W

ell, here we are. It’s that magical time of year where summer is starting to fade into fall. It makes for great weather conditions, but more importantly, it means we’re at the beginning of another year of Shelby County football. And what a year it figures to be. There are storylines everywhere, and we’re here to cover them all for you. For starters, in “From Dream to Team,” we take you in-depth on the new Helena Huskies squad. From profiling the senior class to introducing you to some of the key people who helped bring the program to life, we hope to show you that behind every touchdown, there are people who put in a lot of hard work to see a dream come true. Of course, we’d be remiss if we didn’t give you an update on the shakeup within the Alabama High School Athletic Association. In January, the AHSAA announced it was forming a new classification of football for the largest schools in the state, and three of our schools — Oak Mountain, Spain Park and Thompson — moved up to the new 7A, while others were placed in new classes and/or regions. Our story

“Calling an Audible” takes a look at the effect that the shake up had on teams across Shelby County. We also have two strong profile pieces on Spain Park quarterback Mason Duke and Pelham head coach Brett Burnett, written by Josh Ethridge, that give you a look at life outside of football. I’d like to take this time to thank our sales reps for getting the community interested in this magazine, our amazing design team for bringing these stories to life, our photographer Jon Goering for the great photos that give the stories muscle and all of the county’s coaches and players for working with us to bring you the stories beyond the gridiron. Mostly, I want to thank you for reading. Without you, there wouldn’t be a Shelby County Football, and to be a part of this Alabama Press Association awardwinning piece is humbling beyond words. With that out of the way, there’s nothing between you and this football game you’re about to watch. It’s high time we kickoff another great season. The teams are ready, the coaches are ready, and I’m ready. Here’s hoping your team is the last one standing when this year’s over!

From dream to team Huskies embark on inaugural season Written by DREW GRANTHUM Photographs by JON GOERING and CONTRIBUTED or the first time in 11 years, Shelby County will have a brand-new varsity football program take the field. By the time the lights come on to kick off the 2014 season, the Helena Huskies’ first squad will have completed quite a journey. The team was merely a dream this time last year, with work being done on the team’s facilities though

August. As the Huskies prepare to embark on their inaugural season, one must understand that there is more to this new program than just players and coaches. Behind the touchdowns, pep rallies and cheers from the crowd, there are several moving parts and people that helped the squad go from dream to team.

HEAD OF THE HUSKIES

Watt Parker is no stranger to Shelby County. After a 10-year stint as an

assistant coach at Thompson High under head coach Ricky Seale, Parker took over as head coach of the Chelsea Hornets in 2002. In four seasons with the Hornets, Parker led the squad to a 34-14 record, including an appearance in the third round of the playoffs on 2005 — the farthest the program has gone in the postseason. From there, Parker moved to Arab High, where he led the Knights to their first playoff win in program history in 2010, in addition to serving as the school’s athletic director.

While he may be best known for leading on the field, Parker is no stranger to challenging students in the classroom as well. He has taught various forms of math for 22 years, including AP calculus. After eight seasons at the helm of the Knights, the chance to return to Shelby County was too good to pass up. On Dec. 20, 2013, Parker became the first coach and athletic director in Helena High School history. While the area may not have been new to Parker, building a program from the ground up certainly was. “It’s (my) first one, so it’s learning as I go,” he said in a January interview. “The biggest thing is prioritizing the needs (of the program) and trying to locate the best people we can find for the entire school.” Starting in January, Parker began putting together the pieces of the program. Of course, in order for the

program to acquire the necessary equipment — namely weights, shoulder pads and jerseys — the Huskies needed some help.

A HELPING HAND

It’s no secret that football equipment can be pricey. The price to outfit one player with the best and safest gear possible can run anywhere from $500-600, and that’s just for one player. Outfitting an entire team can be astronomical, and that’s before one takes into consideration purchasing workout clothes, gloves and of course, weights and other equipment. Simply put, it can’t be done alone. Which is where the Helena Athletic Association came in. The HAA was formed when a few parents of athletes at Helena came together to help provide a support system for athletics in the city. Jarrod Rose, one of the founding members of the HAA, said the group started with a few members who had a passion for helping the city’s sports programs. “Originally it was a group of five of us,” he said. “With Helena being small and not (having) a lot of storefronts, we decided we were going to (have) one organization to…provide funding (for) all sports.” Instead of a booster club representing a singular sport, the group decided to form an association that could meet the needs of not just football, but each sport that Helena High, Middle and Intermediate schools field. A tall order, to be sure, and one that couldn’t be fulfilled by a standard booster club. With that in mind, Rose said the group decided to find a way to be able to raise funds to help each team. “A year into it, we decided to form (a) non-profit,” he said. “We started fundraising and putting PR out there. In 2012 we got our 501(c)(3) status. Since then, we’ve been raising money.” With the new high school announcing it intended to

