veryone already has a mental image of a ballerina’s body — lithe muscles, long legs and a slim silhouette. However, Shelly Smith, owner of Pure Barre in Riverchase, believes that every body, no matter the shape or size, can benefit from a ballerina’s workout. During Pure Barre workouts, participants use a barre — a stationary handrail — to exercise and tone every muscle group from head to toe, Smith says.

“We incorporate small, isometric movements that stem from contracting the working muscle groups to lift, tone and burn the entire body,” she says. “The best part of class is that we take time after working each muscle group to stretch out the body. This allows you to create long, lean muscles. Think ballerina body.” Smith said no previous dancing experience is needed to excel at Pure Barre. “We have such a wide variety of clients with us at Pure Barre Riverchase that

some have a dance background, but the majority have never slipped on a pair of ballet or dance slippers,” she says. “I and my instructors are a part of that majority. We don’t have that ballet background, nor do we or you need it to take Pure Barre classes.” Smith has actually focused on her fitness since her college years at the University of Alabama, where she took fitness classes and began healthy eating habits. After college, she began working 65-hour-long workweeks at the family business, Mark’s Outdoor Sports in Vestavia, but she still made time at the gym a priority. Eventually, she tried a Pure Barre workout and was blown away. “I was never a dancer, barely a high school cheerleader at best. I thought no way would I like the barre fitness lifestyle and much less that it would actually be a workout,” Smith says. “Little did I know that it would rock my world, make me sore in ways I had

never known and soon become the only workout I would ever need.” After Smith’s father died in 2012, she wanted to branch out and open her own business, but she didn’t know what kind of business she wanted to run. “That’s when I realized how deep my love was for fitness and how much I tried to center my day around my scheduled Pure Barre classes,” she says. “So the saying is true — ‘Do what you love, love what you do.’ I did just that and reached out to the corporate office of Pure Barre. Then, I started working to make my dreams come true.” Pure Barre Riverchase opened in fall 2013; to date, Smith and her team of instructors have taught more than 6,800 classes. Smith says she chose to open her business in Hoover because it’s such a “busy” part of the Birmingham metro area. “Pure Barre is a primarily women’s workout group, and there are so many

working women, stay-at-home moms and retired residents (in Hoover) that it seemed like a perfect fit to add a Pure Barre to the area,” Smith says. Smith says she recommends Pure Barre to anyone and everyone. “I recommend Pure Bare to all body types, all ages and all stages of life. If you can hold on to the barre, you can do a class,” says Smith, who says those doing Pure Barre can burn up to 600 calories per class. “There are ways to modify each

move or challenge yourself deeper each class. The same class can be taken by all fitness level clients.” That recommendation also extends to men, Smith says. “Pure Barre is primarily taken by women, but we do have several guys who take classes with our studio. They claim it is the biggest challenge of a workout they have ever tried, and they love it,” she says. Back Home The Regions Tradition returns to Greystone for 25th anniversary WRITTEN BY LAUREN DOWDLE PHOTOS CONTRIBUTED

t’s an exciting year for Greystone Golf & Country Club. Not only is it celebrating its 25th anniversary, but it’s also bringing the Regions Tradition back to Hoover for its quartercentury milestone. That’s especially fitting because the first Regions Tradition was played at Greystone back in 1992. Although back then, the event was known as the Bruno’s Memorial Classic, remembering Ronnie Bruno’s family members who died in a plane crash. The annual event has come a long way since then. “There wasn’t even a clubhouse back then,” recalls Liz Leckemby, Regions Tradition tournament director and Bruno Event Team’s assistant vice president of golf. “There were just tents for the players. It’s changed a lot in the past 25 years.” While the Regions Tradition got its start 14

at Greystone, it hasn’t been held there since 2005. In the past decade, it’s been at Ross Bridge and Shoal Creek most recently. “It’s a real sense of pride for us here at Greystone to be part of the Regions Tradition as they come back home to where it all started,” says Steve Smith, director of golf at Greystone Golf & Country Club. “When it comes right down to it, we’ll open our doors and host the country’s second biggest cocktail party, while getting entertained by the greatest golfers of all time.” There will be 81 professional golfers, giving attendees the opportunity to see pros who are already in the World Golf Hall of Fame — something unique to the sport. The list of legendary golfers includes defending champion Jeff Maggert, Fred Couples, Bernhard Langer, Colin Montgomerie, Hale Irwin and two-time

