Home Sweet Hoover Drive through any neighborhood in Hoover, and you’ll see friendly waves, children playing outside, families going on walks and beautiful homes. As I visited the different communities to write an article for our Builders and Buyers Guide (beginning on page 28), I was reminded why I enjoy living here so much. Each neighborhood has its own unique style, but all of them are made up of welcoming people who share my love for the city, like Linda and Andy King. After living near The Preserve, the Kings decided to downsize and moved to Chapel Creek, behind Simmons Middle School. Their new home may be smaller, but it doesn’t lack character or charm. The couple has already made it their own, creating a playroom for their grandchildren and incorporating a wood feature from their last home.

Read more about them and see photos on page 32. Another family that calls Hoover home is Cullen, Katie and their daughter, Macey Gaines, who are featured on the cover and page 20. The couple became YouTube sensations after they started posting videos to share with family and friends a few years ago. They also share funny photos from around town at spots like Target. In addition to great residents and neighborhoods, the food and shopping also attract people to Hoover. One of the newest restaurants is Pie Five, which is featured on page 50. They bake customizable personal pizzas, creating a truly unique experience for visitors. Those are just a few of the interesting people and places you can

read about in this issue. Let us know what you love about the city and what you’d like to see us feature in the magazine. n

or the past 50 years, Hoover residents Bob and Phyllis Henson have visited an average of 6.5 countries per year. That jawdropping statistic makes them members of an elite club — people who have traveled to every one of the world’s 324 countries. The two are members of the well-known Travelers Century Club, which is based in California. The club is open to those who have traveled to 100 or more countries. The 10

Travelers Century Club recognizes 324 countries, and it is that list that the Hensons have followed while working to reach their goal of visiting every country. Bob, 79, and Phyllis, 78, began their international travel in 1965, when they made a trip to Canada. “We were startled by the fact that people in North America spoke French, Arabic, Italian and many native tongues of Eskimos and Indians,” Bob says. “We started a family goal of visiting all U.S. states and Canadian provinces.” The family then visited locations such as

PAGE 10: The Hensons got to see the highest point of Mount Everest. LEFT: Bob paid his respects at the Normandy cemetery. BELOW: Bob and Phyllis receive their certification for traveling to all 324 countries.

Israel, Singapore and India but never really considered trying to visit every country until 2005, when Bob and Phyllis managed to visit 22 countries on one around-the-world trip. “By then, we had hit 109 countries and were thus qualified for membership in the distinguished Travelers Century Club,” Bob says. “We joined and took on ‘hitting ‘em all’ as a legacy accomplishment together and the fact that so few people ever accomplish it.” The two had a leg up, though, because Bob’s career in international telecommunications required lots of international travel. He worked with companies in locations as diverse as Europe, Africa, the Far East and Australia and worked with the United Nations to audit public wireless networks across the globe. Although Bob typically didn’t have lots of leisure time when working on assignment in a new country, he and Phyllis did the best they could. “We were in many countries on weekends, Fridays and holidays when we could not get access to local telephone companies’ property and employees to do our work,” he says. “Also, delays in travel accommodations and weather can maroon you in places. We learned to be flexible and tour around the area as we could arrange.” Bob’s career actually led the two to their favorite city in the world, Hong Kong. The two lived there for two and a half years during the course of Bob’s career, and they

loved being there. “We loved the warmness of the people. They respected the work we were doing, they spoke English and the locals were very well educated,” Bob says. “The city/state of Hong Kong is beautiful, with its vast numbers of high-rise residential neighborhoods, the energetic bustle of the Central Business District and the beauty of the Victoria Harbour and Pacific Ocean. We have many friends there, and we go back every chance we get.” In 2014, Bob and Phyllis finally saw ‘em all, marking the last four countries — Cuba, Yemen, North Korea and Libya — off their list. Libya was the last country to come off the list, and unfortunately, it was one of their least favorites. “We had tried to get into it for 12 years. We went in under the cover of darkness. We had to pay crazy prices for food, auto diesel fuel and safe passage,” Bob says. The two stayed in a city called Tobruq, and while they met no harm during their stay, they left none too soon. As they traveled toward the border of Egypt to leave Libya, they learned that soon after they left Tobruq, a car bomb had gone off in the area. “The good Lord was looking after us,” Bob says. Bob has now retired, and the couple May 2015 | Hoover’s Magazine •

