Age Gap What do a high school beauty queen and nearly 80-year-old retiree have in common? As you’ll read in this issue, quite a bit, actually. Hoover High School’s Katelyn Richard was crowned Miss Jefferson County’s Outstanding Teen 2016 this past summer — but that’s not even the most impressive thing about this young woman. Coming from a single-parent, low-income home, Richard works two jobs, is a varsity cheerleader, plays on the Lady Bucs softball team, excels in school and motivates everyone she meets. When I talked with her, she told me she wanted to make the county proud. After you read more about her on page 24, I think you’ll agree that she’s definitely done that. Just as motivating is King Kindred, who has worked for the same car dealership for 60 years. In a society where working six decades is almost unheard of, it’s even more unique for someone to spend that time with the same company.

Kindred, who works at Hendrick Hoover Auto Mall, celebrated the milestone with friends, family, coworkers and other community members. But for someone who has impacted so many people, that wasn’t enough: He also received a new truck from the dealership. It doesn’t get much better than that. Read more about Kindred on page 8. There may be six decades separating Richard and Kindred, but both of them have an evident drive and passion for what they do. There are also several other interesting people featured in this issue. You can read about a woman who gave her home a retro renovation, one resident who brought comics back to Hoover, a chef who puts a culinary twist on southern dishes and a complete Moss Rock Festival guide. Know of a person or business we should feature in the magazine? Let me know! We are always looking for

great people and places to highlight. n

Hendrick Hoover employee celebrates 60th work anniversary with a special gift WRITTEN AND PHOTOS BY LAUREN DOWDLE

hen most people retire, they get a nice meal, cake or some sort of commemorative plaque to thank them for all they’ve done. But for one man who has helped so many people — and cars — around Hoover, those gifts wouldn’t be enough. King Kindred celebrated his 60th anniversary with Hendrick Hoover Auto Mall on Sept. 23 by receiving a 2015 Chevrolet Colorado. Just as unique as Kindred and his milestone was the gift: The dealership doesn’t normally give out trucks. But, that didn’t deter Kindred from asking for it. “Mr. Hendrick was here about a year and a half ago, and I told him I would be here 60 years this year. He said he didn’t know what they would get me for my 60th anniversary, and I said, ‘What 8

about a truck?’” Kindred recalls with a smile. “Mr. Hendrick turned around for a second and then agreed.” Kindred handpicked the blue Colorado truck and said it would be “well driven, well driven.” But before getting in his new truck, Kindred enjoyed hearing from co-workers, managers, family members and his pastor during the retirement celebration. “He’s the type of guy you want to have on your team,” says Joel Smith, executive general manager of Hendrick Hoover Auto Mall. He also received letters and gifts from Gov. Robert Bentley and Mayor Gary Ivey and shared his gratitude. “I want to thank everyone, not just for coming to see me, but to see the 60 years I put into this place,” says Kindred, who is almost 80. “I’m grateful for you letting me work here.”

In a time where just working for six decades is rare, having someone who has spent all of that time in one place is even more special. The year Kindred started working for the dealership, Winston Churchill resigned as prime minister, the Civil Rights Movement began, the polio vaccine was declared safe and Disneyland opened in California. Kindred says he remembers that year well and even the exact date he started working in the automotive industry. “It was Sept.

1, 1955,” he recalls. “It was a Thursday.” Kindred, a Union Springs native, started off washing cars for the Don Drennen family of dealerships, which were later sold to Hendrick in 2011, and was promoted into the dealership’s service department in 1963 where he prepared cars for buyers. Since then, he’s worked in the paint shop, carried out dealer transfers and driven wrecker trucks. But it wasn’t until his promotion to new car service

CLOCKWISE FROM LEFT: Kindred picked the color and features for his new truck. His family, friends, co-workers, church members and city officials all came out to celebrate Kindred’s milestone. In addition to his work anniversary, Kindred and his wife Willie Nell also celebrated their wedding anniversary in September.

manager that moved him from the Ensley location to Hendrick Hoover Auto Mall where he works today. Now, Kindred is putting a close to his 60 of service — maybe. He says he plans to work the rest of the year, but when asked if he would really retire after that, he just says, “I don’t know.” When he actually gets around to retiring, he’ll have more time to spend with his family, who were at the celebration. He recently celebrated his 44th anniversary with is wife, Willie Nell, and the couple has six children, eight grandchildren and three greatgrandchildren. It’s clear everyone at the dealership will miss Kindred’s dedication, work ethic, charming personality and humor when he finally does decide to hang up his hat. For others looking to have the type of longlasting career he’s enjoyed, he offers this simple advice: “If you put your heart into it and do what you’re supposed to do, you’ll do great.” n LEFT: Kindred said he would put his new truck to good use.

