If your new business opened, or your new home closed on time, you may have Kim Ray to thank.

Our Builder Services representative helps keep you on track. There are countless details that go into ensuring a new home closes on time, or a business is able to open. But, for SouthWest Water Company customers, construction can’t begin until Kim Ray, in our Builder Services department, has done her job. She is here to make sure builders have the support they need to establish sewer service for a new home or business. “I’m always trying to make sure I get things out on time, because I know the builder is waiting on it. A builder cannot start construction until our job is done,” Kim said. “We believe in providing excellent service. It’s not just a slogan with us. So, for example, when you call our main line during business hours, you will get a human—not an endless automated menu.”

Coordinating installations, arranging inspections, and documenting every new customer’s configuration can be a challenge. Thankfully, Kim is highly organized. And she’s always mindful that her efforts can make the difference in whether a family can move into a new home on time. Every day, Kim is working hard behind the scenes to make life a little bit easier for our customers. And we’re thankful for that. To learn more, visit CleanerCahaba.info.

ON THE COVER

The sage advice many of us brides-to-be receive is to soak up as many sweet moments as we can on our wedding day. To fully enjoy the finale of all our meticulous planning and arranging and fretting, no matter what snafus might surface, because it’s our day. After mine and Joe’s year-long engagement, I was more than ready five years ago to put this advice into practice and just celebrate our new life together with our family and friends. And I did. I relished every part of our big day, occasionally pausing to think how surreal it was to be the reason for so many people we love to have gathered in one place. I only wish it could have lasted longer, but that’s why we have photos. Every photo I look at in our album takes me back to a sweet moment from those wonderful 12 hours. I’m sure many of you would agree the day seems to pass quickly, and that’s one reason I love working on our annual wedding issue. It gives couples another chance to reflect on their big days. One of our favorite parts of the work that’s not really work is reading couples’ back stories – the sometimes unexpected meetings that led to unforgettable first dates, and the proposals that didn’t go according to the original plan but ended up all the more special because of it. Where the words end, the photos begin. You are about to see yet another collection of lovely wedding photos (shout-out to all the talented photographers!). These exquisite images from couples’ big days highlight their love stories in a vibrant way. And just before the real weddings, you’ll find a color guide by season, a wedding timeline for short and long engagements, cake samples from local bakeries and a gift guide full of ideas for your bridesmaids and groomsmen. And be sure to check out stories about Melissa Gullatte’s exquisite calligraphy and watercolor artwork in her Gracefully Made Art line and the culinary masterpieces that students in Jeff State’s new Advanced Nutrition class concocted using healthy ingredients and cooking techniques. If you have any story ideas for our upcoming issues, you know where to find me. Here’s to a happy and productive new year!

A TRIPLE OT VICTORY The Spain Park girls basketball team won the 2019 Chevron Lady Jag Classic in December with a triple-overtime victory against Pleasant Grove in the championship game. Taking on the Pleasant Grove Spartans, the Jags found themselves in a battle that came close to taking two games in one to decide a

winner after the two teams battled into a third overtime. The rest of the tournament saw Spain Park pick up wins against Albertville, Midfield and Mortimer Jordan. Spain Park improved to 14-2 on the season with its only losses coming to Class 7A No. 1 Hoover and Class 5A No. 4 Madison Academy, who the Jags have since beaten.

THE GUIDE EVENTS

SUPPORTING WREATHS ACROSS AMERICA A Hoover-based company continued its participation in the Wreaths Across America event in December. McLeod Software customer Pottle’s Transportation, located in Bangor, Maine, has been hauling wreaths down to Arlington National Cemetery since 2005 for this national event of wreath-laying ceremonies at Arlington and veterans’ cemeteries throughout the country. “We’re grateful to be a part of the convoy to Arlington again this year to bring these wreaths to the headstones of those who gave the ultimate sacrifice. Having companies like McLeod Software sponsor the decals for our trailer allows us to spread the powerful message

of Wreaths Across America all the way from Columbia Falls, Maine to Arlington National Cemetery,” says Chelsea Pottle Demmons, vice president of Pottle’s Transportation. More than 500 veteran gravesites at Currie-Jefferson Memorial Gardens South in Hoover were honored with a wreath from donations and volunteers through McLeod Software.

