GRADUATION 2021
TO THE CLASS OF 2021
CONTENTS 4: Briarwood Christian School 6: Calera High School 8: Chelsea High School 11: Coosa Valley Academy 12: Cornerstone Christian School 14: Evangel Christian School
This school year brought a renewed sense of hope for many. After COVID-19 put a damper on the end of the 2019-2020 school year, canceling senior activities and postponing graduations, this year brought a refreshing start. Seniors returned to school in August ready to make the most of their final year, knowing it could all be ripped away from them at any given moment. From the instant seniors across Shelby County stepped back into the hallways this year, they had a renewed respect for school. What was once a nuisance was now a highlight of each day. They were reunited with friends, studying was all of a sudden more fun, being in class more entertaining and participating in extracurricular activities a blessing. Nobody took for granted the 2020-2021 school year, but especially the seniors who just wanted to enjoy one last ride with their classmates. Now, we can officially say—they made it! Congratulations Class of 2021. From your junior year ending early to starting this year socially distanced and masked with strict guidelines in the classroom, you persevered and are now set to conquer whatever you put your mind to. In a historic time, some of you did it remotely and some of you did it in person, but you all accomplished the same goal. For that, we wanted to honor and celebrate you, which we do throughout this year’s special graduation magazine. Included in this year’s magazine are each school’s graduating students, each school’s valedictorians, letters from administrators to the seniors, senior spotlights on some of the top academic and high-character students and much more. Now, as this year’s senior class prepares to enter the next phase of life, don’t forget the many life lessons you have learned from your teachers, administrators and parents. Continue to work hard and try to make a difference in the world and you’ll go amazing places.

GRADUATION 2021
Guard the good deposit entrusted to you!” (I Timothy 1:6-14) Here are the key points of application I urge you to consider and pursue. Your freshman year in college is tough BUT you got this IF you stay properly grounded! What Paul shared with young Timothy will serve you very well if you heed it! 1. “Guard the good deposit entrusted to you” - You have had people pour this good deposit (God’s word - to salvation) into your life. Great defense is required - do not surrender what the Lord, your family, youth pastors and teachers have poured into you

for the past 18 plus years. Guard it with your life! “Fight, and after you have done everything - STAND!” Eph. 6:13 2. “Fan the flame that is in you” - This is simple in concept but takes discipline in college. GROW in your walk with the Lord. Burn brightly for all to see! 3. “You have not been given a spirit of fear but power, love and self-control.” - If you are going to do #2, you will need to do it in the power and strength of the Lord! God’s power, Jesus’ love, and
self-control from the Holy Spirit will cause you to thrive! 4. “Do not be ashamed but share in the suffering for the gospel.” If your fire burns brightly, people WILL notice and you WILL be challenged. You should expect some type of push back. Don’t be surprised consider it an honor to share in this...don’t give in but lean into it! 5. “He is able to guard...this good deposit.” Best news yet: you are not on your own. HE (God) is where you are and
will be. HE will guard what HE has entrusted or gave to you! HE goes with you wherever you go and HE will fight for you! You do NOT go to college alone! Know we are excited for you and will regularly be praying for you! Also, know you are loved and missed, that you will always be a Briarwood lion and don’t ever forget the way back to your Briarwood family - see you at Homecoming 2021! In the love of Christ,

Chelsea High School
Dear 2021 Graduates, First of all, I want to congratulate each of you for successfully navigating your school career through elementary, middle, and high school. Receiving a diploma is truly a monumental achievement that encompasses a broad spectrum of experiences that ultimately help prepare you for life’s journey. I hope that you are able to think positively on your participation at Chelsea High School, and remember your experiences fondly as you reflect on your accomplishments and relationships that enhanced your time here. As I’ve thought about our graduating class, three words come to mind: resiliency, hope, and action. You have all been nothing if not resilient. Distancing, masks, isolations, quarantines, and different forms of learning have been hallmarks of the past year. Disappointments and limitations regarding normally held events have been considerable adjustments for you to ac-