The Regions Tradition is a major championship on the PGA Tour Champions schedule where players will receive double Charles Schwab Cup Points. “The biggest thing right off is that it’s one of the major championships on the tour, and it draws the crème de la crème of players,” Smith says. “All of the best players in the world want to come and win.” In addition to an array of professional golfers, there will also be several celebrities taking swings during the Regions Tradition. Attendees will see famous faces like Nick Saban, Gus Malzahn, Hugh Freeze, Kirby Smart, Bo Jackson, Avery Johnson, Dan Mullen, Bruce Pearl, Dr. Condoleezza Rice, Steve Spurrier and Charles Barkley. Paul Finebaum’s SEC Network show will also broadcast live on Wednesday, along with other sports stations. “We want to make it the event to be at each year,” Leckemby says.

In the past, about 75,000 people have come during the course of the event, but Smith says they are hoping to tip the scale at more than 100,000 this year. “Add to that all of the people entertaining at the houses around the course, and you’ve got yourself the party of parties,” Smith adds. What makes this event even more special is that it benefits local charities, with Children’s of Alabama being the primary one. In the 25 years the PGA Tour Champions event has been in Birmingham, there has been more than $14 million donated to charity. “As a PGA professional, it’s hard not to look at all of the guys (professional golfers) who are coming to play in my backyard, so to speak, and think back to the time when I was watching them on TV every weekend competing,” Smith says. “More important than that is the whole idea of what makes this whole thing tick — and that’s the money donated to the local charities: There is no replacing how special that is and what it means to those kids. It all comes back to giving back, and who doesn’t want to have this much fun while helping a child in need?” From the food and drinks to the sports environment, there’s really something for everyone at the Regions Tradition. Tickets are $20 for any one day of the tournament, $80 for five any-one-day tickets and children 18 years old and younger are free when accompanied by a ticketed adult. Petite retires from Chamber If you’re a member of the Hoover Area Chamber of Commerce or have been to a chamber event, chances are you’ve Petite met Verona Petite. After more than seven years of dedicated service to the chamber, Petite retired from her position as executive assistant to the director on March 17. Petite came to the Hoover Chamber in November 2008 after 12 years with the office of the Homewood mayor. She quickly found a kind and welcoming community among the Hoover businesses. “My experience with the chamber has been nothing but good,” Petite said. “I have met wonderful people in the community: great businesses (and) great people. They’ve all been so supportive...I found out that even though it’s bigger, (Hoover) still feels like a small town.” In her seven years with the Hoover Chamber, Petite has done everything from planning galas to coordinating job fairs to recruiting members. In fact, Chamber Executive Director Bill Powell estimated Petite has recruited more than 800 members to the chamber. She might be stepping away from the daily workings of the chamber, but Petite said she is definitely not going away. In addition to renovating her home and spending time with her family, Petite plans to continue attending Hoover Chamber luncheons.

BOE recognizes community From a championship bowling team to the 2016 Alabama Bus Driver of the Year, Hoover City Schools has a lot to be proud of. The Board of Education recognized the accomplishments of the school community during a March 14 meeting at Rocky Ridge Elementary School. Veteran Hoover City Schools Bus Driver Rhonda Holman was honored for her achievement at the 2016 Alabama Love the Bus event. Holman, Hoover’s nominee for Bus Driver of the Year, was selected from bus drivers across the state as

the 2016 Alabama Love the Bus Driver of the Year. The Spain Park High School boys bowling team was also recognized during the meeting. The team topped the competition at Alabama’s first state bowling championship. Riverchase Elementary School’s Keith Warner was recognized by the Board of Education for his qualification to the Alabama Geography Bee. Warner, a fifth grader, is one of six Hoover City Schools students who qualified for the state competition on April 1.

Bluff Park students take annual field trip Bluff Park Elementary School fifth graders recently returned from their annual fifth grade field trip to Dauphin Island. The Wednesday to Friday trip encompassed a study of the

Church provides weekend backpacks When Prince of Peace parishioner Ruth Ollie heard there were an estimated 200 hungry children right in the church’s backyard, she was shocked and knew she had to act. Students at a school less than five minutes from her church were chronically “food-insecure,” basically hungry, over the weekend, according to local nonprofit Hoover Helps. As a former teacher with children and grandchildren of her own, Ollie knew the role proper nutrition

played in a child’s life and how it contributed to classroom success. She also knows that feeding the hungry is one of The Corporal Works of Mercy of the Catholic Church. With Father John Fallon’s approval and full support, Ollie presented a proposal to POP’s Minus One ministry group to adopt the “Weekender Backpack” project to provide weekend food for students at Simmons Middle School.