Thanks to our $9 million investment, he’s breathing a little easier. Our recently completed $9 million upgrade to our North Shelby Water Resource Reclamation Facility has dramatically reduced the amount of phosphorus in the clean water we return to the Cahaba River. That means we haven’t just met or surpassed all state and federal health standards. We’ve also helped lower the likelihood of algal blooms, which rob wildlife of life-giving oxygen in the water.

And that’s just one of the ways we’re working to make ours a better, healthier community, along with supporting organizations like Big Brothers Big Sisters of Shelby County, and SafeHouse of Shelby County, among many others. Our pledge to you: we’ll keep working for a healthier river, and a healthier community. Which means we can all breathe a little easier.

Katelyn Richard’s beauty, talent and drive shine through on stage

WRITTEN BY LAUREN DOWDLE PHOTOS BY DAVID MCELROY

nderneath the crown and sash is a young woman who has overcome the odds to inspire people in Hoover and beyond with her mission and hard work. And she hopes to use her new title and platform to help her on that journey. Sixteen-year-old Katelyn Richard won Miss Jefferson County’s Outstanding Teen 2016 in August at Hoover High School. “It’s a huge blessing and an honor,” Richard says. “Being able to represent my home county was amazing.” She’s been participating in the pageant since she was 12 and has placed every year. But, it wasn’t until this year that she took home the title. The pageant contestants were 24

judged on their talent, private interview, evening gown, onstage question and physical fitness. For her talent, Richard performed a power tumbling routine to Aloe Blacc’s “Can You Do This?” Richard — now a Hoover High School junior — had won the talent portion for her power tumbling before when she was 12, but this year would be much more challenging. She had just recovered from tearing her ACL and MCL in January. “It was nerve wracking to not feel like myself,” she recalls. But the injury didn’t slow her down. And this drive and determination to get through adversity isn’t just evident on the pageant stage — it’s something people can see from her every day. The biggest obstacle she’s

overcome has been coming from a lowincome, single-parent household, but she says that hasn’t held her back at all. “My family is amazingly strong and supportive, and they make sacrifices for me every day to give me all of the opportunities in the world.” She has a strong bond with her mother, Misty Tipler, and is grateful for everything she’s given her. “She is the most kind and genuine child a mother could have,” Tipler says. When Richard isn’t working at one of her two jobs, she cheers with the varsity squad, plays on the Lady Bucs softball team and participates in several clubs. She’s also involved with spreading the word about The Birmingham Pledge and teaching tolerance, something that’s very important to her. Her pageant platform and passion, One Race Human, is focused on race generalization. It’s dedicated to the improvement of human relations by addressing discrimination in all forms, including discrimination based on race, ethnicity, gender, religion, age, disability and sexual orientation. “I wanted to find a way to make a difference

in the world,” she says. “It requires people to make lifestyle and mindset changes.” Now as Miss Jefferson County’s Outstanding Teen, Richard is looking for more ways to expand her platform and make a difference in the life of even more people. She talks about her platform around the city, going to other schools and even the Birmingham

City Council. “The community gives back to me so much, and it’s been great to be able to give back to the community,” she says. But even before winning the pageant, she was catching national attention because of her efforts. Richard wrote President Obama asking him to sign The Birmingham Pledge after he left office, and he responded by sending her a package with photos of his family and a letter encouraging her to continue doing what she’s doing. Helping others is also what she plans to continue to do after graduating. She says she’d like to attend Vanderbilt and become a human rights attorney. Until then, she wants to represent Hoover and the rest of the county as best as she can as Miss Jefferson County’s Outstanding Teen 2016 — and she’s already off to a great start. “I’m very genuine, humble and a hard worker, and I hope to make Jefferson County and the community as proud as I can throughout the year,” she says. “I’m here for them, and I’ll do the best I can to represent them.” n