cept and overcome. Tragically, many of us have even experienced sickness and even grief as a result of our worldwide health crisis. Through it all, however, you have been resilient, and consequently, have learned the valuable lesson of maintaining hope. In many respects, hope has been the catalyst that has helped us move through the past year. I have seen personally the feelings of disappointment that have been negated through the hope that we can work together and make the best of a difficult situation. It is through this lens of hope that I have seen great accomplishments, both major in scope, or even in small ways such as seeing smiling eyes on top of the masks you’ve been required to wear. Your navigation through this year is truly a testament to your ability to vanquish tremendous obstacles. It hasn’t always been easy, but your sacrifice along with the will to make things better will carry you through many of life’s challenges. Finally, the fun part, and the ultimate result of all of this is your action in moving
forward. Now is your chance to take what you’ve learned and make a valuable contribution to the lives of those around you and beyond. I am always excited for graduates because you are entering a stage of life in which you further develop your values and personal standards, and make your mark on the world. Each of you have goals and dreams, and they are all in front of you for the taking. Plan, embrace them, and commit the action necessary to see them through. I look forward to learning the wonderful things each of you has the ability to accomplish in your future. Thank you for everything this year. It has truly been a joy and privilege to be your principal. I wish you the greatest of success in all facets of your life, and I will be praying for each of you as you continue your journey. Godspeed!

Dear Class of 2021, Well, you made it! After years of homework, tests, and projects, your hard work has paid off. In addition to gaining an education, you also created memories of football games, school plays, and dances with your friends. These memories belong to you for a lifetime. Everyone’s high school experiences are very similar. Classes and school activities have not changed much. You and your parents have had similar educational experiences; however, you have a tale to tell that is unlike anything that your parents lived: You survived Covid! You are living history! washing have been all the rage your senior year. Online lessons and digital tools seem to have dominated your school experience since the end of your junior year. It has been tough, but you were tougher than the times in which you lived, and you are graduating victorious! In spite of the protocols, remember that you were still able to hold onto some traditions. You still had a senior retreat, although it was different from those in the past. You still had a Homecoming week, even though it was scaled back. You still had a prom, with testing required for dates, but still, a prom! To finish your education, you had to Zoom and Kahoot! and do online classes, but you persevered, and soon, you will receive that diploma, turn your tassel, and walk out of the door ready to start your lives.