plans to go back and explore some countries further. This year, they plan to visit the Middle East, southern Europe and Norway. In 2016, the two will take a 30-day European river cruise. “Cruises, be they river or ocean, appeal to us greatly as we only have to unpack and repack once,” Bob says. “We have learned to pack very efficiently, but if you are traveling through many countries, you have to carry appropriate clothing for multiple climate conditions.” Aspiring globetrotters take note: Bob has some advice for you. “My advice to any international traveler is to do your homework, shop your destinations on the Internet and work with a competent travel agent whom you trust,” he says. “The world today is fraught with danger, and detailed investigation of each destination through the U.S. State Department is highly recommended.” While Bob and Phyllis love to spend time abroad, they always look forward to returning home. “The greatest lesson we have learned

from all of our travels is how proud we are to be Americans, where a good education and hard work pay enormously. We are also dedicated members of our church, and our friends support us with their good works and prayers,” he says. “We have also been strongly supported by our immediate families and great neighbors. Most of these groups are anxious to hear of our latest adventures and wish us a fair wind when we leave.” n

PowerBark creates tail-wagging meals for dogs on the go

P

et owners are taking their dogs with them everywhere — from road trips to the office. So, their pups are constantly away from home during normal meal times. To help both owners and dogs with their hectic schedules, Beth Arnold and Leslie Fhima created PowerBark meal bars. A former professional figure skater, Arnold understands how important it is to have a healthy lifestyle. So, it was a natural transition when she decided to become a registered dietitian and licensed nutritionist. Arnold focused on patients who struggled with eating disorders and weight management issues — something she saw regularly while on the ice rink. And it was her skating ties that helped create PowerBark.

Arnold met up with her longtime friend, Fhima, during a figure skating reunion in Chicago in 2009. While catching up, the two started talking about their jobs and dogs. Fhima, a personal trainer, regularly took her dog Sadie with her to clients’ homes. But that often meant Sadie would miss her regular meal times. With a problem to solve and Arnold’s nutrition background, the two became partners and started working on a pet food solution. They started testing different ingredients and combinations to come up with the perfect meal-replacement bar for dogs. The Association of American Feed Controls Officials (AAFCO) has strict rules on what dog food must contain, and it took seven to 10 analyses in a three-year period from them before the bar’s formula was perfected in 2013.

LEFT: PowerBark coowner Beth Arnold says her family and dogs, Louie and Riley, love living in Hoover. ABOVE LEFT: The bars are good for outdoor excursions, like camping, hiking and hunting. ABOVE RIGHT: The bars can be purchased individually or in a pack of 12.

“The food has to have the One bar is a complete right amount of protein, among meal for a 30-pound other things,” says Arnold, dog. who worked with an AAFCO consultant through the process. “There are a lot of similarities with what we eat.” But the AAFCO wasn’t the only one who had to give approval. They also had to check with their furry customers. Of the dogs tested, 98.6 percent enjoyed the bars. Even Arnold’s two pups, Riley and Louie, can’t get enough of them. “As soon as they hear me crinkle the wrapper, they come running,” Arnold says. “They love the bars.” The PowerBark bars, which are manufactured and assembled in the United States, are made from natural ingredients with added vitamins and minerals. They are gluten, wheat, soy and corn free. The bars are complete meals for dogs, not a treat. A bar is one meal for a 30-pound adult dog. So if the dog is 10 pounds, they will need 1/3 of the bar for one meal. And the average lab will need two bars in the morning and two at night. The meal-replacement bars, which are $4 each, are perfect for hiking, camping, hunting, road trips, tailgating, pet day care or taking them to the office. A case of 12 PowerBark bars is $48 when purchased online. The bars are interchangeable with regular dog food, so they won’t cause problems when dogs eat them during excursions. Instead of trying to measure out the dog’s food, owners can just pack some bars when they need to go somewhere. As the PowerBark motto says, they are “a meal on the run for the dog — Beth Arnold

on the go.” “Just like how energy bars became convenient for us, PowerBark bars are something to grab and go for them,” she says. “Anything that’s trending in the human world will make its way to the dog industry. We like to humanize our pets. They’re an extended part of our family.” The women also have some dog treats in the works, which will be coming out soon. They’re planning to launch two kinds: grain-free and meat treats. Going forward, they want to continue to create new flavors and bar sizes. This woman-owned business has come a long way since the two reunited in Chicago. “It’s really great we’ve been able to do all of this,” says Arnold, who now works on PowerBark full time. “We’ve launched a business that we believe in so much. There are ups and downs with being an entrepreneur, but I don’t have any regrets – and I’ve learned so much.” While the company is important to Arnold, her family comes first. Her husband and three daughters have been behind her the entire time. “They are proud of me,” Arnold says. “It’s important for me to show my daughters hard work is worth it.” The bars can be purchased at Powerbark.com, Amazon. com and local stores like Ed’s Pet World, First Avenue Rocks, Piggly Wiggly, Organic Harvest, Mountain High Outfitters and the Greater Birmingham Humane Society gift shop. They are also available in stores in Minnesota (where Fhima lives), New Mexico, Texas and California. n May 2015 | Hoover’s Magazine •