o say Ken Oswald has been into comics and games his whole life is a bit of an understatement. He started collecting comics in second grade and wrote his first board game by the time he was in third grade. “I’ve pretty much been into comics and games from the time I could walk,” Oswald says. On most days, Oswald can be found at Excelsior Comics in Hoover on Lorna Road helping customers or striking up conversations about the latest comics or the going price for collectable “Magic the Gathering” sets on eBay. “For me, these things aren’t just escapisms. They are a means of tapping into the human psyche,” Oswald says. “A good comic, like any good story, contains the seeds of our morality and ethics, our views of right and wrong, as well as what we fear and hope for.” Hoover had some great comic and game stores in the 1990s, Oswald says, but by the late 2000s, they were scarce around the Birmingham metro area. And after the Hoover location of Lion and Unicorn closed, comic readers were without a place to “hang.” That is when the father of two saw an opportunity to bring his passion for comics and the world of gaming back to Hoover. “My daughter had gone off to college, and my son was in high school, so I was looking for something to do,” he says. “The timing seemed really good.” So on Dec. 7, 2011, Oswald opened Excelsior Comics. “I put Excelsior together with the goal of being a community-oriented small business,” he says. “It was made to be a place to hang out, play games and give customers the specialized geek products that had been difficult to find elsewhere.” But most of all, Oswald says he wanted his shop to be the kind of place he himself, as a geek, would have wanted to spend time: “Geekdom is a culture, and it lives and breathes in Excelsior.” After nearly four years, the specialty store sees more traffic than when it first opened. With Marvel rolling out all of the phases of its movies, the popularity of TV shows like “Arrow” and “The Flash” and podcasts like Will Wheaton’s “Table Top,” Oswald says he has seen an increase of interest in comics and gaming and a whole new generation ready to dive deep into graphic novels. “Superheroes are more a part of our pop-cultural mainstream than ever before,” he adds. “As a result, it’s

much easier to introduce people to our products and help them find something they will be interested in.” Excelsior carries a wide range of games, accessories and collectables, but the most popular products sold at Excelsior, Oswald says, are the comic books themselves. The diversity of subjects attracting an audience outside the typical “superhero” fans include science fiction, fantasy, drama, comedy, cartoon, horror and so on. You name it, there’s probably a comic for it — but superhero comics still rule the day, he adds. Marvel’s latest series, “Secret Wars,” currently is their biggest seller. “Comics are consumed with ravenous vigor these days. They are probably closer to the mainstream zeitgeist than they have ever been,” Oswald says. At Excelsior, comics start at an average price of about $3.50. Oswald also attributes a change in demographics to 30

the growing popularity of the comic and gaming industry. “The most obvious is, of course, the growth of female customers. Take the game Dungeons & Dragons. When I was growing up, our D&D games were all guys. Today at Excelsior, we have society play nights for D&D where half the group is female.” Excelsior specializes not only in getting people the products they want, but also putting together and taking part in events that customers love. As a comic shop, they provide comic subscription services that Oswald says, “go above and beyond what you can get online or from big retail chains and that includes first printing guarantee.” As a game shop, Excelsior has the largest gaming space in the Birmingham Metro area, with more than 3,000 square feet of floor space and 16 tables specifically for face-to-face board games, card games or tabletop warfare games. “Our space can also be used for modeling and painting game pieces used specifically for tabletop warfare games,” Oswald adds. “We are a hobbiest-level geek venue.” And his customers agree: Friday nights are busy. Oswald also describes his customers as “the most passionate clientele you can have in a retail business. Above all, they are hobbyists and enthusiasts, intensely dedicated to their interests. They take part in a culture that is all their own,” Oswald says. For the board game enthusiast, Excelsior also hosts a weekly Board Game Night where board gamers can just come in with their own games, start up a game and socialize. Along with their local events, Excelsior hosts a number of special events that publishers sponsor for game and comic book shops around the country. These include events like the annual “Free Comic Book Day” and weekly gaming events like “Friday Night Magic” for the collectible card game “Magic: the Gathering” or “Pathfinder Society” for the “Pathfinder Role Playing Game.” The shop also hosts statewide competitive tournaments such as the “Alabama C.A.G.E. Match” for the tabletop war game “Warhammer 40K” and the “Birmingham Champions Series” for “Magic the Gathering.” Excelsior is located at 3150 Lorna Road. Student places in Pony Finals

Bluff Park Elementary cleans up outdoors Bluff Park Elementary School held its annual Outdoor Cleanup Day on Sept. 12. Han Briscoe, Ian Chatterton, Indie

Ali Kuhn competed at the national level in the United States Equestrian Foundation U.S. Pony Finals in Lexington, Ky., and finished eighth. She was in the “green” division, which included 80 well-trained riders and ponies. Kuhn and her pony, Percy, performed well in each of their divisions, earning fourth place Under Saddle, 11th place Over Fences and 21st place in the Model, which put them in eighth place overall. This was Kuhn and Percy’s first national championship and showing. Kuhn is a seventh grade student at Shades Mountain Christian School, and she is the daughter of Kevin and Elizabeth Kuhn, who are Hoover residents.