field football, Rose said the association sought to provide funding for all equipment to help cut costs for parents and the school. “We went and took a loan,” he said. “A lot of it went into weights and uniforms for the fall sports. It consumed close to around a $90,000 loan.” With the money, Parker was able to purchase home jerseys, away jerseys, sets of pads, helmets and weight equipment, among other items. “A lot of (the program) started with great support from the athletic association,” Parker said. “That was a big thing. (They’ve) done a great job with fundraising. We believe in not burdening parents with extra fees.” Even with the purchases, Rose said there were still other items that needed attention though out the school year. “(There’s been) a lot of time put in just trying to get it put together,” he said. “There’s still a big need,” he said. “We’ll start with fall sports and move forward.” With the funding of equipment taken care of, there were still a few logistical issues the team had to work around — namely the construction of facilities.

MAKING THE MOST OUT OF LIMITED SPACE

While the athletic association was able to procure the necessary equipment, one thing the HAA couldn’t help Parker with was facility space. As with a new school building, new athletic amenities have to built, and unfortunately for the team, the construction was scheduled during summer practice months. Without a high school-specific place to practice, Parker said the team was reliant on the generosity of the neighboring middle school. Not only did the middle school team allow the Huskies’ varsity to host spring practices on its field, the coaching staff pitched in while Parker’s staff was being hired. “(Their staff) got on board,” he said. “(They) ran the

middle school spring training and turned around and ran varsity spring training.” The two squads had to work around each others’ schedules, meaning time on the field with the players came at a premium, Parker said. The squad was able to practice a few times during the summer, and competed at 7-on-7 camps in the Birmingham area with strong results, Parker said. “We faced some very stiff competition,” he said. “We played really well, I thought. I thought we handled it well and learned from our mistakes.”

HEADING TOWARD THE FALL

With the summer workouts all but finished, both the coaching staff and the community are expressing excitement as the Huskies get ready to take the field. “The community has been hungry for (this) for a long time,” Parker said. “That’s the neatest thing, how everyone wants it.”

10

2014 SHELBY COUNTY FOOTBALL

While practice time has been limited, and concessions have been made to work around construction, Parker said he knew his team will be ready for the opener. “When you start from scratch, there’s not a book out there,” he said. “It’s a fair amount of trial and error. The most important thing to me is to

keep making sure we (put) the right people into place.” Rose agreed. “It’s exciting for the community,” he said. “We’ve had great support. That first home game, Helena is going to show pride and the hard work that was put into it. I can’t wait to be there, either.”

DOUBLE DUTY

Spain Park’s Duke leads on diamond, gridiron

T

he Spain Park High School Jaguars are busy gearing up for the 2014 season. They hope to build upon the success they had last season when they went 9-3 in the regular season, only losing one game in their region. A lot of their success will hinge upon their new starting quarterback, Mason Duke. Duke is better known around campus as the star of the baseball team. His pitching prowess is known across the state. In the playoffs, he went 3-1 with a 0.84 ERA, with four complete games, during the Jaguars run to the state championship. Mason will look to carry over his success on the mound to the gridiron this fall. He has been busy with baseball activities this summer but he joined the team as they played a 7-on7 tournament at Samford University.