Their videos ranged from silly conversations to shopping trips. “We try to live every day and make people smile or laugh,” Cullen says. When Katie’s internship ended and they moved back to Hoover, they decided to keep posting daily vlogs. “We wanted to get more serious about it,” she says. “We had gained a following and formed true friendships through the year.” So they continued to create the videos, in addition to working full-time jobs. But after Cullen was let go from jobs because of downsizing, he decided to focus on their videos. “That’s when it turned into something serious,” he says. “It was make-or-break. The desk job will always be there if I need to go back.” He gave himself six months to see if he could make it just working on their YouTube channel, and that was more than a year ago. Now, they have nearly 100,000 subscribers on YouTube, more than 100,000 followers on Instagram and more than 40,000 followers on Twitter (@Culligan27 and @KatiePie7). “We didn’t realize it would turn into this,” Katie says. But Cullen isn’t the only one getting in on the fun. Katie recently quit her job, as well, to spend more time with family and also to launch her new YouTube channel: KatieOnTheFlipSide. She’ll post videos on parenting, baby updates and more “mom stuff,” they say. Their videos have also expanded with the addition of their daughter, Macey Gaines, who is seven months old. Katie actually found out she was pregnant with her a week after the 2014 snowstorm — which left her stuck trying to get home for 13 hours. They posted videos throughout the pregnancy, from doctor’s visits to their ride to the hospital. But the journey to baby wasn’t an easy one. Before Macey Gaines, the couple experienced two miscarriages. With a video channel that’s normally fun and lighthearted, they debated posting about them. “We struggled with whether we should share that or not. We thought about just saying we were sick and not posting a video the day after the first miscarriage,” Cullen

says. “But after we decided to talk about it, we started hearing about other people who had been through the same thing.” With the hard times came the good, and now followers can see their cute bundle of joy in videos every day. “Everything was part of God’s ultimate plan to get us to where we are now,” Katie says. “We have a happy miracle baby.” The pair has also been hesitant to post videos featuring family members. When Cullen’s father was diagnosed with lung cancer, Cullen shared his thoughts in his vlog — but he didn’t video his father. “I was weary about sharing him,” Cullen says. But after talking with his father, he realized it actually might be a good thing to include him in the videos. “He really opened up,” Cullen says. “He wanted to have his own characters to keep his mind off of the cancer. It’s been a blessing in disguise.” Sadly, his father passed away in late March (after the original interview). But, he left behind plenty of memories and laughs through his vlogs that the family can watch for years to come. And one day, Macey Gaines will be able to look back at the videos and see her grandfather, parents and even herself. “She’s been online every day since she was born,” Cullen says. “She lights up and stops doing what she’s doing when she sees the camera.” In addition to videos, the family also took funny photos in front of Target next to the round, red balls. The idea came about after Cullen posted videos of him walking through Target singing a jingle he created about the balls. When the song caught on, Cullen decided to take daily photos for a year (ending April 6) with the balls — actually called bollards — and created #TargetBalling. His photos soon went viral online, and he started incorporating props, costumes and family members. Target even featured him on their website. “I think my creative side got the best of me,” Cullen says. From funny photos to goofy videos, the couple has come a long way since posting videos for just their friends and family — and they aren’t slowing down any time soon. “We’ve been doing it for almost four years, which feels like a long time,” Katie says. “But, it’s really just the beginning. Medical Anxiety

health & beauty

A physician offers his best test advice WRITTEN BY JOHN FARLEY, M.D. PHOTOS CONTRIBUTED