Hannah Adams Evangel Christian School senior Hannah Adams is passionate about service and encouraging the dreams of others. When Adams was five and a half-years-old, she was diagnosed with Stage 3 Nephroblastoma. After radiation, chemotherapy, and surgery, she was declared cancer-free 11 years ago. During her time in high school, Adams has serves as an ambassador for global non-profit pediatric cancer organizations such as Hyundai Motor America Hope On Wheels and American Cancer Society’s Gold Together for Childhood Cancer, spoken at 40 hospitals in 25 states, helped raised more than $30 million for pediatric cancer research, and connected with thousands of brave pediatric cancer fights. Adams and her family founded their 501c3 non-profit H.U.G.S. (Helping U Get Stronger) 4 Childhood Cancer, which focuses on legislative and community awareness as
well as family support. “While lobbying on Capitol Hill for increased pediatric cancer research funding and helping pass legislation, I saw the positive impact politics can make,” Adams said. “As an intern on a successful U.S. Senate campaign, I further grew my knowledge of politics, saw bipartisanship at its best, and learned how to cultivate a successful political campaign. This inspired my pursuit of working in politics.” While living in Florida in 2019, Adams won Miss Florida’s Outstanding Teen within the Miss America Organization and has accomplished over 200 appearances at various events. At the national competition, Adams received the overall Community Service Award for her dedication to pediatric cancer advocacy. Some of Adams’ favorite memories from her time at Evangel include cheering on the Evangel football team on Friday nights with her friends. “I was inducted into the
dual enrollment American History course because she was able to learn how the past impacts the present and future, the foundational beliefs America was built on, and what being a successful leader looks like. GRADUATION 2021
Evangel Classical Christian School
Robin Mack Evangel Christian Classical School senior Robin Mack knows that working and studying hard are key to helping prepare for college. “It can be challenging and stressful, but in the end you will be thankful for all of your experiences, and it will help prepare you for college,” Mack said. Some of Mack’s highlights during high school included a mission trip to Belize, being in the Beta Club, writing and presenting a thesis on superheroes, and being on the honor roll for all four years at Evangel Christian Classical School. One of Mack’s favorite subjects is math because it has always come easy to her, and she finds it satisfying to figure out an exact answer to a math prob-
lem. While the Covid-19 pandemic provided many challenges for most seniors during the 20202021 school year, Mack said she experienced online school March through May. “It was a tough, stressful adjustment,” Mack said. “It was very isolating. But, since August my school has been completely in-person which I am very thankful for because it has been way better than online school.” Some of Mack’s favorite moments from Evangel during her time in high school included going on field trips to Sifat, the Birmingham Art Museum and the George Washington Museum. “I learned a lot of very interesting things, and also grew closer with my class through
these field trips,” Mack said. “Our school also has house games where grades sixth through twelfth are split up into different houses and compete in different sports. During these, I was able to make friends outside of my grade, and I enjoyed getting a fun break from school work.” Mack said she will miss the great friendships she has made and the many teachers that care about each student at her school. One memory she will take with her is the year and a half process of working on her senior thesis paper and presentation. “This helped me to be a way better writer and speaker that will help me in life,” Mack said.
Future plans include attending UAB where she will major in business management. After college she plans to find a job in supply chain management. Mack is the daughter of Teri Lord and Jonathan Mack and the brother of Samuel Mack.

Helena High School
Dear Helena High Seniors,
with teachers and peers. You have become more aware of and concerned for the needs of others, even when you were asked to sacrifice your own needs. In a time that has been somewhat isolating, you have learned the importance of relationships with others and have learned to find joy in small things, celebrating whenever something felt “normal.” I am proud of how you have handled these unprecedented times with grace, determination, and at times, a little humor. No, we cannot replace the many things you lost, but you can trust that what you learned will benefit you for the rest of your life. I promise you that brighter days are ahead. Soon, you will embark on the next phase in your lives, and it will be full of so many new people and events to cherish. I am so proud of you and eagerly await all the wonderful things you will accomplish in the future. Wishing you all the best!
From the moment you entered as a freshman, you’ve eagerly anticipated your senior year. What once seemed like it would never arrive is almost over, and you have each worked hard to reach this important milestone. Graduation, the finish line, is in sight. I understand that your senior year may not have been all you had expected it to be. Many of the things you looked forward to had to be adjusted, and even canceled, due to the ongoing health crisis. I share your sadness over the many things you lost this year; however, rather than highlighting what was lost, I want to point out what I believe you gained. You have grown in so many ways; there have been many life lessons learned. This year has been challenging and continually evolving. However, you have learned to be strong and to adjust. You have learned to navigate various online platforms in order to continue with your learning. You have demonstrated perseverance and developed resilience. You have stayed the course when you or one of your classmates had to quarantine, and through this, you learned the importance of effective communication Principal, Helena High School