The Minus One group, all of whom have lost a loved one, lovingly embraced the project and so did the entire POP faith community. In just a few short weeks, more than $30,000 was donated toward the project. The parish’s religious education students who are preparing for their First Eucharist at POP decorated and filled bags with non-perishable foods as part of their recent Sacramental retreat to help the POP outreach, too.

City of Hoover poised for economic growth As the executive director of the Economic Development Association of Alabama, Jim Searcy knows about the state’s economic landscape. On March 17, Searcy praised Hoover’s position for economic growth during a Hoover Area Chamber of Commerce luncheon. Economic development has changed during the past 20 years and encompasses more than just industrial development, Searcy said. In addition to recruiting businesses in the automotive, aerospace and manufacturing industries, Searcy said 22

Every year, Children’s Miracle Network Hospitals identifies a child with a remarkable medical story from each state. Strong, a student at Berry Middle School, is one of 54 Champions representing the 32 million treatments provided each year at Children’s Miracle Network Hospitals, a network that includes Children’s of Alabama. Before Strong was born, he was diagnosed with hydrocephalus, a condition preventing the fluid surrounding the brain and spinal cord to properly drain. Left untreated, it can cause brain damage. Doctors said James could be born deaf, mute, blind, disabled and mentally incompetent and would not live beyond age 3. Although James has endured 15 brain surgeries, an infection on his brain and a long list of conditions delaying his development, including cerebral palsy, Dandy-Walker syndrome and a spinal cord tumor, the strong-willed teen is thriving. His motto is “Go strong or go home.”

Students collect food for charity Ryan Guillory, Braden White, Abby Guillory and Harrison White of Prince of Peace Catholic School showed Father Gerald Holloway the 800 pounds of canned food they collected as a Lenten service project. Father Holloway is associate pastor at Prince of Peace Catholic Church where the Guillory and

White families are parishioners. The students went door to door in their neighborhoods to collect the canned goods. The cans were donated to Catholic Social Services’ food pantry on Oxmoor Road days before Easter weekend. This food bank serves the entire Birmingham community.

Hoover ranked in happiest places to live Three Shelby County cities have been deemed some of the happiest places in Alabama by career information website Zippia.com. Chelsea, Helena and Hoover landed in the Top 10 on Zippia’s 10 Happiest Places in Alabama list. Zippia.com analyzed 74 places in Alabama on seven criteria: education level, employment, length of commute, cost of living, families and marriages, home ownership and poverty rate. Chelsea came in at No. 8 on the 10 Happiest Places in Alabama list, with a homeowner percentage of 87.2. Additionally, 69.3 percent of the city’s adults are married, the website

noted. Helena ranked ninth on the list, with 87.4 percent of the population classified as homeowners and 63.2 percent of the adult population married. Hoover rounded out the list taking 10th place and recording a 61.6 home ownership percentage and 58.9 marriage percentage. Three other Shelby County cities also achieved high rankings, although they did not make the Top 10 list. Pelham came in at No. 15, Calera at No. 19 and Alabaster at No. 23. ver imagine what the perfect home would be like? Residents got a glimpse into what that might actually look like when they visited Hoover’s Ideal Home. Last year’s Greater Birmingham Parade of Homes Ideal Home was located in Hoover’s prestigious Preserve community. A “smart home,” it represented the newest and most innovative products that every homeowner can enjoy. Approximately 4,000 people came to see the house during the parade, which was held May 9 and 10 and May 16 and 17, says Kyle Murphy, president of the Greater Birmingham Association of Home Builders (GBAHB). The concept of the Ideal Home was added to the Parade of Homes about five years ago, he says, and the Parade of Homes is now one of the longest-running parades in America. Celebrating 60 years of showcasing highend designer homes, the GBAHB chapter has around 1,400 members and is the fifth May 2016 | Hoover’s Magazine •