Briscoe, Harper Howard, Nathan Mann and others worked to clear debris blocking the creek in the outdoor classroom.

Long-Lewis Ford celebrates 100th anniversary The Long-Lewis Ford dealership in Hoover celebrated its 100th anniversary on Sept. 16. It’s now the oldest Ford dealer in Alabama. The dealership has an interesting backstory. In 1911, the retail stores in downtown Bessemer held a raffle to bring business to the downtown area: The prize was a Model T. A farmer won the new-famed vehicle but is purported to have said, “I don’t want

that thing around my house. It might scare my chickens so they won’t lay eggs.” Mr. Long of Long-Lewis Hardware bought the car from the farmer and later sold it. Convinced the automobile would soon dominate the transportation industry, Long persuaded Henry Ford to send him some more Model Ts to sell. By 1915, he had established a registered

dealership with Ford Motor Company. One hundred years later, the LongLewis dealership also gives back to the community. The dealership is a longtime supporter of the Susan G. Komen Race for the Cure and sponsor of other Komen events and the Laura Cranford Ovarian Cancer Taste of the Teal event. November 2015 | Hoover’s Magazine •

City launches Hoover + Ready initiative The Hoover City Schools Foundation is looking to strengthen community engagement through a new initiative, Hoover + Ready, launched on Sept. 15. Hoover + Ready focuses on the school system’s strengths, such as quality educators, rigorous academics and student success. Community support is key to uphold these strengths, especially in the face of another deficit budget, explains Hoover City Schools Foundation Executive Director Janet Turner. “(Hoover + Ready is) showcasing what sets our school system apart… what it means to be educated by Hoover City Schools and what it means to be Hoover ready,” Turner says.

Founded in 1992, the Hoover City Schools Foundation is a nonprofit organization that supports Hoover schools through classroom grants. Last year, the foundation distributed $22,000 in grants throughout Hoover schools, Turner says. In the past, the foundation has funded an iPad initiative, which

developed into the system’s current one-to-one device program in third through 12th grade, and several robotics programs. “We’re all in it together… It takes the school district doing its part, (and) it takes everybody in the community,” says HCS Superintendent Dr. Kathy Murphy.

Hoover City School System passes 2016 budget The Hoover City School System will operate under another budget with a deficit for the 2016 fiscal year. The Hoover Board of Education passed its 2016 fiscal year budget during a Sept. 14 meeting and voiced a commitment to balancing the budget in the future. The 2016 fiscal year budget projects roughly $168 million in expenditures and roughly $157 million in revenue, leaving a budget deficit of around $10.4 million, a smaller deficit than last year’s $11 million budget deficit. “We’re down in all of our revenue sources,” says HCS Chief Financial Officer Cathy Antee during premeeting budget hearing, noting a decrease in federal, state and local funding. While revenue has decreased,

student enrollment has increased, from approximately 12,400 students in 2008 to 13,836 for the 2016 fiscal year. “Everyone is asked to do a little more for less,” Antee says. “The standards and expectations at our schools have not declined, but our revenue is declining.” Additionally, recurring expenditures

— operating expenditures excluding capital projects — outpace revenue in the 2016 fiscal year budget, Antee says. Before the Hoover School Board approved the budget, board members and HCS Superintendent Dr. Kathy Murphy voiced strong commitment to researching and developing strategies to balance the system’s next budget.

tacey Handelong knew the first time she saw this house she would be, as she puts it, “super excited” for a chance to bring back the old place to its retro — yet modern — vibe. The house that sits on Savoy Street in Bluff Park intrigued Handelong, and she was ready to dive in. “Restoration began the day I closed on the house,” she says. With a flair for the 60s and 70s and armed with a degree in fashion merchandising, Handelong knew the home remodel project fit her to a tee. The unique architecture of the home kept Handelong searching for insights, stories and history of the property as she turned it into her dream home. “Some say it was a

summer retreat home and that the property was part of the dairy farm that was here in the 1900s,” she says. One of the first attempts to dig up information on her Savoy Street home’s past was a trip to the Birmingham Public Library Archives assisted by Bluffparkal.org. Here, Handelong was able to view old equalization tax records from the 1960s. She discovered the home’s builders, Charles and Annette Hall, completed the house and were living there by 1961. She was pleasantly surprised to find a photo from April 1961. The vintage photo of the property showed a nearly completed home and a car parked in the driveway. The Halls sold the home in 1967, but other than that, little is November 2015 | Hoover’s Magazine •