GRACEFULLY MADE

Melissa Gullatte’s calligraphy and watercolor designs pair beautifully in her custom-made wedding suites. BY ANNE RILEY PHOTOS BY LAUREN WINTER HooversMagazine.com 17

O

One look at the Instagram feed for Gracefully Made Art, and it becomes immediately clear that owner and artist Melissa Gullatte has an eye for great design. Each post is crafted with a swoon-worthy palette and style, and her attention to aesthetic detail provides an ideal backdrop for her work in calligraphy and watercolors. Through her business, Melissa—an Auburn University graduate who majored in business and studio art—creates breathtaking designs for wedding stationery, serving more than 100 brides per year. And those brides aren’t all local, either. Melissa’s work has been commissioned around the country and around the world, as far as England, Norway and Australia. “I have always loved

drawing and art, and knew I would do something creative with my life,” Melissa says. As a native of Hoover and a graduate of Spain Park High School, Melissa’s local roots run deep. She met her husband, Daniel, in their high school church choir, and the couple has settled down in Hoover with their dogs, Ellie and Penny. Her parents, older sister and younger brother all live in Hoover as well. When Daniel proposed, Melissa knew she wanted to do a lot of the creative aspects of the wedding herself. She taught herself calligraphy for the invitation addressing and wedding signs—and did such a good job that friends and family began asking her to help with their creative

projects, too. The requests poured in. Ultimately, Melissa became so busy that she opened an official business shortly before graduating from Auburn University—and Gracefully Made Art was born. While Melissa offers gorgeous watercolors and custom signs on her website, it’s the calligraphy that really steals the show. “I love getting to play a part in a bride’s special day,” Melissa says of her wedding stationery collection. “The invitation is the very first impression their guests will get of the wedding, and I love getting to provide something unique and beautiful for them!” Melissa’s invitation designs include something for every style. From the floral Haylie suite to the simple yet regal Madison suite, Melissa’s collection boasts 15 unique designs in a variety of shades and patterns. Brides can also commission custom gifts for their wedding party or spouse-to-be, like wooden hangers lettered with a

bridesmaid’s name, a custom return address stamp, and beautifully framed vows. A selection of watercolor offerings provides more options for gift-givers, who can choose from custom paintings of a home, wedding venue, bouquet and more. Aside from the joy of being part of someone’s wedding day, Melissa loves the variety that her job brings—but, of course, that unpredictability can also be a challenge. “No day is the same as the next, so I hop around to a lot of different tasks throughout the day, from computer design, to watercolors, to meeting with brides,” Melissa says. “Time management is definitely a crucial part of my business.” Being a one-woman show certainly does require the ability to be flexible, make the most of every hour, and produce highquality work. Melissa wears many hats while running her business, from doing the creative work to handling customer service and keeping up with the books. But her ambition isn’t limited to her thriving business; she also teaches classes at a local baton studio called Struttin’ Show-offs. Melissa grew up a competitive baton twirler and was a majorette at Auburn University for five years, serving as captain for two of those years. Now, she coaches the competitive teams at the studio she grew up going to. It makes sense that someone as talented as Melissa Gullatte would catch attention, both locally and beyond. Her work has been featured on Engaged Birmingham, Chancey Charm

But of course, her biggest fans are the brides she creates for, and Melissa works hard to make sure that her designs exceed their expectations. Her customer reviews glow with words like “wedding guardian angel,” “the best in the business” and “the best part of my wedding planning.” So it seems that any bride who commissions Melissa to design her invitations, programs and more will come away with designs as unforgettable as the occasions for which they were created. Hydrangeas Under the Stars Hydrangeas under the stars...a late spring night with frogs croaking, fireflies blinking and starlight illuminating the hydrangea blooms, one of Mother Nature’s greatest gifts. The Gardens has been celebrating hydrangeas for over 15 years with a party aptly named Hydrangeas Under the Stars! Guests are greeted with cold prosecco as they walk past rows of Snowflake Hydrangeas, Eddie Aldridge’s gift to the world, up to the Pavilion for the silent auction with a varied array of items. Prepared by Chef Joseph Mitchell’s outstanding students from Jefferson State Community College’s Culinary and Hospitality Institute, this dinner gives future chefs a chance to shine! We love setting records at Aldridge Gardens, and in 2019 we had over 90,000 visitors pass through our gates. We became a KultureCity Sensory Inclusive Garden too, and are committed to make all Gardens’ trails accessible. Winter weddings are beautiful! While people were enjoying family time over the Holidays, we were hosting beautiful dream weddings for brides at Aldridge Gardens. Early January brought needed rain to Aldridge Gardens, and our lake is at full pool for the first time in over a year. This is important, not just for the beauty of a full lake, but because we irrigate from the lake. With Springtime just round the corner, that supply of water is needed for our many Hydrangeas and other plants throughout the Gardens. Welcome to 2020! Summer Camps, Spring Field Trips and our Spring Plant Sale are scheduled and planning is underway for our annual fundraiser, Hydrangeas Under the Stars. The date is Saturday, June 6th, starting at 6 pm with a reception and silent auction in the Pavilion, followed by an amazing dinner and live auction under the big tent, in the center of the Gardens. BOOK NOOK