HOME BUILDERS BACKSTORY A group of 23 men met in Birmingham’s Redmont Hotel to discuss starting an organization in the building industry back in 1941. Just 10 days later, they voted to proceed with the plans and nominated officers for the Birmingham Chapter of the Home Builders Institute of America. By 1942, the National Association of Home Builders (NAHB) was organized, and they had 250 builders in 13 chapters. Now, the NAHB has more than 140,000 members nationwide. largest in the country. In October or November of each year, a builder is chosen for the home, and vendors, contractors and suppliers come together to promote their top-quality products. The home provides a way to show potential homeowners the benefits of hiring a licensed contractor and an active member of the GBAHB. “Early in the summer, we send out a request for proposals to build the Ideal Home to our members,” Murphy says. “Our Parade of Homes committee looks over all of the choices and then our board votes on it. We look at everything from the location, neighborhood, floor plan and designer.” The group definitely didn’t disappoint with the 2015 Ideal Home. Located in the Preserve, the home was just as eye-catching as it was efficient. “It showcases the latest and greatest May 2016 | Hoover’s Magazine •

we have to offer,” Murphy says. “It’s a collaboration between the builder and the GBAHB, who actually owns the home.” Built by Fowler Custom Homes, last year’s Ideal Home is 4,200 square feet and has five bedrooms, four bathrooms, a main level, three-car garage and a media room, with architectural design by Chuck Frusterio and interior design by Bee Little of Set to Sell Staging. The bedroom on the second floor can also be used as an office, and the downstairs bathroom is divided into a powder room for guests on one side and a walkin shower on the other. Porcelain tile that looks like wood was used to cover the main floor. The home has an open, bright feel throughout with help from natural light and white cabinets in the kitchen and some restrooms. The kitchen has a farmhouse sink, white tile backsplash and a unique pattern above the stove. There’s also a large island where guests can sit and enjoy a meal. There are built-in shelves in the den that provide additional storage and a place to display photos and other trinkets. The home also features an outdoor living space — including a living room, fireplace and outdoor kitchen. But to Murphy, the most outstanding feature is that the home is energy efficient. “For the square feet, you would be surprised at the power bill at this home,” he says. It’s a smart home, meaning the owner can control different aspects of the home through his or her smart

oover continues to earn awards for its school system, quality of living, restaurants and overall welcoming atmosphere. It continues to grow each year and has become the sixth largest city in the state. With the city continuing in the right direction, now is the perfect time to buy or sell a home in Hoover. “There’s a very strong housing market right now in Hoover,” says Susette Clark-Walker, Hoover resident and realtor at RealtySouth.

“If houses are priced properly and in good shape, they will sell quickly. Some homes are getting multiple offers.” Buyers are looking for homes that are well maintained and move-in ready. Clark-Walker says the local housing market is pretty even, not really leaning toward buyers or sellers. All of the real estate websites support that, saying the market is neutral right now. f you’re looking for all-you-caneat pizza, check out Tortugas Homemade Pizza. No, it’s not a buffet — but you don’t need one when their pizzas can weigh as much as four or five pounds apiece. Tortugas serves true deep-dish Chicagostyle stuffed pizza, with homemade dough, homemade sauces and fresh ingredients, says Matt Vizcaino, whose parents started the business in 1999. “We chop all of our produce, shred and blend our cheese, make two delicious dressings,” he says. “In general, pepperoni is just pepperoni. But when it’s combined 50

with our homemade dough and sauces, it is exceptional. We have put together several combinations of ingredients that our customers truly love.” Vizcaino was 7 when his parents, Carlos and Carol, moved from Chicago to Hoover and opened the restaurant. He said he serves as a sort of general manager but has been part of every facet of the business — dishwashing, waiting tables, working in the kitchen and managing. Tortugas has served as his culinary education, he adds. “I don’t have any formal background besides messing around in my kitchen

at home,” he says. “My parents have a combined 65 years in the service and restaurant industry. Even I was kind of shocked to realize that number. They’ve been a part of fast food, hotels and they worked with pizza in Chicago.” Vizcaino says when his parents were deciding what to feature in the restaurant, they decided to stick with their tried-andtrue favorite from Chicago. “(Our pizza) is the style we learned to love in Chicago. Ours is baked in a twoinch deep pan and stuffed with whatever ingredients are chosen and lots of cheese,” he says. “It is topped with a second layer of

dough and smothered with our homemade sauce. It’s a true pie.” Vizcaino says their best selling pizzas are the classic pepperoni and cheese; the Traditional combo, which features sausage, green peppers, onions, mushrooms and garlic; and the Carne Special combination, which has sausage, bacon, Canadian bacon and pepperoni. In fact, Vizcaino says the Carne Special is his personal favorite. “I’m a big fan of the Carne Special with jalapeños and garlic added. After 16-anda-half years of experimenting with different combos, I always seem to come back to this