known about the family. With some of the home’s backstory, Handelong was ready to update and make the space her own — and bringing new life to an older property is nothing new for her. While living in Phoenix, Ariz., where she says she developed a large appreciation for mid-century modern interiors and architects, she owned a Ralph Haver home and restored it back to its original condition. So, she was up for the challenge for her new home in Hoover. To revive the home from its present deteriorating condition, a complete overhaul of the interior was needed. Water damage from the roof caused some major issues. “We had to correct deteriorated flooring, match existing 60s hardwood, refinish and stain existing flooring and once that was complete, we could paint,” Handelong explains. The bathrooms needed to be sanded from aged paint before they got their facelifts, and the front door was stripped and refinished. “I painted the walls a crisp white and installed floor-to-ceiling pinch pleat curtains in all of the rooms, creating a 60s luxury vibe. The curtains, combined with the barrel ceiling windows, enhance the natural sunlight that shifts throughout the day,” she says. On the upper level, Handelong removed a large wall and kitchen pantry. The existing kitchen was completely removed and updated to a new modern kitchen. 46

“I am not a cook by any stretch of the imagination — usually an epic fail when I advance past microwave popcorn, but I am however an avid ‘juicer,’” she explains. The design of the kitchen is based on just that, the needs for juicing. “The refrigerator drawers, sink and dishwasher are configured so I can pull ingredients, wash, juice and clean up efficiently.” One of the biggest changes Handelong faced was on the lower level. A large, circular fire pit had to be removed in the basement, and the existing tile floor was replaced with waterproof vinyl wood plank flooring. The ceiling was finished in with drywall, new lighting and new paint were added, and “we cleaned, cleaned, cleaned everything,” she says. “The lower level is a complete aesthetic

transformation,” Handelong continues. “Removal of the fire pit allowed for a new traffic flow, and it really opened up the room. We built a large shelf unit around two support beams and enclosed a third support beam.” Painting and flooring warmed up this once underwhelming space, and it is now a great place for Handelong and her friends to relax and hang out. Back upstairs, one of her favorite spaces in her new home is the living room. “The openness of the space is something I love. It lends visibility to the ceiling, windows and stair well. I find it super inspirational. It’s a wonderful space to just relax and enjoy,” she says. Even Handelong’s pup, Harvey Nichols, is a big fan of their new home. “Harvey grew up in an open floor plan home that was full of light and movement. So, I think he’s right at home again. He is most happy with his new space. But then again, he loves any home with his dinner bowl.” While she continues to explore the history behind her new “retro” home, Handelong has more remodeling plans to further bring her home to life. “Exterior painting and landscaping is in the future for sure,” she adds. However, just letting the dust settle on what she has completed and enjoying the changes from her yearlong project is refreshing, she adds. “When I enter my home, it makes me happy, like being greeted by silent friends that are happy to be hanging out in a cool space,” she says. “The house allows me to showcase my Brutalist sculptures, contemporary artwork and important mid-century modern furniture pieces.” n November 2015 | Hoover’s Magazine •

CULINARY CRAFT New cafe makes southern cuisine an art form WRITTEN BY HEATHER JONES SKAGGS PHOTOS BY DAVID MCELROY

ollowing several months of speculations about what would open in the space once occupied by The Park Avenue Café at Artists on the Bluff, residents now know and have a delicious new place to dine. Capers on Park Avenue filled the void and opened on July 15. Artists on the Bluff, located at 571 Park Avenue, had been looking to fill its empty café with hungry locals, so they called Bluff Park Elementary alum Chef Jay Roberson. Roberson’s resume highlights include The Summit Club, Riverchase Country Club, the original Capers Comfort Foods in Alabaster, the Pelham Civic Complex, Ballantrae Golf Club and Shoal Creek. Roberson started his culinary journey as

a dishwasher when Savages Bakery opened in Hoover and has been hooked on cooking ever since. He brings all of this experience and passion for cooking to Capers on Park Avenue. “We didn’t pick Artists on the Bluff — Artists on the Bluff picked us,” Roberson says. “When it comes to preparing great food, I am an artist. So, I guess we are the newest artists in the facility.” Capers on Park Avenue offers a delectable sampling of southern favorites with a gourmet twist, so it’s more than a “meat and three.” Each day, Capers serves a variety of dishes, including favorites like macaroni and cheese, Cajun-fried okra and pecan cobbler, which took them three years to perfect. “It is simply amazing,” Roberson says.