Southern Voices 2020 The holidays have passed, the New Year has arrived, and here at Hoover Library, we are counting down the days until the Southern Voices Festival. Our annual celebration of literature and the arts begins with a reception honoring Opelika artist and educator Carlton Nell on Feb. 18 at 5:30 p.m. A professor of art at Auburn University, his paintings and drawings can be found in galleries and private collections across the country. The reception is free and open to the public, and Nell’s works will be on display on the Theatre Level throughout February. Instead of a musical act, this year’s Wednesday and Thursday night performances will feature two oneLibrary Specialist act plays: Graceland and Asleep on Fiction Department the Wind. Both related vignettes are directed by Henry Scott and offer a warm-hearted and charming look at the human experience. Tickets to the performances and a reception are available from Thelibrarytheatre.com or by calling The Library Theatre Box Office at (205) 444-7888. The award-winning crime author Laura Lippman will kick off the literary portion of the festival with a program, reception and book signing on Feb. 21 at 7 p.m. in The Library Theatre. A former journalist, Lippman has penned over 20 best-selling novels, including the popular Tess Monaghan series. Her most recent novel, Lady in the Lake, has made frequent appearances on best-of lists in 2019. This year’s Author Conference features nine writers representing an array of genres. You will not want to miss Kimberly Belle, Emily Carpenter, Lauren K. Denton, Sally Kilpatrick, Sarah MacLean, Hampton Sides, George Singleton, Naima Simone and Snowden Wright on Saturday, Feb. 22 from 9 a.m. to 4 p.m. Tickets for the festival are on sale now! You can purchase them online at Southernvoices.info or by calling The Library Theatre Box Office at (205) 444-7888. Tickets to the theatrical performance on Wednesday and Thursday are $27.50; tickets to An Evening with Laura Lippman on Friday are $40; and tickets to the Author Conference on Saturday are $45. New this year, you can buy bundled tickets to all three events for $100. We hope you are as excited as we are about this year’s lineup and look forward to seeing you at the 2020 Southern Voices Festival!

Jefferson State’s Culinary Director Joseph Mitchell, right, talks to his Advanced Nutrition students as they plate food for guests of a special luncheon they hosted in December.

A four-course meal served on a white tablecloth is not a normal lunch for most people, especially in the middle of a workday. But it’s what the students in Chef Joseph Mitchell’s Advanced Nutrition class at the Jefferson State Community College Shelby-Hoover Campus whipped up for guests as an end-of-semester project and served with a side of scrupulous notes about the nutritional value of each dish. And—spoiler alert—it ended with many in attendance pausing their praises of the students’ work only to ask for the recipes. The meal was more than just a fancy lunch for guests, although it did carry the quality and presentation of a fine dining experience, complete with attentive table service. The four-course medley of gourmet cuisine was also an experiential presentation through which the students tested their cooking skills and shared what they had learned about ingredient selection and nutrition with a new audience—a diverse group comprised of

administrators from dietetics departments at local universities, students with a culinary background studying dietetics, and other members of the community connected to the initiative Mitchell is leading at JSCC to strengthen nutrition education. What better way to prove that healthy food doesn’t have to be bland than to recruit a few taste-testers to try it? With their task before them, students Maya Hawkins, James Brantley and their classmates rolled up their sleeves and got to work, planning and executing the luncheon from start to finish. Maya and her three group members prepared and served a blueberry tarragon tart with hazelnut crust for dessert. For Hawkins, the project mirrored her experiences working as a line cook at The Club in Birmingham. “It was very similar to how we would present some other dishes at The Club,” she says. “We were working on timing, and that was a nice practice. Some people might not have had all the work experience,

