week for handcrafting her original designs, which have inspired admiring hobbyists on Instagram. Reagan, however, finds her inspiration from within. “It’s almost like there’s this secret cookie Instagram group. They will find you, and they will follow you. But I’ve been really careful. I don’t follow many of them back, because I don’t want to run the risk of wanting to copy a design. I always want to be original,” she reveals. Reagan enjoys the creative freedom she’s allowed through unique, custom orders. Screenshots of these sets will often resurface in subsequent order requests, but she doesn’t mind, as long as she meets expectations. From her kitchen Reagan letters her elegantly water-colored cookies with perfect execution, almost every time. Each sister cookie in a batch is nearly identical, but she keeps a couple of spares in case she’s not satisfied. What falls outside of her margin for error is likely imperceptible to her customers, but that doesn’t stop her from setting the bar high. Her painstaking process takes all seven hours her first-grader is in school, and she makes it a point to put the paintbrush down when he’s home. With a baby girl on the way, her cookie 28 February/March 2019

business comes second to her top priority: her family. “I try to put it all out of sight by the time everyone’s home, so then we have the rest of the day to hang out together,” she says. Ironically, eating cookies isn’t an activity the Thompson family often indulges in. “Before Colin and I got married, I’d pack up bags of all my leftover cookies for him to take back to Auburn because he loved them. But they’re just not as tempting when you can have one whenever you want,” she says, laughing. The same goes for Reagan’s son, whose tastes have become more refined over the years. “Carter will eat one if it’s shaped like a car or something boy-ish—but other than that, he doesn’t really look at them,” she confesses. In the rare moment when Reagan finds time to make an extra batch, she saves the gesture for those she knows will appreciate it most, including Carter’s classmates, her church congregation and her postal worker. “Last year was our first Christmas in this house, and I left some cookies for our

mailwoman. She wrote the nicest note a week later saying, ‘You brightened my Christmas.’ When they’re not expecting it, it’s the best,” she recounts, glowing. As much as Reagan enjoys surprising others, she’s not planning on throwing her customers through any loops just yet. For now, she’s content, and grateful, to be right where she is. “I’m just thankful that this fell in my lap because I can’t imagine doing anything else,” she says, softly smiling.

FIVE QUESTIONS FOR

Todd Beegle

Assistant Managing Partner On Tap Sports Café RENDERING CONTRIBUTED

People come to On Tap Sports Café for beer. They come to watch sports. They come to eat a burger or wings. And soon they can do so in Liberty Park when the sports bar’s newest location opens in The Bray development in late spring or early summer of this year. If you’ve been to one of their locations at the Galleria, Inverness or Fultondale (or the one that’s no longer open in Lakeview), you know the concept, but you might not know they are all locally and run by the Beegle family: parents Elaine and Craig and their son, Todd, who gave us the scoop on what to anticipate at their new two-story location right near the new Publix. Why did you choose Liberty Park? It’s a growing area, and this location will have restaurants and housing around it. We want to be a neighborhood bar where people will go if they don’t want to go downtown. What will we find on tap? We have 100 beers on tap at the Galleria and 72 at our other locations, and we’ll probably have 100 at Liberty Park. We have 10-20 bottles of beer, and we’ll have more wine at the Liberty Park location. We have a full liquor bar and close to 40 bourbons. You can’t get this many kinds of alcohol except at a package store. There’s always something for people to try. You can try a sample to see if you like it too.

go with our beer? Our wings are popular. We bread our own wings and do good boneless wings. Everyone loves our burgers. Our Crack Burger is awesome, it’s got bacon, special seasonings, Swiss cheese and a secret sauce. We have sandwiches and salads too. We have comfort fare—that’s what people want. We also have a ravioli bite with four cheeses fried together; it’s like a mozzarella stick.

What will the new location be like? It will be two stories with a bar upstairs and downstairs, and an outdoor patio upstairs and downstairs. We’ll have an event room and several other rooms you can rent out for watch parties. We’ll have a really big courtyard that will probably be a What menu items should we order to beer garden. It’s a combination of the 34 February/March 2019

things we know we like from our other locations. What beers would you recommend trying? We have a ton of local stuff. Most of the breweries are downtown, but here you can get most of the good stuff without having to go down to Good People or Avondale or Trim Tab or Ghost Train. We have some rare ones too, like right now we are doing the Gordo, which is Good People’s rare beer that’s like a barley wine that ages. I have been saving it for four years, and we’ll start doing that every year. I have a four year, a three year, a two year and a one year. I like people to try something new and find something they like. This year sours are in, last year ciders were in, IPAs are always in.