The Cajun-fried okra became a big hit when served at concession stands at the Pelham Civic Complex for SEC hockey matches. The okra was called “addictive as popcorn” by the fans attending the games, Roberson says. They post new menus to Capers’ Facebook page every few days. Everything from sliced roast beef, Creole red beans and rice, Greek orzo salad, squash casserole and banana pudding are among the selections. Everything is prepared fresh in the Capers on Park Avenue kitchen and served in a line where people can choose an entree and sides. For dessert, diners can choose from a rotating menu of banana pudding, a variety of cobblers, brown betty’s, spoon breads, cakes, pies and a sinful choice of cheesecakes complete with white or milk chocolate toppings. Each plate comes with cornbread, rolls and a combination of pickled carrots, okra, jalapeños and onions. One of Capers on Park Avenue’s first customers, Pat November 2015 | Hoover’s Magazine •

The sautéed vegetable medley is one of several side options.

Cartrette says she enjoyed it so much that both she and her husband went back a second time. “I am a fan of vegetables, and they have a great, well-prepared selection. My husband, Phil, got the fish and was very pleased. We also read the brochure about the history and honors of the chef and believe he is a great catch for Bluff Park,” Pat says. While the café is new, the Bluff Park community has been a part of Roberson’s life for years. He and his family grew up in the community and attended Bluff Park Elementary, now Artists on the Bluff, as children. “My family moved to Belle Terre when I was just starting kindergarten,” Roberson says. “I guess you could say I’ve gone full circle.” With the paint still drying on the new sign and with mainly social media word of mouth, the response from their first few weeks has been great. “It’s heartwarming to say the least,” Roberson says. “This is where we are supposed to be. There is no place like home.” Roberson says he hopes every person dining at Capers on Park Avenue will leave feeling the same way. “We feel certain everyone will find their personal favorites being served at Capers on Park Avenue.” Capers on Park Avenue is open Tuesday through Sunday from 10:30 a.m. to 2:30 p.m. For more information on Roberson and Capers on Park Avenue, visit Artistsonthebluff.com. n 54

why I love Hoover

‘The wonderful people of Hoover have welcomed me with open arms, and for that, I am truly grateful.’

O

ne word people won’t hear Trisston Wright Burrows say is “can’t.” This Prattville native was diagnosed with cerebral palsy and was the first student with a disability to be mainstreamed in first through 12th grade in the Autauga County School System. She moved to Hoover about nine years ago and married her husband, Brian, in 2008 at Aldridge Gardens. Burrows serves as a Hoover Area Chamber of Commerce Ambassador and is the marketing and public relations manager at Moore Coal Company, Inc. Q: What’s your favorite part about your job? A: My favorite part about my job is enhancing the visibility of Moore Coal Company within the Greater Birmingham Area. I am blessed with the opportunity to meet with wonderful people and businesses in our community that we want to align with and serve. Plus, I get to work with my sweet hubby, who is vice president of administration at Moore Coal Company. Q: What was the best part about being Ms. Wheelchair America/Alabama 2005? A: My understanding of disability issues and my dedication to help level the playing field for the 54 million Americans who have disabilities was deepened. Throughout my travels, personal appearances, presentations 82

and interactions with local and state governmental entities, I remained focused on bringing an awareness of the unique and extraordinary abilities of people with disabilities. Q: What advice would you give to others with disabilities? A: My advice to anyone — who has a disability or not — is to be extraordinary. That is to go beyond what is ordinary or usual. Q: I saw you enjoy creating artwork. Where do you get the inspiration for your pieces? A: I am drawn to the beauty, serenity and tranquility of nature. I believe miracles are all around us, and nature is certainly no exception. I view nature as God’s canvas, and I try to recreate this simple but exquisite beauty in my artwork.

Q: Why do you love Hoover? A: The wonderful people of Hoover have welcomed me with open arms, and for that, I am truly grateful. I cherish all of the friendships and special memories I have made here so far. Q: What do you like to do in your spare time? A: I love spending time with my sweet hubby. Whether it’s relaxing at home, cooking one of our “gourmet” meals or on one of our traveling adventures, we truly enjoy life together. Q: Who is your role model? A: Throughout my life, I have been blessed with many positive role models. My family has always encouraged me to do my very best, and that’s exactly what I’ve tried to do! n