but for me, it was something I was comfortable with.” Brantley was comfortable with the project, too, mostly because of his work at another Birmingham restaurant. He and his group members were responsible for making and serving the main entrée of the luncheon: ricotta and goat cheese gnocchi with Tuscan kale sauce. “We had a textbook that broke down the healthy cooking,” he says. “We had previously cooked several of the entrées. We came to an agreement as a class that that was our favorite entrée, and a good one to choose for the luncheon.” Brantley’s group modified the recipe a bit, using some whole wheat flour and adding red pepper flakes to the kale sauce for extra seasoning. For the most part, however, they followed the recipe as it was written since it met the group’s high level of nutritional criteria. “We didn’t want to change the overall recipe too much because we thought it was nutritionally very sound,” he says. “We were happy with the nutritional content of it. It was pretty much what we had wanted it to be.” As director of Hospitality and Culinary Management at JSCC, Mitchell was eager to share an overview of the

Service/Culinary Management. JSCC has also added a certificate in Culinary Nutrition Management and formed articulation agreements with Montevallo’s nutrition program, plus a path for Samford University nutrition students to take Culinary Nutrition Certificate at JSCC. “We are changing our philosophy position on how we approach nutrition in our curriculum development,”

Mitchell says. “We have modified our program’s mission statement to reflect this: ‘We advocate sustainability in food preparation practices and strive to educate our students both personally and professionally of an understanding of how healthy food choices and food preparations affect both themselves and society.’ We’ve identified that consumers are looking for more healthy foods.” In less formal terms, the new curriculum aims at giving students a foundation in healthy cooking techniques (steaming rather than frying foods, for instance), and how seemingly small changes can combat health conditions such as heart disease, high cholesterol and diabetes. The curriculum also allows students to compare ingredients and calculate the nutritional value of meals based on ingredients’ components. “It’s a journey,” Mitchell says. “We’re not trying to eliminate, but we are trying to make the dishes healthier.” And in the spirit of professionalism, students weren’t

just focused on the taste and nutritional value of each dish they served at their luncheon. They plated the gnocchi, blueberry tart and the other two courses (tortilla soup and red salad) as if they were being served to the most prestigious of food critics. “Presentation is huge when it comes to working in the restaurant industry,” Brantley says. “They say you eat with your eyes first. Not only do you want to execute the taste, but the presentation as well.” Hawkins says she has always been interested in making food for people with special diets, so the Advanced Nutrition class was a natural fit for her interests. Plus, it showed her the benefits of certain ingredients used in moderation and how a variety of foods served in smaller portions can be just as filling as one large portion of something in a meal. “I think it was really eye-opening for me,” she says. “It was great to get hands-on experience with it and learn what ingredients I can use to make a variety of dishes. It was nice getting to try something new that I hadn’t experienced in any other

class or out in the field.” Brantley says he learned he didn’t have to sacrifice flavor—or presentation—for better nutrition. “Cooking on the healthier side doesn’t have to be bland,” he says, with all the confidence of someone who just aced his final exam—or, in this case, final meal project. “I thought we executed it well.”