S

tudents facing finals aren’t the only test-anxiety sufferers this month. As primary care physicians with Birmingham Internal Medicine Associates at St. Vincent’s One Nineteen, my colleagues and I regularly witness winces from patients while we explain why a medical test is essential to an accurate diagnosis. We understand. We’ve had our share of test anxiety, too. That’s why we encourage patients to ask questions about why we’re ordering tests. We’re eager to explain how diagnostics are used in their care. For specific questions about how to prepare for the tests we order, we often refer patients to the schedulers at One Nineteen’s diagnostics department. Those professionals can brief patients and caregivers on what they should know before they arrive. We also suggest accessing test-specific information and preregistration online forms at Onenineteen.com. That sort of studying ahead helps. After all, no one wants their exam delayed because they either didn’t understand the instructions or didn’t take them seriously. While every patient should ask specific questions about their concerns, here’s what I suggest as a sort of allpurpose study guide for physician-ordered tests: Ask the diagnostic department schedulers when — or whether — you should eat, drink or take medications beforehand.

If you must fast before an afternoon test, ask if you can simply skip lunch. Confirm when you should arrive, how long you will be there and when you can resume regular activities. Ask if you should confirm your insurance coverage. Determine whether you’ll need to wear special shoes or clothing. Find out if you’ll need someone to drive you home. Learn when you should expect to receive the results. And as helpful as doctors try to be, we can’t accommodate every patient request. Sometimes we’re asked to order blood tests before annual check-ups. But since insurance covers specific tests only when linked to specific, doctor-detected symptoms, we don’t order those tests ahead. FEELS LIKE HOME Taking a look at some popular Hoover communities WRITTEN AND PHOTOS BY LAUREN DOWDLE

A

sk people who live in Hoover what they love about the city, and their answers will range from schools and shopping to restaurants and parks. But something they all have in common is that they enjoy living here. There are more than 84,000 people in Hoover, according to the last U.S. Census Bureau. That number has steadily increased in the past decade — and it’s easy to see why. As the largest Birmingham suburb, Hoover attracts people with places like the Riverchase Galleria, Aldridge Gardens, Hoover Metropolitan Stadium, Moss Rock Preserve and Hoover Public Library. It also has top-notch restaurants, historical sites, parks, golf courses and more that draw visitors and residents alike. In addition to all of the places and things to do in the city, there are also unique communities that bring and keep people here for years. 28

• Hoover’s Magazine | May 2015

There are several welcoming neighborhoods like Riverchase, Monte D’Oro, Russet Woods, Chace Lake, Deer Valley, Lake Cyrus, Patton Chapel, Rocky Ridge, Inverness and Rocky Ridge. Here’s a look at just a few of Hoover’s expanding communities.

TRACE CROSSINGS

Trace Crossings Often a cut-through from South Shades Crest to Hwy. 150, Lake Crest definitely deserves a closer look. Situated around a tranquil lake, the

1,500-acre community has a variety of home styles and sizes — with even more homes in the works. There’s also a clubhouse, playground, walking paths, pool, water features and tennis courts. All of Trace Crossings’ different subdivisions are connected with sidewalks, which also lead to the Hoover Met and Hoover High School.

The authentic southern-style houses are surrounded by playgrounds, ponds and wide sidewalks — reminding residents of a simpler time. There’s also 250 acres of scenic trails in the Moss Rock Preserve for them to hike and enjoy, as well as a pool, town hall and 8-acre park. There are several events held at the park, including the Moss Rock Festival, The Preserve Jazz Festival, movies in the park and holiday events. Residents can also make the short walk to the neighborhood’s restaurants, The Boot and Vecchia Pizzeria & Mercato. The community is located off of Patton Chapel Road.

LAKE CREST

Lake Crest Situated between Shades Crest Road and The Grove shopping center, Lake Crest is filled with stunning homes and a family atmosphere. The neighborhood has a clubhouse, pool, tennis court and lake. There are also sidewalks throughout, creating trails for children, adults and their pets. The community has a mix of stately detached homes, along with townhomes and garden homes — ideal for buyers looking for a smaller yard to maintain. THE PRESERVE

The Preserve For those looking to enjoy nature, while still being just minutes away from restaurants and shopping centers, The Preserve is the perfect place to live.