12

2014 SHELBY COUNTY FOOTBALL

Written by JOSH ETHRIDGE | Photographs by JON GOERING and DREW GRANTHUM Head coach Shawn Raney understands the importance of Mason’s baseball obligations but is looking forward to getting his quarterback back working with the team. “He has been going to lots of showcases for baseball so he has missed quite a bit of summer workouts,” said Raney. “It’s understandable because his future is baseball.” Raney said he encourages his athletes to play multiple sports. He believes the experience can be beneficial in several ways. It gives the players an opportunity to experience different levels of adversity in other sports and also keeps them in shape year round. “If kids want to play other sports I’m all for it because I think it is important for a kid to get as much competition as they can,” said Raney. “He got to experience pitching in a

state championship series and a lot of pressure was on him.” “I think it will go a long ways when we are lining up against tougher competition because he has been there and done that,” Raney said. Raney said he also thinks Mason is ready for the job from a mental standpoint. His past experience with quarterback battles and game experience from last season should give him a head start on establishing himself in a starting role. “I think he is excited about winning the job, this is his time, he is ready to take on that challenge” said Raney. Mason also believes he is ready to take the reigns. He attributes that to learning the position from the quarterbacks he has played behind. As a sophomore Duke played behind the 2012 Gatorade Alabama Football Player of the Year, Nick Mullens.

“Being the starting quarterback after having to be under Nick Mullens and learning from him was a good opportunity,” said Duke. “It has prepared me to be that person and lead the team.” Many successful quarterbacks are vocal leaders on the team but Mason prefers to take a different approach. He isn’t a talkative guy, but his actions on the field earn the respect of his teammates. “I’m not really a much of a talker, I let other people do the talking and I just lead on the field,” Mason said. On the next level, Duke wants to play college baseball. He knows that his talents translate better to the baseball diamond. However, he is not limiting his options to just one sport. “If the opportunity occurs, I’m definitely going to try to play both sports because it will help me with my strength and athleticism,” said Mason. Mason admits that being a multi-sport athlete can be challenging in many ways. He has to find time to balance every aspect of his life. “It’s a grind playing high school sports, keeping up with grades and spending time with friends,” said Duke. “You definitely have to balance your time and know when your assignments are due, it’s a grind for sure.” As far as expectations go Duke said he is pretty positive about his team and the direction they are going in. He thinks a run in the playoffs isn’t out of the question. “The camaraderie is definitely there and the talent is definitely there,” said Mason. “It’s going to be fun this season and I think we will do well.” Spain Park kicks off their season Aug. 22 as they travel to Decatur to take on the Austin High School Black Bears.

Calling an audible Coaches weigh in on AHSAA reclassification

W

ith the Jan. 22 announcement from the Alabama High School Athletic Association that there will be reclassification of schools to accommodate the new Class 7A — reserved for the member schools in the state with the highest enrollment — all but three Shelby County schools (Pelham, Shelby County and Vincent) will move up in classification. Three county schools (Thompson, Oak Mountain and Spain Park) will move into the new class, and will face the likes of Hoover, Mountain Brook and Vestavia Hills in Region 3. While the task of competing is daunting, Oak Mountain head coach Cris Bell said his players were looking forward to it. “We’ve got a challenging region,” he said. “I think we’re looking forward to getting back to (a few) neighborhood rivalries.” Bell also said he expected the new

14

Written by DREW GRANTHUM Illustration by JONATHAN WISE class long before it was announced. “It’s not a surprise,” he said. “It was just a matter of time. I think from (the perspective) of our fans, it’s great.” Bell also cited not having to travel to the Montgomery schools as a plus. “Tuscaloosa County will be our farthest trip,” he said. “From a gate (money) perspective, it’ll be great for us and our community.” Chelsea head coach Chris Elmore echoed Bell’s sentiment, as his Hornets have battled being one of the smallest schools in 6A competition for the last two seasons. The realignment places Chelsea as one of the bigger 6A schools. “We’re obviously excited about the forming of the 7A class because it puts us at the top of 6A (in terms of enrollment),” he said. “It puts you on a little more even playing ground. Our guys have had a really good attitude in the offseason. I think the biggest part for us is the newness of it.” Shelby County head coach Heath

Childers steps into his first year at the reins of the Wildcats, who stay in Class 5A but move to a new region. The ‘Cats go from being one of the smaller 5A schools to in the middle in terms of enrollment. Childers said even though the squad takes on perennial powers Central Clay County and Tallassee, he felt his team was looking forward to the challenge. “At the end of the day, you want local teams for gates,” he said. “I think Central Clay is going to bring a crowd. They support their team. I’m excited about playing (them). We’ll find out really quick where we are and how far we’ve got to go.” The Calera Eagles will move from Class 4A to 5A, but head coach Wiley McKeller said little will change in terms of his team’s attitude toward the game. “Ultimately, it’s about us being able to prepare,” he said. “There’ll be some travel, but we’ll be alright.”