FIVE QUESTIONS FOR

Eileen and George McCluney Farrelly’s Southern Bar & Kitchen Owners

PHOTO BY MARY MARGARET CHAMBLISS PHOTOGRAPHY

Hoover residents Eileen and George McCluney ventured into the world of restaurant ownership in 2010, when they opened Beef ‘O’ Brady’s at The Grove. Seven years later, they opened their second location in Helena. When they became empty nesters, the McCluneys looked to family history and fine dining for their third eatery, Farrelly’s Southern Bar & Kitchen at The Grove. We chatted with them about food, family and bringing a new restaurant to the city. George, how did you get into the restaurant business? It was really just by fluke more than anything. I really wanted to change careers after being in banking for 10 years. In the back of my mind, I knew I really wanted to be in the hospitality industry. We liked the Beef ‘O’ Brady’s concept after visiting a Florida location and looked into their franchise opportunities. After hearing the news that The Grove would be a new shopping location built near us, we both thought this would be the perfect opportunity to make that move. What was your motivation for opening a third restaurant? We thought this was it for us – our two locations for the Beef’s franchise – and we were good, until we became empty nesters. We found out that the building previously occupied by The Boot at the Grove would be available, and we just could not see letting that beautiful building go to some nameless national company. How You Met: Brooks and I (Emily) both graduated in the class of 2014 from Hoover High School, and although we had similar friend groups, we had never had a conversation. He went off to Troy University, and I went to Mississippi State University after graduation. Brooks decided to transfer from Troy to MSU after his freshman year to pursue an engineering degree. One of our mutual friends convinced him to reach out to me so he could come visit the campus before he transferred in the fall. We decided to meet up and grab dinner

while we were both home for Easter. We sat at Taco Mama for hours that night sharing stories and laughing about how crazy it was that we never met before. One date led to two, and by the time Brooks transferred to Mississippi State he was off the market! The Proposal: On our very first date, Brooks took me to Kings Chair at Oak Mountain State Park, and every year after we went back to Kings Chair whenever we were home for a break. Brooks planned a seemingly normal

How You Met: We went to high school together. We did not know each other well at the time, but Jason’s brother and my (Lauryn’s) sister are high school sweethearts. Once they were engaged and married in June 2015, we started seeing each other more often, usually spending time with each other at Iron Bowl parties (He’s an Auburn grad; I’m an Alabama grad). He asked me to come with him to Mobile for a Mardi Gras ball as a friend in February 2017. We talked the entire time on the drive and bonded over our love of music. We spent the

weekend with his family and went to the ball that Saturday, where he kissed me. The Proposal: Our first actual date was to get a beer and burgers a couple weeks after Mardi Gras. I think we were both worried it was going to be awkward, but we ended up staying at the restaurant until it closed. When the time came for him to ask me to marry him, he went by my parents’ house to talk to my dad and get my parents’ blessing. Soon after, he came to pick me up to go to Trader Joe’s because we were planning to cook

The cashier made an offhand comment about how we must be keeping our groceries separate in the cart until Jason “put a ring on it.” When we got back to my house, I noticed that he wasn’t really helping me unload the groceries from their bags as usual. I had a pizza stone in one hand when he grabbed the other and started saying a lot of really sweet things to me. When he got down on one knee, he used my full name to pop the question and slipped my ring on my finger after I said “yes.”

How You Met: Russ and I (Meagan) met at his little brother’s wedding in February 2016. We were both in the bridal party and met for the first time at the engagement party and reconnected at the rehearsal dinner. We really hit it off at the reception. We talked most of the night and went on our first date a couple of weeks later. The Proposal: We had been dating for a little over three years and had talked about the possibility of getting married. On a Thursday afternoon, we

ate dinner at his house and went on a walk afterward. Russ lives in Riverchase along the golf course, and we enjoy walking the cart path. We walked down to hole #4, or “our spot,” where there is a rock overlook onto the Cahaba River. I noticed the six dozen colorful spray roses on the exposed rock that Russ had carefully lain out. When I first saw them, I didn’t realize they were for me. As I was starting to piece everything together, Russ pulled me close and told me the reasons he wanted me to be his wife. Russ had brought out a couple of

How You Met: We (Ashleigh and Alex) actually met on Bumble. Our conversations started on Oct. 8, 2017, just after my graduation from chiropractic school. We talked for a few weeks before finally having a first date on Oct. 28. As crazy as it sounds, finding the love of your life on an app is a real possibility. It sure worked for us! The Proposal: Alex proposed at the exact place that he knew he loved me – on the sidewalk in the Lakeview District of downtown Birmingham. One of his

groomsmen was hiding in the bushes to take pictures. Afterwards, we met our family for dinner followed by drinks at the local brewery with close friends to celebrate. Favorite Moment: Instead of doing a true first look prior to the ceremony, we opted for a blind first look which allowed us to pray together. It set the tone for our entire ceremony, and I still was able to have that emotional reaction from Alex as he watched me walk down the aisle.