54 February/March 2019

The Proposal: Being the horse- and rodeo-loving people that we are, we were going to a rodeo on April Fool’s Day. But first at my mom’s house, Camp stops the car and asks me if I want to see my horses before we leave. He had hidden the ring in one of his boots in the car, and I was just oblivious to the entire thing until he was kneeling down to propose! Before he asked me to marry him, he said, “Girl, I have to tell you something. I’ve been fooling you. We aren’t going to the rodeo because I have a pretty important question I need to ask you!”

Favorite Moments: During our first look we exchanged letters, and Camp surprised me with a sign with a Bible verse on it from Habakkuk 3:17-18 and in the letter he said that he wanted that to be the definition of our marriage. During the ceremony, Camp, his dad and our pastor came in to a song called “Compass” by The Hedgerow Folk. Some of our best friends wrote that song and sang it at our wedding. Our first dance was to “Midnight Train to Georgia.” This was so fun to dance to as newlyweds because we moved to Georgia after our

WEDDINGS

wedding, and the lyrics really tell our story so perfectly! Favorite Details: Camp is working on his PhD in crop and soil science and we both are huge Auburn fans (War Eagle!), so for the groom’s cake, Aubie was carrying a backpack sprayer spraying in corn and soybeans. Our venue was located on a beautiful family farm, and the backdrop of our ceremony was one of their cultivated fields. We served Southern classics like fried chicken (of course!), red beans and rice, turnip greens, cornbread and BLT canapes as an appetizer.

How We Met: John and I (Meredith) began hanging around the same group of people at our church years before we ever began dating. We always had a mutual respect for one another, but that grew into us falling in love three years later. The Proposal: We were supposed to be getting dinner with another couple, but as John kept winding up the hill closer and closer to my favorite spot in Birmingham, I started to get butterflies. He had a beautiful table full of flowers and photos of us waiting at an overlook

of the city. After he proposed, we drank champagne and celebrated for a little while. Little did I know, the night wasn’t over. He set up a huge celebration afterwards—even my friends from Atlanta and sister from Chicago were there. Favorite Moment: We had the privilege of serving our guests communion. It was incredibly special to look our guests in the eyes and remind them of the love and grace found in Jesus. Favorite Details: I loved the layout

What You Are Doing Now: Six weeks after our wedding, we packed our bags and moved to Chattanooga. John is doing his residency in general surgery at Erlanger, and I am a reading interventionist at an elementary school. We absolutely love our new city, but will, of course, always miss Birmingham!

Cake Art provides sweet treats for all occassions By Emily Reed

When it comes to cakes, Cynthia Bertolone knows how to craft Italian treats and cuisine for all occasions. “Our cakes are famous for their perfect flavors, and beautiful presentation, especially a masterpiece of wedding cake designs and custom groom cakes,” said Cynthia, owner of Cake Art in Pelham. “We proudly go beyond desserts to create lunchtime Michael & Cynthia meals, dinners-to-go, and catering menus that please crowds and Bertolone, Owners showcase our work as authentic Italian cooks.” The bakery/bistro is located off of Pelham Parkway and offers a variety of cakes, including those for brides and grooms such as 2-tier “lightly speckled icing or naked cakes,” to a 5-tier cream cheese icing with fresh fruits detailed in laced and ornate designs. “The groom cakes are a gift from the bride that reflects his [the groom] personality and interests like a hunting tree trunk, or a barrel in his favorite cake flavors such as our tri-chocolate cake that is made with chocolate cake, chocolate icing whipped with Nutella, mini chocolate chips and chocolate ganache.” Trends in wedding cakes often range, and Cynthia said anything is possible. Oftentimes, brides will take inspiration for a cake based off of their wedding decor, decorations, the venue, wedding gowns, and dressed to create a cake design, according to Bertolone. “Fresh flowers on wedding cakes are the most popular, but geometric designs, ruffles, and earthly/rustic looks such as a naked cake can be the ‘wow’ factor for a wedding,” Cynthia said. For those looking to finalize plans on their wedding cakes, Bertolone suggests scheduling a cake tasting and consultation as early as possible to ensure no scheduling conflicts. In 2019, Bertolone will expand her business to Montevallo with the opening of two locations. One location will be a coffee house named C’s Cakes and Coffee House, where lattes, cappuccinos, soups, sandwiches, salads and more will be served with private rooms/rentals for office meetings or rehearsal breakfasts and lunch for weddings. The second location will be an Italian restaurant and bar where Cynthia’s husband, Michael Bertolone, will be creating Italian cuisine. Cynthia said wedding parties can schedule their dinner rehearsals at the restaurant, and cake tastings and consultations can be performed at C’s Cakes and Coffee House in addition to Cake Art in Pelham. How We Met: We were set up on a blind date by some mutual friends from church. They had talked her (Carly) up for a while to me (Justin), and after a few weeks were finally able to meet. Despite the awkwardness, we both knew that the other was someone special. The Proposal: Justin and I (Carly) had a Saturday filled with our favorite things. It didn’t strike me as out of the ordinary since he’s such a planner. We started at the Pepper Place Market, and then grabbed brunch at one of my