That said, McKeller acknowledged the difficulties of long road trips during the season. Calera’s farthest opponent, Sumter Central in Livingston, is 119 miles away. “There’s a lot of planning and budget that goes into it,” he said. “Gas and mileage become part of it. These road trips are tough. It’s an obstacle.” Vincent’s Jason Hill agreed. While the Yellow Jackets stay in Class 2A, they will face a completely new set of opponents in their region. The closest opponent to Vincent is Fayetteville, 21 miles away; the farthest being Pickens County High, 113 miles away. “Our travel is going to be

astronomical,” he said. “I’m kind of disappointed to have so much money invested in travel, but I understand the (AHSAA)’s trying to make things as equal as possible.” Despite the travel, Hill, thought the reclassification was needed. “I think the (creation) of the 7A class is a good thing,” he said. “Sometimes the (difference in enrollment between 6A schools) was 1,000 kids. I think it equalizes the playing field across the state.” Still, not every coach was enthused to the change. Montevallo head coach Andrew Zow said the move from 3A to 4A didn’t do the Bulldogs any favors.

4A

“It really affects us,” he said. “We move to the middle of 3A (in terms of enrollment) to the bottom of 4A. Number wise, I didn’t like it, but we’ll go play football.” Zow said his squad was low on numbers, and playing even bigger schools than what the Dawgs faced in 2013 could hurt a team already struggling to find depth. “Right now, I have 11 guys working out that are not playing basketball,” he said in a Jan. 2014 interview. “We’ll be sitting at 25-30 (players on the roster) at 4A. I’d rather be more evenly matched, but we’ll still battle and believe.”

new class and a new look is the name of the game for the 2014 Calera Eagles. The program moves up to Class 5A following the realignment announced by the AHSAA in January 2014, and with it comes a change in identity. After

a strong season that saw the Eagles go to the second round of playoffs, the times are changing. Gone are the days of Ronnie Clark driving the offense with his running abilities or deep passes to Jordan Bishop, as both have graduated. While the defense hangs on to playmakers Dylan Reddin and Ty

was quietly getting playing time and experience in the second half of those games. Evans steps in to the starting role in 2014, and brings with him an explosive arm that has the staff at Calera optimistic about his ability to make plays. Evans, who transferred from Montevallo two seasons ago, worked under former Alabama quarterback Andrew Zow in developing his passing game. If he can get on page early, he looks to have a successful season.

Defensive Line

Calera sends a battle-tested group of leaders to line up on the defensive line in 2014. Dylan Reddin returns as a starter, and Ty James moves from offensive line back to defense this season. The duo are joined up front by Thompson, who serves double duty on offense and defense this season.

Linebackers

Defensive stronghold Coby Mize has graduated, but the linebacking corps are in good shape in terms of talent and depth. Senior Lane Johnson returns, and sophomore brothers Jaramy and Alex Dozier look to make an impact early. The brothers’ potential has the coaching staff at Calera impressed, and the two look to get a great deal of experience early. In addition to the trio,

ver since moving up to AHSAA Class 6A, Chelsea has put up a respectable fight week in and week out. Being one of the smaller schools in the class, however, usually led to the Hornets losing a battle of attrition, as depth came at a premium. Not the case anymore, as Chelsea figures to be one of the beneficiaries of the new realignment, going from one of the smaller schools in the class to in the top-20 largest. Receivers

Last season’s leader in receptions, Josh Pugh, returns to the receiving corps, while Adam Holliday looks to spend time at the position as well. The coaching staff is looking for big things out of the tandem of Darrell Foster and Tyler Blackburn. Cooper look to provide a support role at receiver.

Offensive Line

Only senior center Daniel Fraunfelder returns as a starter, but provides the rock on which the rest of the line will build off of. Juniors Ben Haskins, Rod Tyson and senior Jacob King look to battle in the trenches for the Hornets this fall. Sophomores Kevin Fine and Nathan Wood will also aim to gain playing time on the line.