WEDDINGS Favorite Wedding Details: During the planning process, we realized that it was important for us to have a head table that truly exemplified two families becoming one. Cece from Cece Designs knocked it out of the park with the flowers and design! It turned out better than we could have ever imagined. Another sentimental detail was my bouquet. I had lace from my mother’s wedding dress and her rosary wrapped around the stems of the bouquet.

66 February/March 2020

How You Met: It was the last semester of my senior year at Auburn University, and I (Mary Kate) was getting ready for my last formal as a Tri Delta. Some of our good friends from Mobile were coming into town to be our dates, and our friend Vaughan (who was my date) was in charge of bringing a blind date for one of my best friends: Molly Jones. Enter: John David Galloway – handsome, tall drink of water! Although we were not each other’s dates, we quickly struck up a friendship and kept in touch. The

summer before I started occupational therapy school, John David asked me to be his girlfriend. The Proposal: John David surprised me at Chewacla State Park with a quick hike (while I was in a sun dress and sandals, by the way) down to the waterfall. He dropped down on one knee with the most beautiful ring and asked me to spend forever with him. All the while, his precious sister, Caroline, was hiding behind a boulder photographing the entire scene! She wins MVP of the

day because she was stuck in hiding for over an hour. As if he didn’t surprise me enough with the proposal, John David somehow managed to sneak both of our families to Auburn as well, and they were all waiting to celebrate with us at Acre restaurant. All I can say is: ugly crying. It was the most perfect day. Favorite Moment: I loved getting dressed with my mom and my sister after a morning of glam with my bridesmaids, and I will always treasure the first look with my dad.

How You Met: Kyle and I (Shannon) met at a conference for our current employer, N2 Publishing. We became best friends and remained that way for a little while until I approached Kyle for something more. He noted that we were on the same page, and our dating relationship began. At the time I was living in Panama City for work, so we traveled between there and Hoover every couple of days.

for their permission to marry me while visiting in Texas for the holidays. Kyle then made me wait for FOUR more months. I wanted to genuinely be surprised, so any outing out of the ordinary would have been suspect. He proposed to me in our condo, and I have no idea what he said because I cried the whole time! This was the night of his high school reunion, so we kind of got a built-in engagement party by default.

The Proposal: After a little over a year of dating, Kyle asked my parents

Favorite Moment: We had one of those wedding days where genuinely

WEDDINGS nothing went wrong, and if it did, we have already forgotten. Our ceremony was beautiful with many happy tears as we read our own vows and made our lifelong promises. We truly could not ask for more. Then came our reception, which was an absolute blast! One of my favorite memories was our last dance, which was to “Time of Your Life” from Dirty Dancing. Completely unrehearsed, we decided to do the lift at the end! This, of course, was not as perfect as the one in the movie, but it made to a very memorable ending before we departed.

The Proposal: I (Jordan) had finished my last day of law school the day before, and my mom had been planning a surprise graduation party at the Tutwiler Hotel. Little did I know, this was not just a graduation party. I walked in the lobby of the hotel to my great aunt playing “our song” (Mine Would Be You by Blake Shelton) on the piano. Alex said, “There is something on the piano for you.” It was a little gift bag with a note that he had written a few years before that said “Mine WILL be you,” along with a card. While I was

reading the card filled with the story of how we met and the moment he knew he wanted to marry me, my friends and family were hiding in the next room. I looked up and he was on one knee with the prettiest ring I have ever seen. We celebrated the night with our closest friends and family! Favorite Moment: My favorite moment from our wedding day was throwing the first pitch together before our reception. Alex played collegiate baseball for Samford University, so

baseball was a huge part of our lives. I always thought it would be so perfect to have our reception at Regions Field. When we found out we could throw the first pitch at the game that night, we knew we had picked the right venue! What You Are Doing Now: We bought our first house in Hoover. Alex is a project manager and I (Jordan) am a judicial assistant for a judge in Tuscaloosa County.