one,” he says. There are other fun combinations on the menu. The Pizza Mexicana combines homemade salsa, beef, black olives and a mix of mozzarella and cheddar cheese. Diners can also choose a true taste of Chicago with the Wrigleyville, which is packed with smoked sausage, Italian sausage, green bell peppers and onions — and is advertised as a “Cubs fan’s favorite.” Make no mistake, though: These pies pack a punch. “A 12-inch stuffed pie can weigh between four and five pounds, depending on the number of ingredients,” he says. “I’m always impressed to see someone able to eat even half in one sitting.” For customers interested in a lighter pie, Tortugas e have put together does offer thin crust pizza with the same topping and special combination options. several combinations Pizza’s not the only thing on the menu, though. of ingredients that our Tortugas also offers an “extremely popular” homemade lasagna as well as a customer favorite antipasto salad customers truly love.” with homemade vinaigrette, Vizcaino says. Vizcaino says all of the recipes are straight from the minds of his parents. Tortugas strives to offer a relaxed, casual atmosphere where customers can sit, enjoy their meals and spend time with their families, he says. “We love all of our customers and have so many that feel like part of the family,” he says. “We’ve had several say they feel like they’re in ‘Cheers,’ where everybody knows your name. During baseball season, expect the TVs to have Cubs games on.” Vizcaino says the restaurant’s success and his time there has inspired him to

dream big. “I have grown to love my job here and the people who have been a part of this restaurant. Hopefully, I can follow my parents’ footsteps and open my own restaurant in the not-too-distant future,” he says. Tortugas is located at 2801 John Hawkins Parkway in Hoover. Welcome Sylinda Daniel! The Hoover Area Chamber of Commerce is proud to announce the newest addition to the chamber staff. On March 1, 2016, Sylinda Daniel took on the role of Senior Account Executive. She brings with her over 16 years of experience in the social sciences and administration fields. She began focusing on her career goals early while pursuing her Bachelor of Science Degree in Criminal Justice at the University of Alabama at Birmingham. Sylinda has worked in a wide range of

positions that includes: police dispatcher, records manager, substance abuse prevention specialist/manager, trainer, independent State consultant, and most recently as staffing manager. During her career she has become proficient with client account maintenance, management styles, interviewing techniques, and policy/procedure writing. She is very excited to bring her knowledge and technology skills to this role. Her main responsibilities will be the recruitment and retention of the Hoover

orn in Frankfurt, Germany while her father was doing a tour with the Army, Sylinda Daniel came back stateside and eventually ended up in the Birmingham area. She’s done a little bit of everything during her professional career — including being a police dispatcher, substance abuse prevention specialist and academic coordinator — and is now the senior account executive for the Hoover Area Chamber of Commerce.

Q: How did you first get involved with the Hoover Chamber of Commerce? A: I first got involved with the Chamber in April 2015. A co-worker of mine at Snelling recommended me to Verona Petite to assist with the Chamber’s first job fair and expo. I have several years of experience presenting and teaching at statewide conferences, as well. Q: Why do you think it’s important to be involved with the community? A: Coming from a social services background, the community — meaning residents and businesses — is vital to any endeavor. You have to have your ear to the ground to what is important to the members if you want to make any difference. Q: What’s your favorite part about your job? A: Everything, from my co-workers and boss to chamber members and the community. I love networking with people, and as my mother knows, I have never met a stranger. 82

A: For eight years, I volunteered every weekend at a local horse barn before it changed owners. I took customers on rides and dealt with the biggest babies on the planet: horses! Q: What do you like to do in your spare time? A: I love to be outside. The owners of the barn I worked at, along with the other volunteers, are like extended family. Spending time with them while riding is how I relax. I also love to cook and try new food. You can probably find me enjoying an African or Vietnamese dish at any given moment. I recently found out I do not like sea urchin but love egusi soup. You eat it with your hands along with fufu.

Q: What are your favorite places to visit in Hoover? A: Hoover Tactical and Relish Café: They have good food, and you get to shoot guns. I, of course, like to shoot in 4-inch heels. Also, Bonefish Grill’s Bang Bang Shrimp and ahi tuna sashimi is the equivalent of heaven. Q: If you could visit any place in the world, where would you go? A: It is a toss-up between Venice and Paris. It would not only be for the obvious sightseeing, but to also be able to talk with culinary masters. Q: What is your favorite book and movie? A: Robert Jordan’s “Eye of The World” series. My cousin got me hooked on the novels as a kid. He was able to write in such a way that you could visualize his fantasy world. My favorite movie of all time is “Aliens.” That was the first movie I saw where it showcased a strong lead female. Sigourney Weaver was my hero growing up. n