Durability and stamina are going to be key for the Charger defensive line, as it is essentially the same as the offensive line. ou name it, the Evangel Christian Lightning won it in 2013. It was an absolute dream season, as the Lightning — stockpiled with a whopping 16 seniors— took home the Sky Bowl trophy over archrival Hope, captured the Alabama Christian Schools Conference and marched all the way to the NACA National Championship. The dream is over, however, and the Lightning know they have their work cut out for them. First-year head coach Don Murphy takes over a very young squad — the Lightning lost 13 of 16 total starters from last year to graduation — and will turn to a few battle-tested returners to lead the way. You never can count the Lightning out, but the ECS faithful know it’s a tough road to repeating as champs.

Quarterback

One of the few spots the Lightning won’t be overhauling for the 2014 season is at quarterback. Andrew Thompson returns, bringing with him a strong sense of leadership as a two-year starter. Last season, Thompson relied on seniors to help him gain experience. This year, Thompson will be the leader his younger teammates look up to. His — and the Lightning’s — success this year will depend on how well and quickly he and his teammates can gel early on. Micah Murphy, a ninth grader, will serve as backup to Thompson.

Running Back

Assisting Thompson in bringing the young squad up to speed will be senior running back Mason Murphy. While he’ll be replacing ACSC State Championship Game MVP Grant Webster, Mason Murphy proved to

be a spark plug on offense for the Lightning last year himself, and is no stranger to the endzone. He, along with Thompson, will have to be the leaders in the offensive skill positions for the Lightning in the fall. Bradley Baggett moves up from the junior varsity, and will serve as fullback.

Receivers

With so much of the receiving corps depleted due to graduation, the Lightning are still looking to fill out most of the positions on the end. One thing is certain, though, and that’s that Satcher Wells will be who the coaching staff builds around when it comes to giving Thompson weapons to throw the ball to. Wells is one of the many young players moving into a starting role, and looks to get experience early to help the Lightning through the season.

ASCS 8-Man 2013: 11-0 (2-0) Head Coach: Don Murphy (First year of varsity) Assistants: Jason Mann, Lance Byrd, Robert Reese Last region title: 2013 Last playoff game: 2013

Offensive Line

The Lightning have the benefit of having two-year starter Tyler Byrd returning to anchor the offensive line. Byrd, known for his defensive prowess, will be joined by Andrew Morris up front. The Lightning are still looking to fill the line around the duo, as a host of young players look to gain a starting role heading into the fall.

Defensive Line

While he’ll be playing offensive line, the D-line is where Byrd has shined. A starter at nose guard the last two seasons, Byrd will serve as the rock on which Evangel will build its line this season. He will be joined by Andrew Morris up front, as the Lightning look

to fall practice to decide who round out the rest of the defensive front.

their youthfulness, the Huskies boast a talented squad, and once the team finally gets settled in to a routine at their own facility — they’ve been sharing the field with the Helena Middle School squad as their practice field was being finished — the coaches will have a better chance to assess talent and

assign roles. While the success of the Huskies will depend on how well they gel early on, the team has a great deal of depth, and the potential to do some damage. While this year’s team has a lot of unknowns headed into the season, one thing’s for certain: This will be a team to watch for the next few years.

hat more can you say about the Lions’ 2013 season? It brought a record number of wins (9), points in a game (69) and the first playoff win in school history. Certainly, teams that faced the Lions last year had to pack their track shoes, as Kingwood’s high-octane offense had no problems scoring, and scoring often. This season, however, will be a rebuilding year. Graduation took a toll on the Lions, as the three key offensive leaders in Gavin Sumrall, C’Yontai Lewis and Montez Haynes — among

ometimes, a team just can’t catch a break. Such is the case with the Montevallo Bulldogs the last few seasons. Whether by injuries, bad bounces on the field or just being a young team in general, the Bulldogs struggled by way of the win-loss column in 2013, posting just one victory. That said, the Bulldogs were competitive in several games last year, only to succumb to a lack of depth from injuries. Things are looking up;

the community is getting behind the program, with upgrades to Theron Fisher Stadium coming in time for the new season, and Montevallo sports several playmakers on both sides of the ball. However, the Bulldogs catch yet another tough break heading into the 2014 season, as the AHSAA reclassification moves them up into 4A. Depth against larger opponents will once again be an issue for Montevallo this fall, and how healthy the Bulldogs stay will parallel their success. They