favorite places. We planned to go hiking later in the afternoon, and there is a trail that I had been begging to take him to for the past year. He finally agreed. Little did I know that he had scouted the trail out the week before with some friends who would photograph the moment. He acted like he didn’t know where it was or how to get there. He was calm and patient. He walked me down the trail to a spot covered with rose petals and candles. I was still oblivious and thought it was for someone else. “How cute is this!?” I remarked. In the

WEDDINGS same moment, he handed me a letter that led to the question that I had always dreamed of hearing. So on that trail, on an inconspicuous afternoon, he asked me to marry him. Favorite Moments: The ceremony was beautiful, the reception was a thrill, and the joy was overwhelming. “We did it!” was common phrase between us the whole evening. Favorite Details: The venue by far. The design and atmosphere of the Stables at J&D Farms truly made our ceremony that much more special and memorable.

How We Met: Eli and I (Arden) met at Oak Mountain Presbyterian Church in 2008. All of my middle school memories include him always being the funny guy. When we led worship together our sophomore year, he told me that even though he liked ALL of my friends, he was going to marry me. I always knew Eli to throw out a dramatic statement, so I rolled my eyes knowing I would never risk our friendship by dating him. Well, he proved me very wrong and on November 2, 2013, he took me on our first date! It was fall of

my senior year, and I was again adamant that I would not go to college with a boyfriend. Very quickly I knew I was wrong as I had already fallen for my best friend. The Proposal: When we started dating our senior year, I (Eli) started keeping little memories throughout our relationship like concert tickets and notes. Almost four years later, I walked Arden into my apartment, and sitting on the table was a shoebox that I kept everything from our relationship in. We went through it together, and I got down

WEDDINGS

on one knee and told her that I knew I was going to marry her when I was 16 and I had loved her since I was 18. Then I asked if she would marry me. Favorite Moments: Eli and I (Arden) and both of our families LOVE to dance, so at the end of the reception, the DJ played “(I’ve Had) The Time of My Life” from Dirty Dancing and Eli did the iconic “lift.” Eli also drove us away in his dad’s stick shift jeep. He drove this in high school when we first started dating, so we took the top down and doors off to drive away like old times!

64 February/March 2019

How You Met: It sounds super cliché, but I (Amanda) can still remember the first time I saw Christopher at orientation before I started at his high school. We became friends, and he actually helped me pass my lifeguard certification. Later Christopher took a job as the HR coordinator at Noland Health where I had several accounts that I called on— which yes, you guessed it, put us back in touch again! We mark our “first date” as Snowmageddon in 2014. I was stranded trying to get home for 10+ hours, and he

was able to pick me up and get me back to his house. Fast forward a couple of months later: our family went through an extremely tragic period where we truly feared that my little sister might pass away, and since she has spinabifida, her being in this condition was even more dangerous. Remember that dependable and determined Christopher from Snowmageddon? He did not leave my side. He did not leave my family’s side. We were there for almost two months with my sister, and that time was when I knew I wanted to spend the

WEDDINGS rest of my life with him, and that my sister was going to be right next to me when I married him — and she sure was! Favorite Details: I had handkerchiefs handmade for my parents and Christopher’s parents, each with a personalized message on them from me. We also had s’mores favor boxes— handmade with A LOT of love by Tim, Vyckie and Jennifer Head. You can’t have a New Year’s Eve party without glow bracelets, glow necklaces, glow rings, light-up sunglasses and light-up tambourines!