ROSS BRIDGE

Ross Bridge Known as “A Classic American Resort Town,” Ross Bridge has a mix of traditional charm and modern living. There are different neighborhoods within Ross Bridge, and each has its own distinct style. With more than 200 acres of natural parks, Ross Bridge features swimming pools, a playground area, clubhouse, shopping, restaurants and professional services. Even those who don’t live in Ross Bridge can experience the community by staying at the Renaissance Ross Bridge Golf Resort & Spa, which features the 8,191-yard Robert Trent Jones Golf Course. There are also events throughout the year like Uncorked!, Arts & Music on the Green, movies in the park, Spring Market, 5Ks and Lighting of the Green. The community is located on Ross Bridge Parkway off of Hwy. 150. May 2015 | Hoover’s Magazine •

BLUFF PARK

Bluff Park With a rich heritage, Bluff Park is almost a city in itself. The community rests on Shades Mountain, giving residents spectacular views. It’s filled with eclectic homes, businesses and restaurants, like Park Ave. Café, Tip Top Grill and Consider It Joy Baking. Bluff Park also attracts creativity, serving as the

TIPS FROM A REALTOR Moving can be a hectic time. Not only do you have to pack and try to sell your current home, but you also have to find the right one to move into. To make it a little easier, here are three house-hunting tips from Hoover realtor Peter Northcott, LAH Real Estate Company (Lahrealestate.com). Schools. One of Hoover’s biggest selling points is its school system. Families with children — or ones planning on having them — should research what schools the neighborhoods are zoned for. “Find the school system you’re interested in,” Northcott says. “Some of my customers visit the schools and talk with the staff.”

home for local talents at Artists on the Bluff. Located in the old Bluff Park Community School building, artists use the space to teach lessons, work on their artwork and showcase galleries. Greystone Just minutes from the hustle and bustle of 280, Greystone is a relaxing escape for all of its residents. It has continued to expand, now including different sub-communities with a range of home styles and options. The community also has Greystone Golf & Country Club, which features restaurants, golf courses, a pool, a fitness center and tennis courts. Kirkman Preserve One of the newer Hoover communities, Kirkman Preserve is located off of Caldwell Mill Road near Spain Park High School. “It’s a wonderful addition to the 280 corridor,” says Hoover realtor Peter Northcott, LAH Real Estate Company (Lahrealestate.com). Several of the homes have a rustic – yet industrial – interior style, incorporating dark floors, wood accents and exposed bricks. The community also has a pool, boardwalk, regular events for all ages, walking trails and views of Moon Glow Lake. n

Research. “I encourage people to do their homework,” Northcott says. “See if the home is close to the schools you like, place of worship and favorite stores. You’ve got to see if it works for you. There are so many different variables.” To learn even more about a neighborhood, home searchers can look them up at Census. gov. They can also talk with residents to see what they like and dislike about living there. Take Photos. Before you can move into the perfect home, you have to sell your current one. And having good photos of your house can attract more potential owners. “If you’re going to sell your home, it’s important to use a professional photographer,” Northcott says. “Buyers want to see it.”

ay is the month of dreams. The whole summer is in front of us, and thoughts of sandy toes, long bike rides and porch dinners are dancing in our heads. Nesting takes on a completely new meaning when we want to sink ourselves into an outdoor chair with a juicy book or lounge by the pool with a cool drink. Our minds are suddenly focused on the warm breezes outside and how we can relax and unwind under a shady tree, instead of cuddled indoors under a wintry blanket. Now’s the time for outdoor furnishings that will last through the

seasons, but more importantly, pieces that get you outside now, relaxing and enjoying friends. Whether it’s lounging on a made-for-outside sofa or a chic dining table and chairs, the atmosphere sets the stage for growing relationships. What’s a delicious dinner without great conversation? Or a fun drink without a relaxing place to enjoy it? An artfully placed dining table and chairs creates the setting for laughter and storytelling under the stars. A sofa-sectional with lush, long-

lasting Sunbrella cushions encourages lingering long after sunset. Enjoy the outdoors! Invest in furnishings that will last year after year, memories upon memories with materials made to be outside. Spain Park has Presidential Scholar candidates The Presidential Scholars Program recognized two students from Spain Park High School. In addition to the Spain Park students — Joshua E. Taggart and Rebecca N. Leech — there were five other candidates in Shelby County. “It’s really just a mark of distinction,” says Tracy Prater, Spain Park High School college and career specialist. “It’s exceptional to have two (Presidential Scholar Program candidates), and we couldn’t be happier for them. It speaks to the education they’re receiving here.” Students are chosen for Presidential Scholars Program based off of academic achievement and standardized test scores. Around 3,900 high school seniors from across the nation were selected as candidates for this year’s Presidential Scholars Program, and 59 were from Alabama. Approximately 560 semifinalists will be chosen from the 3,900 candidates. The 2015 Presidential Scholars Program finalists were named in April, according to the Department of Education.