Quarterback

Sophomore Zac Oden returns after taking over the offense last season. Oden took his lumps his freshman year, and looks to use the experience gained to take charge of the offense. Oden

Oak Mountain Eagles

T

here’s a renewed sense of confidence for the Eagles heading into the 2014 season. Sure, Oak Mountain went 4-6 last season, but what the overall record doesn’t show is just how close the team was to knocking off some tough competition. The Eagles punched above their weight several times last year, but just seemed to catch bad breaks in games, notably against

Spain Park, Pelham and perennial power Prattville. The Eagles are returning several key playmakers on both sides of the ball, and the coaching staff is pleased with the growth of the program the last two years under head coach Cris Bell. While the climb to the top of the mountain just got tougher with the move to the new Class 7A — and demanding road games at Hoover, Spain Park and Thompson — there’s no reason to think that Oak Mountain

can’t contend for a playoff spot. It’ll take some work, but if the Eagles’ offense can get clicking on all cylinders early, Oak Mountain could quickly become a contender in the new “region of doom.”

Quarterback

The entire backfield returns, and with it quarterback Warren Shader. Shader wasn’t called on to put the ball in the air much last season, as the Eagles are an option-based team, but still managed to

toss for 398 yards and five touchdowns, averaging 12.8 yards per throw. On the ground however, Shader was tough to beat, running the option and gaining 747 yards for nine rushing touchdowns. According to Bell, some of the focus in the offseason was improving the passing game. Time will tell how much more the Eagles will throw the ball, but one thing’s for certain: whether on the ground or in the air, Shader will be taking the snaps for Oak Mountain.

and look to improve upon that this year. Gaines’ six touchdowns led the rushing corps in scoring, while Shader gained 591 yards in 2013. The two figure to give Oak Mountain a true triple-threat ground game, as the option of a keeper by Warren Shader, a pitch to Gaines, or a toss to Harold Shader provides a tough offense to defend.

Receivers

Reid Golson returns, and looks to lead a young group of receivers for the The Eagles have quite the one-two Eagles. he Panthers have an uphill battle of sorts heading into the 2014 season, as the recent split with the new Helena High took its toll on the depth Pelham has numberswise. The Panthers don’t have nearly the amount of players on roster as last year, but catch a break with the new classification system. While the Panthers will no longer play on the state’s highest level in terms of school size, they will be playing competition more comparable to them in terms of depth. It will take a little time to adjust to the resizing of the team — with some players having to play on both offense and defense — but head coach Brett Burnett and staff are spending extra time working on conditioning to make sure their players can handle the extra work. It’s going to be a period of adjustment, to be sure, but with noted playmakers Moregan Sharp and R.J. McCall still suiting up in the green and gold, the Panthers are still a threat to win. Time will tell, but if the team can mesh early, there’s a chance they can contend for a playoff spot.

Quarterback

With Devon Mines graduated, the Panthers turn to Logan Burnett to take over at quarterback. Logan Burnett, a junior, spent time in a backup role to Mines last season. While the Panthers stuck mostly to a run-oriented offense last year, Logan Burnett has a strong arm and playmaking abilities through the air, giving the Panthers the option to spread out the defense when necessary. Junior Chase Shearer will provide depth at the position.

Running Back

As stated, Sharp returns, which is a huge boost for Pelham. Not only

he landscape of Alabama high school football has been completely changed heading into the 2014 football season. With the addition of the 7A classification, nearly every team in the state has been shuffled in some way. Pelham High School was not immune to these changes, but if

one thing has become routine for them, it is having Brett Burnett at the helm. Burnett has been the head coach of the Pelham High School Panthers since 2005. He has had a winning season in five of his first nine seasons. He has also seen some hard times during his tenure. Through all the ups and downs he has formed a fondness for his city.

“Pelham is a really good community, a great place with a lot of good people,” said Burnett. “From a family standpoint, it has been a great place to be.

“In terms of football, we’ve had our ups and downs, we’ve played some good games. There have been a lot of good kids that have come through here.” In nine years a lot can change.