The Dress: Frankie LaPorte, an incredible seamstress and costume/ dress designer and friend of mine (Alexis), created the wedding dress. Alexis’ Favorite Moment: My favorite moment was holding hands with my mom as she walked me down the aisle. My dad had passed away four months before our wedding, so the planning process was bittersweet. I worried about holding it together on the big day, but as soon as I stepped out into the yard, saw our friends and family smiling in the sunlight, and heard David

Bowie’s “Life on Mars,” I was able to relax and enjoy the moment. Will’s Favorite Moment: My favorite moment was about halfway into the reception. I remember moving back off quietly by myself for just a few minutes to take in everything. All of our friends and family were having a great time, the dance floor was going strong, and everywhere people from different parts of our lives were laughing and celebrating together. That, and the food was incredible. Favorite Details: Will and I wanted

WEDDINGS

to have a whimsical backyard celebration with our favorite people. Our family had been through a lot of loss over the past year, and we wanted our wedding to be an expression of gratitude to our friends and family for giving us so much love and support. We also wanted it to feel like a party from beginning to end. We couldn’t pick a color, so we decided to use the whole rainbow. We had bubble machines, rainbow bouquets and lawn games. Our friends from Seasick Records Club spun records, and we gave away rainbow wildflower seed bombs as favors.

How We Met: My freshman year of high school in 2009, Peter and I (Callie) were in the same Spanish class, and Peter quickly became my tutor when he saw me struggling with the material. Then the roles reversed and he was soon “forgetting how to do the homework assignments” in an effort to hang out more. We hit it off pretty quickly, and here we are almost 10 years later! The Proposal: Peter had planned a 10-day trip for us throughout Germany, Czech Republic, Slovakia

and Austria before I started PA school, and I truly had no idea he was planning to propose overseas. A few days into the trip, Peter insisted on taking a private walking tour through Prague, so we spent two hours exploring the beautiful city with our sweet tour guide, Lenka. Our last stop of the tour was the Vrtba Gardens, which offers an incredible view of all of Prague from the very top of the gardens. Lenka asked if we wanted a picture together with this view in the background, and as we’re posing for

WEDDINGS the picture, Peter tells me, “I love you a lot.” And I was just like, “Yes I love you too, smile for the picture.” And then he turned towards me, got down on one knee and said, “No, a lot.” Then he asked me to marry him, and I was absolutely speechless! Favorite Moment: Seeing Peter for the first time that day. He radiated so much pure love, joy and excitement that it nearly took my breath away!

How You Met: Andrew and I first met in high school. We both went to Vestavia, and although he was a year older than me, I always had the biggest crush on him. After high school we both went our separate ways, and then in 2014 we reconnected on Facebook and have been together ever since. The Proposal: Andrew proposed on the bridge at McCallum Park in Vestavia. We had planned to take our dogs Moose and Mia to the park that morning to explore, so it was a complete surprise. The Dress: We incorporated the lace

from my mother’s wedding dress worn 30 years ago with the Ella Grace Build-ABride dress from Heidi Elnora to create my dream heirloom gown. Favorite Moment: Riding the trolley from our ceremony to the reception. We were with our closest friends and family dancing and singing at the top of our lungs. Favorite Details: A lot of our wedding details had sentimental value to us, from the heirloom ring and cuff links that Andrew wore that were his grandfather’s to my grandfather’s handkerchief that was

WEDDINGS

wrapped around my bouquet and the ring I wore that belonged to my grandmother. I also had my florist put one single pink rose into my bouquet and every bridesmaid’s bouquet in memory of my pledge sister, Caitlyn, who I had always planned to have in my wedding party. Another one of our most favorite details was having our dogs, Moose and Mia, on our koozies and on “Fat Head” of their faces that our bridal party carried around that day. Moose and Mia show up in the background of a number of our photos, and we can’t help but laugh when we see them.