How You Met: We met at a Young Professionals small group through church. He (Alan) walked up to me (Amanda) with an unshaven mustache that was supposed to be a joke, asking my name and if I liked tacos. The Proposal: His family was gracious enough to invite me on a cruise. He blocked off the back balcony one night, and we watched the sunset before he got down on one knee. Favorite Moments: 1) As we were

walking back down the aisle, we saw the faces of those we love most and heard gleeful cheers, and I felt so happy to be with my favorite person. My new husband dipped me into a big kiss. 2) My bridesmaids tried to convince me that if rain on your wedding day is good luck, tornados on your wedding day must be “super good luck.” 3) Our amazing DJ formed a Congo line with my husband and me at the front. When it came back around, the rest of the line danced around us in a circle that kept getting closer. 4) My wedding planner

WEDDINGS arranged a sweet secret dinner in the wine cellar for my hubby and me after the ceremony and pictures. 5) Alan’s favorite: When the music began and he got to see everyone walking down the aisle and remembering all the memories, special moments and reasons why they were walking down the aisle towards him— especially the last person. What You Are Doing Now: I (Amanda) am working in human resources while pursuing an MBA. Alan currently works in finance.

WHY I LOVE HOOVER

Shelley Shaw

Hoover City Schools Foundation Interim Executive Director PHOTO CONTRIBUTED

Shelley has lived all over Alabama, but she and her husband, Mike, have lived in their Hoover home since they bought it in 2001. When they aren’t there, they’re likely at the beach, the lake or in Auburn—Shelley’s alma mater and their daughter’s current school. Shelley also spends much of her time at Spain Park High School, where her son is a freshman. She has worked with the SPHS majorettes for the last three years and helped start the Jaguar Twirling Club. We talked to Shelley about how she balances everything with her current position as the Hoover City Schools Foundation’s interim executive director.

The Foundation has one client – the Hoover City Schools. A grant cycle is in place that brought over $50,000 in 2019 to teachers with innovative ideas that our students benefit from. For example, those Chromebooks every third grader receives are a result of some innovative teaching strategies that the Foundation was able to fund. I can give many, many more examples. I can assure you the Foundation touches every student’s education in Hoover, past, How did you first get involved with the present and future. Hoover City Schools Foundation? We have always been supporters of the When did you become interim executive Foundation, especially at the yearly Denim director of the foundation? I was serving as vice president of the and Dining event, the signature fundraiser board of directors, and in October of 2019, of the Foundation. The event showcases teacher grants and the SeedLab program. the officers asked me to consider coming off Add in great food, a stellar silent auction the board and stepping into this role. Once and terrific entertainment, and it soon the board gave approval I became the became a do-not-miss event for us! So put it interim executive director. on your calendar for 2020 – April 3 at the Stardome here in Hoover. After serving as president of the Hoover Parent Teacher Council, I applied to become a board member in 2017. I had also served as PTO president at Rocky Ridge Elementary and participated in several committees at the Central Office. Applying for the HCSF board was a great next step for me! How does the foundation benefit local students and their families? 88 February/March 2020

volunteer base with more members of the board, along with a new component of the organization called Friends of the Foundation, is a major focus. Currently, we have 15 board members that serve a threeyear term and have several responsibilities throughout their term. The Friends of the Foundation are comprised of community members selected to be an extension of the board with less of a time commitment. Both groups are a great way to get more people involved, for folks to bring their energy and talents, and serve the students of Hoover City Schools. To sum it up, during my time in non-profit work and volunteerism, I have found that people have three resources they can give: their time, their talent or their treasure. My goal as interim executive director is to increase the Foundation in these areas. What school issue are you especially passionate about, and why? Recently, I was made aware that 1 in 5 school-aged children nationally is dealing with a mental health issue. One in 20 nationally have a serious mental health issue. While many of these students find help through their families, friends, churches and other support systems, some of our students need more. Legislation is being proposed in Montgomery that could be a source of funding these important mental health initiatives. I can get behind that. Schools across the state recognize this issue, and more needs to be done by local, state and federal levels.

What do you love about Hoover? I’ve lived in all kinds of towns, some with plenty and some without. We’ve got a lot to What are your main objectives in this offer our community here. Without a doubt leadership role? First and foremost, the priority for me is a terrific education is available for all of our raising more money for Hoover City students. There are plenty of fun and Schools. We have a fantastic board of interesting places to eat. Besides the food, directors, and they are behind this 100 the schools and the convenience, what I percent. The Foundation has been around really love are the people. Everyone has a for 25 years, and thanks to previous leaders story, and the greatest part is they are all and board members, the organization is different. My kids have had friends from all poised for the next level in fund over the world, and they live right here in development. Secondly, increasing the Hoover.