Pelham has gotten a facelift on most of its athletic facilities since Burnett started. He said he is grateful for the progress that the school has made in its facilities.

“We have had all the stadium upgrades because of generous donations from our parents and the city of Pelham,” said Burnett. “We resurfaced our track, got a new turf

field, installed chair back seating and new lighting is going up currently.” However, the change he has seen during his time at the school hasn’t only been physical. He has had an impact on helping players and coaches accomplish their dreams. “There have been several kids that have gone on and played on the next level for us and we have had coaches move on to good coaching opportunities elsewhere,” said Burnett. “It’s been exciting to see all the progress that has been made.” Even though a lot has changed, Burnett hopes some things will stay the same. The city of Helena will be kicking off the start of their football program this year. However, letting the current rivalry with Thompson go would be a huge disappointment to him, he said. “The next two years we are playing Thompson for sure and it has been a rivalry every year since I started here,” said Burnett. “It’s something we (the coaches) look forward to, the kids look forward to and the community looks

forward to every year.” Just because he is entering his 10th year as head coach, Burnett is not done making goals for himself and his team. He plans to bring the program to a place it has never been, winning a state championship. “We certainly want to win a state championship and we’ve got work to do in that area,” said Burnett. “We want to be a top program in the state and we are battling, scratching and clawing trying to get there.” Despite his determination to win, he doesn’t lose track of the other reasons he is a head coach at a high school. The impact that he can make goes far beyond the results on the gridiron. “We want to accomplish great things on the field, but mainly we want to develop young men,” said Burnett. “We want to develop men that can be better citizens, great husbands and great fathers one day.” Coach Burnett will kick off his 10th season as his Pelham Panthers take on their rival Thompson Warriors on Friday, Aug. 29.

It’s been a rough go over the last few years for the Columbiana crowd. Backto-back one-win seasons don’t tend to create many smiles, and definitely not when it comes to programs with a history of winning like Shelby County’s. That said, there’s a new hope for the Wildcats in their 100th season of play. Long-time assistant coach Heath Childers steps into the head coaching role vacated when former head coach Brent Smith and the school parted ways before spring workouts. Childers

is a mainstay of the program, having served under former head coach Ryan Herring during one of most successful runs in school history, and looks to revert to those winning ways. Childers knows it’s going to be tough, but with an extra focus on defense and a new runbased offense, plans to streamline and simplify the playcalling should help the Wildcats this fall. The schedule’s not an easy one — with Central Clay and Tallassee in successive weeks — and success won’t come overnight, but the

Wildcats have the potential to lay a solid foundation for the future if they can come together as a unit early on in the season.

Quarterback

Gone is Ty Proctor, a four-year starter at quarterback for the Wildcats. With his graduation, sophomore Mason Blythe will take over the reins of the offense. Also gone is the spread offense, and in its place comes a more grindit-out running style. It means Blythe

t’s a new frontier for the Warriors heading into the 2014 season, as the squad makes the move up to the brand-new AHSAA Class 7A. Last season was a case of peaks and valleys, as the Warriors opened with three-straight wins and dominated rival Pelham, snapping a long losing streak and looking poised to make a return to the playoffs. The road just got tougher for the Warriors, as they have arguably the most grueling opening stretch in 7A with four-straight road games against Wetumpka, Pelham, Spain Park and Mountain Brook before returning home to take on Hoover. Head coach Mike Montgomery enters his third year with the program, and is trying to create a culture of success. If the Warriors can break through,

knock off a couple of the 7A big dogs, and find a way into the playoffs, he may have it. Time will tell, as this Warrior squad will certainly be forged by fire.

The Jackets must replace a four-year starter in Chris Kelley, as well as veteran leadership in Bryce O’Steen and Jay Hamilton. Now the Jackets turn to seniors Chris Ayala and Anthony Roberson to anchor the line, as well as juniors Cody Pate and Cole Holston. Sophomore Zeb McCord and eight grader Robbie Albright will provide depth.

Defensive Line

Ayala and Roberson will go both ways for the Jackets, splitting time between the offensive and defensive lines. Juniors Jordan Smith and Dontrell Calhoun will join them on the defensive front, as will senior Aubrey Clarke.