How We Met: Ryan and I (Kirsten) went to the same high school and had mutual friends, yet we actually met when we started our freshman year at Auburn University. A mutual friend introduced me to Ryan one night out with friends. We spent the whole night chatting and joking around with each other. We exchanged numbers and started texting. A few weeks later Ryan asked if I would be his date to the first football game and eventually asked me to be his girlfriend. The Proposal: After completing

my first semester of physical therapy school, Ryan took me on a date to Gianmarco’s to celebrate. On the way back from dinner he pulled off at Sibyl Temple, where he handed me a note and a rose and told me to meet him at the top. Once I got to the top, Ryan got down on one knee and proposed. Afterward he surprised me with an engagement party with our friends and family! Favorite Details: During the ceremony my brother played “Be Thou My Vision” on the piano as we walked

WEDDINGS up to the altar. At the reception the chef used my grandmother’s recipe to make Swedish meatballs, a dish that our family enjoys on special occasions and holiday meals. The band at the reception, Park Band, was always one of our favorites when they played at Auburn. What You Are Doing Now: We are currently living in Raleigh, North Carolina. Ryan is CPA, and I am completing clinical rotations for physical therapy school.

How We Met: James and I (Haley) met our first week of college at Auburn University through mutual friends. Our friendship continued to grow as we were studying at the library, going to church, hanging out with our group of friends, and playing intramural sports together. The Proposal: James proposed on our graduation day from Auburn University. James and I, both being accounting majors, got to graduate sideby-side, which I thought would be the highlight of the day. However, after eating lunch with our families, James

told me that we were going to take graduation pictures at Jordan-Hare Stadium. As we started walking into the stadium, James stopped and walked me over to a Bible engraved with “Haley Evans Haigh” and a ring box. I immediately realized what was happening and couldn’t contain my excitement! Favorite Moment: Our favorite moment of the wedding day was definitely getting to see each other for the first time. We had written each other letters the day before, and we read

WEDDINGS

them aloud to one another as we stood back-to-back before the big reveal. This was such a sweet calming time with just the two of us to let the reality of the day sink in. We then proceeded to wash each other’s feet to remind us that marriage is truly about serving each other. Favorite Details: For our first dance, we chose the song “L.O.V.E.” by Nat King Cole, played in the movie The Parent Trap. This song is meaningful to us as a couple because on our first date we watched this movie and sang along to “L.O.V.E.”

How We Met: We met at my apartment’s pool at Kenley. I (Brittany) was trying to get some afternoon rays when Jacob walked over and asked me what I was doing that night. The Proposal: Jacob proposed to me under the fireworks at Thunder on the Mountain right in the middle of the finale. The Fourth of July is our boyfriend/girlfriend anniversary, and we have now been together for eight years. The Wedding Dress: I purchased the Melissa York dress with crepe

fabric from Bride Beautiful in Atlanta. It was the fifth dress I tried on! I knew it was the one as soon as I stepped into it. Favorite Moment: My favorite moment of the day was our first dance. It was to a song he sent me when I was just realizing that hey this guy is a good guy and that maybe I should give him a chance. Favorite Details: I knew I wanted to make my own cake ever since I got into the baking business when I was 15. It was citrus cake with lemon curd

WEDDINGS filling. I couldn’t deliver my own cake, so my “work” parents Doug and Janet Allen set it up for me and also put the flowers on it. For the groom’s table I got aunts and friends to bake my favorite sweet from each them. My aunt Jerrilyn made Oreo balls, and my aunt Sybil made no bake cookies. It was a big table full of baked goods from the heart! What We Are Doing Now: We live in Chelsea with our fur baby Forrest, a golden retriever.

MY VESTAVIA HILLS Todd Freeman

Vestavia Hills City Schools Superintendent + Father of Two

Fun in the Sun

Liberty Park Splash Pad This past summer, the splash pad was a routine event for us. The boys loved to play in the water, and we could sit and relax nearby.

Movie Time

AMC Dine-In Theatre We have made it to the theatre one time and were immediately sold. There is plenty of room in the theatre with very comfortable seating. The whole family enjoyed a movie and had great food. We will be regulars!

Family Night Out

Vestavia Chick-Fil-A Our boys love going to Chick-Fil-A especially to spend time on the playground. Our go-to menu is predictable: chicken nuggets for the boys, a salad for Rachel, and the No. 1 combo for me. The boys always trade in the toys for ice cream. We love the kindness of the staff, and they always make us feel welcome.

Trick or Treating

Badham Drive Festivities This was our first year to do this, and it was so much fun. Badham Drive was full of children and parents walking from house to house. The neighbors were so excited to see the boys and gave them lots of candy. It was a very safe environment and reminiscent of my childhood.

Christmas By Candlelight

Shades Mountain Baptist Church’s Annual Celebration We are members of Shades and looked forward to CBC with great anticipation. The performance did not disappoint. It was superb and was the perfect way to start the Christmas season.