Hope Christian School
Brianna Buchina While it is difficult for Hope Christian School senior Brianna Buchina to recall one favorite memory from high school, she has many favorite memories she will carry with her. “There is absolutely no way I can single out just one memory,” Buchina said. “There are just so many incredible things I did throughout those four years that I simply can not place a single one. All the people, all the trips, all the events-everything. Well, maybe not the homework. The nostalgia of my entire school journey will be with me for life.” During her time in school, Buchina was an officer in BETA club, 4-H Club, Student Government Association, Christian Honors Society, and served as the senior class’ vice-president. She also won several awards in the 4-H competitive events ranging up to regionals,
and BETA state convention. Buchina said some of her favorite moments while involved at Hope were all of the different clubs she was able to attend, especially the ability to go to the BETA convention. Some of her favorite subjects include biology, English and art. “They are pretty much equal in rank, but I will have to go with biology as my favorite,” Buchina said. “The experiments and dissections made me realize how much I loved deconstructing things. That, paired with the crime shows I watch, helped me discover my want to become a forensic pathologist.” Covid-19 provided different challenges for Buchina who describes herself as very
social. “Last year was quite difficult for me, as I couldn’t see my friends and everyone was still struggling with things like Zoom and GroupMe,” Buchina said. “Not being able to see anyone in person was a real punch in the gut. Not to mention all of the events I was supposed to attend were cancelled that hurt too. Things are starting to get back to normal now, and it is getting easier.” Buchina plans to attend the University of South Alabama and work toward becoming a forensic pathologist. She is the daughter of Michael and Michele Buchina and the sister of Kirsten Buchina.

Indian Springs School
Dear Class of 2020,
all going through this together. I know you will survive this. I know you will learn important lessons from this experience. I know you will thrive in the coming years. But I do have one concern, and that is that the final weeks of your senior year may, in your minds, overshadow what you accomplished and contributed to the life and work of Indian Springs School in the time leading up to the onset of the virus. There is an old saying in the independent school world that as the year goes for the senior class, so it goes for the whole school. That is because the leadership of the senior class sets the tone for the entire school. This has been a great year for Indian Springs School, and the leadership of the Class of 2020 has everything to do with that success. Hard work, intellectual curiosity, strong moral leadership, commitment to the School and the School’s values, healthy ambition—these and others are what you have provided the Indian Springs School community this year. And we have all benefitted from those qualities. All of us here are proud of you. We salute you, we thank you, and we hope that as you reflect on your experience at Indian Springs School this year, you will remember all the good that you have contributed to the School. With respect and gratitude,
You are no doubt familiar with the story of the religious woman who felt pressed by several urgencies in her life and prayed the following: “Lord, give me patience, please. And give it to me right now.” This woman, like most of us perhaps, had long known the value of patience but had always thought it was a skill or mindset she could develop later. And then she found herself needing patience, immediately. You may have made the same prayer in the last few weeks. The spread of COVID-19 has been rapid and virulent, but what it has wrought in your lives has been a dramatic slowdown, a radically different way of learning, and some significant losses. Patience has been required. So too resilience. Creativity, as you have adjusted to a different way of learning and have found new ways of maintaining contact with your friends and extended family, which is essential to the human soul. Those new skills will hold you in good stead in the future, for this will not be the only time in your life when they will be required of you. What you are experiencing now, what the world is experiencing now, is historic. In her column in the April 18 weekend edition of the Wall Street Journal, columnist Peggy Noonan wrote this line: “History doesn’t get any bigger than this.” Recognizing this context for what your life is like now may provide scarce solace, but there is truth to the sometimes glibly offered statement that we are Interim Head of School, Indian Springs