Fathers, daughters enjoy dance More than 260 fathers and daughters attended the Prince of Peace Church Girl Scouts’ annual father-daughter dance. This year marked the ninth consecutive year the Girl Scouts and their mothers hosted this event in the church’s Deasy Hall. They had a record number of reservations. DJ Jerry Dichiara introduced the rookie fathers by playing “YMCA.” They danced and wore various hats to the delight of their daughters. This event originated when the now-eighth grade Girl

Scouts were Brownie Scouts in kindergarten. Parishioner and PoP school parent Bridget Carter was one of the founders of the event, and Patricia O’Neal, also a PoP school parent, has assisted her for many of the past nine years. Although their daughters’ troop disbanded in sixth grade, the girls continued to help host the event for kindergarten through fifth-grade girls. The dance has generated thousands of dollars, which has been donated to the Amelia Center and PoP building fund.

Once customers add all of their favorites, the pizzas are put through a conveyor oven. “It’s your pizza in five minutes for $6.99, no matter what toppings you put on it,” he says. “We want to keep it simple.” Pie Five also has 10 signature pies including BBQ chicken, chicken carbonara, pesto chicken alfredo, farmer’s market and high five, a favorite of meat-lovers. “A lot of people will start out with one of those and then add other toppings,” Guttshall says. For those not in the mood for pizza, Pie Five also has four signature salads: classic Italian, Greek, chicken Caesar and spinach. The salads are made in a pizza crust bowl and can also be customized. “It’s made right there for you, and it’s fun to pick your own stuff,” he says. To satisfy a customer’s sweet tooth, the restaurant has chocolate chip, turtle and ultimate brownies. “The brownies are phenomenal,” he says. 52

Guests can enjoy a beverage with either a side salad or dessert for $3 more. Guttshall and Gustin also own and manage 60 Applebee’s restaurants across the Southeast, but they say they wanted to do something different. So, they started studying the fast-casual industry and saw people, especially millennials, wanted customizable, quick food. Pie Five offers that and more, Guttshall says. “It’s not just your standard — Kurt Guttshall pizza place,” he explains. “You get to build or select your own pizza, and we only use fresh ingredients.” To complete the fast-casual experience, the restaurant also has a modern style, from the wall art and furniture to even the bathrooms, which have futuristic sinks. “People say they would eat in there,”

Guttshall says with a chuckle. Just as important as the food and atmosphere is having the best employees, Guttshall says. They want to help customers through the ordering process and give them an enjoyable visit. “We make a real guest connection,” he says. “It’s all about the service, and our employees are really great.” The pair have a deal to develop 25 Pie Five locations in the southeast, and they hope to open locations in Vestavia Hills and on 280 going forward. But, they say they won’t compromise on finding the perfect sites. Pie Five is open everyday from 11 a.m. to 10 p.m. For more information, visit Piefivepizza. com. n ABOVE: The pizzas are ready in 5 minutes or less. fter 16 years as the principal of Bluff Park Elementary School, David Fancher is retiring. Fancher, 60, has been working in education for 38 years. He’s been married to his wife for 36 years, and the couple has two daughters — both in the education field. Q: Why did you decide to go into education? A: I’m a third-generation educator, so I have always seen how important teachers are and the impact they have on students’ lives. Q: What’s your favorite part about your job? A: The “aha” moments when you see a child understand a concept and the light bulb go off. Also, working with such dedicated professionals who do everything they can for students everyday.

meant so much to me. Q: What do you want to do when you retire? A: Relax, travel, do some volunteer work. I haven’t really found what the “thing” is that I want to do. Q: What is something not many people know about you? A: I’ve had a wide variety of jobs growing up, from general construction to being a police dispatcher/jailer.

Q: Why do you love Hoover? A: Hoover and the Bluff Park community know the importance of a good education. They support me and Q: What is your favorite book, and the school anyway they can. why? A: “The Giving Tree” by Shell Q: What will be the hardest part Silverstein. As I’ve gotten older, I’ve about retiring? seen myself and my life played out in A: Leaving the people who have the book. the tree and now the old man where a stump is a pretty good place to sit. Q: If you hadn’t gone into education, what do you think you would be doing today? A: Something with the law, either as an attorney or a police officer. Q: Who is your role model, and why? A: My dad. He grew up on a ranch in Oklahoma, became a teacher and earned his doctorate from the University of Oklahoma. He ended his career as the Provost at the University of Montevallo. He was always a hard worker and took care of everyone. Even today, many years after his passing, people still tell me what a great man he was and the impact he had on their lives. n