GRADUATION 2021
Montevallo High School
Letter to the Seniors, First, I want to thank each one of you for a fantastic school year. You have shown tremendous grit and perseverance throughout this pandemic. Though life has not been easy, I pray you will look back at these moments to find uplifting chronicles among the onerous stages of your lives. Many of you will soon transition into college or military, while others will shift into the workforce. As you take those next steps, it is important not to forget the people who assisted and/or encouraged you
to this point. Trust me when I say, an attitude of gratitude and an essence of humility will take you farther in life than any certification, degree, or career. As Alfred Whitehead stated, “ No one who achieves success does so without the help of others. The wise and confident acknowledge this help with gratitude.” So as you pass through the halls of Montevallo High School one last time, I hope you take the time to reflect on the lessons learned from this historical and enchanting place. Roshni Datta For Oak Mountain High School senior Roshni Datta, chemistry was a challenging course to take in high school, but also the most engaging. “I enjoyed applying the concepts I learned in class to everyday occurrences to learn more about my surroundings and the functions in the human body,” Datta said. Datta was a National Merit Scholar, received the Girl Scouts Gold Award, was the outstanding student in eight classes for 9-11th grades, received first place at Shelby County math competition, was the AP scholar with distinction, and the vice president of the Beta Club. A favorite moment of her time at Oak Mountain was getting to dress up and walk through the different-themed hallways during homecoming week. “This was always a fun way to relax and bond with friends,” Datta said. “I also loved the mornings before school that I spent in my chemistry and math

Dear Class of 2021, What do you say to the graduates of one of the most challenging years in history? As I began writing this letter to you, the Class of 2021, I hesitated discussing the subject of the pandemic, but there’s really no avoiding the topic that has changed so many aspects of our lives throughout the last several months. Honestly, the 2020-2021 school year has been quite a blur. The chaos began with an abrupt ending of normal school in March 2020 and then moved quickly into complete uncertainty in August of that same year. I often likened our situation to a challenging sports analogy that required a combination of game time decision making for necessary adjustments without any wisdom of a previous game film. Dear SCHS Class of 2021, I am filled with mixed emotions as I write this principal’s farewell address to you. As you embark upon the last few days with one another, I am saddened that our daily interactions have come to an end. Over the past week, I have spent considerable time thinking about your experiences at SCHS and your future endeavors. I am hopeful for what your contributions of leadership, hard work and dedication will bring to our communities. I am inspired by the opportunities and successes that lie before you and I am thankful for those you have left as your legacy in our halls and in our hearts. While I will miss you, I am so incredibly proud of and excited for you. As you look at your future beyond high school, you ought to be anticipating the impact you will be able to make and lives you are about to touch. Whether your path will take you to the military, college, a technical school, or into the workforce, you will make a difference. While in high school, the Class of 2021 experienced a global pandemic, a contentious presidential election, the destruction caused by Hurricane Zeta and two tornadoes that ripped through Shelby County. Your resilience has been seen in every situation. Through your experiences and efforts, you are ready for life

Michael Button For Thompson High School student Michael Button, senior year included a few hurdles he had not necessarily planned. Button suffered a stroke on Thanksgiving Day, leaving the student in a medically induced coma for five weeks and in the hospital for three months, before he was allowed to return home. Button had to have a portion of his skull removed to allow room for his brain to swell, resulting in him losing all movement on his left side. “I resumed classes online in February and will graduate with my class this year,” Button said. “The portion of my skull that was removed has now been replaced and I have therapy two days per week. I am proud to say that I survived and with a lot of therapy, my left side is coming back. I am now able to walk short distances with support, and my goal is to walk the stage at graduation.” Button’s stroke was triggered by an issue that had gone undetected throughout his life called arteriovenous malforma54

tion (AVM), which is an abnormal connection between arteries and veins in the brain. Button said his favorite subject in school is math because he is really good at it.
During his time in school, Button joined the Beta Club, obtained certifications in Microsoft Word, Access and PowerPoint, and maintained a 3.2 GPA his senior year. One of his favorite moments at Thompson High School was winning the state championship game in 2019, which he said he had a “blast at.” Button said the one thing he will miss about high school are his friends, and the best piece of advice he has received is to believe in himself. “If I believe it, it can be,” Button said. During his time in high school, Button said some of his favorite memories include going to the courts to play basketball with his friends and getting his first car. After graduation, Button plans to attend the University of Alabama. Button is the son of Josh and Honie Jo Hendrix; siblings Alivia Button, Dillion Terry and Alexia Hendrix and his nana, Cathy Smith.

Vincent High School
To the Class of 2021, First, let me say congratulations to each and every one of you! You have all worked hard and diligently to get to this point, and the highest congratulations are in order. Although this year has not been short on hardships and difficulties, I have been so impressed with the way you, both individually and collectively, have persevered and pushed through. Although I haven’t had the privilege of serving as your principal for very long, I have seen such growth and maturity from the class of 2021. Your ability to identify what you want and work together to achieve that is unmatched. As you all go on to accomplish great things, my greatest wish is that you will take everything you have learned here with you. Your greatest lessons may have been learned in a classroom, on a field or court, in a hallway, during a conversation with a teacher, or with a friend or classmate. Regardless, I hope that you are able to take those lessons and apply them in ways that continue to

shape you into wise, thoughtful, knowledgeable, and kind adults who are able to turn around and give back to their community. Go out and show the world what it means to be a Vincent Yellow Jacket. I am so very proud to have known each of you. Go Yellow Jackets!
Lauren Yancey Principal, Vincent High School
Olkaris Marandu Olkaris Marandu has spent a great deal of the last year considering how he can give back to his community. The idea of leaving a “legacy” for his school and classmates is something that he has considered often over the last four years. It wasn’t until last summer in the midst of a global pandemic and political and social tension that his idea began to seriously take root. Marandu became determined to find something positive for himself, his classmates, his school and his community to put their focus toward. At the beginning of his senior school year, Marandu started researching and investigating projects that would accomplish this need for bringing his community together and celebrating his school at the same time. After speaking with administrators, working with the SGA and collaborating with Vincent’s Mayor Jim Latimer, Marandu created what he’s calling the Vincent Legacy Project. His hope is that each year students will identify ways to give back to all of the sur58

rounding communities that feed into Vincent High School and work to leave the school better than they found it. The inaugural project for the Vincent Legacy Project is for Marandu and all of his classmates to raise money through fundraisers and donations to purchase
street-light banners for the city of Vincent which will celebrate “The Home of the Yellow Jackets.” He recently presented this idea to the Vincent City Council for their approval. Although Marandu is a senior, his desire is to leave something behind for all future Yellow Jackets. He wants his current classmates and all students at Vincent High School to look for ways to work together and support their school and their communities. Marandu’s legacy will be his faithful and genuine effort to unite his school. If you would like to support the Vincent Legacy Project, please contact Vincent Middle High School. Marandu also finished third in the Class of 2021 at Vincent as one of the school’s top academic students. In addition to that, he was nominated for the Carter G. Woodson Legacy Scholarship Award from Berea College and won, which gives him $8,000 per year for four years of college and a no-tuition promise.

sation, as words possess the power to comfort, encourage, and enlighten. It is here that the communal and connecting character of the class of 2021 shows. Through these conversations we have observed their love for one another and their neighbor. They participate in celebrations of each other’s accomplishments, the grieving of each other’s losses, and the bearing of each other’s burdens. Our seniors have been exemplary servant-leaders. Of the class of 2021, we can confidently say they are leaving Westminster a stronger community. In addition to these accolades, we are proud to announce that the 2021 Westminster School Valedictorian is Luke Eller, and the Salutatorian is Bennett Steenwyk. Congratulations seniors on a job well done!
The Lord has accomplished great things in Westminster’s class of 2021. Over half of the senior class has held leadership positions. Two-thirds of the class have lettered in two or more varsity sports. Almost a third of the class demonstrated skills in fine arts, specifically theatre, music, and the visual arts. The class average for the ACT is a 30 and our seniors will be representing Westminster at over twelve different colleges and universities, demonstrating the academic prowess of the class. Beyond these outward indicators there is much more to this class. One of the hallmarks of this class is their unity. In the classrooms, in the hallways, at lunch, in athletic arenas, and during fine art performances, this class supports one another with passion and energy. These seniors engage in the Westminster experience, supporting the best of their school and contributing to the development Head of Upper School of younger students.
